After spending a blissful few weeks with her husband, Michael, in Bern, Switzerland, Monika is assigned to return to Berlin, the most dangerous city in the world. Her mission for the OSS is to meet and collect information from the asset she cultivated, a man with access to a treasure trove of confidential Nazi documents. Sarah volunteers to go with her, and despite Monika’s protests, the two cousins travel to the heart of the Reich together.
After a journey filled with unexpected peril, they arrive in Hitler’s capital city. Soon, the asset provides information about a fledgling project to develop nuclear weapons. After a support mission helmed by Michael and Sarah’s new fiancé, Oliver fails, Sarah and Monika spring into action. With the help of an underground group, they embark on a quest that could change not only the course of the war but also the moral compass both of them have lived by their whole lives.
THE BERLIN GIRLS is the fourth novel in a new series by the #1 Amazon bestselling author of WHITE ROSE, BLACK FOREST, and THE MAUREEN RITTER SERIES. Download it and discover Eoin Dempsey’s books today.
Eoin Dempsey was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1977. He grew up in the beautiful Dublin suburb of Dalkey, where he and his friends would jump into the icy waters of the Irish Sea (during summertime) to prove their manliness. Eoin had a fantastic time attending Blackrock College, where he played rugby (poorly) and did his best to coast his way through. Eoin’s first ambition was to play rugby for Ireland. Due to a lack of talent, he soon abandoned that goal for the more reasoned path of the rock star. He played in bands through his teens and well into his twenties before harsh reality came calling, and his dreams of being the next Keith Moon faded.
Eoin made the ill-reasoned decision to study business in university and was accepted into University College Dublin to study Commerce in 1995. While Eoin did attend college, studying wasn’t his priority there.
He met his beautiful wife, Jill, while traveling to the USA in 1997, though it would be several years before he managed to break her down and they got together as a couple. It was during Eoin’s second stint in the USA, which he spent with his brother in New York City, that he decided to start writing a novel, for the express purpose of impressing women. This effort was met with mixed success. Eoin finished his first novel a year later. The over hundred and fifty rejections he received from publishers didn’t discourage him. He pinned them to his wall. After spending a year in Australia, where he was fired from many jobs, including picking red and green peppers and toiling for scallops miles out to sea on a fishing trawler, he returned home and decided to write again. Another novel followed while he phoned it in at a number of jobs in financial services in Dublin.
By this time Eoin had managed to convince Jill, the girl he’d met in the USA years before to move over to Dublin. She did so in 2004. It was the best negotiation he ever undertook. They were married in 2007. Jill’s more brilliant negotiating skills led Eoin to move to her hometown of Philadelphia in 2008, just in time for the economy to collapse. The plan to live with her parents for a few weeks turned into eighteen months, as Eoin struggled to retain employment in a fractured economy. It was during this time that he wrote FINDING REBECCA, which would go on to be his first published novel and be translated into fourteen different languages.
Eoin and Jill have three beautiful sons, Robbie, who was born in 2015, Sam, born in 2017, and Jack who came in 2019. Eoin enjoys playing with them and marveling at how much more talented they are at the sports that he loves, particularly golf.
In the prior books Michael and his new wife Monika are settled in New York, as USA is pulled into WW II. The main characters are from previous books by the author and Michael’s past included a move to Germany with his family to have a better life during the depression in the USA. When Hitler came to power Michael met Monika, a German girl, in Germany. Michael and Monika became married in their early 20’s when the war broke out.
Previously Michael joined The US Airforce and Monika took a position with the OSS in Bern, Switzerland to help her new homeland.
In this book Monika is embedded in Berlin in 1943, to get information back to the OSS in Bern, as to what the Nazi’s are planning. She travels with her cousin Sarah to Berlin, who has a friend in Berlin that is with the resistance, so they will have a safe place to stay.
Monika finds out vital information causing the OSS to have the USA plan to stop the Germans from completing a project that would allow Germany to win the war. The book becomes so rapidly paced from that point that it was impossible for me to stop reading until the end.
The author’s power to make the lives of these characters seem historically real is incredible.
Eoin has written a great epic series on the Ritter family prior to this book. This book is beyond any of my expectations!
Eoin is terrific at painting an historical picture of the WW II’s times in Germany with his words.
Monika Ritter and her cousin Sarah are going back into WW2 Germany to meet with a spy who could provide the OSS with intelligence crucial to the war effort. I have really enjoyed this historical fiction series that started in the 1930’s and has spanned the pre-war and war years. Monika’s husband Michael is now a military pilot flying dangerous missions in Europe and Monika keeps going back into Germany, unable to leave the country she loves in the hands of the Nazis. In this thrilling installment, she and Sarah face danger behind enemy lines, have to make terrible choices, and have the opportunity to make a difference in the course of the war. I love the way Dempsey’s books are always easy to read and enjoyable from start to finish.
I do wish that there had been a note at the end about the significant historical events where the author chose to deviate from actual historical fact… just because there were some big changes and I was surprised when events played out that way and especially when there was no note acknowledging it. 4/5 stars.
Another wonderful book by Eoin Dempsey. I received an ARC of this book and am so thankful. His writing makes you feel that you are a part of the story. His characters are so well developed that they become part; you the reader, your neighbors, your friends, and your family. I have read all the books in this series, his other series, and all of his stand alone books. All of his historical fiction books are well researched and are very readable. They have a bit of suspense, a bit of mystery, a bit of romance, a bit of intrigue, and for this series a lot of military and World War 2 history. This book in particular was impossible to put down! I can't wait for the next amazing book from Eoin in this series.....or any other book her writes!!!!!
Book 4 BERLIN GIRLS by Eoin Dempsey is spectacular and will keep you riveted until you finish it. These events are based on actual happenings during the period of Hitler’s rise to power. The two cousins arrive in Germany after being dropped by plane in a rural area. From there they find their way to Berlin where they stay with a former colleague of Monica’s cousin. Monica is an OSS asset and is tasked with taking out the scientists creating the nuclear bomb. You will want to go back and start with the first book in this series as well as the first book in the Lion’s Den series. Eoin Dempsey is an amazing author and brings the fear and pain suffered by so many during this period of time.
Book #4 of the Monika Ritter series initiates in Europe during 1943. This historical fiction reunites the reader with familiar faces from previous books, then takes focus sharply on two female cousins and their roles of defiance and abundant courage during WW2. Best-selling author Eoin Dempsey provides resilient action within his subplots. Breathtaking scenes of suspense pull the novel onwards as the protagonists attempt to weaken Nazi advancements. The author makes bold choices by crafting passages with moral conflicts regarding the terminating of life. Its relevancy to current-day struggles in our world and diverse moral viewpoints allows for readers’ personal deliberation. The novel would have benefited from added character development, as protagonists’ need more distinctive personalities and dialogue. It is evident that readers will anticipate Book #5 with ample enthusiasm! Make 2025 the year you read this series!
The characters come to life. The landscape and buildings fill up your imagination to see them as if you were walking through the story with the characters. I felt myself ducking and creeping slowly as the characters moved through the streets and alleys and fields and forests.
The plot was believable (although the outcome did differ from actual history.
I live to cheer for the underdogs especially when the villain is so powerful.
I lived the way the story kept racing forward even in the downtime of the characters. Looking forward to the next installment.
Wow! This series gets better and better. The Berlin Girls takes off like a rocket and the pulse-pounding ride never stops. This book takes place in 1943 so going undercover in Berlin is terrifying but that is exactly what Monika and her cousin Sarah do. Just reading about it made my palms sweat. Monika comes across the biggest secret of the war, which would ensure victory for Hitler. To say this book ends with a cliffhanger is an understatement but since the war is far from over, I expected it. Thankfully, the next book will be released in February. I can't wait.
Started this book on New Year’s Eve and almost finished it in a day - what can I say about this series except I love it and read each subsequent novel as soon as it comes out! A riveting WWII book that keeps you on your toes from start to end. Monica and her cousin are tasked with returning to Berlin to get crucial information from their German Informant. When they discover that Nazi scientists are closing in on building a nuclear bomb, they risk everything to thwart that effort. With roadblocks at every turn, the excitement builds until the conclusion. Can’t wait for book 5!
This was a pretty good read, but I felt it was let down by some errors in continuity from the previous book in the series. There were also mistakes in the backgrounds of the 2 main characters (their home towns were swapped a few times) and there was even a name mistake where Monika was called Maureen. Some of the justifications given for their anti-Nazi stance were in danger of descending into cliche. I have started the next book in the series as I am invested in the overall story though, so don't let my negative comments put you off.
This is another GREAT addition to the Monika Ritter series. Lots of action yet the reader is left hanging at the close of the book. Are 2 of the characters still alive or are they dead. You will have to wait until the next book to find out. Dempsey likes to keep you guess as to what is coming next. Once you start a book it's hard to put it down. A new twist at every turn. Another Dempsey must read!!
I have been thoroughly enjoying all the Ritter books, from Lion's Den through the American Girl, Maureen to Monika. But the Berlin Girls disappointed me, because Dempsey has written a thoroughly fantasy plot, taking out 5 well-known physicists, who it is easy ylto confirm all survived the war. It makes me wonder about what else in the series involving real historical people is also fantasy.
Golly what a cliff hanger!!! I couldn’t wait to read this 4th book in the series. Now I’m anxiously awaiting the 5th. Novels around wartime do not usually “grab” me but Monika’s story was one that definitely has 😊
Excellent Story...gripping! War brings out the best in people or the worst. In this case the characters were all very clear about their priorities which made it a compelling story.
Have probably read all of Eoin books and they never disappoint. This book/series is excellent. Women who did this type of service for the allies were so brave and help shorten the war. Can't wait to read the next book.
Great WWII story with two strong women characters. The story and plot was well developed and executed. I love Eoin Dempsey’s books. Can’t wait to get into the next when it’s released.
I love Eion Dempsey’s books! Once I start one, it is hard not to finish the book in a sitting!! I have to finish the Monika series & will definitely start another series!
This is the 4th book in Monika and Michael’s series. Monica and her cousin, Sarah, have left Germany. Sarah trains with the OSS and becomes engaged to Oliver. Much to Monika’s dismay, Sarah is returning with her to Germany to work with the German who has information that can change the course of the war. Monika and Sarah relay this info to the OSS and a mission is planned. Unfortunately, Michael and his crew do not make it to the mission and Michael becomes a POW and Oliver has parachuted far off the drop point. Monika and Sarah, with the help of some other resistance members carry out the mission. I anxiously await the next book in the series as there are a lot of unanswered questions in this one. That is why 4 stars instead of 5. Thank you to the author for the ARC; all opinions are my own.
