They were in the midst of youth, even on the battlefield… Shin, Lena, and their friends experience brief moments of peace and happiness while facing certain death, enjoying a short break, plunging into battle once again, and setting foot for the first time in the frigid United Kingdom—sharing them with their comrades, friends, lovers, and family. Glimpse another side of 86—EIGHTY-SIX that will leave you wishing against all odds that more such moments will visit them again tomorrow. This volume contains various short stories previously uncollected or unpublished, now compiled into a single volume!
安里アサト, Asato Asato, born 1985) is a female Japanese novelist. The pen name Asato Asato is a combination of her real name (Toru Asakura) and eighty-eight. Asato started writing novels just before she entered junior high school.
She initially submitted her work to the Kadokawa Beans Bunko Rookie Award, but when in 2014 her manuscript made it to the third round of the 2014 21st Dengeki Novel Prize, Asato started thinking about writing a novel that was "Dengeki Novel-esque." This novel would become the start of the 86 -Eighty Six- series.
In 2016, 86 -Eighty Six- won the 23rd Dengeki Novel Prize.
This had me crylaugh uncontrollably in public. it is light but all those little things that remind you of what has actually happened in the story and the long way we had till this moment made me so emotional. also the non-sense perfume fight at the end was so funny I couldn't even comprehend what's going on but I really love asato asato's passion for the world, characters and all the little details they really want to share about their work. Thank you. I can't wait for the main volume 13.
I originally thought, just based on the title, that this would be a story that somehow altered the events in the original, which is why I put off reading it for some time. Thankfully, it's rather just a collection of short stories sprinkled in amongst the various novels, adding extra scenes or a different perspective to some events (excluding the very last story, which was... certainly something to say the least).
While I do enjoy revisiting these characters and this world in between volumes, I wouldn't necessarily pin this as a must-read or anything. The stories range from cute to humorous to introspective, but I wouldn't say they add anything you don't already get from the main series. Pick it up only if you're a super fan of the series and these characters.
3.5 STARS. I just love these characters <3 It was so cute getting to see all of these side stories. There were a few really funny ones and a few that I recognized in the anime—which was cool.
I especially loved any scenes with Shin and Lena. I will take ANYTHING I can get. They’re just so DARN cute!!
It was a nice break from the intensity that these series brings and I liked it! Typically short stores aren’t my thing but I care so much about these characters I will read anything Asato Asato writes. *hugs book tightly*
It's a collection of short stories, some light and funny, some rather heavy, one downright an AU in which everybody lives and has fun together, that's highly enjoyable to me as a fan of 86. The stories enrich the details of the world and characters of 86 as known from the main timeline, and not one caused me to shed a tear or two.
A mix of lighthearted short stories, they aren’t necessary for the overall story. However, some did give me some chuckles and it was a quick read overall.
