All is merry and bright at the first Hoople’s Haven campground Christmas light contest, that is until one contestant is frozen out of the contest….literally. Mavis Hoople and her Hoople’s Haven Campground friends decide to host a Christmas light contest to raise money to rebuild Community Church. However, Mavis soon finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation when one of her staff members becomes the prime murder suspect. Join Mavis and her collie Lance during the holidays in a winter wonderland of snowmen, sleighs, and Santas as they rally friends and family together in the small Spring Valley community where friendships are warm, but tinsel can sometimes be terrorizing. A charming Christmas cozy for the most festive time of year. You won't regret giving this heart-warming, clean reading, mystery to all your friends and family as gifts--and order one for yourself, as well.
I picked this up on a lark from a used book store, because... well, Tinsel and Terror. It turned out to be a modest, sweet, amateur effort from a local-ish author who I'm sure had a ball writing it.
It's a simple story that could do with a lot of pruning - the first 70 or so pages in particular have a lot of fluff that don't contribute much to the plot and could probably nearly be excised entirely. A tighter 150 page book would've worked just as well. Our title character could also have had a bit more agency driving the story forward.
But I don't want to harp on what I think are problems. It was a light read that I don't regret picking up. If you're in the market for a simple, low-stakes, low-challenge story with a cast of sweet, if thin, characters, it's worth grabbing off the shelf.
