personally this was not for me..
the art work was amazing.
but where was the plot 😭😭??
it didn’t have one. i was honestly really excited for this book when i picked it up today, but i was overall let down.
there was no actual connection 😿, them finding each other again was so weird because what even happened? i was left with so many questions even after i finished the whole book :((
it was a relatively short read so it didn’t waste that much of my time but overall i’m just a little disappointed 😞😞 and i personally don’t understand how you can make this into a series, imo all that was needed to be said/done already happened 😭

Uh huh. Yep. Hmm. Okay. This is definitely yuri. And it’s good enough, but keep in mind that my threshold for good yuri is pretty low, provided you’re not on about twincest or chewing hair.
There are definitely things to like in this story. When the central romance between the rebellious (via her hair; she’s a model student otherwise) Nagisa and the frail Mashiro is developing, it’s got its moments.
Nagisa has a lot of jumbled thoughts about her feelings, since Mashiro was accidentally a source of major trauma for her. This goopy mess of feels bubbles up in some weird ways, but I don’t think they’re all intentional.
No, the storytelling here is a bit off and that’s partially down to Mashiro as a character and the general pacing, which feels fairly awkward. It gets the job done, but doesn’t necessarily get it done well.
I will say, I loved that digression by the mangaka about uniform design because it lets me get how passionate they are about this, which does make the rough spots easier to overlook, since they are trying hard. I did find it amusing that none of the characters we spend time with manages to wear their uniform in the exact same way, mind.
Okay, look, the problem here is freaking manga disease pathology. What does frail mean, precisely? Is Mashiro dying? Does she have anemia? Malaria? Is she prey to a psychic vampire on the regular? The vapours? Wealthy dowager syndrome?
It’s annoying. These sick girl stories (and this particular trope) are a genre unto themselves, but they tend to drive me bonkers. Especially when Nagisa’s solution to all this is an exercise regimen. Yeah, just jog off your low red blood cell count, that’s how it works.
Nagisa’s whole deal is strange beyond that. Sometimes I think this story is a bit of an excuse to just cram in everything the mangaka thought would be fun. Her trauma over her initial encounter with Mashiro is one thing, but why can’t she lock eyes precisely?
I mean, some of it is down to her confused feelings, but the whole eye mask thing and the sunglasses seem like big reaches. Her whole plan is either to like Mashiro or set her up with friends or something and, again, it doesn’t seem to make sense if you look at it on any level.
Which leaves the feelings thing and the power of hugs. And that part is pretty cute. As somebody whose marriage resulted from a hug that lasted longer than expected, I can buy the way this shakes out. Sometimes the good bits manage to break through.
Still, neither of our leads is especially interesting. Nagisa gets the win because she’s desperately trying to deal with the cards she’s been dealt in what she thinks is a pretty crappy hand. She’s changed herself in a minor bit of rebellion, but she has plans.
Mashiro just wants to be normal, which, again, would be more resonant if we had any idea what’s wrong with her. She’s an ‘I wish’ song away from being an old school Disney heroine and roughly as interesting (sorry Cinderella).
This manga has the misfortune of going up against two other similar books that do this way better. The Summer You Were There played the sick card way harder and it went to some real dark places and pulled it off.
The Moon On A Rainy Night actually did some research and had a realistic deaf character who struggles for legitimate reasons. Mashiro is closer to being a Manga Pixie Dream Girl and less interesting as a result.
Still, it’s not so bad I won’t read more. It takes a lot for me and yuri though, so be aware if you’re considering it yourself. The other two aforementioned titles handle thus far more adroitly.

2.5 - It just didn't land. Not only did I not especially like the characters--I prefer to read about characters who have a sense of what they want and are willing to put something on the line for it--but I thought it was cheap and lazy not to explore *why* Mashiro keeps fainting. If she has a known chronic illness, then Nagisa's advice to "just practice jogging" is probably useless and maybe dangerous.

I quite enjoyed this, but I feel like it hasn't hit its stride yet. I can't say I'm a huge fan of 'plot device illness', so that's a bit irritating, especially as it seems like Nagisa is saying she just needs to try harder and get fitter? I'll get the next volume and see how it goes, though.

Review for the entire series.
This manga pissed me tf off. The premise is decent enough: girl loses her chance to go to her top high school because of a sickly girl on the street, now she's reinvented her identity (looks more like a delinquent), but said sickly girl joins her class. This makes for a multifaceted, complex relationship with genuine drama, except the story doesn't fulfill any of that, and if it does, it's resolved swiftly yet poorly.
I'll start with the good. The characters don't beat around the bush. I like the character designs. The beginning piqued my interest. It was decent until the main characters started dating.
I had my issues with the beginning, but the latter half really pissed me off. Once they start dating, literally nothing happens in the story. It's just fluff about them being so madly in love (they don't fight at all, except for the contrived cram school drama that got shoehorned in but was resolved very quickly and easily), where's the slowburn and/or complexity of the characters I was promised?? Also, the girl being sick is only utilized by the author when she needs to go to the nurse or needs to be carried/coddled by her gf, it's clear the author didn't research the day-to-day of someone with a chronic disease at all. She barely has issues at the end of the story, I would've at least liked to see a hospital visit.
And since the author knew nobody gaf about the fluff, he decided to make the last quarter or so of the series focus on the side couple (their short friend and the second year student council member). That romance felt so fake and forced, their interest in eachother went from 0-100 with little development. The short friend just felt like the student council girl's rebound. Anyways, I found them both to be bland and boring with no substance, so the focus on their romance pissed me off.
The story is so bland and devoid of substance/conflict that the best developed romance by far was the student council president and the school nurse, because at least their feelings grew over time. When the teacher x student side plot is better than the main plot, that's when you know the manga is bad.
Every character had no depth or substance, and that issue only exacerbated over time. Also, the last chapter was such a nothingburger, why was most of it a recap??.
There were some cute moments tho, so 2 stars.

J’étais très intriguée par ce yuri. Le résumé m’a donné très envie de découvrir cette histoire. Je n’ai clairement pas été déçue. J’ai beaucoup aimé cette lecture et j’ai été vraiment très touché sans pour autant savoir vraiment pour quelles raisons. En tout cas, j’ai adoré ce premier tome et je suis très curieuse de voir ce que la suite va nous offrir.
Dans ce premier tome, Nagisa Ootsuki s’est débarrassée de sa honte d’avoir raté ses examens d’entrée au lycée et compte donc profiter à fond du lycée dans lequel elle a été acceptée même si ce n’était pas son premier choix. Mais lors de le rentrée des classes elle rencontre la jeune fille qui lui a fait échouer ses examens !
Comme je viens de le dire, j’ai adoré ce premier tome. Je trouve que l’histoire est assez légère, en nous offrant beaucoup d’émotions. C’est tout mignon, tout adorable. Nagisa m’a beaucoup plu, elle est adorable je trouve. Elle essaye tant bien que mal de ne pas s’inquiéter pour Mashiro sauf que c’est peine perdue pour le coup. C’est plus fort qu’elle. Mashiro m’a beaucoup touché. Elle a une santé fragile et se retrouve bien trop souvent à l’infirmerie. Elle est très touchante à sa manière et je me pose beaucoup de questions à son sujet. J’adore la dynamique qui s’installe entre ces deux là et on voit Nagisa changer au fur et à mesure. C’était tellement adorable à la fin. J’ai hâte de voir la suite!

I picked this up because I saw so many comparisons to the summer you were there and that is my favorite Yuri series. With Anemone I can see why people are comparing them but Nagisa and Mashiro are very different characters from Shizuku and Kaori and that’s a good thing. I actually really liked this first volume. My only gripe was really Nagisas reasoning for not liking Mashiro since she didn’t ask Nagisa to make the choice she did nor did she choose to be sick but that’s resolved In this issue and it’s only a small gripe. This is one of the better high school yuris I’ve read so I’d recommend it. I am also hoping that we find out more about what exactly is wrong with Mashiro in the coming volumes.

I liked this manga, it isn’t one that I would say is plot heavy but it’s more of one that feels like it’s going to focus on its characters. I was a bit confused at first because I felt like I was missing context but once chapter two starts it filled in what I was missing. I feel like I still have a few minor questions but I’m curious to see how the bond between Nagisa and Mashiro grows, I liked the direction the story was going with them. It definitely has some tense and sad moments, I don’t really know what kind of direction this story is going to head into but I’m very pleased with it so far. I loved the art style too, the character designs and backgrounds look nice. Thank you to Edelweiss and the publisher for my complimentary review copy.

There's only one thing that really sours this otherwise interesting and sweet exploration of love: the ableism. Mashiro's unnamed condition is treated by the girls like something she can just "try harder" to "get over," and that leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Mind you, it may all be on purpose and in service of later plot, which would make sense given the way Nagisa and Mashiro ended up at their less-than-impressive high school in the first place. But it's also something that could drive readers away, so be aware.

Both the reason why Nagisa has negative feelings towards Mashiro and Mashiro's unspecified illness seem like forced ways to give Nagisa complicated feelings so that Mashiro wouldn't have any major character flaws, but I'm willing to continue the series to see how their relationship and Mashiro's character develops more

Manga drawing people just cannot brainstorm a proper start of relationships in these types of stories. I've read a lot of manga, where they kicked off the pairing dynamic with such a poor sentence or scenes, I can't even...

That was a surprisingly quick read...
Honestly, not as bad as the Goodreads ratings would suggest. I'll even go as far as to say it was good.
Just some good old slice-of-life yuri about understanding feelings, and it's incredibly cute, as well. Official English release when?

J’hésite entre 3-4 étoiles mais au final, c’est un bon titre!
Nous avons deux personnages qui sont au antipodes l’une de l’autre; Nagisa, une jeune fille brillante, aux allures de rebelle, qui ne pense qu’à étudier et Mashiro, une jeune fille au long cheveux foncé, souriante, voir un peu nunuche mais à la santé très fragile. C’est cette même Mashiro qui a occasionné l’entrée dans un lycée que Nagisa n’avait pas vraiment choisie… alors qu’elle découvre qu’elles sont dans la même classe! Déterminé, Nagisa décide de tout faire pour « aimer » Mashiro, même si elle l’a traumatisée en la faisant échouer son examen d’entrée de son lycée de rêve.
C’est un bon titre pour débuter dans l’univers du Yuri.
L’histoire est bien écrite avec humour et tendresse.
Le personnage de Nagisa est intéressant puisqu’il évolue tout au long de notre lecture. Elle demeure fixer sur son objectif jusqu’à temps qu’elle réalise ses émotions s’y mêle et la remet en question.
Mashiro, malgré son côté naïve et santé fragile, semble beaucoup plus assumée et prête à aller de l’avant dans cette relation amitié avec des plus.
J’ai trouvé ça rafraîchissant d’avoir un Yuri qui ressemble davantage à une romance écolière typique de shojo, sans le stéréotype des Yuris. À prendre note, qu’il n’y a que du bubbly mignon dans ce tome et aucune scène de spicy.
Les dessins sont vraiment beaux et donne vraiment envie de découvrir l’histoire!

I didn't love this one. It's not bad per se, and the art was gorgeous. I just wasn't connecting with the characters at all. I might pick up another volume to try, but this first one isn't giving me a big reason to.

C'était un peu répétitif au début selon moi mais après ça s'est fluidifié. Elles sont adorables, et les dessins d'elles sont vraiment magnifiques.
