Modern life means modern solutions, even to supernatural problems. So of course the government would have a classification system, special schools, and licenses for people with mysterious powers—any manifestation of a miracle is enough to be called a “Himiko,” but only those with full certification may use the title of “god.” And high schooler Nagi is in serious need of a god! The death of her grandmother has left her family shrine devoid of the necessary divinity, and her hopelessly shut-in Himiko brother isn’t looking promising. But if Nagi isn’t careful, her search for a god might end with her finding more than she bargained for…

I 1,000% LOVED this book.

The characters were so vivid and fully fleshed out. They felt real to me. I LOVED Nagi. Her refusal to give in, despite the odds being so stacked against her, yet her human vulnerableness as she kept bouncing against the negativity from others, judging her without really knowing her. Her little found family by the end of this volume us just too precious and I while I know things will work out, all of me is hoping that it will.

The setting was described well. The teachers WERE present for the school parts, which I appreciated. I'm so tired of school setting where the teachers are nowhere to be found. I get that the student characters need to have the freedom to move through the plot, but it needs to be realistic. This was, at least it was realistic enough for me.

The artwork was pretty, so it served the story instead of booting me out of it.

The mystery is whetting my appetite. I want to know what makes Nagi so special. I also want to see if the VERY barely hinted at connection develops into a romance or not. The reader gets just enough to want to read more, but not so little that it is frustrating. A very delicate balance.

I definitely recommend this one to those who like the high school setting with magic and little to no romance, with a "special" character who isn't OP and who very few realize is "special", including the character herself!

5, I so hope the second volume continues in the same vein as this one, stars!

My thanks to NetGalley and Yen Press for an eARC of this book to read and review.

Oh my goodness, I LOVED THIS!

However, you need to know right now that this is NOT a romantic story the way the English publisher has been promoting it because if you're coming for that reason alone, you will be highly disappointed. Thankfully, I have a few friends who read the French edition and they were able to warn me in advance to NOT go in with that expectation, and I want to share that with others.

This first volume was so wonderful purely because of how friendship-focused it was! I would also say Nagi as a heroine is equally wonderful and felt this volume was deeply compelling because of her heart for her family and community. She is earnest but can be blunt too. She's also hard-working, and that especially shines when you see how bad she is in god school. (Truly, I feel bad for her but she isn't giving up! You got this, Nagi!) I felt she was so down-to-earth and found that even though there was humor sprinkled throughout, it felt very relaxing to read at the same time. Again, she's earnest in everything she does even if she isn't sure what her divine powers are just yet. She is easily a heroine who you can cheer for, especially when you see how she treats those around her.

This leads me to say that while I was a little bummed there wasn't more focus on her making new friends when she first goes to god school, when she befriended the "outcast," I was completely sold with this story! Granted that happens a little later, but it was my favorite part! It's when you start really seeing Nagi's earnestness to not let one of her other friends(?), Monaka, down as she is helping Nagi study. I would also add that you also see how caring Nagi is and how it pushes her to help those around her, regardless if she can use divine powers or not. Even when she is feeling discouraged during a school event and everyone is worn out because they used their powers, Nagi does her best to keep her chin up and help those in the best way she can.

Truly, this first volume really exceeded my expectations as I worried this would be an overhyped series I wouldn't connect with, but I couldn't have been more wrong! If you're looking for a down-to-earth heroine and a strong theme on friendships, this is one I would highly recommend! I anticipate future volumes will continue to be focused on friendships, but I also anticipate that we will see more of the everyday shenanigans of being at a prestigious school where everyone has divine powers!

I'm really looking forward to reading more!

In a modern world, albeit one where people are born with mystical powers, Nagi is not one of the special ones. That doesn’t stop her from ending up at god school, mind you, and also from likely being the most special one of them all.

Even writing that last paragraph threatened to put my brain into a coma. Nothing especially new, is what I am trying to say with as little subtlety as I can courageously muster. Yet I clearly liked this, so why becomes the question.

And the first answer is its pedigree. I was absolutely not particularly interested in reading this until I saw ‘original story by Natsu Hyuuga’. They are the esteemed author of The Apothecary Diaries, which maintains a chokehold on second spot in my current ranking of favourite manga (behind Frieren, in case you wondered).

That was a good start and better than this story gets, honestly. Nagi is a kind character with inferiority issues, but we’re introduced to her along with her brother, who’s a shut-in with minor powers who communicates with Nagi via a doll. Unless something gets done with this character later, he apparently exists to justify a mascot character and little else.

Once Nagi gets to school, however, things really get jumping. A core group of friends (and less so) are introduced and they really work well bouncing off one another, minus that one guy who just sort of ends up tagging along.

It’s great the way it balances Nagi’s inferiority with her drive to push herself way too hard to compensate. That her nature is both a strength and a weakness is a clever idea. She’s really strong, but an unkind word can take her down pretty fast.

As far as the supporting cast goes, special mention must be made of the aloof Miruru, whose power of telepathy has made her an outcast because… she has the power of telepathy. She’s also suffering from her parents’ beliefs that have kept her from learning about her true nature.

Nagi making friends with her and Miruru’s sudden transformation into an incredibly huggable smol floof that basically acts as Nagi’s pet is adorable. There are lots of ways to handle shy and distant characters, but this is one of the best.

There are a lot of Iruma-kun vibes to this story - fish out of water at a school discovers friends along the way and her own brand of special. Like that one, the aforementioned core group is strong and a lot of fun.

Even the big class trip arc we close with is very clever, with some fun use of powers. It is basically a shonen style story, but having a female lead and some interesting characters makes it a lot more enjoyable so far. It’s got a balance that, annoying brothers aside, it strikes quite well.

4 stars - I definitely have room in my heart (and reading pile) for more series like this and was impressed by how good it got once it got to the real meat of the story. An uneven start that finds its footing impressively fast.

This manga has literally everything it needs. Good characters. Mystery. A school. A trial. Suspense. Mystery. Humour. Fun. Just put a kind heroine in a school full of kids with magical powers and a strange magician that keeps appearing when she needs him and you have a wonderful story! + I really liked the drawings they’re really beautiful, I can’t wait for the next one! If you liked Mha, The Witch’s Hat Atelier or Les carnets de l’apothicaire, you should definitely pick this one too <3

This was really fun! I like the friend group that is developing, they're all really funny. The premise is interesting. I was really curious about this one because the original story is written by the same author as The Apothecary Diaries, but they're actually pretty different!

Omg! I did it! I manifested the e-arc from Yen Press! Thanks so much! 😊I knew those intention candles would work lol Tobthose looking for a successor to Apothecary Diaries this isn’t it. Male lead is largely absent from the first volume and shares little to no interaction with our heroine (failure?),Nagi. However, knowing the authors less than positive feelings on Jinshi this isn’t surprising. Failure at God School is its own thing and stands on its own legs. With time and more volumes these quirky characters will endear themselves to readers. The end notes were filled with the standard manga translation notes but, the history of the evolution of Shinto religion was a stand out. It was very informative and a treat for this folklore fan to read

Okay, this is SUPER fun to read. It's kind of giving MHA, but you know shoujo-ified. More character focused, a potential for romance, and already having mysteries and potential foreshadowing. I honestly liked this so much I want to see if the light novel is being translated into English too.

edit: omg the original story is written by the author who writes Apothecary Diaries -- no wonder I like this so much!!

I liked this one a lot. Not too much has happened, but that's because this is book one and a bunch of characters and lore was being dropped on us. I can't wait to see all the characters fleshed out more, and see where the story is going to go from here. I always enjoy a good found family connection, so I'm glad to see that we're getting that as well.

Thank you to Yen Press for the ARC.

In Japan, ordinary people have the power to become Gods by possessing "super human powers." Nagi's grandmother and brother, Takeru, are two such people. However, after an accident takes their grandmother's life, Takeru becomes a NEET, leaving their towns shrine without a god. That is until one day Nagi rescues a young boy, and a god sends her to Kannagara Academy to become a god! There's just one problem, nobody can figure out what exactly Nagi's power is, not even Nagi herself!

Cute little supernatural slice of life school manga. Nagi is the perpetually positive type of character who seems to make friends with everyone, and her cheerfulness is definitely catching as I really enjoyed this read.

What makes this stand out, though, is the old gods vs. new gods' idea. The powers that the "gods" have in this are pretty standard super hero powers to be honest, they just don't really feel god like and it's pretty clear Akagawara did this on purpose as one of the students parents are noted as worshipping the "old gods". I like the academy/slice of life thing, but I'm really interested in how this side of things is going to play out.

It's definitely a cute little read with some fun characters and gorgeous art!

This story pulled me in right away with its vivid art style and clever worldbuilding. I loved the concept of Gods as everyday figures living among people, earning their status rather than being born into it. Nagi’s sudden leap into a mysterious school for future deities felt fresh and intriguing, especially as she navigates her new role with no clear understanding of her own powers. The friendships she builds are charming, and each character brings their own emotional weight to the story. It moves at a great pace, balancing humor, heart, and magic without ever feeling too heavy. I expected more romance, but was pleasantly surprised by how it stayed focused on growth and connection instead. A delightfully original read that I’d happily recommend to anyone looking for something a little different.

So eager for the second volume!! We're set in a school where people have godly powers and we're trying to figure out if Nagi has any powers and what they might be!! I imagine that this is going to take up several different volumes, and I can see a relationship forming between her and the god that's on the cover of this volume.

Happy Reading!

SUCH an interesting concept and I'm excited to continue reading this series! This would be perfect for my My Hero Academia readers as it has a similar concept except instead of heroes there are kami (gods). Super cool!

Thanks to NetGalley and the Editor. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

When I read that this story was from the same author of The Apothecary Diaries, I couldn’t press “request” fast enough! And when my request was approved, I was beyond excited. So I had to just put aside everything else I was reading and dive into this one right away!

The artists aren’t the same as the other series, but I loved this art, too. It is so cute and so nice to look at! And the story seems pretty interesting too. The only negative thing I can say about this one is that it is just the first volume. I need more!! And I need it now! I don’t usually binge-read, but there is a big exception to this “rule”, and it’s manga. I don’t always binge-read whole series (especially because usually they take a lot of time before being complete), but I usually binge-read some volumes (and in the case of The Apothecary Diaries, I binge-read all the volumes available in a couple of days!!). So, the waiting for the sequels is killing me.
But that said, I can’t find a single bad thing to say about this manga.

It’s the first volume, so it is sort of an introduction to the world and the characters. Nagi is a good MC, and I think she will surprise us. And I am a sucker for school setting so I am quite happy with that too. I am looking forward to getting to know her classmates better! (And there is a “god” who is around and who has made me pretty curious too, and yes, it may be because he is just so cool, but… who cares?! I am curious, and I want to see more of him around, too!).

So, this is fun, it is intriguing and I want more!!

When I saw this new shojo manga series by Natsu Hyuuga, author of the Apothecary Diaries, was getting an English translation I squeed!

In this world gods are basically people with superpowers, and there are enough of them that there are special schools to help harness your powers. Nagi ends up at such a school, only no one (including her!) knows what her power is or why she has been sent there!

Volume one gives us a great intro to all of Nagi’s schoolmates, her family, and a mysterious god who manages to show up exactly when Nagi needs him (future love interest maybe?!)

This was an entertaining read and I can not wait to continue the series!

Thank you to Yen Press for an eARC via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
