Matthew Calamos, a young man raised apart from it, enters Alkalian society through his first year attending the confederacy's national college. Like all other Alkalians, he has a battle morph, a transformation into a powerful humanoid or creature with special weapons or abilities. He soon learns, however, that his battle morph is unlike others, rare and with a power tabooed and feared by them, and it makes him stand out in a student community dominated by boss students, the most popular, charming, and dangerous students among them. As he makes friends and foes in the community, Matt also learns more about it and himself, maturing socially and sexually. But he soon finds himself a champion in a struggle for control over the community, and throughout the conflict battles are fought, relationships grow or wither, and lives are threatened. Allegiances change, secrets fester, and morals are tested before Matt and others are all affected by the conflict's end, their fates tied to events unforeseen.
This was a very well written novel, which showed off the author's world building abilities. The characters were a joy to discover, and the tale itself was fresh and new, with a pace of action that was sure to keep the reader glued to the pages.
What a disgusting and despicable ending to a decent book. I'm unsure what the author was thinking at the time but they must've decided they didn't want to create any follow up books. So they ended the book with a completely unexpected ending where the main character randomly goes into a kill all mode.
