Gail Meath is the author of the multi-award-winning Jax Diamond Mysteries, a fun 1920s series about wise-cracking PI Jax Diamond, his courageous German Shepherd partner, Ace, and Broadway star Laura Graystone, as they, along with a crazy group of friends, solve some of the toughest crimes in New York City. She is alternating that series with her new 1930s Golden Age of Hollywood mysteries series, Stone & Steele, starring Vivian Steele, a widow seeking justice, and Preston Stone, a playboy vigilante. As always, she blends the most lovable characters with a good, solid mystery.

“Blackjack” is the 5th book of the “Jax Diamond Mysteries” by Gail Meath. It’s 1923 during the prohibition, in New York City where Laura Graystone will be starring in the Broadway musical production of “Songbird” in just a few days.
There seems to be a lot on Jax’s mind as he is acting totally irresponsible, which is strange behavior for Jax. He’s letting himself become overwhelmed with the need to learn his real name, of wanting to learn who his parents are, he’s neglecting his cases and feeling inadequate when it comes to his finances. And it’s the finances that has him ignoring all the warning bells and whistles when Cabaret owner, Nick Gallo, offers him a job paying $1000 per night!
Why all the self-doubt you might ask? Short answer: Jax wants to propose to Laura Graystone!
Jax is on a floating casino and sitting at the blackjack table where he keeps raising his bets and winning. Jax knows how to count cards, and he’s feeling confident that he has also outsmarted the bad guy, Cabaret casino owner, Nick Gallo.
“Looks like you’re on a winning streak, Jax.” “Time will tell. Thanks.” Jax sipped his drink and upped his stakes to a thousand dollars a hand. He won the next two games and had over four thousand dollars' worth of chips in front of him… he decided to bet the whole kit and caboodle on the next hand… “Let’s see how lucky I am.” He pushed all his chips forward.
So, did he win? Let’s just say that Jax is fortunate to have so many caring friends who get help from some of Jax’s pals in figuring out the cases that Jax has been letting slide. Laura, Jeannie and Carla are convinced they all are connected somehow, and that Nick Gallo has set Jax up for a hard fall.
Gail Meath has once again created an excellent historical cozy mystery featuring our beloved Detective Jax Diamond and his German Shepherd sidekick, Ace. Be sure to grab your copy of “Blackjack” now and be on the lookout for “Killjoy”, book 6 in the Jax Diamond Mysteries that will be out on Oct.31, 2023.
Never a dull moment for this PI and his canine partner. Set among the glamour of the 1920 era. Complex cases with lots of surprises, twists and turns with new players entering the picture. Highly entertaining. Bravo Gail for another great ride inside the richness of your talent.
Reviewed by Pikasho Deka for Readers’ Favorite Gail Meath continues to woo whodunnit lovers with yet another gripping tale of crime, murder, and mayhem. Blackjack is a fast-paced crime drama sleuth story that hooks its claws into you from the first page and keeps your eyes glued to the pages until the last. The plot throws enough curveballs along the way to keep you engaged and looking forward in eager anticipation of what's coming next. Laura plays an even more significant role in this book, and her relationship with Jax continues to evolve. I liked that she and her friends ran their own investigation, and she was the one who brought Jax closer to the truth. All in all, a gem of a book for sleuth story aficionados.
A new Jax Diamond mystery automatically goes to the top of my TBR list, I love these books. "Blackjack" is no exception. It is a well written, page-turning mystery with a lot of suspense, wonderful characters and beautiful illustrations. I loved to learn more about Jax's past.
A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author. All of the above opinions are my own.
All these novels are SUPERB! Love the HEA endings and this one helps Max find his parents so he comes by hi sleuthing qualities naturally. Every book is a 'must era's and you cannot put them down!! Absolutely cannot wait for the next instalment -keep on writing then quickly!!
This is book 5 in the Jax Diamond Mysteries and I have to admit that I haven't read all of the 4 that come before. However, this absolutely still works well as a standalone read.
I love the feel that we get straight away from this book - set in the 1920's in New York - the era of the flappers and the gangs, and I totally got this atmosphere.
Jax is a PI and has had a bad run his last few cases go wrong. He takes a step back when a strange new job offer comes along - but is everything as good as it looks? Having own known each other for a few months, Jax knows he loves Laura, but he worries that he's not enough for the star that she's becoming?
There are quite a few characters which add to the storylines which I enjoyed and of course Laura and Jax were great - but again, my favourite character is Ace, Jax's German shepherd partner. They were all well developed and although I didn't miss anything plot-wise, I feel that the relationships will become stronger if read within the series.
I loved that each of the storylines flowed nicely towards each other and came beautifully and cleverly together to conclude. The plot was intriguing and I really liked how there were clues dotted into the story along the way, some a little more obvious than others.
I really enjoyed this one and can't wait to catch up on the couple in-between that I've not yet read.
BlackJack by Gail Meath. JAX DIAMOND MYSTERIES Book 5. New York City 1923 Back in the city after a nightmare vacation, PI Jax Diamond and his courageous canine partner, Ace, just can’t catch a break when three quick and easy cases explode into a massive mess of unrelated major crimes with victims, dead and alive, piling up. I really enjoyed this book. I liked Jax and Laura. Even Ace. Lots of action. I thought I had it sussed but I wasn't partly wrong. 5*.
Book number five in the PI Jax Diamond Mystery series. Black Jack is a fabulous read. Jax and Ace, his partner (an Alsation dog for those not in the know), are up to their ears in multiple cases, ones which Jax assumes are going to be simple to solve. Gail Meath is an author whose books I have loved since the very first Jax Diamond book. I was really looking forward to revisiting them all for this review.
As I said, Jax assumes his cases will be simple to solve. Well, I don't think so! Not this time. Laura decides that she is going to lead a hand and do some digging, along with some friends and Ace added in.
As I always find with this author, the book goes along at a great pace. The fact that I find this series such a fun read makes it such a pleasure to be back with Jax, Ace, and Laura. I felt like I was catching up with everyone while reading Black Jack. The twists and turns were so well placed, and it was great seeing Jax finally hoping for the answers he needed from his investigation. This is a story that just whizzes by, and before I knew it, it was time to leave the characters again. It's a mystery series that's fun and intriguing, too. Thanks to ZooLoo's Book Tours and Gail Meath for the gifted ebook to write my honest review.
Blackjack is the fifth book in the Jax Diamond Mysteries Series.
Jax and his partner Ace have several different cases which at first do not seem connected, and he gets a weekend job with Nick that pays him quite a bit more money than he usually gets for his jobs. At first Jax overlooks things on the new job after a couple of weekends he begins to see things are not on the up and up.
Laura is concerned right away but can't seem to get through to Jax. So, she starts to investigate Jax's past at the orphanage and begins to uncover things Jax should have learned on his own. It gets rocky between the love birds with his odd hours at the weekend job. Laura has a couple of near misses and a few people following her. Jax also finds himself in danger. Will Ace and Laura come to the rescue as Jax comes face to face with his past.
This is another fun fast read in the series. The characters are tight knit group of friends that are easy to like and entertaining. I liked the new direction Jax found himself in on the new steamboat restaurant owned by Nick. It added to the story of Jax and Ace. Looking forward to the next chapter with this mystery solving duo.
I received an ARC from BookSirens for an unbiased review.
I've been a huge fan of this series from the very beginning and have been dying to catch up. Blackjack is book 6 featuring Jax Diamond and his loyal hound Ace, along with Laura. This time it seems Jax seems to be present every time there is a serious crime in the town. Alongside that Nick turns Jaxs head with his cruise boat, and it seems there's a person or two following Laura. It's high intensity, the action doesn't let up, even though this is on the cozier end of the crime scale. Its set in the 1920s America, so I love reading about the cars and speakeasys etc. I loved the interactions between the many characters, and was really intrigued by Winnie out of the mysterious ones. She was staying hidden but it seemed like she was trying to help. There are a couple of rival gangs at war, and mysteries going back decades. What appears unconnected at the begin seems to become more important. Laura and her friends were brilliant. I know women weren't given a lot of credit in that era. But along with rehearsing for a Broadway show that she's the star of, she manages to help investigate behind Jaxs back because of her concern for him. A lot of questions are asked and answered about Jaxs origins in this book. I had slight goosebumps at the ending too.
Gail has done it again, so many twists and turns- excitement and thrills! What a page turner! Jax adventures continues and as his list piles up, it soon becomes apparent to Laura that he can't handle it all on his own or that he wasn't willing to handle it, so she and her friends take matters into their own hands. The faithful Ace continues to stay by their sides and come to the rescue many times. As I read I felt that I had already read this book but then I figured it was similarities in previous books. I recommend grabbing all the books in this series and escape into a time of gang/mafia action that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I am super excited for Jax and all the answers this book held and can't wait to see what the future holds.
ou received this book for free.

Another absolutely great Jax Diamond story! I loved it from the first to the last page. Very well written, fast paced and keeps you intrigued, wanting to know more. You don’t want the story to end and you’re almost sad as the end draws near. Is this the end of the most enjoyable series I have ever read?
I love the history bits at the end of the book, the pictures with every chapter. These books would make a great movie/ series! Gail, please don’t ever stop writing! I can’t wait for your next book!

Blackjack is book 5 in the Jax Diamond Mystery by Gail Meath. I have read all of the books in this series, and, they are excellent. Blackjack is over the top fantastic! There is so much action and surprises and unexpected characters kept me guessing about what was going to happen. I can recommend Blackjack to all lovers of cozy mysteries. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
Jax is looking for his past. Though Laura is his future
Roaring Twenties, SpeakEasys, gang shooting, corruption in the city. Jax, with his sidekick, Ace is looTheking for his story. He and Laura have more than a few mysteries to solve. Will they solve them? Will they live to see her opening night? I highly recommend this book. It's the 5th book in a fantastic series. Ms.Meath has written another hit.
It's my second book by this author and she is now on my favorite authors list. Engaging characters (especially Ace) and the situations were believable. The humor made it wonderful. Highly recommend.
So many surprises in this book. It was a lot of fun to read and untangle some of Jax' past. There were some of the same favorite characters and a few new ones to learn their secrets. Can't wait to dive into the next book in the series.
This is Book 5 in "Jax Diamond Mysteries". Jax has a lot on his mind at the minute, wondering what his real name is, but also he's in love with Laura, but he doesn't think he's enough for her. Laura is worried about Jax, but after finding some information and letting Jax know about it, could be just what he's been looking for to give him the break he needs. Will Jax and Ace find out the truth? There are a few twists in the book, but if you keep your eyes open and keep reading, you might just find a few clues that Gail has left us to find. That's all I'm saying about it.
Such an adventure! Jax has befriended and spends much of his time with a suspicious fellow who owns a steamboat restaurant/casino while his investigative work is piling up back at the office. Laura feels something is shady about this buddy, so she and her lady friends join forces to "help" Jax solve the cases that have backed up--without Jax's knowledge. Of course, danger abounds as the ladies delve deeper into each case. . . I absolutely love this series! Great character descriptions and camaraderie make me feel like I'm part of the "gang". I especially love Laura, who is portrayed as an independent woman, getting out to fix Jax's car when it break down, yet is supportive to his role as a private investigator/detective. We also learn more of Jax's parents and his connection to the orphanage. Blackjack is a wonderful addition to this quirky and exciting series, and I highly recommend it! I received a complimentary ARC of this book and have voluntarily given my honest opinion in this review.
This is another excellent book by Gail Meath. I like the Jax Diamond Mystery series. Each book has been entertaining, but this book's story is a little unique. I won't tell you why that would spoil it. That made this book even better than the rest. If you want good entertainment, this book series is for you.
After their unexpected nightmare of a holiday in Millbury, Jax is looking forward to a few easy cases and spending time with his Broadway star girlfriend Laura. But when the cases are suddenly complicated by murder, Jax is thrown headlong into a mystery involving gangs, nuns and concealed identities. This is a rip roaring read, bringing strongly to life America in the 1920’s. There’s a wonderful cast of characters and I loved the way how the women are all portrayed as strong and resilient. The action doesn’t let up and kept me reading at a breakneck pace. This story had everything to keep me turning the pages, action, drama, romance, and I found myself smiling quite a lot at the scenes with Ace. Blackjack is a fabulous read, and once again Gail has produced a story which had me invested completely in the lives of Jax, Laura and Ace. Roll on the autumn when I can get my hands on book 6!
To start, WOW! Blackjack is engrossing, riveting, captivating! One thing I love most about the Jax Diamond series is that all the plot lines come together and end at the same point. When this book begins it seems everyone is being pulled in different directions, but through collaboration and help from friends they bring everything back together.
The characters in this book are great. You get to see a different side of Jax, while you get to see Laura in action, and Ace always being there and few steps ahead of his humans. I love the fact that Murph, Carla, Jeanie, Orin, and Snake are all in this book. Each character add their own unique dynamic that levels up the story. My personal favorite is the dynamic between Ace and Snake. There’s no better judge of character than that of a dog.
I won’t go into to too much detail, because I don’t want to leave any spoilers, but there is so much ground covered in the short period of time set in the book. I cannot wait to see where the story goes from here.
For me, it’s not very often that I find a book that is so engaging that I sit and read it in a day, but I did with this book (and a few others in the series). This series is one of the best series I’ve read and is one I will come back and reread in the future; I also plan to listen to the audiobooks.
As always, I highly recommend this book and the entire series. Give it a go! If you’re a mystery, cozy mystery, historical cozy mystery, historical mystery, or are just looking for a great book to read, then this is for you!
Book 5 in the PI Jax Diamond Mysteries Series, it’s 1923 in New York City, and I think this is my favourite so far. This time Jax, his partner Ace (an Alsatian dog) get involved in a number of different cases and for a while Jax seems to lose his way. Well written and very well plotted storyline with multiple strands all meeting up seamlessly. Amongst the wonderful storyline there are interesting factual details that add to the mystery.
Briefly, Jax has what he thinks will be three easy cases to deal with, but of course that’s not going to happen! Laura is concerned about Jax’s new friend who owns a luxury steamboat and the fact that Jax isn’t dealing with his PI cases. Only one answer Laura decides to do a bit of sleuthing with help from her friends and Ace!
Fast paced with some great twists and turns as Jax’s longest running investigation looks like it might reach a conclusion that will give him the answers he’s been searching for. A fairly quick and easy read and a wonderful mystery drama in this fun and exciting series. I loved it.
A really good Murder mystery in this the 5th book in this series. Jax is not working to his normal high standard, he can’t focus as he realises that he is in love with Laurel. She’s just got a big break in her chosen career, and will be a star. This makes him worry that he’s not enough for her, is his career enough to support her, or does he need to up his game. Then he gets a job offer that seems to good to be true. And he’s also desperate to know who he really is.
I enjoyed this book, as I did the others in the series. Any book which has a lovely German Shepherd as a sidekick like Ace, is a winner. The other characters, such as Orin, Laurel and Tim, are really well written, fully developed and interesting. The clues are all there, and the stories weave together beautifully. Nice to have answers to some questions that have run through the series.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is my favorite book book of the series to date as we get to know a little bit of Jax's mysterious background. PI Jax takes on three assignments that he perceived as easy but they turn into one big complication after another. I was quickly turning the pages from the first sentence through the twists and turns to the satisfying conclusion. As well the descriptions of NYC in the 1920's are sublime, enhanced by the beautiful pictures heading each chapter. I would be amiss if I didn't mention the supporting cast of characters-Nick Gallo was brilliantly portrayed and I enjoyed how he worked around the laws of prohibition, Jax's dog Ace provides moments of humor and Laura's role and her love for Jax shine in this book. I received a copy for free, and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily. I highly recommend pouring yourself a drink, playing some Jazz and get lost in this wonderful read.
Blackjack is the fifth instalment in Gail Meath’s Jax Diamond series and I think it is the best yet. The regular characters who we have met along the way, Jax and Laura, Tim and Carla, and of course the wonderful Ace, come together again to solve murder and mystery abound. I loved the way Laura’s character has grown – while she’s busy rehearsing for her starring role in the musical “Songbird” which was written for her, she also takes a stronger role supporting Jax and Ace in their sleuthing. Intertwining mysteries flow through the book, with a delightful ending as Jax solves the mystery of his own past, an issue which has been nagging him since we first met him. I am very much looking forward to what Book 6, “Killjoy” will bring. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This suspense filled story of a private investigator and his dog and the woman he loves. Jax Diamond can't believe he has three cases at the same time but something is off .the cases seem to be connected in some way.Nazis so proud of his girlfriend just landed a lead in a Broadway play. She has the voice of a angel .But he's afraid that as her career soars he is afraid he will lose her. Jax knows she's the one for him and his dog Ace loves her she love Acetoo. But Jax knows a private investigator will never make the kind of money to give her the life she deserves. Danger seems to be following His girl Laura but he doesn't know .Danger is after him too. There are so many twists an turns to this story you will be riveted til the very last page .I can hardly wait to see what's next by this multi talented author.
This book was wonderful. Learning more about the character of Jax and reading about his friends and his dog Ace again, felt like coming home. The warmth of the character's relationships and the great writing really drew me into the story.
In this one, we learn more about Jax's mysterious beginnings and his growing relationship with a singer named Laura. His dog Ace is all grown up and is still helping Jax and now Laura as well, to solve mysteries and helping to keep them safe.
If you haven't read a Jax Diamond book yet, I highly recommend them. They take place in the 1920's-30's during a time when mob bosses and gangsters were big in places like New York and Chicago. Gail Meath does a marvelous job of bringing it all to life once more.
Thank you to BookSirens, the author and publisher the chance to read this book and this is my honest review.
I do enjoy the Jax Diamond Mysteries and this is my fourth and possibly my favourite. We’ve moved on a bit, though Jax and Laura have only known each other a few months, but it’s obvious they are deeply in love.
Laura has the starring role in a new musical called Songbird, which opens in a few days on Broadway, while Jax is up to his ears in new cases. There’s a missing woman called Mary, a man thrown out of a window, a fire that kills two people and Laura thinks she’s being followed. A mysterious woman keeps popping up, but so does a man ‘bearing gifts’. All very strange and worrying.
But it’s Jax’s police mate’s wife’s birthday and Jax just happens to be doing some investigation work for a man named Nick Gallo, who owns The Cabaret – a fabulous floating night club. Instead of payment, Jax asks Nick if he could have a table for four for Carla’s birthday and Nick happily agrees.
Towards the end of a brilliant evening, Nick asks Jax to work for him, but it’s not his usual line of work. And everything else now takes a back seat. What’s up with Jax? Laura is worried, as is Jax’s sidekick, German Shepherd Ace.
It’s all far more complicated than Jax realises. Is he being taken for a mug or using the opportunity to earn big bucks? We’ll have to see how the intricate plot works itself out and there are certainly plenty of surprises along the way.
Many thanks to @zooloo2008 for inviting me to be part of this blog tour.
More historical colour in this series. Prohibition and how pleasure boats were used to drink spirits off-shore. This obviously leads to corruption. Jax and his dog ACE investigate but also Jax appears to be seduced by the off-shore drinking scam. Laura his girlfriend is more grounded and resists the easy charm of money.
So why are people involved in this world being killed….?
Laura! Jax and ACE investigate! They follow the murders, the past connections and other clues…
The culmination is an excellent reveal.
A well plotted mystery that depicts the prohibition years in New York very well.

I have discovered a new author! This author creates great stories with strong plots and relatable characters. The plots have several twists and turns throughout that kept me guessing and very interested to see how it would all wrap up. I enjoy the historical context as well as it makes it more realistic. I enjoy looking up references and digging deeper so this is up my alley (so to speak). If you enjoy the 1920’s,(gangsters and heroes) this is an author, book, series for you! I look forward to reading the next book!
I received an ARC copy of the book and all opinions are my own.
