Another well crafted adventure for Quintus & his mates!
All Quintus' adventures have been spectacularly wrought & this is one of the best.
Denby has a great style & a way of painting a picture of locale that has me scouring map apps to try & ascertain where the action is taking place, as if it were actual history.
But no. It's just a really finely written piece of historical fiction &, thankfully, well edited.
This is a book series for all lovers of adventure stories. The characters are beautifully fleshed out, whether hero or villain, friend or foe, soldier or civilian, slave or even beast. All are written with purpose & care.
The action is visceral, described without hesitation or thought for those with delicate sensibilities.
I finished this in one day & will probably read Book 5 just as quickly.
Start this series from Book 1, though. It's well worth your time & money & one day; one day, hopefully, the men will get paid & actually make it back to Rome.
I mourn some of those lost over the series, while quite a few more are not missed. That the prose can elicit those feelings for the players is a testament to its quality.
