A perplexed sleuth. And an ice-cold slaying. Step into 1920s London, where the festive season is in full swing. Veronica Vale is looking forward to Christmas at the Swan Tavern with her dear friend Ruby, her dog Benji, and a group of friends, old and new.
But as snow blankets the city, a tragedy shatters the merriment. John Robinson, a charismatic newcomer, meets a chilling end. His death is considered by most to be a tragic accident, but Veronica senses something amiss, a puzzle waiting to be unravelled like a Christmas ribbon. And what was an injured swan doing trapped underneath his body?
Veronica and Ruby are determined to unveil the truth. As they delve into the party guests’ secrets, they discover a web of mysteries, and with each clue they unearth, they inch closer to a chilling revelation that they have a killer at their gathering.
Will the party end in mince pies and merriment, or is there more tragedy to come?
*** This is book 6 in the Veronica Vale Investigates series and is full of Christmas mystery and cozy crime. If you love witty dialogue, laugh-out-loud moments, 1920s British historical glamour, intrigue, and a fast-paced mystery, you’ll adore Kitty Kildare’s unputdownable whodunnits.
this was certainly preferable to the book that came before it - though i missed jacob templeton's interventions. the mystery was more interesting and less winded than book 5 and so it was an easier read for me. this series has been good so far and with two books left to go I'm interested to see how the overarching mystery will be solved - which i assume will be book 8 considering book 7 does not appear to be centralised on the now overarching mystery that was hinted at between the end of book 5 and intermittent points of book 6.
I'm not usually a fan of the historic cozies, but this one is set in the same time period as Downton Abbey, so I decided to give it a chance. I liked it enough that I plan to read the first book in the author's new series. The background of what the leading women characters did during WWI were hinted at. I wanted more details, but I realize in a novella one doesn't get all the goodies from a full length novel.
This limited-edition book has been tucked away for now. It'll soon be available in an exclusive anthology and available in winter 2024 with a new cover and expanded content.
