Remembering demons has a lot going on...like a ton, and it's easy to get lost and start questioning what's actually happening. I really had a great time reading it, especially since the setting is one of my favorites. If you like books set in asylums...add it to the tbr right now.
I enjoyed the story and the overall writing style. I think Cornelious beautifully combined elements of thriller, horror, paranormal, and fantasy. I am eager to see what happens next.... let's go book 2!

I’d classify Remembering Demons as a work of weird fiction that follows Darryl, a man currently residing in a psychiatric hospital suffering from amnesia and hallucinations of demons in mirrors. With the intention of getting better and working to uncover and deal with his psychological traumas, the presence of demons and something much more sinister leaves you wondering, is Darryl truly insane or is everything happening actually real?
The author creates a Konstantine- like story with elements of horror, science fiction, and the supernatural pushing the boundaries of reality while exploring the psyche of someone haunted by his past. It was really interesting to read a book that as I was reading it had me wondering whether or not what character was experiencing was actually real or a figment of some psychiatric disorder.

My gosh! What an epic tale. The very talented author messed my head up with this one - in a good way - if that's even possible, ha! I have to say I love Hubble's character!
I was starting to loose my own grip on what was real and what was 'imaginary' as it felt more real than what you would expect the 'real' life to be.
I absolutely LOVE the way the author has written this, it literally kept me on the very edge of reality the whole time, I was finding it so very hard to put this down - as well as getting annoyed with my own eye balls for giving up on me at 3am.
Not going to lie but I was sussing my own mirrors and quickly cleaning up spillages, even though nothing was seen - still not sure if that's a good thing or if I've lost / or never had that talent to begin with..
I'm very keen to read book 2 - "Fighting angels" and see what happens next with Daryl.. I hope hubble is in there too!
Favourite quote - "Like hell, imp." "Don't start, psycho" - this had me howling in laughter, probably more than it should have.

I loved the mix from horror, to fantasy to mythology, Gods, Gnomes, Demons, monsters, mental health issues. This book has it all. The story follows Daryl who is in an asylum. Daryl is suffering from amnesia and frequently has hallucinations, often horrifying in nature. His closest friend is an invisible gnome called Hubble. Daryl has vivid dreams that appear too vivid to not be real but his therapist Susan is trying to help him to understand that the monsters are not real and this is just his mind trying to protect itself from facing the reality of past trauma...
The story is well written and had lots of detail which felt researched and gave it depth. I loved the cast of characters. Daryl was believable in his quest to find the truth and the author did a great job with the complexity of his emotional states throughout his journey.
I also liked that this felt like a different take on an asylum type horror book. It had the claustrophobic setting but it was also fresh and had me invested... I might stay away from reflective surfaces for a while!
The ending leaves everything open for book two and I will definitely continue with the series to find out what happens next!

Having reread this in preparation for book two, I am very pleased I did, as this book is quite multifaceted.
I stand by my initial review, and it is undoubtedly a five-star read. While it may not appeal to everyone, those who get it, GETS IT. @JCORNELIUS writing drew me in, curious to find out what's going on in Daryl's head, is it real is it all a fiction of his imagination, or the ramblings of a mad man?

The day I started this book I was working. Just finished paperwork and had the lab to myself, which is not normal on my week but I was filling in for someone on another week. I heard creaking three times. I looked around and my brain went "weird, maybe it is your chair." So I leaned back and told myself that it was the chair 'cause it sounded similar. Not much longer my hair got brushed over my shoulder and I felt a feather like touch behind my ear. I jumped so high out of my chair and NOPED out of there so fast, after calming myself in the lobby I decided to leave early. After that it took me a second to get back to the book, but once I did I really enjoyed it.
Remembering Demons made you question, along with Daryl what was true and what was not. He is in an asylum but there is something strange happening, people are seeming to disappear and no one seems to notice, but Daryl. Daryl also has a best friend, who is imaginary and owns a chicken.. so there is that hahaha.
If you enjoy books that really make you question, make you laugh, has sprinkling of comedy and mystery then this book is up your alley!

In some ways, this book is so hard to review, especially if the goal is to keep it more or less spoiler-free, which I would love to try and do here. Because I do think this book deserves going in blind (and no, reading the description on the back of the book will not spoil anything).
"Remembering Demons" is an interesting blend of various genres: there are elements of fantasy, horror, mystery and even sci-fi. And the main plot of the story ties strongly into psychological themes, such as dealing with trauma and grief, and how that affects an individual's mental health.
Our main character Daryl is in an asylum with no memory of his life before being committed. Oh, and he sees monsters in mirrors and one of his friends is an invisible gnome, of course. So starts the reader's journey of trying to figure out what's real and what's not and what even happened to Daryl alongside our protagonist. In many ways, the story feels like a much darker version of Alice falling down the rabbit hole – Daryl's experiences and encounters fall firmly into the realm of surrealism, and made me think of American McGee's "Alice" video games multiple times (which I adore).
But at the same time, the story also has lighter moments and lots of humour interwoven throughout. So it's a smorgasbord of genres and moments that'll have you puzzling over what's going to happen next. And it pays off by revealing the truth layer by layer.
I had a fun time reading this and am looking forward to the second book to find out how Daryl's story is going to continue. And if you tend to enjoy these types of weirder, out of the box stories, I'd recommend picking up "Remembering Demons".

Remembering Demons throws you straight into a confusing and dynamic world, giving the reader a taste of what our main character, Daryl, is dealing with as he finds himself in an asylum, suffering with not only amnesia but companions that no one else can see.
Adding to the ordeal, Daryl is afraid to look at anything capable of holding a reflection.
How did he get there? What’s within the mirrors? Why can’t he remember?
Daryl learns quickly that all is not as it seems, both the world he finds himself in and himself.
This is an exciting read that puts the reader through the same pain as Daryl, and blues the lines between the real world and the world of the supernatural. Which is which is up to the reader to decide. Very happy to have read this and I’m looking forward to the next stage in the saga.

Remembering Demons was a interesting read to say for sure.
With a bit less than 300 pages, it's for sure alot of stuff happening. Where there are some really great things as him being in the insane asylum, and fascinating/creepy places inside is head.
Sometimes I found myself having to put down the book, because even if it is a good story with fascinating characters. I found myself sometimes get lost in Daryl's insanity and getting some itching in my brain trying to figure out if it's real or he's just crazy. For me, I for sure feel a bit more crazy after reading thisone, and I bet Cornelius is sitting home laughing at the craziness people have to get trough in Remembering Demons.
And the thing with these types of books, they really pisses me off. With not knowing if it's real or not, and that just messes up with my head.
But at some point I started to love the book, characters, and the world. Super excited to see what the next instalment will bring!

Daryl has a lot of issues and is undergoing therapy.
But along the way it's uncovering a terrifying past.
He must confront the death of his daughter Ginny for one thing.
But something is within him waiting to pounce.
Dr. Walker is attempting to teach him to deal with all this but his own mind is producing hallucinations wherein he learns of something even more evil stalking him.
The only way he can survive and live after is to confront and overcome the memories that caused his insanity and landed him where he is.
This was a really clever story, inventive writing and great characters.
The tone and scope of it reminded me a little of King's "Dark tower."
Definitely looking forward to the sequel.

Oh this was so good!!!! It completely played with my mind. This is the first book to ever come under the horror genre that's done this!
The premise of the book was excellent. The story flowed well. The visuals were excellent and were extremely creepy. The ending was perfect ending it on a cliffhanger.
The characters were amazing. Daryl was brilliant. He made me question his entire reality. The other characters were perfect and they all worked well to make this such a brilliant read.
The book was written in third, entirely from Daryl's point of view. This worked well and it helped us get into his head and try to work out what was going on.
I cannot recommend this enough to you all. Especially if you love dark fantasy and horror.

I felt confused reading this one its was as if it was coming from therapists inside his head and daryl being trapped in the mirror, it's like he was lost in limbo between two worlds, it reminded of a Darren shan book and Shutter island with so much going on it is a psychological thrillers, but saying that I did enjoy it but didn't love it due to being confused reading it the confusion eases when get to the twist but I feel there still alot more to find out and what's actually going on.

Wow! The story draws you in immediately from the beginning. I could feel all the constantly changing emotions that the main character was feeling throughout the story as he tried to remember his past and who he was. The story is able to flow by the way it seamlessly went from the present to memories of the past. I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed the story and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

First of all I want to start by saying how incredibly captivating the authors writing is, the way they introduce the main character Daryl - talking to his therapist about all he remembers is pain then dying then waking up in the asylum - instantly brings the curiosity to make you read on to find out what happened to him. Add to this the visions his seeing of demons in anything that reflects - mirrors and even in the toilet bowl 😱 makes for a brilliant mind spin of trying to work out what is reality and what isn’t.
The characters were absolutely brilliant especially Hubble I loved the humour he bought to the situation 🤣
This book was just brilliant had everything I loved mystery, magic, suspense, demons, gods, angels and more.
I must confess also that reading this reminded me of a childhood fear I had about things in the mirror and I had to keep reminding myself that this was just a story and it’s not real…I hope 😅 very much looking forward to the next one 🤩

This is a happy little saga of confusion and mystery. I was lucky enough to enjoy this book as an ARC reader and can only say it put me through my paces.
I found myself confused and drawn in throughout, each new chapter made me question every moment.
Daryl our main character finds himself in an asylum terrified of the mirrors within the place and not to mention the basement but with the people along the way he’s able to muster some support and help to help put things together.
Amnesia focused on filling in the gaps.
This is a happy little saga of confusion and mystery. I was lucky enough to enjoy this book as an ARC reader and can only say it put me through my paces.

If you are into the supernatural with a big splash of mysteriousness and humor, this book is for you!
The mystery about the main character Daryl and his situation draws you in immediately and it makes you want to know more. And that makes it hard to put the book down.
Throughout the book you're taken on Daryl's rollercoaster ride of emotions and you get invested in solving the mystery that is Daryl and the mystery he is surrounded by.
The questions that arises in you when you read will be answered - the question you will sit with most of the time is; what is real and what's not?
The clever use of mythology, lore, humor and horror in this book makes it a great read!
This says a lot about the authors imagination and creativity.
It's not "boogeyman in your closet" scary but it does provide an eerie feeling at times - the eerie feeling of the unknown. And the humor in the book will make you laugh multiple times.
The pace of the book takes off around half way in, which needs you to focus to not loose the red thread of the story in my opinion.
This makes me give it 4 out of 5 stars.

I will recommend this book to friends and family who I know appreciate this kind of genre.

I'm an avid Stephen King reader and I really enjoyed this book!
I will recommend this book to friends and family who I know appreciate this kind of genre.

I absolutely adored this book. The author did a fantastic job of world-building and world blending - urban fantasy is my favourite type of fantasy, and I really enjoyed the way the 'real' and fantasy worlds in this story meshed together. The best bit, however, was by far the characters - there were so many with such clear personalities. I loved the protagonist, I loved the deuteragonists, I even loved the barely-mentioned-agonists. Remembering Demons brought a lot of humour and a bit of absurdism to the modern fantasy genre, and I'm incredibly excited for the sequel.

J. Cornelius has somehow managed to turn a psychiatric ward into the setting for the year's most unexpectedly hilarious read. "Remembering Demons" follows Daryl, who wakes up in an asylum with amnesia and immediately befriends an invisible gnome while being terrorized by creatures that live in mirrors—and somehow, this premise works brilliantly.
The real star of this madcap adventure is Hubble, whose character is an absolute comedic treasure. Cornelius has crafted what might be literature's most lovable invisible companion since Harvey the rabbit, except Hubble comes with significantly more sass and an apparent PhD in sarcasm. Their banter with Daryl ranges from philosophical discussions about the nature of reality to heated debates over pudding flavors, and every interaction is comedy gold.
The mirror monsters, rather than being genuinely terrifying, become almost like dysfunctional roommates who keep interrupting Daryl's attempts at self-discovery with their dramatic appearances. Cornelius plays this supernatural horror element completely straight, which somehow makes it even funnier—imagine trying to have a serious therapy session while a demon is making faces at you from the bathroom mirror.
The asylum setting becomes a perfect stage for absurdist humor. Daryl's earnest attempts to piece together his identity while navigating group therapy sessions, medication schedules, and the general chaos of institutional life creates a kind of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" meets "Good Omens" vibe that shouldn't work but absolutely does.
What's most impressive is how Cornelius balances the comedy with genuine heart. Yes, you'll laugh out loud at Hubble's one-liners and Daryl's bewildered reactions to his bizarre circumstances, but you'll also find yourself genuinely invested in his journey toward understanding himself.

I knew that I was going to love this book as soon as I spotted this creepy front cover image!
It screamed horror, monsters, asylum and all things I love in a good book!
I was not disappointed!!
The only thing that I disliked, was having to temper my reading to make it last the whole month, as this was a chosen readalong book for March!
I failed! And raced to the end early!
However, I'm struggling to be able to do justice to this here and am still thinking about the characters and events in the book - but how to convey this without spoilers.....
Well, this was a totally wild ride and I was sucked right in from the very first few chapters.
Being set in a totally spooky asylum sets the tone for the whole book so well and I soon became embedded in the life that the patients were leading.
We follow the experiences from Daryl's pov and, given his condition, it's not long before you're left wondering what is in his head and what is likely real.
We jump around a fair amount too which adds to the feeling of disconnect, travelling through memories, dream states and seeming actual events which had me totally immersed the whole way - although definitely feeling like I could be going crazy too!
This gave me Alice In Wonderland crossed with The Witches Of Eastwick vibes in places - both favourites of mine!
There was a huge diversity in the characters and I loved this.
I spent some time wondering (and hoping) who was real or imagined and later on, actually who was who - but I can't say much more about that....
I adored some of the travellers and I think (given I love gnomes) my favourite character was Hubble!
The writing was just brilliant, from the world building to the descriptions - I had such vivid images in my head of each encounter.
I loved the fast-pacing and the short chapters kept tempting me to read on and on.
As I said, I'm still considering the events and wondering about some of the characters, days after finishing.
I'm diving into the bonus short story offered by the author and am so, so excited to see where book 2 will take us next .....

This book was such a crazy journey, but in a good way and I loved it! Daryl is living in an asylum, haunted by demons and with complete amnesia he remembers nothing before waking up there. It was exciting right from the start and I was hooked trying to work out what was going on and piecing everything together. The whole way through you're stuck in a constant cycle of thinking the visions are real and the therapist just obviously doesn't believe in supernatural powers to agreeing with Susan and thinking it really is all in his head trying to come up with a coping mechanism to stop him remembering whatever memories he's repressed. I went back and forth multiple times until the last about 30% where I felt pretty sure. I really enjoyed trying to work out the timeline of things, because Daryl had lots of vague feelings, his imaginary friends mentioned things, he had dreams that seemed like memories and also walked through some memories in hypnotherapy so at times when I was assuming it was all real (or at least a mostly real memory with potentially added demons) it was fun trying to guess what order everything happened in since Daryl himself couldn't confirm and wasn't even sure if they were real or not. I don't want to give any spoilers but it truly was a fun ride, with so many different aspects involved. Angels, demons, all kinds of creatures! I loved all the characters too, particularly Hubble, he was my personal favourite haha! I believe there's more coming and I'm definitely interested to read them!

Can definitely recommend this novel. It's an exciting read, both story, world, characters, humor and so on. And while you can see the inspiration from the Dresden files, The Dark Tower and so on, it still offers unique worldbuilding, with a character arc not seen before. Let's just say it is rare that fantasy are actually inspired by science as its foundation, and it seems that novels are always about love or friendship at its core not family. And if it's about family, I can't remember it ever being about a father and his daughter. Can't wait for sequel!
I can also recommend the short story set between book 2 and 3 (Cathing Spiders), which has been published even before the author has finished writing book 2. Something that shows the range of the author, as it is hard to make that work without either the story being boring or full of spoilers for what is to come. It can be downloaded for free, the link is shown on the author's Goodreads page. Though I wouldn't recommend starting with the short story before this novel, if you want to check the author out for free, because it does contain some spoilers in that regard. Instead just get a sample for this novel, as it is great way check it out, though be prepared to spend 3 USD not long after reading the sample.

Remembering Demons is definitely an horror but I would say it also falls in the genre of weird fiction (which is one of my favourites). I loved this book and will confess I read it quickly and then had to reread it during the readalong to enjoy it all over again. Daryl is a wonderful protagonist that gave me a slight vibe of Harry Dresden which was another bonus. The world building and ‘horror/fantasy’ elements were so well incorporated to the novel it became completely believable while reading and almost second nature to see ‘demons, gnomes’ and who knows what else.
I did love the hint of potentially unreliable narrator through Daryl being in the Asylum but us slowly realising he isn’t in fact suffering from delusions. I also loved the tone of the book that switched from horror, series to a little light hearted at times (for me anyway). The main thing that stood out for me was the way the ending mirrors the beginning in a way which I loved given the connection to mirrors throughout but not spoilers as usual.
If you are a fan of horror or weird fiction you need to read this asap. You will not be disappointed at all.

The moment I saw this come into my inbox and I read the blurb, I jumped on it. However, if you told me I would be endlessly entertained by characters arguing over physics, that was a little harder to read. This book was everything I didn't know I wanted.
Daryl is in a psychiatric hospital. That's bad enough, but he also sees things in the mirrors. Is that his psychosis or is it real? A truly wild ride, we follow Daryl as he fights to learn the truth, something that in this case, is stranger than fiction. Can we believe what he sees? Can he?
I love an unreliable narrator and he most definitely is. The pacing is fairly quick and we get right into the oddness. This is one you'll want to pay attention when reading because there's a ton going on in under 300 pages, but the author manages to masterfully steer us through the twist and turns of it all, leaving the reader both feeling satisfied, and ready for what happens next.
I cannot recommend this one enough to you if you enjoy your fantasy dark and with a side of horror. 5🌟

Whilst this book took me a while longer to read, and also longer to get my head around than other books, when I finally managed to, it was a brilliant and amazingly clever story. The plot was so unique - I have never read anything quite like this - and so well written and executed. All of the character development and the world building were great, too. There were times I found myself lost in the world this author has provided us, that it was easy to forget I was actually reading, being able to clearly see it playing out. Descriptions of the places seen and the "things" that occupied them were top-notch. The way in which everything feels so jumbled up as you are navigating through the story very cleverly mirrors Daryl as a character, his mental state, and also the storyline too. This, in itself, is a very impressive feat, and I have to take my hat off to the author.
It is not my normal type of book to read, but I am so glad I persevered with it and got to the end...well, the end for now, I suppose! I can't wait to get my hands on the next one and would most certainly recommend picking this book up and getting stuck in!

I received Remembering Demons as a ARC for a honest review.
I started the book and was taken into a thrill ride. This books has everything.
Sometimes I had to question myself what is happening actually and what is a fantasy.
This book is a combination of horror and fantasy and it gets in your head. I was so invested in the characters and the story that I was actually living it. I am a very very picky reader and I always give honest reviews as an ARC and I was not disappointed with “Remembering Demons”
If you enjoy horror and fantasy and like both combined this book will be for you. And if you don’t this book is recommended.
Daryl is a strong character and the book is very well written.
I don’t give out spoilers as I want the next reader to enjoy the book as much as I did.

Remembering Demons is a book unlike any other. But in a good way:) It is also the first book in The God Cycle Series by J. Cornelius. Our story is about Daryl our MMC who has seen things in mirrors his whole life. Daryl has no memories before arriving at the Asylum and talking to the doctor. There is so much that happens in this book. This is a dark fantasy read which has a lot of weird stuff happening in this book but I loved it and found myself reading the whole thing from cover to cover. Daryl keeps having real dreams and not just dreams that you know are fake. He gets visits from people who are not there, monsters in the mirrors, and some angel like creatures along with the opposite. There are some horror elements in this one too folks, for fans like myself who love horror books. This is a read that will make you question reality versus non-reality. I loved this book and highly recommend this read to fans of dark fantasy and questioning real vs. fake realities.
