Free Falling: Bayou Dogs MC Book 1

Rate this book
T he deal is I get Darcy and the baby. He gets out of town.

I’m a man who knows what he wants, and I knew within minutes of meeting Darcy that I wanted her. She’s the real-life version of my dream girl. So what if she’s married to a former friend? He certainly doesn’t deserve her. But I do. Nothing can stop me from claiming not only her, but six-week-old Owen.

In exchange for a debt, her husband agrees to skip town and never return, allowing Darcy to start rebuilding the life her husband destroyed…one with me by her side. But Darcy has a lot of healing to do, not only from her husband but from her parents. She thinks I’m playing a game with her, and maybe I am.

Except I play for keeps.Free Falling is a low-angst standalone MC romance with a heroine who tries to hold her own against a jealous possessive morally gray hero. “Tries” being the operative word.

I couldn’t decided between 4 and 5 on this one so I’ll say 4.25. A MC book with no OW drama and no sweet butts?! Yes please!! I was pretty sure those didn’t even exist.

I actually really loved this book. I loved that Dane saw Darcy, wanted Darcy and did literally EVERYTHING in his power to get Darcy!! He didn’t let anything stop him, not even Darcy being “married.” I also loved that he started calling Owen his son as soon as he sees him for the first time. They were his family and that was that. Dane’s obsession knew no bounds. He was soooo damn possessive. Like just the thought of Darcy cooking something for one of his MC brothers made him insane. It was hilarious!! And Dane with “their” son was so sweet. There wasn’t much of a plot. Just day in and day out of Danes obsession with her.

I liked Darcy as well. She was sweet and sassy. I liked that she didn’t just fall into his lap. She made him work for it, just a little bit. She did give in way sooner than I thought but I loved Dane so it didn’t bother me at all.

There was no OW drama at all!! Dane didn’t even get hit on, not a single time. In what universe do we have a MC book where the MMC doesn’t get hit on at least a million times? It didn’t happen at all here and it made this book so much better.

But…there was just a few things that kept it from being a full 5 stars. There were typos and a good amount of inconsistencies. A few examples: Dane describes how Couyon rubs his hand over his shaved head and then later Dane says that his son’s hair is all over the place looking like his uncle Couyon. Also we know that Couyon’s old lady is Brittany and Keebler’s old lady is Lashawnda but they are mixed up in the book where Lashawnda talks about how she keeps Couyon happy (where this should have been Brittany saying this). Another is the end where the girl brings a cake to Darcy and says this is for the Bordelon-Williams wedding. Darcy’s last name is not Williams, that was her ex, Seth’s, last name but she explicitly states that they never shared a name. So that definitely threw me off.

All of these things didn’t take the star away but one BIG thing that did? These two MCs, NEVER said I love you to one another. Not in the entire book and not even in the epilogue at their wedding. You know they love each other and are obsessed with each other but neither of them say it or even think about saying it!! It made no sense to me. I was so surprised Dane didn’t say it very early on. Honestly this killed it for me. I don’t need to have that in a book if it seems like more of a HFN but this was 100% a HEA seeing as THEY GOT MARRIED IN THE EPILOGUE. This was a huge oversight in my opinion. Also how old is Dane? Would have been nice to know.

Also I don’t like Mudbug at all and I hope his book is far far away. He’s a huge manwhore and he’s such a hater when it came to Danes feelings for Darcy. I wish we could have found out what the hell his problem was.

NO CHEATING (Darcy does cheat on her “husband” but he’s a bad dude and I don’t want to spoil it but I’m putting husband in quotes for a reason)
NO OW DRAMA
NO TRUE OM DRAMA (dane is just so possessive)
MURDER
NO VIRGINS
BIRTH CONTROL TAMPERING
HEA (except no freaking I love yous!!!!!)

‼️No club girls
‼️Single mom
‼️Small town
‼️Safe
‼️Insta Live but they take time to fall in love to

♥️So deliciously OTT JP craziness I live for these kinds of hero’s!
♥️He jelly of everyone lol - Even his freinds that knew her before him
♥️Immediately pretty early swooning hard over this guy!!

‼️Immediately pretty early on her claims her and her son

‼️A relationship based book so alt is there meeting and falling min live and navigating some issues. Also a lot of set up for the MC and its business.

‼️single mom and The CUTEST daddy moments

This was cute and sweet and I enjoyed it a lot. Gotta love a MC w NO OW at all!!!!

❣️Things I Liked/Loved❣️
ALMOST EVERYTHING!
Love that he never had a GF or woman before! Wish he was soooo experienced.

Things I Did 💔 Not Like
-A bit to long
-Could have used some plot drama in the end
-the h annoyed me at times

🥀 Hero:
Dane- maybe early 30s?
MC VP/Prez

AMAZING! He’s everything we love. ALPHA
OTT JP
SUPER PROTECTIVE
SUPER SWEET AND THOUGHTFUL
A GREAT DADDY TO HIS SON.

♥️THE WHOLE PACKAGE FOR SURE ♥️

🦋 Heroine:
Darcy- early 20s?
Single mom kinda separated from her husband but they live together she is trying to get out.
She was controlled by her religious family and in order to get away from them she met and left with her ex (a loser). So by the time she meets the H she is a bit jaded and she definitely doesn’t trust. So she takes times

‼️At times she was kinda a bitch about stuff… well actually a lot and I liked her but didn’t love her. Cause I hate when the H has to pay for her ex past lol

💭 POV:
First person duel

😡/😍 Angst level:
Medium/low

❤️‍🔥 Sex & Burn Rate:
🔥🔥🔥🔥Pretty fast 30% first sexual interaction 40% full sex

🌓 Push/Pull:
Minor push away from h to H in the beginning

☠️ OW/OM Drama:
NO OW
Mild OM from her ex but they are over before she meets the H

🤮 OW/OM Sex / Fluid or DNA Exchange:
None

🤬 Cheating:
None - she is not really w her “husband”
When she meets the H they are kinda separated and definitely over before she does anything w the H

👰🏼‍♀️ Virgins:
Neither are V

H- definitely highly experiences minimal talks about his past only that he never had a GF or any woman and only had ONS.

h- only had ever been w her baby daddy. And he wasn’t a great guy. 🙄 would have liked something different for once lol

No talks about their last times but the H did say when he met the h he got checked for STD to make sure he was safe to take her bare.

⛈️Separation/ 3rd Act Breakup:
None

Safety⚠️Triggers🗡️:
Stalking
Murder
MC club stuff

🌈Epilogue:
Yes married w a baby on the way

🥂HEA:
Yes but also a HFN

My opinion is just that… MY OPINION.❌
I know we all get passionate about our favorite reads and characters but we should respect each opinions a thoughts. ~Thank you

Very sweet!

Story: ⭐⭐⭐⭐1\2
Trope: instalove
Angst: 😱😱
Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥

Super excited to start Annelise Deveraux's new series the bayou dogs MC! This was a sweet, low drama instalove with a heroine that is already pregnant when the hero meets her. That doesn't stop him from claiming her and her baby as his. If you're a fan of over the top heroes this book will be for you too!

I was so excited for this release and Annelise didn’t let me down! I will read whatever she writes - and she didn’t let me down!

I love the MC world building and characters from page 1 she created. The MC family, humor and small town Cajun feels are perfection! The found family for Darcy - chefs kiss!

Dane is utter perfection as a book hubby- from his amazing dog to his protective and loving care of Darcy and Owen from the minute they meet. When Dane first holds Owen - SWOON - “DNA doesn’t matter anyway when you know a child was meant to be yours” - SWOON! Darcy is strong and sassy but not a black cat ball buster. Even though this is instalove for Dane - (one meeting and he knows Darcy is his dream girl) - the pacing of the story gives him time to get Darcy caught up in his web and with feelings too. He meticulously starts solving problems and clearing the way for their future, no hesitation- the same night he is calling the 6 week old infant his son and family! — did I mention SWOON!

This MC Romance has the jealous MMC (he’s upset his woman cooked for another man), a single mom with a deadbeat hubby, a debt that’s not hers to be repaid and a HEA that has NO cheating, third act breakup, or other woman drama! 10 stars if I could rate it!

Re-read December 2025: I was in the mood for an OTT possessive man and Dane sure delivered!! ❤️

Original review:
I stumbled upon this book yesterday and had a hard time putting it down! I love myself some instalove and this book was mega insta. We get an OTT possessive jealous hero and a strong, sassy heroine. Throw in some lovable side characters, a cool dog and some scorching spice and I’m a happy girl! A safe MC read with no OW drama whatsoever. A rare thing! This was no literary work of art, but a wonderful way to escape real life for a few hours. I was totally here for it and will be looking into other books by this author!

Safety:
- No OW
- OM: h is still ‘married’ to OM when MCs meet. They haven’t actually been together for a long time though and a silly little thing like a marriage was never going to stop our H 😅
- No cheating
- No separation / no third act break up

Free Falling is my new favourite book by Annelise Devereaux. It hit JUST RIGHT.
Dane is ALL IN with Darcy and baby Owen from first glance, the insta-love we have come to know from this author.
Dane is a big bad (but a complete cinna-bun for his girl) biker, who is possesive and jealous as hell (irrationally so), its so fun to read him getting all bent out of shape when his brothers know even the smallest bit of information about Darcy, or she hugs an old friend or a man even looks in her direction 🤣 I love this level of crazy obsessed, I also love that he does everything within his power to only better her life, keep her and Owen safe and protected but not caged, he wants her to be and to feel secure in life, and that is everything ❤️
Darcy has been through it, she has come from a very conservative and sheltered life, one she was happy to branch out from when the threat of an arranged marriage loomed, unfortunately, or fortunately...this lead her to fall pregnant with a less than desirable man who needed to go into the trash asap, enter Dane.
I love that Darcy has a very small amout of pushback when faced with Danes claim of her but ultimately its a fairly half hearted refusal and I need that in my instalove reads, I want them to give in hard and that was delivered so well.
Owen is so adorable, Dane is so adorable with him, Darcy is a wonderful mother to him, gris-gris is a babys best friend, and a club who loves him. 🥰

Tropes:
✔️MC/biker in a small town
✔️Single mother
✔️Breeding and birth control tampering
✔️Majorly, OBSESSIVE J/P OTT
✔️No OW drama and no 3rd act breakup.
✔️Instalove "MINE" vibes.

A tiny peek into Band-aid and Greer has me excited for what comes next.

3.5 - 4 stars!

Dane sees Darcy and her baby and immediately knows they’re his no matter what. He will jump through every and any hoop to keep them.

“Well, lemme tell you something. I’m not your boyfriend. I’m your man. I don’t pick you up for an evening out, then drop you off to sleep alone. I come home to you, stay with you all night, and fuck you like you’re mine. I’m the man who has the taste of your pussy on my lips, not some asshole who’s just hoping to know you better. It’s not the same thing. Do I need to drag you to City Hall for you to understand what all this means?”

This was good but felt a bit toooo long. There was a bit of filler that neither added to the plot or their romance. Dane was OTT and so sweet to his girl. Darcy was just a cool chick that did the best with what life dealt. But overall, an enjoyable low-angst and steamy MC romance!

I loved how Dane was all in the second he saw Darcy. His and Owen’s moments? Beyond cute! I was swooning so hard while reading his POV.

I loved the storyline, the flow, the spice 🔥, and of course, the romance! I’ve always loved Annelise's books and this one was no different - Charmingly swoon worthy!

The way she introduced the MC world was nicely done and the side characters?? I already need their stories ASAP

Can’t wait for the next book! 🙌🏼

This was a really enjoyable read. I loved the H he was obsessed with the h and wanted nothing but to make her happy. He claimed her son as his own snd was all in. I don’t usually like when one of mains already have kids but this worked with the story. I’m looking forward to the next member to fall. I hope she has plans to do full series. I loved the dog too. The Bayou, Bikers, a baby, and blazing heat? Say. Less. Dane, the MC President, is exactly what you want in an insanely over the freaking top possessive man. He sees what he wants and he gets it. Darcy is not in a great place life wise. She’s an incredible mom to her 6 week old son Owen but everything that got her there is a mess. Shes not unfamiliar with the MC life but she’s hesitant when Dane steam rolls into her life claiming her and Owen as his. One of my favorite about all of Annelise’s FMC is that their background, traumas, or even successes do not define them. They are always so much more than they seem on page 1. You also get spice and heat very early on. It’s not forced and it’s so delicious. Annelise never misses in that area trust me. Yes there is insta-lust but Darcy and Dane have an undeniable pull to each other. They have this amazing growth together despite the unconventional beginning. Their love becomes shockingly deep when Darcy accepts it but more over Dane instantly becoming Owen’s Dad ups the hotness factor 1000 percent. Absolutely loved this start to her new MC series and I cannot wait for the next one.

I have loved this author from her debut romance and she has steadily upped her game with every book. Dane and Darcy's story raised the bar even higher! Dane is totally gone for Darcy from the moment he sees her in her pjs. Coming to collect a debt from his ex-friend, he is totally gone for Darcy from the moment she opens the door. When he discovers that she has a baby boy, Owen, that cements her position as his; they both are. Darcy doesn't trust men anymore, she learned that lesson the hard way. Now she is determined to get away from Seth and build a life for her and her baby. Dane is determined to make her his old lady, by hook or by crook. The MC rallies around Darcy and she begins to realize just how much she has with Dane and his brothers. When trouble comes to town, the MC will stop at nothing to protect the woman who has stolen Dane's heart and soul. I loved every minute of this book. In fact, I lingered over every chapter, just soaking up the j/p goodness and the sparks that fly every time these two interact. Absolutely glorious in every way, I need more of this series, asap!!!

swoon worthy possessive man who loves his woman

Dane or Odin is a man who knows what he wants. He is confident, possessive, loving, bull headed. Darcy is an amazing women who has been delt a lot of crap in her life. Once Dane sees Darcy it is a full frontal attack. He needs and wants her. He claims not only her but her son Owen. It’s no longer her child but theirs. It’s an amazing love story between two people. You can tell he loves her at first sight and she does too but has obstacles and old thought patterns to work through. There is only a happily ever after, no cheating.

This book needs more than 5 stars! It was EVERYTHING I wanted in an MC book with a J/P hero. I had a really hard time putting it down! Darcy was seriously struggling as a brand new mom with a toxic family, a failed relationship, and no job. Dane took one look at her and that was it for him; she’s his end game. He overcame her objections, scaled her obstacles, fought her demons, gave her a family, and loved beyond reason. This book was absolute perfection! Dane is the nirvana of book boyfriends (but don’t call him your boyfriend, he doesn’t like that 😂).

Free Falling pulled me in from the very first page. Anelise Devereux delivers a gritty, emotional, and high-stakes ride that had me hooked. The characters are beautifully flawed and real—especially the chemistry between the leads, which crackles off the page. I loved how the story balanced vulnerability with edge, romance with raw emotion. It’s the kind of book that sticks with you long after the last page. If you’re into motorcycle club romances with heart and heat, this one’s a must-read.

I absolutely loved Darcy and Dane. Dane is completely obsessed ans protective of Darcy and her baby from the very start. Their story is a whirlwind with a fast pace and tons of emotion. I love the J/P hero and br33ding k!nk. There were so heartwarming and sweet moments with this unhinged, possessive MC member. Incredible read.

Annelise Devereaux’s Free Falling, the debut novel in her Bayou Dogs MC series, is a low-angst, emotionally rich romance set in Louisiana. The story follows Darcy, a woman rebuilding her life after her husband’s betrayal, who finds unexpected solace and passion with a morally gray, fiercely protective man willing to claim both her and her newborn child. Annelise masterfully blends chemistry with heartfelt character development, creating a narrative that emphasizes emotional intimacy over drama. Free Falling delivers a compelling and tender romance that sets a strong foundation for the series and showcases Devereaux’s talent for capturing raw, redemptive love.

I absolutely devoured this book! Seriously, from the very beginning to the last page, I was hooked. I loved both Dane and Darcy, and of course, little Owen, too! The way Dane was all in from the start with those two and how Darcy didn't just immediately roll over made it even more wonderful. See all those big, strong, tough bikers all smitten and puddle of goo for Owen made me melt. Guess what else made me melt? The freaking spice! Nit only was there great banter, found family, sexy bikers, some suspense, but there was also some k!nky spice that had me overheated!

I actually really enjoyed this, despite MC not really being a trope I ever pick up. I was entertained the entire time, never bored, and breezed through it easily. I read it in only two sittings, despite the few days in between where I took a break. It’s a quick, easy, enjoyable read with minimal drama and likable characters.

Dane was a bit complex. I liked him a lot, loved how he immediately opened his heart to Darcy and Owen, I think it was cute how much he loved them. But he also made me want to smack him across the head sometimes too. I’ll admit, I do enjoy bc tampering, but that doesn’t mean I don’t act annoyed when they do it. But it wasn’t just that, he did bulldoze her on quite a few things, but I think it worked with the story and characters so I didn’t stay annoyed too long.

I did like Darcy, she’s so resilient and strong after going through so much, and I admire how much she was able to take on and keep going. I also loved how she was quick to confront Dane, she didn’t let it slide when he pulled some kind of BS. Though I do wish she stood on business a little harder and didn’t give into his so easily.

The pacing was kind of off to me. I get it’s a fast paced romance, but this book plays out in a time span of less than five months. Them moving quickly wasn’t the issue, I just felt thrown off with how quickly they started to kiss, touch, and show affection, it came out of left field. I thought I accidentally skipped a few chapters when they first kissed because I just didn’t understand how that happened naturally with the context. I got over it fast though and did go on to enjoy the story.

I would easily recommend this if you’re looking for something light, easy to pick up and get through, and entertaining. I’m absolutely going to continue this series and I’m looking forward to reading Band-Aid and Greer’s story.

Book Name/Series: Free Falling (Bayou Dogs MC 1)
Author: Annelise Devereaux
Standalone?: Can be read as a standalone, but includes characters from other books.

3 Stars

My Opinion: Overall, this was a decent read. There were aspects I enjoyed, but the writing style didn’t fully pull me in which unfortunately meant that I wasn’t ever fully invested in the story or the characters unfortunately.

One of the highlights for me was the found family because I really enjoyed seeing how readily Dane’s family and club took Darcy in and treated her and her son like family. However, the true star of the book for me was Gris-Gris the rottweiler. He was just so adorable with how protective he was of baby Owen, and his habit of carrying around the baby blanket completely stole my heart.

Hero: 4/5. Dane starts out as vice president of the Bayou Dogs MC and eventually becomes president. The club mostly runs legal businesses, so there’s very little dark content related to the MC. From the moment he met Darcy and her newborn son Owen, he was all in and determined to make them his. I loved how he immediately embraced Owen as his own, regardless of blood ties, and how sweet he was with both of them. That’s not to say he doesn’t have some red flags though. He was very protective of Darcy, which did make sense considering how he lost his mother. On top of that he was also incredibly possessive, which is something I usually love, but in this case, it bordered the line of being overbearing on a few occasions.
Heroine: 3/5. Darcy grew up in a strict, religious household and was forced to run away to escape an unwanted arranged marriage. She then found herself living and having a child with a deadbeat guy who only really wanted her for money. She came across as quite stubborn and outspoken, but it felt like it was for show if that makes sense. She would for example push back and call out Dane on his more questionable behaviour, like tampering with her birth control, but she would always give in when he said something sweet, which lessened the impact of those moments. I didn’t dislike her, but I wasn’t crazy about her either. However, it was clear that she loved her son and wanted the best for him.

POV: 1st person POV (Darcy and Dane).

Push/Pull:

Sadness: 1/5.

Explicit Sex and Spice Level: Yes. 3/5.

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) Drama: Not really.

Separation:

Cheating: No.

Closure/Ending: HEA.

Possible Triggers:

I don't have many one- click authors... and I hardly ever actually buy an eBook, I stick to kindle unlimited and that's that... I say all this to say..... Ms. Annelise is the only author that I will not only buy her books without any idea what the storyline is, but I will buy them the first day of preorder which usually means there's MONTHS of waiting. She is THAT good! She is THAT WORTH IT! Sometimes after you read a lot of OTT JP characters you find that they all almost stream together. One isn't much different from the next. That can't be said for any of the characters in her books. Right when I think she has checked off all my loves and wrapped them into one MMC, she writes a new story that's completely different and I find I have a new set of check marks I never knew about lol. She has a way of making those glaring red flags appear very much like green flags :) . This story is no different. The other thing I love is her MFC never annoy me, and that's very rare.. The way she can make them strong, and powerful in their own ways while keeping them unjaded is beautiful. Here we have Dane and Darcy... Dane is days away from taking the helm and running the club when he is hit with the love stick. Just like with all Ms. Annelise's Dane is over the top possessive and couldn't give two rats what anyone thinks about it. Darcy is a new mom just trying to wade the crap waters life keeps throwing her into and Dane is determined to not only make her his but prove to her that she and her son are home in his arms and safe. The relationship Dane has with his son is truly Beautiful. I adore how he knew without a doubt from the moment he saw him that he was put on this earth to be this Owen's daddy. This story was a beautiful mixture of love, respect and of course spice. I will say though my favorite relationship in the story was between baby Owen and his best friend. If you love your men OTT JP but you can't do cheating or any of the drama that usually comes with MC books, then please let this be your next read because I promise you will not regret it! Dane would NEVER and if you haven't read any of her other work then I highly suggest you start from the beginning and enjoy the ride that makes you fall for each and every one of these amazing characters!

This was my most anticipated book of the year, and it was better than I could have ever imagined! If I could give more than 5 stars, I would.

Annelise Devereaux writes MMCs like no other author I've come across. If you've read any of her books you know what I'm talking about, and if you haven't, you're missing out and need to read one ASAP.

Free Falling is an MC book without all the OWD you usually get from MC books. It elevates the book in my opinion. In her books the MMC is all about the MFC, Free Falling is no exception.

You have Dane as the MMC, Darcy as the MFC and Owen as the MBC (main baby character. I totally just made that up). There is so much I want to say about this book, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone, so I'm going to be vague. Despite the family Darcy had growing up, she turned out to be an amazing young woman, and an amazing mother. She was sweet, kind, loving, understanding, caring, strong and not afraid to stand up for herself. She was perfect for Dane. One of my favorite things about Dane was how unapologetic he was in the things he did. If he wanted something, he made it happen. He didn't try to down play it or make excuses. He was like 'yup, I told I was going to do it.' Completely unapologetic. I absolutely loved it! This story wouldn't be the amazing story it was without the side characters. Annelise did an amazing job with them, and I hope to read more about them in books to come.

Overall, this book perfection. The pacing, the timing of everything, and just the overall feel of it was spot on. If you're thinking about reading it, take the plunge and do it, you won't be disappointed. As with all of her books, I will be re-reading it often. Annelise, thank you for letting us see into the conversations you have with your characters 😉. Can't wait to read the next one!.
