Playing For Keeps: A Smoking Hot Romance Anthology

Rate this book
An anthology of smoking hot stories from the Playing For Love universe. Laugh and swoon as Eve Dangerfield’s most beloved characters face new challenges, steal lustful moments and plan perfect seductions. Trust is tested, limits are pushed, but one thing remains; everyone’s still playing for keeps.

Begin Again Again. Beth rediscovers her body after the birth of her first child. Amidst the chaos of moving house, she decides to show Byron she’s not just the wife of his dreams but the nanny of his secret fantasies…

Return All. Missing his days dominating the football field, a restless Derek arranges to ‘acquire’ his wife Mara in a fake drug deal gone wrong. The game that follows is darker—and more beautiful—than anything they've explored before.

First and Forever. A near-fatal accident leaves Willow terrified of hurting Eden, even when she wants him to. She whisks ‘Doctor Williams away for a debauched weekend and a reminder of how pleasurable pain can be.

Back Into It. Patrick is determined to give Cheryl the most glamorous wedding on earth. A little too determined. Cheryl breaks out her kitten ears (and tail), hoping she can dial her fiancés ‘Princess Diana-meets-1974-Ceausescu’ vibe down.

Where the Heart Is. Sal Thomas, drag icon and rebellious sister to Byron, collides with former bully Curtis Ingram in a very unexpected place. He begs for a date, but Sal has misgivings. He might be a smoking hot athlete grovelling better than a Bassett Hound… but wouldn’t it be easier just to shut him in a mirrored box and leave him there?

PLAYING FOR KEEPS is the fifth and final novel in Eve Dangerfield’s critically acclaimed Playing For Love series. PFK can be read as a standalone, but starting at the start is recommended.

Eve Dangerfield has loved romance novels ever since she first swiped her grandmother’s paperbacks. Now she writes her own stories about complicated women and gorgeous-but-slightly-tortured men. Her work has been described as 'genre-defying,' and ‘the defibrillator contemporary romance needs right now'. And not just by those who might one day need bone marrow! She lives in Melbourne with her beautiful family and can generally be found making a mess.

5 STARS!!

If you love the characters from the Playing for Love series - like I do - this is a must read.😍😍

It was wonderful to get a peek at their future relationships and indulge in their scorching-hot chemistry once again:

Novella 1: 3.5 STARS Cheryl and Patrick
Novella 2: 5+ STARS for Derek and Mara (holy cow, so intense!)
Novella 3: 4.5 STARS for Byron and Beth
Novella 4: 4 STARS for Willow and Eden
Novella 5: 5 STARS for Sal and Curtis
"We don't get to decide who we fall for."
Gah, these two were such a great new addition to the Playing for Love family. Everything about their story felt so genuine and earnest, with their hopes and fears bleeding from the pages.
"But he knows you're non-binary, yeah? He's trying to understand who you are?"

"So? I'm the first non-WAG he's ever been into, and I just don't know if I'm strong enough to hold this whole thing together while..."

"He figures out if he's strong enough to stand beside you?"
I loved every moment.

is it controversial to say that i actually quite like Eve Dangerfield's comeback book, Begin Again Again? well if it is i don't care!! i loved begin again, again when it had a half-way decent cover, i loved it when it had that… trash scary cover, and i love it now that it has the man with abs cover. i have loved it in all its forms <3 so, long story short, my rating for playing for keeps is mostly for Beth and Byron's novella.

honestly, i wish their novella could have been a sequel cause you guys, wow. there is a lot to unpack here. as usual, Dangerfield served up smut with an actual plot which i love and am greatly appreciative of <3

i'll get around to reading about the rest of the couples … eventually ;)

Much of what you need to know is in the editorial blurb, so I'll stick to what's beneath the surface:

I think it's fair to say that the vaaaast majority of Eve Dangerfield's books are about developing genuine, empathic interest in others, embracing vulnerability and, perhaps most difficult, practicing self-compassion. This collection of short stories ticks all of those boxes. It does so thoughtfully, tenderly, earnestly.

And, yes, it's incredibly sexy.

That said, while the smutty bits are top-notch, they're also character-driven, a means for growth. In each of Playing For Keeps's stories, protagonists are enriching and, in some cases, repairing their relationships, exploring fantasies largely through role play. And even though those fantasies are thrilling and raw, the characters living out those fantasies remain complex, feeling, and very, very human. They revive and explore what is real through situations that are unreal, somehow both self-aware and immersed in their experiences.

There are other through-lines. Most of these protagonists are struggling with emotional and/or sexual insecurity. Even when it's more than apparent that their partner isn't the type of person who would abandon them, even when it's clear their partner is devoted, even after marriage and kids ... anxieties linger, if not outright intensify. After all, there's more to lose. And in the absence of honeymoon-phase love goggles, these characters—like many of us—fear their partners will realize they're not good enough, hot enough, stable enough, game enough, or simply worth the effort.

And this is where the book raises some important questions:

* Will our partners be able to welcome/make space for the changes that arrive with aging, new priorities, new traumas, and (in some cases) parenthood?

* What happens when partners miss the people we used to be?

* What happens when we miss the people we used to be?

* How do we create exhilarating stakes within secure relationships?

* Can blanket supportiveness—a partner's automatic affirmation of everything we feel and are—backfire, cause that partner to stop hearing us and unknowingly dismiss or steamroll our concerns?

Dangerfield also examines:

* The need for balance—the understanding that vulnerability goes both ways, and that there's space within each of us to crave both dominance and submission.

* The mega-blessings that are insightful, non-judgmental friends.

* The vital, game-changing nature of open and honest communication.

* The value of therapy and educated, organized support systems.

I binged the book, but now I wonder what the experience would’ve been like had I given each story room to breathe. I think it would be best to take breaks. And if for some reason you can only read one story from the book, I think Dangerfield's writing is strongest in Begin Again Again (Beth and Willow's story).

_____

If you're interested, here's an audio interview/conversation I had with Dangerfield several months ago. We talk about dark romance (her conscience is a total killjoy), pseudonyms (she has some regrets), vaping (she's fascinated), freak accidents (she's obsessed), sincere self-acceptance (she's a big fan), and much, much more. PLUS—listen throughout for discussion of the kinky age gap, boss/employee leviathan of brilliance that is Act Your Age.

ARC was provided by the author, no quid pro quo. I'm a Dangerfield fan but wouldn't have weighed in if I'd had nothing to say.

What you get:

Postpartum depression
Super hot nanny roleplay
Pet play with a kinky tail
A fancy wedding paid for by her stupid rich hottie fiance
Doctor roleplay with a side of trauma
Marital struggles
Non-binary rep
Domination and exhibitionism

This is an anthology of extra scenes about the characters from the Playing for Love series. You don't strictly have to have read the series previously, although it will be most enjoyable if you do. These little slices of life stand alone and are super spicy little satisfying bites.

This anthology is KINKY! If you're a fan of things like taboo roleplay and pet play, you'll love these shorts. My ears are still steaming 🥴. There's some tough content in there too about things like postpartum depression and the struggles of parenthood and gender identity, but keep reading if you're comfortable with that, and you'll feel content by the end.

This author is absolutely hilarious and it shines through in her writing. In between my panties melting I find myself cackling like a bog witch and I love that for me.

Sexy, spicy, witty, and emotional, this one has it all. Go check it out!

coming home spicy

The fifth book is a combination of the after-HEAs and Sal’s story, and I recommend reading from the beginning if you want a more in-depth look on the characters that rally their HEA. They definitely have a shorter span of the limelight but only because when read in order, it almost feels like they’d been constantly highlighted from different perspectives until a whole person was put together; all they had to do left was sing.

I loved reading this. It was like coming back home with a taste of fear. I’d left them all to their HEAs and was mildly frightened to read the problems that came up- what problems?! But it was a healthy dose of reality; sometimes things just happen but it’s the “what you do about it” that matters most and Eve delivered with her usual hot flare.

Sal’s story was cute and I’m glad they got their own HEA because of how important they were to everyone else. It was also a nice way to introduce a perspective to life that many may not be familiar with; inclusive and a little informative without venturing too far into another kingdom. It was the perfect amount of heart and hot kinky yes fun times.

I was so excited to receive an ARC of this book, Eve Dangerfield is a must read for me, I love everything she’s done and this was no exception.

I recently heard an author discuss not wanting to write follow ups or sequels to their work, because they feel like readers don’t want something new, they just want more of the same, the characters “trapped in amber.” Dangerfield walked this line really well and gave us new stories about familiar characters but also made them fresh, most of these couples are established but they are changing and going through hard stuff and figuring out what their HEA means as they evolve. I thought it all was really beautifully done.

I’ll also say that the way Dangerfield mixes real gut punch emotional themes with truly top tier spice is masterful, at the end of the first story I noted “didn’t think a story that included kitten play would make me cry…” but such is the work of Eve Dangerfield. Go read it now.

4 stars. Playing for Keeps is a short story anthology with the characters of the Playing for Love series. I enjoyed catching back up with the characters from the series and seeing where they are several years down the road. My favorite story was Cheryl and Patrick's. It was sweet, sexy and sentimental. I wanted to see their wedding night, but overall, this was a poignant, enjoyable story. I also enjoyed catching up with Mara and Derrick, Willow and Eden and Beth and Byron. There is also a story for Sal, Byron's sibling who is nonbinary, and Curtis, who is on his pro football team. This was the first romance I have read with an enbie and was fun and sweet. Overall, I was happy to see all the couples doing well and in a good place.

ohhh this book, it was like returning to the house of your best vacation and seeing every moment you enjoyed in each character you meet again.
.
Although it can be read as a stand alone, it’s a beautiful compilation- anthology of what happened to the characters that I loved so much in the series "Playing for love", the first books I read by Eve Dangerfield and they opened a new world to my little romance reader heart
.
It's not the smut/steamy or whatever that’s amazing cheff kiss, it's the depth of the characters and how they carry their scars and dreams on their skin with every decision and with whom they decide to share time and moments.
.
I won't deny that my heart ached for some and I really crossed my fingers wishing for that happy ending, and when the last page arrived I thought "damn, now I need to reread the series especially my favorites.!”
.
So yes, I really liked it and I enjoyed the growth of each character, including the extra story of Sal and Curtis, I needed more pages because I didn't want to leave that world. Beautiful books like Eve Dangerfield only can write

When I read the blurb for this anthology following characters from Eve Dangerfield's Playing for Love series, I was immediately in. I mean, Sal gets a love story, so what more can you ask for? You will want to read the other books in the series before diving in, but that's not a bad thing. More books to read is always a positive.

This is the Ever After part of the Happily Ever After thing, and Eve nailed it. These bite-size stories navigate topics like aging, changing careers, post-partum depression, trauma, and the dilemma of 'who the hell am I?' Oh, and they are spicy af, too, so enjoy.

I can't forget that this is sports romance, either! I don't know a thing about Australian Rules Football, but now I am extra inspired to catch match!

What a lovely opportunity to revisit some beloved, complicated and kinky characters.
Normally, I’m quite sceptical about revisiting characters I’ve previously enjoyed, but this compilation didn’t read like an extended epilogue.
The stories have moved on a few years and the characters are in the midst of life and all its mysteries.
I particularly enjoyed Beth and Byron’s story and also Eden and Willow’s. They’re a kinky bunch, but it’s not all fun and games - between their careers and family life, they’re struggling with issues such as post-partum depression, feeling stuck and fear of loss.
These themes are truly universal and made for short stories with pathos. But fear not - there’s lots of filth too!
I found them entertaining and touching in equal measure.
4/5 for a thumping good read.

Oh, I loved this book!!! Firstly, we get to check in with our four previous couples from the other books in the series. They each have their unique issues that they are dealing with, weddings, babies, accidents, and keeping that spark. Relationships evolve, and they all need to make adjustments, but the heat, spark, fire, and wildness they have for each other, that is still right there, along with all the heart, love, soul-mating, and happy to be togetherness

But we also get Sal’s story 😊 Sal has always been there on the side, in the middle, and barging around. That they get their HEA, and in a totally unexpected manner, was all the fun, craziness, with a touch of angst, that we would expect of them. Loved how it all played out, and that they did get what their heart desired <3

Great anthology, every story visits a couple having an issue and overcoming it. Using ED's signature casual kink.

I don't really get non-binary, I don't understand it, but Sal and Curtis's story has really helped me understand a bit more. Curtis is a himbo and I love them. I love both of them and together. A great extra story which I wasn't expecting.

I wish a gender neutral pronoun existed which was singular because all the theys confused me at first.

This anthology made me cry at parts in every story. But it was such a good read and I got it for free on amazon! Definitely sign up to the authors email list as she wrote it was free and bam I got it and read it immediately. She's also so cool and it's like getting an email from a cool friend who lives on the other side of the world.

Well, another perfect Eve Dangerfield book, like I expected anything else! This is an anthology of stories that take place in the Playing for Love universe with the characters you know and love. Filled with Eve’s signature blend of laugh out loud humor and amazing kinky spice, reading this felt like a spank and a warm hug. I felt several conceivable human emotion. I laughed, I cried, I smiled. I absolutely needed this book, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Thank you so much to Eve for the arc!

Sal deserved a full book OMG

Some stories are definitely too close for comfort but that's the way ED (so sorry 😭) does it.

I'd love to read more of everyday's and life struggles unconventional peeps in Down Under experience. These stories are what's actually selling the romance of it, no matter how dark it gets (okay, it definitely started mattering in this second era).

Treat yourself with kindness and hold others up to the same (Toby, you a$$hole).

And Derek, that's borderline non-con and insensitive, Mara, Jeez speak up! A HUNDRED?!

Back Into It ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Return All ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Begin Again, Again ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First and Forever ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Where the Heart Is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Selfishly, and for my own sanity, I wish that all authors were obligated (and rewarded through me throwing my money at them with unhinged glee) to write epilogue anthologies for their series so that we, the goblin readers, can once again melt like well-fucked goo over the characters we fell in love with initially.
Wouldn’t that be great for everyone all round? To check back in with the MCs and see how they’re doing? Watch as they sort through their post-HEA woes with kinky therapy? Because I really do, and reading Playing for Keeps was fucking spectacular for my mental health (post-birthday month; always a psychological treat), so, like, what’s not to love here?
And to top it off, there’s a brand new story for Sal and Curtis, my enbie/sweater boy babies who I love with my whole fucking heart:

And am now devastated over because I need an epilogue for their epilogue. Or maybe even a full story. And then an epilogue.

Eve Dangerfield wrecking my life one delightfully smut-fuelled emotional fuckfest at a time.

Read this anthology. DO it. But read the series first, it’s a regulation banger.
