This was a solid but unspectacular LitRPG. The focus was on a mixture of action and humour.

The plot was fine. We followed Stone McGracen as he got reincarnated into a fantasy world after he died trying to save a woman getting attacked in a futuristic Earth setting. Stone, a name he picked upon arriving in his new world, was the “Hand” of a long absent Goddess. Not that it did him much good. He ended up a Halfling (basically a Hobbit) in his new world. A world where humans dominated and the other fantasy races suffered discrimination and even enslavement. Stone had to level up to survive!

It was an OK tale. The tone leaned heavy into humour. It worked for me most of the time. The other major aspect of the tale was action. We got a lot of fight scenes. That was my biggest issue with this tale because the action scenes were often pretty dull! The plot was a tad slow moving but hinted at some interesting future developments.

The worldbuilding was pretty standard stuff for LitRPG or indie fantasy. Which means we got a blend of Tolkienian creatures and those you would find in your regular Isekai anime. The worst thing is the fact that the dystopian future Earth we got a glimpse of in the early stages of the story seemed a vastly more interesting place than the generic fantasy world our lead reincarnated into!

Stone was mostly easy enough to root for even if he did irritate me the odd time. He had a lot of hilarious observations and musings but definitely had a few annoying ones. He was decent enough though so it was easy to root for him.

He met a potential romantic interest early and that relationship took an interesting twist. We only got hints of romance though as it promises to be pretty slow burn. Stone also joined an adventuring party. Which turned out to be pretty fun as he got paired with a noble and his three girlfriends! Which made for plenty of humorous moments. I was pleasantly surprised by how all the characters developed as the tale progressed. Even if, like Stone, all the characters could be a bit annoying at time. Guess it was a bit WoT in that regard! Truth is if the gender dynamics irritated you in Wheel of Time you probably want to avoid this book for the same reason. Jackson did something that soured me on him towards the end. We will see if his character can be redeemed or not in the sequel.

A random negative was the fact that I liked the moody cat-girl, Gretchen, a lot better than the actual romantic interest, Ae. Hopefully we get more Gretchen in the sequel!

The magic was fairly interesting as was the hints we got of the Gods in this fantasy world. Stone ended up with a unique class.

All in all this was an OK sort of read. I’ll read the next one and see how I feel about the series after that.

Rating: 3.5 stars.

Audio Note: This was narrated by Brad Derry. He gave an enthusiastic performance, and leaned into the humour, but I did not always totally gel with his character voices. His general narration was good.

Book one

I'll admit that I had problems with this book right from the start. I've dropped it and I won't be finishing it.

Let me tell you what my problems were that made me decide to drop this book before reaching page fifty.

1) Used IRL three times in the first ten pages, and misused it two of those times. I hate this abbreviation about as much as Barny the Purple Dinosaur and Tella-Tubbies.

2) Gets killed, not a big deal. Gets reincarnated, also not a big deal. Is fully grown from the start, big damn deal. He should have had two options, inhabit a recently dead body or start over as a baby. Not a fully grown person.

3) He commented on an increase in the size of his male reproductive organs. This has and always will be extremely childish.

4) He believes that he is the only person in the dungeon, yet he blushes over being naked. Why would you blush? Do you blush every time you take a shower or a piss?

5) Is given soul bound items right from the start. Why? If it is bound to your soul you are stuck with it and can never replace it, even in your next life. I personally wouldn't want to be soul bound to anything but my dog. Good boys should be allowed to stay with you forever.

6) I'm trying to ignore the pond with fish in it in a storage room. Doesn't make sense unless it is a feature of the dungeon and not the temple, but if this is the case why is a woman suddenly chained to the wall right next to the respawn point? This isn't logical at all for any reason. If he found her while searching the dungeon I could see that happening, but not right next to his spawn point.

7) His personality. He goes from being brave while being a human being murdered to screaming like a girl for no real reason.

8) His argument with the chained up giant woman is not only stupid but also childish.

I couldn't take anymore and dropped this and went and got some aspirin for the headache it caused.

.01/10 I actually wish I could give this a negative review but I can't.

Remember this is just my opinion and you don't have to agree. I hope you can read the book and enjoy it. I couldn't.

Unique take on the Lit RPG genre. Fun magic system. Some common threads like sun based magic source, and dungeon delving. first person perspective and the MC is witty and has a talent for using his powers in unusual ways. probably one of my top five lit rpgs. looking forward to reading the rest!

Have you read a book called "Halfwit Halfling" by J.P. Pal? Felt like a good story, but MC was bit ...needlessly eccentric?

Good news! This book is basically an upgrade.

I absolutely hate the system this i a cultivation based litrpg which I'm not fond of why!!!! This really ruined this for me I'm still listening 🎶 but he was handicapped from the beginning he has to say inspect out loud you can only do it a few times a day lame.. you can't do anything without sol ( MANA ) so you have to open meridians
( Chakras ) the mc didn't have any so had to figure out how to open one and its weird 😐 he can't level up without sol he has to eat or suck the sol out of everything and its gross the monsters smell like food to him this is ok but what will he do when he gets out of the dungeon I'm just not feeling how the author chose to do the stats and how you get levels or attribution points it kinda dumb.

It's good

A very interesting world. Some good twists and turns at very interesting magic system. Enough rules that you don't feel cheated, but not so rigid that he doesn't feel magical, but just like science by another means. I'm struggling to think of a way to give you some of the plot without ruining it for you and I don't think I can. It's a quick read. Good read. There was never any point where I was bored. There's never any point where I was waiting for something to happen. Things moved along at a good pace. I think I'll read the second one in the series. Hope this review helps you somewhat. I'm writing it with voice to text so I apologize for any spelling errors

Solara's Mercy is the first book in a series described as being dark LitRPG adventure with any number of bad things in it. Having read it, I don't know if the "dark" label applies. Sure, most other things were present, but for the most part, the story was well written, flowed well too, and told a darned good tale. I'd like to read more in this series.

This story feels like the perfect blend of tabletop chaos and RPG progression. Stone’s constant cycle of “die, learn, try again” is both hilarious and strangely inspiring. The dungeon’s surprises kept me guessing, the monsters were creative, and the loot/skill choices felt meaningful. I loved the vibe, the pacing, and the tone. If you want a LitRPG that doesn’t take itself too seriously but still delivers high stakes and great worldbuilding, grab this book immediately.

Not horrible since i got through it, but also nothing fun/unique in it either. There are 6 characters total in the whole thing with the 1st half being mostly uninteresting MC & some chick that turns into his knife later so 1/2 book being a guy's dumb die, power up, die repeat. Way too much on what this uninteresting system is than what the MC does with his new powers (which is basically nothing... just going through the motions).

Usually, a story that has no reveal does it to heighten immersion. This is more like the author did not finish the world building. Add in terrible plot lines that are incredibly forced, and this is horrifically railroaded.

I really enjoyed this LitRPG. Great characters, well written, the unusual storyline surprisingly worked. I can't wait to read more of the series. It's definitely like playing a game as you read. I found this book for free with no expectations.

I wish I could give half stars. I 100% recognize that this isn't a five star book, but it's better than 4 stars. I like the main character, I'm just not a huge fan of the world. the world building is good but the premise itself is frustrating. I am hoping the world gets better in later books!

Note to self: not doing it for me. The MC is your window through a new world, and this MC is annoying and dumb.

4.5 rounded up.

Stone is killed while trying to rescue a woman in an alley. Since he earned a free reincarnation (an interesting idea, right there) he ends up being dumped in a dungeon, no longer human, but a halfkin.

So, this was a good time. Stone was a fun character to spend time with. The world he found himself in was very different from his own world, so he is an oddity to everyone he meets. It's not just his slang, it's the way he thinks and acts. The author did a good job with showing how much Stone is a fish out of water.

The world isn't fake medieval Europe either. It does have some parallels with typical fantasy world building, like the usual Adventurers Guild, but Stone being so different puts a different twist on it. Also... the planet itself is not like Earth. No spoilers, but that has implications that raised a lot of possibilities for future books.

I enjoyed the action plot and most of the other characters. Most of the characters got enough attention that it made me interested in seeing more of them.

The writing did get a bit rough in places, though was overall smooth and easy to read. By rough I mean the use of colloquialisms that shouldn't be used in a published book. It wasn't enough to throw me out of the book, though. The problem was the humor didn't always land. A jokey interaction at the beginning of the book went on a bit too long.

Will read the next book in the series.
