As a child she was "contrary,"as a young woman she defied convention to choose art over marriage, and as a middle-aged woman she was considered a full-blown eccentric. Listening to her own inner voice, Emily Carr created an art unique to British Columbia.
The community read for this year in Port Townsend is going to be The Forest Lover by Susan Vreeland. I felt that I should read a factual biography before I read a fictional biography of Emily Carr. Braid does a good and fair job of reporting the facts about Carr who was an odd person that led a difficult life in time when women artists were not well thought of.
This was a wonderful book. It reads like a novel. Emily Carr was such an unusual woman and she led a fascinating life. It is so interesting to learn about Canadian artists in addition to her own life.
