Breaking Through the Past

Rate this book
A defenseman who would do anything for his team, on or off the ice, Jansen McKenna thought he was living the dream until his girlfriend left him for the world to see.

He was in his element when he was playing the sport he loved. Outside of it, he drifted. Then he ran into Stephen Forrester. Falling for his ex’s father wasn’t on his radar. Once he got to know him, Jansen didn’t want to let him go.

Stephen knew he should avoid Jansen. Between his troubled relationship with his daughter and his own shortcomings, he thought nothing good could come from spending more time with the hockey star.

If they were going to have a chance at a happily ever after, they’d have to break through their past. Jansen and Stephen would need to put themselves and their relationship first and hope the fallout was worth it.

🖤 The dumbest third-act breakup
🩶 OW drama, ex/girlfriend throws a fit
🤍 Strict roles

Rant coming in… 3… 2… 1…

I am so tired of the trope where MC1 leaves MC2 because they think that’s what’s best for MC2 like MC2 isn’t a freaking adult who deserves to make that choice for themselves. You’re not only ABANDONING THEM, you’re also taking away their autonomy by making a decision FOR THEM. It would be one thing if you made the decision because YOU wanted to, but making it FOR your partner is UN👏ACC👏EPT👏A👏BLE.

I hate a third-act break up, I think they’re necessary only about 5-10% of the time I read them. This might be one of the dumbest breakups I have ever read in a book. I think the biggest reason this third-act breakup is worse than most is because it came after the “I love you” confessions. Typically, it happens before the the characters confess their love, during the groveling and/or when they reunite. When it happens before, I just don’t believe it. You say you love them, but your clearly don’t love them enough not to leave.

I expect this ridiculous of a situation when the ex walks in on the couple in the middle of something and when said ex is just finding out about it for the first time. Like it was a secret. This was totally ridiculous because they had been in a public relationship for a while. Stephen’s daughter literally called him and he just ignored it. It could’ve been avoided if they had those conversations sooner. And why the hell would Stephen and Jansen not talk about how they were going to handle it with her? He posted publicly on his social media before they thought to tell her. Which they don’t owe her, but it’s just the respectful thing to do. Don’t get her permission, but at least inform her. She’s a vapid woman, but that’s honestly the bare minimum Stephen could’ve done as her father.

Now that I’ve gotten that rant out of the way, I can discuss all the other things that were wrong with this book. The concept was there. It could’ve been a nice story, but it was so short and rushed that the relationship had little to no development and was entirely unconvincing. Insta-love is it difficult trope to pull off and this author completely failed to make it believable. The biggest issue was Janssen abandoning Steven at the first trial in their relationship. It’s not impossible for somebody to fall in love that quickly, but I don’t believe for a second it was more than puppy love if they were so quick to abandon each other at the first sign of trouble. This relationship reads like to 16-year-olds not a 27 and 43 year old.

The relationship might have been more believable if we saw more of a buildup. If we saw more of their dates and their friendship developing. Jansen‘s attraction literally came out of nowhere. He just says that he had a dream about Stephen, but it’s not even described in any detail. I also don’t buy that they would immediately search for a new house together. It would make more sense for one of them to move in with the other in their current home first. A house hunt is more epilogue territory. Also, sometimes the writing would make it seem like they had spent more time together, but then clarify that it had only been a couple of days or weeks since the last hangout (which we read about). So not only was there not enough description on page, there wasn’t anything happening off page that was referenced either. And the spice was mediocre, so that didn’t really make up for anything.

I’m glad Stephen finally told off Serilda but I can’t believe he basically told her to his face that he loves Jansen more than her. Even if that’s true, she’s his daughter and that was something he didn’t need to say aloud. He got plenty of other jabs in and brought up a lot of valid points but that felt like he was intentionally trying to hurt her. She’s still your child.

Stephen shouldn’t have been the one coming to Jansen. Jansen abandoned him in his time of need and completely ignored him (broke up with him as far as we know) for over a week. HE (Jansen) should have been the one groveling!

I was going to rate this two stars, but by the end of this review, I feel like I should rate it lower. It wasn’t the worst thing I’ve read, but I just had so many issues with it and thought it was bad, which is disappointing because it had the potential to be good. I saw some bad reviews and I should’ve heeded their warnings. I typically don’t rate books this low because I do enough research before to have a good idea if I’m going to enjoy it or not. I took a chance on this one and it did not pay off.

This is Book 3 of the Espen Jetties series.

Jansen is feeling a little lonely since his ex Serilda dumped him. Omg I have never heard that name before but apparently it’s is a German name that means "armed warrior".

Anyway…

Stephen is Serildas father. Jansen felt instantly comfortable with him when they first met. Even though he’s his ex’s dad, when they randomly bump into each other they make plans to catch up. Stephens a bit lonely too after breaking up with his boyfriend.

Jansen is bored , restless . He hangs out with Stephen more and realises he’s attracted to him. Stephen is intelligent and educated, that really does it for Jansen.

“There was no way I saw desire slipping into Jansen’s gaze. It was a product of my sex-starved imagination. I didn’t actually see him leaning forward, or his eyes dropping to my lips moments before he covered my mouth with his. What. Was. Happening?”

Yes, Jansen takes his shot. Leading to a confused Stephen and a hastily retreating and out of the house Jansen.

They have a conversation and decide to date exclusively. I’m not feeling the chemistry personally. This is so left field. It feels like two lonely people latching onto comfort. I guess not all relationships need that hot sizzling spark of passion..

Plus Serilda. Stephen does not have a close relationship with his daughter , to be honest she seems one dimensionally vain and vapid - obsessed with that celebrity lifestyle.

These two seem to move fast in their relationship, looking at houses. I think I’ve missed them saying I love you to each other but they are definitely in a committed relationship.

Serilda finds out about the two of them and it goes as expected. She lashes out and Stephen decides not to be a doormat anymore and puts her in her place.

Jansen and Stephen find their perfect house and live happily ever after.

The book didn’t do it for me personally. I struggled to get through the plot. I didn’t fall in love with the main characters, Jansen was straight then instantly gay for Stephen, they moved way too fast and the ex-girlfriend/ daughter was your typical villainess.

Gay for you when done right is chef’s kiss but this wasn’t it.

It was good I just felt like it moved a little too fast for me. I love the taboo of ex girlfriends father though. I just felt like they moved too fast from Jansen realizing he's into a man to buying a house together and moving in. Other then that hang up it was really good and they are super cute together.

I was excited for this one, but it was way too instalove for my liking. Jansen went from having not a single inkling that he could be bi to searching for a house to buy with his ex-girlfriend's father in the blink of an eye. The new season of hockey hadn't even started before they were househunting! I'm pretty sure this entire relationship developed over the course of a handful of weeks? It just felt undercooked. I did like how Stephen handled the Serilda situation and it was nice to see some growth from Gisela and her encouraging her daughter to improve her relationship with Stephen though. Also, the beginning of the book read kind of...clunky? I don't know, it's hard to explain, but the prose didn't really flow and it felt more like a rough draft. However, it did become more organic feeling about halfway through so I almost forgot about the rough beginning. I will definitely still read the next instalment of the series because I do like this world and this family of hockey players.

This book was a great addition to the series. Jansen was very likeable, and Stephen was stoic but relatable. Throw in the family drama - Serilda was probably the most unlikeable character I have read in a long time but very relevant to the story. My only gripe would be that the epilogue was only a month after the story finished and I would love to have seen something a bit further into the future.

3.75/5 stars! This is a MM hockey romance with the added taboo element of dating the ex-girlfriend's dad. I liked the steamy scenes and the backdrop of hockey. I did find the chemistry to be too instalove. It didn't feel like there was enough time to build their relationship. Will continue the series.

Jansen & Stephen are so good together. There little hiccup made me tear up. I love when a book can bring all my feelings out. This story was really good and i love seeing past characters and this friend group is so caring for Jansen. Can’t wait to read Knox’s story.

Jansen was living the life. For a while he felt as though he had it all. The hockey he loves, the team who are the best friends a guy could ask for and a best friend who really is fantastic even if, as Jansen's trainer, he sets a tough schedule! But he lost the girl. Not intentionally and not really with any heartbreak. After she left him he realised that she wasn't the one for him, that she was in fact incredibly selfish. What he was now missing was company. It is the off season so his friends are busy with their own lives and yes, he has his daily training but not much else.

Contemplating the grocery store yoghurt selection is not usually a place you expect to meet someone but he does, albeit someone he already knows ~the father of his ex. Stephen was a man that Jansen had always enjoyed spending time with and when Stephen invites him to a baseball game Jansen jumps at the chance. It turns out they are both rather lonely, Stephen's boyfriend having left him for apparently being too boring. Jansen doesn't believe that for. amoment, after all Stephen is Dean of the College, how can he possibly be boring? How can nights snuggled on the settee watching films and documentaries be boring when you can be together and learning. The same applies to the museum and so many other adventures Jansen realises ot only does he want with Stephen but he wants to show the other man he is far from boring.

Jansen wants to show Stephen how much he loves the other man's company. Stephen wants to show Jansen how fantastic it can be to share everything with another man. Together they are going to get very sweaty and steamy and find that they are both on a journey of discovery. Whilst there will be battles to be fought ahead they know that together they can face anything and that `they have very good, supportive friends. I was hooked on this book. It is a little bit of a slow build but in that it is fascinating for as Jansen, I found Stephen far from boring and I loved exploring everything with them both. I had to stay up well past bedtime but I didn't care, this one was too good to let go, something someone might need to occasionally remind Jansen and Stephen!

A fun day’s entertainment, featuring a forbidden situation with a hockey player and the father of his ex-girlfriend. Bi-awakening. It’s told in a rather pedestrian style, not much nuance, and I wished for more angst due to the situation, but, it delivers a pleasant and engaging read.

Jansen’s a pro hockey player, and he’s the kind of guy who wants a forever love and just hasn’t found it.

Stephen’s a dean at a local university, and the father of Jansen’s ex-girlfriend, a bratty entitled supermodel who is pretty much a garbage human being. But her father loves her, which...honestly he enabled her crappy behavior. And ultimately that comes into play. But he’s still a sweet guy and I was rooting for him and Jansen to be happy.

When Jansen and Stephen strike up a friendship after the breakup, it’s surprisingly natural and brings interest and joy to both...and then...they’re both experiencing Feelings. Unexpected, inappropriate, wait...what? Feelings. Juicy! And I loved that they talked about that and decided to give dating a try, like grownups. And if Jansen was comfortable being with a man incredibly quickly, as in, not a single doubt or hesitation, well...I do love an ideal world.

It’s fast-burn, and they move forward exponentially to major commitment moves, and of course things fall apart (with some whiplash-inducing 180s, especially on Jansen’s part...). But ultimately, they fit each other too well to give up, and of course they work it out.

There’s a nice cast of secondary characters, including Jansen’s brother, his teammates, and Stephen’s friend at work, Shannon. I liked them all, but, this is another book/series in which half the hockey team is LGBTQ and/or totally accepting of it. Definitely a book for idealists like me! There wasn’t much hockey either, but, it’s off season, so, more training/working out.

HEA, forbidden/ex’s dad, age gap (not really an issue/focus though), hockey player, college dean. No cheating, no OM action or drama, just these two tripping their way into unexpected love. Recommended when you need relief from too much drama.

My thanks to Gay Romance Reviews for the ARC; this is my free and impartial opinion.

I loved this book. Not only did I enjoy the previous books in this series, I was fascinated with this premise and had to read it. It turned out to be a really sweet romance. I loved both Jansen and Stephen. They both were really good guys. I like that it was a chance re-meeting at the grocery store. Jansen had always liked his ex-girlfriends father and they'd gotten along fine. He'd lost the connection after she dumped him and he was lonely not having someone in his life or nearby family. Stephen and his boyfriend had broken up months before, so he invited Jansen to join him to go to a baseball game and use his spare ticket. He'd not bothered going in a while since his break up, but Jansen looked lonely and he'd always liked Jansen when he'd dated his daughter.

I liked the pacing of their budding relationship. Both were lonely and enjoyed each other's company. There was also bi-awakening on Jansen's part- which is one of my favorite tropes. I liked that they could communicate together- even if they needed a moment to wrap their heads around things. Jansen was a bit inexperienced with relationships and nervous. Stephen had insecurities and thought himself boring. They were opposites but so sweet together.

Stephen's daughter/Jansen's ex, is a pretty crappy person- stuck up, rude, dismissive to people she deemed not worthy, self-centered, and selfish. It hurt my heart that the first time we see her on-page she's meeting Stephen for dinner, which didn't happen often, and spent the whole time talking about herself and had no interest in him.

'Which left me sitting there through dinner, listening to Serilda talk about herself and never once ask a question about my life. More often than not, I hoped one day things would change. That she’d turn to me and ask about my day, or my life. It had yet to happen, but I wasn’t giving up hope.
Until then, I’d listen to my daughter talk about her job, otherwise we never had anything else to discuss and she’d play on her phone.'

Something about it just made me so sad.

It was easy to get hooked to this book. A wonderful romance. 5 stars.

If you're into MM hockey romances with a daring twist, Pushing Through the Past is sure to catch your attention. This bi-awakening story blends an age-gap romance with the taboo intrigue of dating an ex-girlfriend's dad, making it a bold and unique addition to the Epsen Jetties series.

Set during the break before pre-season, there isn’t much on-ice action, but Haven Hadley does a great job keeping the team spirit alive. The camaraderie and support among the team still shine through, adding layers of connection to the hockey world even without game-time drama.

Jansen’s charm and relatable personality made him an easy favourite, while Stephen’s stoic exterior balanced their dynamic beautifully. Their chemistry was undeniable, though it leaned toward instalove. A bit more development might have made their relationship feel more grounded, but the emotional connection was still engaging.

The family drama added tension and stakes, with Serilda standing out as one of the most unlikeable yet necessary characters. Her presence heightened the story's emotional pull and gave the romance more hurdles to overcome.

The steamy scenes delivered, and the story’s backdrop kept things fresh and interesting. My only critique lies with the epilogue, which, set just a month after the events, felt a bit rushed. A glimpse further into their future would have added more closure and satisfaction to their journey.

Overall, Pushing Through the Past offers heat, heart, and drama in a unique package. If you’re a fan of unconventional romances with a splash of team dynamics, this one is worth your time!

4.25 Stars - This was a nice addition to the series that takes place in the off season. Jansen is one of the Jetties who has somewhat recently split from his model girlfriend who was more interested in the next best thing.

Stephen is the ex’s father. When Jansen runs into Stephen, the two begin a friendship enjoying each other’s company that naturally turns into more.

Jansen is a strong character who isn’t afraid of new feelings, especially when they involve Stephen. Stephen, on the other hand, is a bit hesitant not wanting to be an experiment. Thankfully, they don’t wrestle with this for too long before deciding to see where things go. They really seem perfect for each other, but the elephant in the room, aka Stephen’s daughter, eventually must be dealt with.

I didn’t love the lack of communication these guys had at times, as it just seemed to be thrown in to create extra drama. It doesnt last too long though before our guys are back on track. They really did seem to be just what each other needed in a partner which made their relationship more enjoyable.

There isn’t too much hockey in this one, but we get to see some of the other players, and a certain someone really needs to find his significant other. I’m looking forward to seeing this series continue.

Set in the fictional town/city of Espen, this is the third in the Espen Jetties (hockey) series. Jansen McKenna is in his late 20’s, a defenseman for the team, which won the Stanley Cup. He’s also recently been dumped by his supermodel girlfriend. A chance meeting in the grocery store leads to him attending a baseball game with his ex-girlfriend’s father, Stephen Forrester.

Stephen is in his early 40’s, long-divorced from his daughter’s mother, the dean of nearby Espen University. While he’s openly gay, Stephen assumes Jansen is straight. When a live baseball game leads to a meal at a sports bar to watch another game on TV, then to other meals and hanging out, Stephen and Jansen get involved.

There’s much for the couple to deal with – Jansen’s bi-awakening, first time with a male partner, their age gap, different professions, and the fact that Jansen’s ex is Stephen’s daughter! This is a sweet, slow burn romance with just the right amount of heat and spice. I especially enjoyed the scene where Stephen finally lets his daughter know he won’t tolerate her disrespect, and that his relationship with Jansen has nothing to do with her.

I haven’t read the other two books in the series… yet!.

It's the off season, with most of his team mates doing their own thing , dumped by his girlfriend Jansen is lonely and bored. At a loose end he jumps at the chance of doing something different and spending time with someone who is not a team mate is a bonus. The problem is that the person who he is spending time with is his ex's dad.
I felt sorry for Stephen whilst he was confident in his job, his home life was nothing to talk about. Every member of his family treated him terrible, leaving him self doubting himself with everything he did. Having Jansen in his life, even as friends going out was good for him.
The more I read about Serilda, the more I didn't like her. What she did to Jansen was wrong, but the way she treated her dad was unacceptable.
From the moment Jansen started spending time Stephen, I was waiting for the fallout. I enjoyed following them as they started out as friends and progressed to more. When the fallout came I was in shock with how it was done, the support of their friends helped at the times when they were both doubting themselves.
I cannot believe I have not read many books with the ex's dad tropes and I want to read more. As for this series I am really enjoying it and finally Knox will get his story, someone I am looking forward to knowing more about.

This is book three in the Espen Jetties series and features Jansen, the adorably clueless defenseman for the Espen Jetties hockey team and Stephen, his extremely taboo boyfriend. (Shhh, it’s his ex girlfriend’s dad!!)

Jansen had never been attracted to men in. His. LIFE but suddenly, after running into Stephen in the grocery store, he’s seeing things in a whole new light—dreaming of Stephen, kissing and touching Stephen, BEING with Stephen…and, just like that, the loneliness he’d been experiencing was gone.

This was such a sweet book…like, super sweet, not terribly deep, maybe a LITTLE sappy but a good palate cleanser if you’ve been on a heavy or dark reading streak or maybe just in a reading slump. It’s also hockey-light; the majority of the book happened during the offseason and the only on-page game just described their camaraderie on ice so big fans of hockey romance may not feel it’s for them. Personally, I enjoyed it. There was only one hiccup that I could’ve done without but I got my HEA and that’s the most important part. I definitely liked it enough that I’m looking forward to Knox’s book! 4 stars!!

Breaking Through the Past is a heartfelt romance that blends emotional depth, family drama, and steamy moments against the backdrop of hockey. The story follows Jansen and Stephen as they navigate their unexpected relationship, complicated by the taboo of dating an ex-girlfriend's father and unresolved tensions with family. While Stephen’s journey toward self-worth and Jansen’s unwavering support are compelling, some readers found the romance rushed, with the “instalove” dynamic leaving little room for a slow-burning connection. The prose starts clunky but gains fluidity midway, delivering emotional moments that resonate. The family drama, especially Stephen’s confrontation with Serilda and Gisela’s growth, adds depth, though the epilogue’s short time jump feels underwhelming. Despite some pacing and structural critiques, the strong character dynamics and themes of healing and redemption make it a solid addition to the series.

Jansen and Stephen ❤️

4 Stars ⭐️

O, how I adored this relationship 🥰 Two lonely men find each other at the perfect time. Even though this was a slightly taboo-ish pairing, I couldn't have given Stephen's entitled daughter's feelings a second thought, I kinda hated her lol. These two ended up being perfect for each other, the sweetness Jansen show Stephen was so adorable. I appreciated that this awakening wasn't front and center, both characters came to the realization that this was a simmering attraction that couldn't be denied and that was that, they both showed maturity with communication and respect for one another. I adored the relationship build and I adored the fact that the people who mattered didn't blink twice about their relationship ❤️.This read was sweet, spicy and so full of swoony moments. I love this series and I am so excited for Knox, he broke my heart, I cannot wait for him to find his HEA. I absolutely recommend this book.

This is the third book of the series and this is Jansen’s story, it’s off season and shopping for groceries he bumps into his ex girlfriend’s dad Stephen whom he’d always got on well with and who had also recently been dumped they make arrangements to watch a baseball game and decide to socialise more as friends but feelings develop on both sides quickly and confusingly on Jansen’s side because he always believed himself straight but there is just something special about Stephen for him and after a slight bump they go full steam ahead and things move quickly but when his ex girlfriend Serilda turns up at Stephen’s causing trouble, Jansen thinks he needs to step away so Stephen can save his relationship with his daughter but they are both miserable so with a push from each of their friends they talk and sort things out and get their hea. I would have liked an epilogue a bit further into the future but hopefully like the other couples we’ll see them in Knox’s book next.

I have loved all the Jetties books, including this one. I am so happy for Jansen and Stephen. These are two people that needed to find love, no matter who they are.

Jansen is a sweet hockey player that is tired of being alone. He hasn't dated anyone since his ex dumped him awhile ago. He has never seen men in a sexual way until he runs into Stephen. Now, Stephen is all Jansen can think about.

Stephen is an older man that works for Espen University. When he sees Jansen, he realizes that he is a handsome guy but also not gay. After his relationship ended with his ex, he starts to second guess if he is worth love again. Who will see him as more than just a man that is not only smart but also has a whole lot of love to give?

Two men that know what they want..and they want each other. But how will their relationship work and will they finally find love?.

What a delightful read. I have not read books one and two, but after my love for this one, I will for sure go back and read them. And while I know the will make me love this book more, I loved it not having read those first two books. I feel hard for Jansen and Stephen. Jansen's girlfriend left him and he has been in limbo ever since. Never did he expect to have feeling for another guy and much less feelings for his ex's father (Stephen). I love the insta-love of this book because the men made it work. I did not need to know much about them to be all in on their love. I love the sensitivity on how the forbidden them is written and portrayed. What really got my heart however was how they went for it and then had to fight hard to make it work. Love is not easy so their fighting for the relationship was realistically written. A great read and so glad I go exposed to this series. I did receive an ARC and leave this honest review

I was really looking forward to Jansen’s story. The defenseman of the Espen Jetties is now single, recently left by his girlfriend. His mind for the summer is set to training for the upcoming hockey season and hanging out with a couple of his friends and teammates. He definitely didn’t expect to ran in on his ex’s father, Stephen, at the grocery store.
What starts as friendship quickly turns into curiosity about feelings they both never expected to have, lust, sweet moments, dates, steamy moments and, eventually, lots of family drama. It’s a matter of priorities and finally putting yourself first even though it hurts.
Jansen’s bi-awakening felt a bit like it happened over the night but I enjoyed how their relationship developed. I love the age-gap trope!
If you are looking for a sweet, medium angst story with a bit of family drama, supportive friends and a deserved HEA, then Jansen’s and Stephen’s book is for you. “Breaking through the Past” is the 3rd book in the “Espen Jetties” series and can be read as a standalone. Looking forward to Knox’s story now.

Mr. Executive, horrible cake, sloppy seconds, chocolate croissant, Cena di Famiglia, flowers, Quizzo

This is a captivating and entertaining story. It's the third book of the 'Espen Jetties' series by Haven Hadley. Featured are Stephen Forrester, a college dean, and Jansen Mckenna, a Jetties hockey player. An age gap and very different fortes story that's mostly lighthearted. The steam level is high. The imagery is easily envisioned thanks to the author's well-written descriptive verbiage. The characters are all wonderful and extremely likeable. They're either a close family member or wacky teammates. This story is enjoyable, satisfying, and recommended.

Not usually a fan of the ‘ex’s father’ trope, but I really loved how that dynamic was handled in this book. It is definitely a concern of both men, especially Stephen who is reluctant to cause any more family drama, but goodness me the way she treated both him and Jansen was appalling. Both deserved better.

While the story is very insta-lovey and develops quite quickly, especially considering it includes a bi-awakening for Jansen, it’s hard not to root for both men as they navigate family drama, their age gaps and their own insecurities about being in a relationship with each other.

A great addition to the Espen Jetties series.

Thank you to the author and publisher for this ARC. This is the story of Jansen and Stephen. It’s complicated as Jansen dated Stephen’s daughter who is obnoxious. This is the 4th book in the series. I didn’t feel as if I was missing much without having read the others. This could be read as a standalone. I didn’t love the writing style, it felt a bit forced some time with the dialog between the friends. This definitely has an insta love feel to it. I enjoyed the story, Jansen and Stephen had good chemistry. This has the right aunt of spice with lower angst l and insta love vibe. This was a solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️ and 🌶️🌶️.5 for me. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy hockey mm romance.

Stephen and Jansen's story is a must read! These two have been hurt by their past relationships but they are perfect for each other. These two have history as Jans used to date Stephen's daughter but after spending time together as friends they realize that they have a connection and chemistry like nothing before. These two have a lot of love for each other and while they are opposites they are both willing and loving spending time doing something that is "out of the norm" for them. I am so glad that these two got their HEA and I can't wait for Knox's book!.

I really enjoyed Jensen and Stephen’s slightly sappy and crazy sweet romance. Do they get together fast, are they sugar levels of sweet, is there a surprising lack of relationship drama? Maybe, but I loved them together. It was lovely to engage with two characters who embrace being together, want to commit, and then fight for what they have. I also love the world building, it’s so fun how the author connects the series and different sports. The team as family is also very well done, I love how strong the Jetties are as teammates. Loved it!

Firstly let me say I got this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is me leaving my honest review.
Jansen and Stephen make such a great couple. So what if Jansen dated Stephens daughter and had always thought of himself as a straight man, a lot of his friends and brother were either gay or bisexual so when Jansen started to have dreams about Stephen it really opened opened his mind to the possibilities to having more. But would there be fireworks when it all came out??
I really enjoyed Jansen and Stephens relationship they were very passionate and so connected. This is the first book I’ve read from this duo and I’ve got to say I’ll be looking out for the next book in the series.

Great Read

I absolutely adored both Jansen and Stephen. While I thought this would be a hot read I was pleasantly surprised to find it was that and so much more. Both characters had such depth to them that you couldn’t help but take notice. I felt for Stephan at times and he had the patience of a saint when dealing with both mother and daughter. Jansen didn’t have the big freak out about his bi- awakening and I loved that it was more natural.
This is my first book by Hadley but I will definitely be going back to read the first two in the series.
I received an arc via grr and this is my honest opinion.

Breaking Through the Past by Haven Hadley is another fantastic addition to the Espen Jetties series! I love how Haven blends the intensity of sports with deeply emotional and passionate relationships. Jansen and Stephen’s romance is unique, raw, and full of heart, tackling age gaps and complicated pasts with authenticity.

The chemistry between them is off the charts, but what really stood out was their emotional growth and the way they fought for their happiness. If you’re into sports romances with depth and heat, this one’s a winner. Can't wait for more from this series!.
