Fresh out of Grad School, Hayley Monroe gets the chance of a lifetime when her boss gives her the opportunity to produce and host a reality series on finding MMA’s “Next Great Hope”.
Enter former MMA contender Evan Bates. His sudden re-appearance into the sport after a mysterious five year absence not only raises eyebrows, but also temps both in and out of the Octagon.
Can Hayley keep everything in check? Or will she be Knocked Out?
As a child, multi-published author Ty Langston loved to read about dragons and knights so much that one day, her grandmother told her to "just write about them."
So she did.
From that day forward, she never left home without her pen, a notebook, and some kind of music playing in the background. Her love of reading expanded from fantasy into science fiction, and eventually into paranormal and contemporary romance.
She also writes under the pen name of Piper Reece. Ty enjoys spending time with friends and family.
I Love and am 'all in' when it's concerning MMA fighter reads they're one of my top 5 favourite kind of stories, I love a dominant Alpha hero fighting for his woman and even in NA reads I would definitely want to feel some passion, even some arrogant Ass when it comes to our fighters, this one didn't cut it for me, I'm not saying it doesn't have potential I'm just saying maybe I was expecting something else.
So what's it about
Hayley gets the chance to host a show to highlight the new sensational MMA fighter a game show of sorts but she needs some good contenders and works hard to find them.
Evan has been out of the game for 5 years he disappeared and no one knew what happened to him, but he's short of money now working hard on a 9-5 normal job and is trying to get by day by day but he has recently been made redundant and is worried how he's going to keep going. Enter Hayley and her game show and how she wants Evan to be a contender, how he was big back in the day and how this show would help Evan significantly. Hayley wants Evan and Evan is unsure what to do needless to say he makes the wise choice to enter........ There we have it.
Lets rewind a little shall we
There is a reason why Evan left the fighting world and that would be because Evan has a little now 5 year old daughter, his ex-wife is an addict in many ways and hasn't tried to get in touch till recently now she wants to get to know Everly and this is another reason why Evan needs the money he has solicitor and court bills to pay for.
The show is a answer to all his prayers.
My Issues
I think this story had the premise to be a good book, but there was a lot missing for me and yes this is a short story maybe that was my issue but lets break it down:
1. Everly is very mature for her age, I personally felt like she was an adult in a child's body when reading her conversations I just know my kids would never react the way she did.
2. There was minimal romance (this is a contemporary romance book) but there was a few moments together in the last half just not enough for me.
3. This book really was a book on Evans relationship with is daughter rather than getting together wit Hayley, don't get me wrong I'm a mum I love reading families but I need a mix of both for it to work.
4. There was the topic of Everly meeting her real mum and getting a relationship with her, that was not resolved it was talked about but I never knew how that ended.
5. Small grammar issues and saying her instead of him when talking to him etc was irritating for me, I had to reword it myself to understand what they were saying.
6. Saying all this if it was tweaked and a little more work I do think it could be a 4 star read I'm not trying to be nasty or upset the author here at all I'm just explaining my thoughts as a reader.
So sorry to upset anyone that is all
An Advanced reading copy was given via Rock Star PR in exchange for an honest review
Evan is having a hard time as of late. An ex MMA fighter, he gladly walked away when his daughter was born and was severely ill due to withdrawals because her mother couldn't stop the drugs even when she was pregnant!! Years later and Evan is struggling. With bills pilling up, no jobs on the horizon and an ex that just won't go away and suddenly wants custody of their daughter, he doesn't know where to turn. Ruling MMA out, because he doesn't want his daughter to grow up watching him fight, leaves him with little else. A chance encounter with a beautiful woman one night though can completely change your life. Hayley has been handed the opportunity of a lifetime. Asked to produce and host a new competition for MMA's best, she's thrilled! Until she realizes part of her job is to find the fighters herself! Turning to an old friend for help they start scouring the gyms for MMA's 'next great hope'. Not having much luck and with only a handful of fighters worthy enough she is suddenly told of a fighter that could hands down be up for the spot. The only problem? He walked away years ago and is fighting for one night only again!! Can Hayley persuade Evan that he belongs in the Octagon? Together they may just be able to sever ties with the past and start a bright new future.
For me the only reason I gave this book 3 stars was because I really did enjoy what I read but .. and here it goes ... if I hadn't this for me would definitely only be worthy of 2!! SORRY ... It was very short therefore I found the story lacking. You knew the basics so the story would flow but where were the backgrounds? the details? the suspense or you know getting to know each other stage? There was so much more that could have been done with this that didn't have to turn it into a series but could have just added that extra something. A good quick read but sorry not very memorable for me!!
I received a copy ion exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed the storyline and loved Hayley and Evan's chemistry.
Everly was adorable and at times I found it hard to believe she was a 5 year old with just how articulate and observant she was. Edna, Evan's mother, I loved!
Evan truly is a fantastic father, wanting what's best for Everly and doing his damnedest to make her life a good one but sometimes things ding go to plan. He stepped back into the ring to put good on the table and a roof over his head, he entered the contest to secure their future and set themselves up for life. He wasn't expecting the backing he had from everyone and didn't think he'd find someone new to share his life with.
My only bugbear was that it was too short a story so felt rushed to me at times! But overall a quick read with a hot MMA fighter!
This is the first book I've read by this author. Loved it. It's a short read for me at about a hundred pages. I thought the author did a great job of completing the story and it didn't leave me frustrated.
Hayley is on the look out for MMA contenders for a reality series. MMA fighter Evan hasn't fought in five years. Supported by his family he decides to enter!!
I really enjoyed this story. Well written with really lovely characters. I'll be on the look out for more from this author.
** Provided by NetGalley in exchange for an Honest Review. **
My synopsis: Hayley Monroe works for Contact Sports and has been assigned to host and produce a reality competition called "The Next Great Hope". She needs six athletes that can hold their own in skill and talent to stand up against the current MMA title holder. They also need to be able to hold an intelligent conversation and have the looks of a model to draw the female demographics needed. The number of candidates is overwhelming and she's only been given weeks to weed out the talent.
Up until his five-year old daughter, Everly, was born, Evan Bates was a cage fighter. He loved it & was damn good at it. He'd thought that the winnings were creating a nest egg, but learned that his drug-addicted ex-wife had gone through a lot of it. Now that she's clean, she's making demands he can't afford but to not meet them would cost him is daughter and that's not an acceptable outcome. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My thoughts: When Hayley applied for the job, she'd thought she'd only be an assistant to her boss, Ella. But Ella saw the potential and qualifications that Hayley brought to the project and gave her the job of hosting and producing the project. She's turned to Billy, a dear friend in the field, and former MMA Heavyweight Champion Tucker Gray. Evan's financial woes are made even worse when he gets laid off at the mill. He's behind on the mortgage, Everly's school tuition is almost due and now he has to battle his ex in court, again. He's convinced to enter an MMA event at a local bar with the prize of $5000, knowing that once he starts fighting again he'll want to keep at it. At just over 100 pages, this novella is short and sweet. I'd noticed a few grammatical errors, but I'm not sure if the copy I'd received from NetGalley was a final edit, so I'll not detract for it. The characters were all pretty solid and enjoyable. The plot was full for being so short, the pace moved quickly and flowed smoothly. Secondary characters were strong. Dialogue was passable, chemistry was decent. The one sex scene was a bit clumsy and rushed, both in the manner it was portrayed and written. There was a minor conflict that was easily resolved and a natural, predictable ending.
What drew me to this book: Sports romance genre and that cover!
What I Loved: First of all I am sucker for fighter stories, I don’t know what it is about a man that punches and kicks the crap out of the other people that turns me on but there’s something. I love Evan Bates; he’s definitely to your typical MMA fighter, which is what makes this story so good. He’s not just someone that fighting in their blood, but is a hard worker and an amazing fighter. I obviously cannot get enough of Evan’s daughter Everly, she is too cute for words and I love how Evan is around her. Haylay was a great female lead, I loved that she had her shit together, had a professional career and worked hard for what she wanted.
Not So Much: I really wish this story was a little bit longer. I get that it’s a short story or novella (whatever you want to classify this as), but there just wasn’t enough in it. I felt like the plot didn’t really flow nicely because there were just these holes in the story. It was weird to me that Hayley and Evan went from barely talking to each other, to him being kind of asshole to her, then to them having sex. I wish there was more padding in between each of these scenes to it flowed more naturally into the next one. Plus there wasn’t great follow up with certain things either, you meet Evan’s ex-wife Tamara and there is story line there but then it just kind of ends. I wish there was more closure with that, or just a little bit more follow up. I also wish there was more detail about competition Evan was in, like maybe show more than just one fight, or talk about the competition a little bit more.
This was an okay novella. It was the MMA aspect that caught my eye, and I'm particularly interested in short stories at the moment as I have little time to read. However, I kind of expected more and I felt there was a lot more that could have been done with this story.
The first thing I'll say is that I loved Everly and her relationship with Evan (her dad). I'm not usually a fan of kids in books but she was adorable and full of life. I loved that she was so confident and you could feel her love and admiration for her dad. As well as this I liked the devotion to her that Evan showed back. I found their relationship to be believable and well created.
Similarly, I liked the overall concept of the book. The competition aspect intrigued me as I've not seen it done with MMA before. However, this was where my biggest problem was created. There was hardly any detail about the competition and what happened when Evan joined. One minute he was leaving to start it, and the next he was in the final!! I wanted more detail, more fights and more hardship. I wanted to read about his journey but that's not what I got--I felt things were too easy, and there's a lot of potential for a great full-length novel. As it stands for me, the concept feels too big for a novella, because added to that there is a random sex scene thrown in with no warning. It all felt a bit disjointed because of the length and lacked detail.
Overall, it was a quick easy read and Everly was definitely the best part. I would have loved for it to be longer as I feel there is so much more the author could have done, but it's alright to break up the time.
I don’t suppose anyone can tell what drew me to this book before I even read the blurb?
*ding ding ding*
The cover. :)
And we think men are bad. Give me a hot MMA cover and I am all over that book.
Haley has to find some contestants for her new MMA show, Next Great Hope. They search and they search and come up with some contestants, but she keeps looking a little more. That’s how she found Evan. Persistence is the key girls.
Evan had a promising career ahead of him that he stepped back from for a mysterious reason (I’m going with what the blurb said because I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone).
Easy to read, I read through this very quickly, and enjoyed it. I liked both Evan and Haley and most of the characters involved in the story.
The only thing I could have wished for was a resolution between Evan and his ex. I really would like to know what happened with that after his mom intervened besides Evan’s initial reaction. Maybe it’s going to be a series and we’ll find out about that later? The only other thing that bothered me was this sentence, “Dressed in a pair of black sweats and matching tank, she seemed underdressed as Evan wore only a pair of blue running shorts and sneakers.” I think it should be she seemed overdressed, seeing as Evan had on less clothes than she did? It has been nagging at my mind every since I read the book.
I really enjoyed Knocked Out By Ty Langston and Alicia Alpon, in fact the reason I didn't give it a higher rating than 3.5 was not the books fault at all. I've never been a huge fan of shorter novels and novellas and when I started reading it didn't realise just how short this book would be. I love details, love hearing about place, scenes, people, their feelings etc.... Shorter novels for me miss out all these details and that's what made me rating lower.
The story of Hayley and Evan is a great romance, I love how their journey goes and takes them. I love the backing stories, Evan's daughter and the family closeness. Hearing about all the MMA fighters was pretty cool too. But again, this is where the book lacked for me as I'd have liked to hear more details. It could have been a 5 star book if it wasn't so damn short.
Even the ending kinda felt like I came to a cliff top and peaked over the edge but didn't run and jump like it most novels, it just stopped dead and I didn't feel that ending worked for me. Yes all the ends were tied up, but I needed more!!!
If you like a contemporary romance with a hot MMA fighter and a straight talking leading lady, then give this a go - just bare in mind it is a very quick read. 3 stars, but as I said it would have been a lot higher had it been a full length novel.
I received this ARC on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, and an honest one it is. THIS BOOK IS AMAZING. Even though it is way too short for me (I need more of Hayley and Evan!), the book was nice. Obviously, the main topic was about fighting. Professional fighting, and I've always been fascinated by it. So yes, I was totally interested in this book. But then I read about Evan's life, and I'm just there like, "oh you poor baby." HAHA. Tamara is a biatch, full stop. And Everly, she is just way too cute for a five year old! Though the only flaw about this story is that it seemed too rushed. The story line seemed too rushed, like the author wanted to finish it up quickly. Even the sex was LITERALLY fast HAHA. But yeah, I guess what actually mattered to me were the characters and their story, so yes, I really do hope this book has a sequel, because I would really really wanna read more about this two lovebirds. :)
A short story that was an easy read. I've finished it in an evening. There is a good potential to develop into something great and be a page turner but I've been expecting more...
The plot is promising but the author was too superficial in her story. The characters are interesting. Sad that you don't really have time to get to know them. Evans was well written, with some depth and a complicated background story. But Hayley was lacking of substance. If think she could have delivered and added much more to the plot. Their romance (or lust attack) is rushed and not very romantic.
Don't get me wrong, you spend a nice moment. But after reading other books about MMA fighters, I'm missing some adrenaline rush about fights and sensuality in the romance part.
What's not to love about a story featuring a HOT MMA fighter who is a softy when it involves his adorable little girl?
This is not your typical love story. This novella (as mentioned by the author at the end) is more about the love story of the father and daughter as opposed to the hero and heroine. With that said, things do still heat up between Hayley and Evan.
This novella as a wonder book for those that have limited time to read. While this book was an enjoyable book to read on a lazy afternoon, it could have only been better if it was lengthened a bit.
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion*
Holy awesome! I'm a fan of boxing romances. Fighting romances. I love the Alpha fighter. Evan, well, he rocked. He was sexy, cocky but not a dick. Hayley though somewhat innocent, wasn't naive. She was a great soft contrast to the abrasive Evan. I think that this was a great short read. It doesn't drag you down in a bunch of details and really packs a punch in such a short amount of time. That's a good thing. It was a great story. I wonder if the author has thought to put any of the other guys into stories. I'd love to see more. This was a really good read. I would suggest it to anyone who loves a fighting romance!
Short, sweet, and to the point I loved this book. I loved Evan, "she could feel him looking at her. His blue eyes glimmered with devilish intent. "Well, this is a 5 mile run. Think you can hang, pretty girl?" he mocked." He's so sexy and he's the type of man to go after what he wants, "well...you did say for me to relax, baby girl. I have to admit, after getting all of that anger and frustration out, I have this sudden urge to eff you senseless." He told her as she heard him unzipping his pants and heard them hit the floor." I can't wait to see what else this author has to offer.
SERIOUSLY .... How does one NOT love a hot alpha male who is all softy inside for his little girl. Who does not love a romance that involves a hot alpha male who has a little girl?!?!?!? WIN WIN, I tell ya! This was a short read. My first by Ty Langston. It didn't disappoint. I wanted more but the story didn't need more to be good. It was great just how it was! You already know what the story is about from the blurb so I will just tell you that if you want a quick, easy to like read ... this is your novella!
ARC provided by NetGalley & Solo Publishing Co for an honest review.
This 4 star novella was fast and sweet…no real smexy (only one fast #$%&)…But, the story had some good emotion and I believe this would make a great book if the fights were stretched out and the end was actually the end of the Prologue. The real story would come with Evan working his way towards the belt and Hayley learning to be a mother, fighting for her man and blending the TV world with real life. I actually would have loved to see a good ole fashion cat fight between Hayley and Tamara (Evan’s horrible ex). Worth a read! Enjoy!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley for a honest review.
Book is really short for not being a novella.
This book would be a wonderful prequel to Evan and Hailey's relationship. What we get is a story, told in a very fast manner, many fun details, like the reality competition and romance are left out. Not sure why we weren't given more as the concept is a great one that could lead to many more books in the series.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley. This was a short read but packed a lot of punch. I really enjoy books about MMA fighters and this one was much more. Evan is a fighter who walked away to take care of his daughter. Hayley is a producers trying to find the next great fighter. When unfortunate circumstances force Evan back into the cage Hayley knows she needs him for the show. The chemistry and humor in this book make it a must read.
I have to say short and sweet and had potential to be sorta epic. I wanted more plan and simple.
Haley is out of grad school and is now put in charge of a TV show looking for an MMA fighter. Evan used to fight but life happened and he stepped away to take care of his family. now is his second chance. and thats pretty much the whole book.
This was such a sweet, heart-warming, quick story! A former MMA fighter returns to the cage in order to take care of his adorable little girl. He finds what could be love along the way, while constantly worrying about and caring for his daughter and doing the thing he loves. I loved it! I wouldn't mind hearing more about the sexy Evan (hint hint Ms. langston!).
Nice little story, quite predictable. Could tell very early on where it was going and how it would play out. Nothing spectacular, but by no means was it a bad story.
This was a quick sweet read. Evan's struggles were the main focus then the making of the "Next Great Hope." As for the sparks between Hayley and Evan there wasn't much there to grab on to. Their relationship just kind of fell into place. One sex scene -nothing too hot or raunchy. Good ending.
Copy provided by Netgalley Quick very short read. I wish the story was longer. Just when things start to get interesting it ends. The author did give a good glimpse into the characters. The little girl was adorable. The relationship between father and daughter was so sweet.
Things that some will do for a child. But what happen before when Even Bates disappears? Pick up your copy to today to find out what exactly happens! Well written and easy to follow, don't miss out!
This was a very quick read, which is not always a bad thing, but it felt very rushed to me. It starts with Hayley, who is a recent Grad School graduate, who has been given a great opportunity to start the next big reality tv show - involving MMA fighters. It sounded great to me, in terms of a concept. Doing homework to find the top fighters, interviewing them, and then watching as they fight one another down to the last, victorious fighter? Sign me up! Evan, The Enigma, has been out of fighting for about five years, due to becoming the sole caretaker of his daughter, Everly, upon her birth. Everly's mom is or was a drug addict and gold digger, who only thinks about herself and never cared for Everly or Evan.
From there, the story honestly just moves very quickly with Evan losing his non-fighting job, needing to get in a quick fight to make some money - and Hayley being there to see it and know that he is one of the fighters that she needs. She has to track him down, as he does not want to be found very easily, and he's not too convinced he wants to rejoin the fighting world. Evan does become one of the contenders, however, and the story moves quickly with him fighting to stay in until the last fight. There is not much build up for each fight, and Haley and Evan also end up in bed together, which really felt like it came out of nowhere. There was also a moment – literally, a moment – where Everly’s mom makes an appearance, but then nothing really happened after that. If you are looking forward to a quick, fairly predictable read, then this one definitely moves things along very fast.

This book was fabulous! It wasn’t a long book, but it was a powerful story. The lengths Evan Bates went to over five years ago to protect and adore the one that matter most is heart warming and touching.
Haley has her first big job. It wasn’t what she planned but when her boss promoted her within minutes she wanted to shine! She wanted to make her new job as the host of “Next Great Hope” huge. But to make her reality show a hit, she was going to have to find the right talent to fit the bill. He couldn’t just be an MMA fighter. He had to be appealing to the eye and he had have a good connection with the audience. The only problem is that the last spot she had to fill, was proving to be a bit more difficult than she thought it would be. She had no way to get a hold of him and no way to convince him that he was perfect for the spot.
Evan had enough on his plate. He didn’t have time to be concerned with fighting. It was what he loved, but he loved his daughter so much more. He would stop at nothing to allow his daughter to grow up in a loving home surrounded by the people that love her. He wouldn’t go back to fighting. Or would he?
This story was more that a steamy romance. It was the sweet love of a child that threw me right over the edge in this one. I adored her so much! And I adored Evan’s passion and dedication to his child with all my heart.
Though I wish the story would have been longer, I really enjoyed it. I loved the characters and the determination and the passion mixed in the pages. It was a nice read and I really enjoyed it.
Knocked Out is a short novel with sexy steamy scenes.
It shows the power of the parent-child bond. Evan gave up his dream for his little girl and never looked back. He never complained. He did it out of love.
Hayley is a beautiful, feisty and stubborn woman, who is also devoted to her friends and family.
The story was solid and original and the characters are nicely created. However, something didn’t go well.
Like I said the story WAS good. I can easily imagine it as a full-length novel. As a full-length novel, the characters would have been developed and we could see their journey. We would also be able to actually follow the story. I don’t understand why they didn’t give it a go for a full-length. It would have been really beautiful.
The story was too big to be written in just 80 pages. There were fast forwards that were never indicated or explained. When you want to jump some weeks or months, you show it somehow. That did not happen, unfortunately. It was hard for me to follow the timeline; thus making the reading quite frustrating.
In conclusion, the story was too good and too big to be written in just 80 pages. It deserves a full-length novel in order for it to show its beauty. Its very short length limited the story and the characters, while it undermined the story’s quality.
**I received this from NetGalley for my honest review**
I'm sure that there are people out there that would find this book awesome. This one just wasn't for me. Usually I love books about MMA fighters, and also love books about contests or things like that. While this book had both of them, it was lacking in something. I don't know if it was because it was really short, a novella, that the character buildup and plot wasn't enough, or what. I just know that it started out awesome, then all the sudden when super fast. One minute she was looking everywhere for him, the next they were running on the beach together. I didn't feel the chemistry beyond the first time she laid eyes on him. And the 5 year old little girl was way too wise for her years.. My son was in private school when he was five and he didn't talk anything like that, so I can't get behind the "shes in private school" remark. The potential was definitely there in this book, but it needed to be filled out a bit more, with character buildup, with more plot, more stories, more one on one, more reality tv show stories, etc. Maybe a novella fanatic who loves MMA stories would absolutely love this one...but..not for me.
I've already made the suggestion to NetGalley for a display of the amount of pages for each book or a checkbox to say if a book is novel or novella length. They've taken it in advisement and I'm crossing my fingers for an update soon.
The reason I'm telling you this is because overall I'm not a fan of novella's. I usually only enjoy them if they're part of a series (of novels). Therefore unfortunately I didn't really enjoy Knocked Out. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I am able to look past the length, if we at least get a story. This wasn't the case here.
The whole setup seemed interesting, which is why I requested a review copy. But that's all there was to it, an interesting idea that lacked development. While reading this story I felt that two thirds of the story was missing. It jumps from one point to the next. The writing on its own was good and it flowed well, there was just too much lacking for me to like it. This story would have been great if the author would have developed it more and turned it into a full length novel.
