One sentence in the description of the book tells you everything that you need to know about it: "Once again, the Allied high command underestimates the Japanese defenders, plunging Jock and his men into a battle they’re not equipped to win."
Yep. That pretty much sums up the book and the others in this series of alternate-military-history. Once again, Jock and his men are placed in a very bad position that requires the sharp thinking and daring of both leader and grunts. And, of course, the team executes and pulls victory out of the jaws of defeat.
Two and a half-stars rounded up to three. I can feel myself tiring of this series. While there are many good aspects, the overall story line is predictable and relatively linear. What felt fresh in book 1 is now starting to drag. There needs to be more of the unexpected in these stories. The alternate history angle is good, but by this point the Allied war machine has cranked into high-gear and the tide has turned against the out gunned and out equipped Japanese forces.

The 82nd Australian regiment
Now in 1942, in the battle for the Philippines the Australian 81nd regiment let by colonel Dick Molly had now appointed a new Battalion commander named Jock. After a week of fighting against the japs at Port Moresby and now they were being sent back to fight the japs again. The japs were heavily dug in all around the Island and everywhere they go they have to keep an eye out for every thing there is either it is the jap soldiers themselves or booby traps set up. But that wasn’t the worst of it as they were also battling the pacific weather and diseases from mosquitos.
As they were going through the dense jungle they could here gun fire every where along the island. As the 82nd regiment lead by Jock they were ambushed, and picked off losing soldiers and soon losing supplies after every scrimmage the both sides fought. After they reached the command post they had to now get as much men and supplies as they could because they barely had both now had to go up to the top of the mountain where the japs where dug in and had to recapture the air base.
This book was very good and interesting on how The Australian regiments were so low and so beaten up by everything and everyone. I highly recommend this book because if your are interested in WW2 books this is a good one and also ends kinda well I guess so.

Again wonderfully written
Amazing author, fills in all the spaces with just the right words. Great story about the bitter side of World war II. What the historians don't want you to know, what the politicians hide.
The truth, the men and women who died for nothing. Total BS, the war not the book.

Gripping and a acute rendering of the stupidity of war!
Love it! Moves along at a good pace and keeps you glued to the script! Interesting characters, both good and bad, cruelty and compassion, honor and satanic inhumanity. War as it really is, brutal, wasteful, inconclusive, shameful! Well written and brilliant! More!!!!

Excellent example of infantry action
The grunts (ground troops) as usual are the true heroes. They are the ones who go without decent food, clothes and armament and bring victory.

If you like lots of action this is the book for you. This Jock Miles mission is far from being easy street.

Island war
Superb characterization and storyline. A love story as a thread through all the horror. Disease and incompetent generals. MaCarthur a pain.

A truly enjoyable series
