The Blood Duet #2

Writing with Blood

Rate this book
After the events of Painting with Blood, Jane Meyer once again finds herself alone, bound to fight her own battles.

One moment, she had everything. The next, she had nothing at all.

Sergeant James Ambrose spends his days doing his best to move on from the woman who shattered his heart, but that’s proving to be a difficult task when the circumstances bring her back into his life.

Alex Walker is on the run, forced to leave the love of his life behind. A new job opportunity arises, one which he never could have envisioned for himself. A dark and criminal organization wants his skills, and he has no choice but to comply.

When an enemy from Jane’s past comes knocking on her door, neither James nor Alex is there to protect her. Fate never seems to be in Jane’s favor, no matter how badly she tries to fight against it. She knows that if this man gets his hands on her, she is in for a destiny far worse than death.

When both men discover that the woman they love has been taken, they each find themselves in a race against the clock. The question is—who will find her first? James, the best homicide detective in Hunterville… or Alex, the serial killer, who now has a powerful group of skilled soldiers in his corner?

Will they be on time or will Jane have to save herself?

Oh boy, this one was a wild ride!
I loved Painting with Blood, so I was more than excited to read Writing with Blood and it did not disappoint! 🔥🔥
As stated in the trigger warnings, this one is significantly darker than the first one, but that didnt make it any less enjoyable for me. It makes the revenge a lot sweeter 😈
There are also two chapters that I am convinced were written for me and only me (you know which ones, Dolores 👀), so thats nice I guess 🌝

I loved the duology and fully recommend giving it a read, but only if youre into dark DARK romance - think Hunting Adeline kinda dark.

Thank you, Dolores, for providing me with an ARC for this book 💕

The author did NOT hold back with this duology! To think she thought up everything and turned it into this twisted, erotic, dangerous story, is remarkable! The witty banter and foul mouth that Jane has mixed with her dark side balances her out wonderfully. All throughout these books, the author repeats that Jane is a survivor, strong, and unbreakable and that is empowering all on its own.
James and Alex are the perfect angel/devil scenario. James is the ideal good guy with a pure, honest, and sincere heart, whereas Alex is the dark, dangerous bad boy with only a soft spot for one woman and one woman only.
She did a fantastic job with these books and I can’t wait to read more of her work!

Reading Writing with Blood is like the sensation of being engulfed by a tidal wave, where the tumultuous waters relentlessly propel and disorient, occasionally permitting fleeting, invaluable moments of respiration. The underlying uncertainty prevails, oscillating between the prospect of yielding to its forceful undertow and the potential arrival of salvation. I felt like this for Jane and I would hate being a character in Dolores's books.

Continuing the events of Painting with Blood, Jane's path is fraught with trials as she grapples with her past adversaries. The narrative charts a harrowing trajectory, returning her to the depths of her struggles and further complicating matters with the suffering of her cherished companions. The meticulous description of traumas compounds, each layer intricately detailed, shattering any glimmers of respite much like a jarring impact.

I truly think this book is very well written in terms of its pacing, character development, and plot intricacies. Notably, perspectives belonging to both Alex and James persist, ensuring a gratifying experience for devotees of either protagonist—whether aligned with Alex's darker inclinations or drawn to James's virtuous demeanor. Even I, team Alex, started to question my allegiance. A notable feature lies in the seamless integration of sensual elements, an achievement undoubtedly stemming from the profound characterization and narrative depth aka the smut is on point!

Initially, my intention was to delineate parallels between this series and other literary and cinematic creations that my mind assimilates, a bid to entice your exploration. However, perhaps the more prudent approach is to afford you the pleasure of personal discovery ;)

This book, this duology, is a gem! I hope Dolores will stay in the dark romance genre and continue to delight us.

TLDR;
- DARK, like dark dark romance
- badass FMC
- killer MMC 1
- detective MMC 2
- fast paced
- kinky as hell
- revenge
- soulmates

“Anyone who doesn’t like dogs is not dating material.”
“You fvcked up my life. Now I’m going to fvck up yours.”
“I’m safe. And technically, I’m free. So why does it feel like I’m locked in a prison.”
“I am not helpless. I am fvcking lethal.”
“Words can be broken. So can bones.”

I don’t know where to start or what to say. Once again, I’m speechless! This book was amazing—an emotional wild ride that kept me hooked. I literally couldn’t put it down and devoured it in a heartbeat.

The book picks up right where Book 1 ends. The storyline was once again full of action and there was a lot happening. This book was darker compared to the first book, but with the darkness and heaviness there were also some really sweet and funny moments.

Jane continued to be an amazing FMC. She was strong and fierce no matter what happened to her. And I really liked Rose as a character. The friendship between her and Jane was great, and I loved how they were able to help each other in a difficult situation..

Even though Alex is my favorite, I enjoyed James too, and really liked his redemption arc. I loved how all the main characters got the endings they deserved.

And the spice was, once again, spicing 🔥

Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5
Spicy content 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶/5

I received this book as an ARC and I absolutely adore this book!

This book is a very intense read, it delves into a lot of pain and resilience.
Jane's journey in this book is filled with immense suffering, torture and trauma and it is depicted with such a raw authenticity and she is such a strong character that I couldn't help but want to see what she does next.
Her development from being deeply vulnerable to becoming a formidable strong women. I loved every second of her rage and strength.

This book does explore themes of endurance and personal transformation and does so elegantly, with some hot a steamy spice in there as well!
Then we have James, I am so happy that he gets his HEA it just may not be the way that you think. It is a welcome contrast that balances the book's more harrowing elements. His HEA is well deserved and adds a layer of emotions to this book!

As I said at the start of this review this is a heavy book so it is important to read the trigger warnings as this is filled with graphic and distressing content that some may find triggering. Your mental health matters.

But despite the difficult subjects in this book, it is a profound read and I loved every second of it because I felt like it reflected both the darkest and most resilient aspects of Janes experiences.

“I deserve to be someone’s first choice”
This quote is one that sums it up for these books. The deepest part of your soul that picks someone and we all deserve to find that person who chooses us first and foremost! 💖

Book 2 is deeper and darker than the first one! You will need to read the first book before starting the second. Please check the TWs before you read, like the first book. I compared book 1 to jumping in the deep end of the pool… book 2 is like going over the edge of an infinity pool so you better have a life jacket 🛟

Months after book 1’s cliffhanger, Alex is off living away from Jane and trying to stay under the radar. James is struggling to return to the charmer he was before Jane ripped out his heart. And Jane, well she’s trying to keep her distance from Bill, who is playing a cat & mouse game with her. You’ll have to read what happens to each of them in Writing with Blood!🩸

Thank you to the author, Dolores Lane, for the opportunity to read this book. I received an epub for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Wow! I was fortunate enough to BETA read this for Dolores and I have to say this woman is so fucking talented.
This is book 2 in the Blood duet and let me tell you this one considerable darker in comparison to book one. So PLEASE CHECK THE TRIGGERS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE BOOK. I read a lot of dark romance so I am used to everything and very few things surprises me anymore. But with this book I had to take breaks after each hard scene to decompress, I’ve only done that with 2 books in my life and this book was one of them.
Amaizing plot, it picks up right after book one ends. I read book one almost 3 weeks ago and it was so easy to pick this one up and continue the story. Dolores writing is consistent throughout her books and her writing technique is beautifully detailed. You get sucked into the story and what you are left with is complete adoration for her craft and work.
The journey her MC’s go through is astounding, what goes through Dolores’s mind? I will never know but damn! I want to read every word.
The plot flows and she gives each character their own unique HEA. But in order to get to the “creamy filling” you almost break your teeth with the outer shell 🤣 I can’t describe it better.
Give this book a shot if you haven’t already
💯 recommend

Once again Dolores reached through your chest and rips your heart repeatedly with this story.

She ensures that devastation station is not just a temporary stop but a destination. However you will enjoy the ride there.

Heart-filled heartbreak bloodshed tears shed laughter suspense is just a taste of what you will get with the 2nd half of this story

Got this one as an ARC and again... I'm a pos. But I finally made it through and here we are! This was so much darker than the first book! The amount of shit Jane has gone through, she has become a MFin beast! My emotions were all over the place the entire time. I do wish we got a little more of Alex's dark side in this one but it all makes sense and the flow and pace was perfect. I love all of the characters in this series and am so happy with the way everything wrapped up at the end. One issue I have is this almost seemed like a Haunting/ Hunting copy.

Painting with Blood (book 1): Out now!
Writing with Blood (book 2): Out August 28th

Tropes
~ DARK Romantic Thriller
~ Serial killer x homicide detective
~ Touch her & die (slowly & painfully)
~ Multiple (3) POV’s
~ Age gap
~ Love triangle

“Turn your pain into power, little killer.”

Book 1: Sweet and kind Jane is a famous artist that has escaped England to come to the states. She eventually meets the equally sweet homicide detective, James. Their love story seems too easy...until karma is a bitch. When tragedy once again strikes Jane, Alex steps in to help her recover, just....not in the typical way. Why, you ask? Oh, because he’s a serial killer ◡̈ Now what on earth could go wrong when her boyfriend is a homicide detective and her bestie is a serial killer?! Falling in love with both of them would be horrible...right?
When I tell you this had me sitting on the edge until the VERY end! I’m so glad I was able to get the arc for book two or I would have been so pissed to wait.

Book 2: After the dramatic ending of book one, Jane has to somehow manage to move on with her life, without either man she loves. Alex is on the run and James is still heartbroken. Quickly, Jane comes to realize her demons she left in England are now back with her in Florida. After Jane gets kidnapped, will she ever be found? Will Alex risk coming out of hiding and being caught to save her? Is James able to track her before Alex? All that being said, I promise everyone gets their happy ending, it just takes some time to get there ◡̈

Overall, these books are slightlyyy longer than I typically read, but it made sense since they have multiple POV’s. I really enjoyed that it wasn’t the typical cop/serial killer romance; it definitely had an added layer that I wasn’t expecting. I’m not usually a fan of love triangles, but this was definitely different from the typical love triangles I have read in the past; I could have sided with either fella throughout the entire duet. I’m so glad everyone got their happy ending. Dolores, thank you for the advanced copy of book two and making me fall in love with yet another fictional serial killer–will be sending you my therapy bill!!!!
*Pleaseeee be sure to check trigger warnings before reading these! There is on page murder and sexual assault. If you choose to read these, please take care of yourself after <3

what an ending

Well Dolores you’ve truly knocked it out of the park. Brilliant second book and what a wild ride. You broke my heart and made me cry, and then healed it again. I’m not ready to let go of these characters so i will be ordering the paper backs of these wonderful books so I can keep them forever. I love James and Alex equally but I truly love Jane. What a woman and a badass at that. And the spice!!! If you love spice and dark romance this is one for you!!!
I cannot wait to see more wonderful characters that you will create, you are one of my favourite authors and you deserve the world. I encourage everyone again to read this duet.

“I am not helpless. I am fucking lethal.”

“I guess I’m just praying to her. Because she is my God. She is the only religion I’ve ever believed in. My universe. My everything.”

“She’s the kind of woman you’d burn down the world for. And I did. Or, well, if you want to be technical about it, the woman I killed over fifty―and counting―men for. And I’ll keep killing for her. I’ll never stop.”

“Turn your pain into power, little killer.”

Hi I’m Codie and this book completely ruined other books for me. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME DOLORES?!

I fell so hard for these characters. Not even the main charecters. All of the side characters are written so beautifully. Well minus the bad guys— but they’re meant to be written as such.

I seriously can’t recommend this duet enough. The banter, the tension, the fighting for your life, just EVERYTHING.

Jane is a woman who I look up to and aspire to be. Everything she went through would DESTROY a normal person. She came out even stronger in Writing with Blood than the first book! Her growth, her strength, her ability to hang on to sanity when anyone else would crack and dissolve into nothing is truly astonishing. If you want a strong, bossy brat (in a good way) of a woman as a FMC, this book is for YOU.

Alex. Alex. Alex. Or should I say Jeffrey Stevenson? No let’s just stick with Alex. Oh I loved how he was still a sick and twisted man who only worships one God, Jane. She is his sole purpose of survival. His light in the sea of darkness. His little killer. I must truly be a psycho too because he’s my favorite man. Yeah yeah, he’s a serial killer, but hey he kills the people who deserve worse than being six foot under.

James. How I really wanted to root for you but man I’m sorry. But I am so happy you did get a good ending. How James healed in the end was the perfect conclusion to his story.

This book is long, but so well paced. Character development is perfect—beyond perfect. Throughout the book I was even questioning which man was meant for Jane but silly ole me. We all know who she belongs to. I love when an author can make me want a female character to have the both of best worlds—a dark twisted and chaotic man or a morally virtuous good man.

READ IF YOU LOVE:
🥀 baddie FMC
🥀 serial killer MMC (1)
🥀 detective MMC (2)
🥀 revenge
🥀 fast paced
🥀 Dexter // Butcher & Blackbird vibes but DARKER
🥀 possible 3 love interests?!

Side note: Can Christopher Hughes get a book please! A little spin off. Idk why but I’d LOVE to know more about him and how he fell for his wife. He’s giving quiet but I’ll kill you with my pinky toe vibes. 👀

I can’t thank you enough Dolores Lane and her team for choosing me to ARC read this duet. Painting with Blood was my first ever ARC read and you really set the bar high. Not only with one book, but two! I adore you as a writer and can’t wait to see what life has in store for you! Hopefully many more books that I’ll gladly buy to support you and your dream! ❤️‍🔥

After reading Painting With Blood, I couldn’t wait to read this book and find out what happens!
This instalment is darker than the first and contains a lot more graphic scenes of abuse and torture, so definitely not for the faint of heart.
But with this we get a deeper understanding of the suffering and torment that Jane has endured. I think most women can relate to suffering at the hands of a man to some degree and I think Jane is an inspirational and refreshing character. She didn’t let the men who’d hurt her, break her. She was the epitome of a fighter and a ballsy foul mouthed one at that!

I did find myself reading the first part so quickly because a part of me just couldn’t wait for Jane and Alex to reunite - I had been anticipating it since the end of Painting With Blood!
To me, Jane and Alex’s love was just everything.

I’ve always been a sucker for a story about love, especially the soul mate type.
This duet is that - on steroids, injected against your will type of sh*t. It’s adult, dark and no holds barred. Something I wasn’t expecting, but realised it was what I had been missing from books, all this time.
For me, Alex and Jane = utter perfection. I think I will be hard pressed to find a fictional couple that beats them and I know I’m going to be thinking about them for weeks and months to come.

This book was a complete rollercoaster. I cried at one point and at other times had the biggest smile on my face.
It takes a really brilliant author to be able to make you feel so many emotions at one time. Honestly one of the best series I have read, ever!
If you’re like me and dark romance is your thing, READ this and thank me later!

This brought out many emotions.

First off, I hate Bill with a burning pain.

I think this might be the series of the year for me. I cried so much with this book feeling so much empathy to Rose and Jane. As a woman it's hard out here and having one another is beautiful.

I'm so glad James got his happy ending. He deserved it.

Ahhh Alex. He is amazing 🥹

Fav quote:

"I don’t believe in some made-up man in the sky overlooking every human being on Earth, no. Someone who lets bad things happen to good people. I don’t pray to any celestial being who would let you, my beautiful little killer, go through hell, over and over again. No, I don’t believe in that god.”

“You are my god. You are the goddess I’ll spend my entire life worshipping. You are my everything, Jane Elizabeth Meyer.”

And this

"If a girl smiles when your hands are locked around her neck, you’re not the one in control―she is. She’s got me wrapped around her little finger, getting me exactly where she wants me. She wants me."

Book Rating : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

I received this as an ARC and boy oh boy was I stoked! I waited patiently *not so patiently* for this second book because I honestly couldn’t get enough.

Please be aware this book touches on some very heavy topics and describes heavy scenes so please do your research and check the TW in advance before diving into this book.

This tickled my dark romance itch so damn good! I have no words other than OMFG Dolores look what you’ve made! This story and these characters will literally stay with me, running around my brain somewhere. Jane is such a strong character and going through what she went through only proves how resilient she truly is. Her evolution through these two books witnessing her trauma and suffering is extremely powerful and felt real.

Dolores did a fantastic job intertwining such a thrilling storyline with characters you could literally obsess over and literally have you sitting on the edge of your bed screaming what the frick.

I’m so grateful I got to read this duet and loved every minute of it. None of my words could do this book justice of how well written and thought out everything was.

Don’t forget please do your research and check the TW as this book in particular delves into a lot of dark topics and dark scenes that may be a trigger to you. Do don’t take this lightly it is definitely a dark romance emphasising on the dark!

Thank you again Dolores for this opportunity and I can’t wait to read more ☺️

Happy reading xx

I can’t believe it’s over! This duet controlled my life for the last couple weeks and threw me around like a rollercoaster!

I loved how it picked up right where it left off. I missed Alex so much and I was a little mad that Jane was mad at him…he had to go!! But James was so sweet, too bad it wasn’t a Why Choose *wink*
But I love the ending for James; Rose is perfect and perfect for him so I am thankful he let go of Jane in the end.

Poor Jane though! I know she’s a badass and she is strong as fuck, but the shit she went through, like holy crap! Bill deserves nothing less than torture and death, what a creep. The way Alex is so proud of her and she takes control of her pain. I just loved the story and the twists and turns. And steamy as helllll… the dirty talk is off the charts, no one writes spice like Dolores Lane 🖤
It is definitely more graphic than the first so watch those triggers.

Make sure to check your trigger warnings!

This book is even darker and more delicious than book one! Didn’t know it was possible.

James and Alex are the perfect red flag/green flag guys. James is the good guy with a honest and sincere heart. Alex is the dark, dangerous bad boy with only a soft spot for one woman and one woman only. And you can’t help but love them both! At every turn of the page you change which team you are on.

And out FMC!!! 👏👏👏 The development of Jane over these two books was brilliant. She is witty, foul mouthed, and a bit of darkness to her too! And the banter… I love me some good banter.

Can you get whiplash from a book? Because this one had my head spinning! Jane is trying to accept that Alex is gone all while dealing with threats from Bill. James steps in as her protector, and things go south from there!

Writing with Blood threw me through the emotional gauntlet. I laughed, I cried, I gasped for air... And I cheered Jane on as she clawed her way out of hell and into a darkness of her own design.

This story even has a Happily Ever After for those who matter. Dolores Lane didn't make it easy for any of them, but they fought for it and made it work.

Words of warning, just in case: check out the trigger warnings and read responsibly. The trauma in this one is real and raw, and the romance is as well.

5🌟 and 5🌶️.

When I read Painting with Blood, I fell in love with Jane, James, and Alex’s story. I am a big fan of murder and dark romance books, and this duet surpassed all my expectations, especially the second book.
The plot is perfectly structured, and the drama that unfolds made me binge-read this book (20% to completion in one evening).

James’s arc is beautiful, and the way Jane grows into this amazing badass is extraordinary. Alex…I mean, he is a serial killer, but he is also a dream. I would have ignored all the red flags, too.
I loved Rose; I was so glad Jane could find a friend who was like a sister.

The spicy scenes are perfect. PERFECT.
I can’t recommend this book enough if you are okay with the TW (there’s some tough shit to read) and love serial killer stories and dark romance.

Dolores is now one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait to read her other work.

These are multiple POV books where we see the POVs of Jane whose a professional painter, James whose a homocide Detective and Alex whose a composite sketch artist with an interesting hobby 🔪
~
The characters, although intricate were all written so so well keeping you constantly engaged with their development as you went through the books.
~
I enjoyed how one second I was team James and the next I was team Alex - The love triangle between the MCs was done beautifully!
~
I adored the FMC and thought her character development over the two books was phenomenal, her growth with the help of the MMCs was *chefs kiss*

Now let me tell you the spice was OFF the charts! The dirty talking, the vivid writing 🫠🥵- I LOVED IT!

Yes, so I finished in a day…. I have to say I really wanted to know how it ended with all the 3 characters…. . The book is high pace with a nice storyline wich made it more then some spicy read.

But tbh the amount of bad mouthing during the 🌶️ scenes were sometimes what to much for me…. For me it didnt needed that much….
It felt like it was more then in the 1st book, but lets say thats taste ….
Also I was wondering how much a person can take a beating in someones life and still get up…. Life can does throw some shitty curveballs…

Anyway I really got invested in the main character and did felt her troubles all the way ! So much that a tear dropped somewhere at the end…
I really enjoyed the book and if you like some good detective work , murder and spice this is a book for you!

In this sequel we see what comes next for Jane, James, and Alex. Their next chapter is darker and more twisted than ever. Jane is still torn between two men she cares deeply for, but in the face of danger she knows what she truly wants from life
This dark romance is very steamy, has graphic language and can be triggering for some. Please read trigger warnings before reading.
I enjoyed getting to know these characters and saw huge development in them and the writing style in this sequel. This book was a bit intense for me, but I was invested in the characters and genuinely curious about how their lives would play out. I am excited to see how Dolores Lane’s writing continues to evolve!

Along with the dark, you get sadness, family, and loss, and just when you think it can't turn around, you get the happily ever after!

If you haven't already, run bow and get book 1 - Painting with Blood, and while you're at it, get Writing in blood because you WILL WANT & NEED IT in your life!

I was sent an arc copy for an honest review.

Oh. My. God.

I LOVED this book ! I really enjoyed the first but this ??? This was exquisite.

Everything was perfection. The characters, the plot, the setting, the WRITING !

I absolutely love Jane and I am so happy with how it ended (I’d love to say more but I don’t want to spoil it). My heart broke for her throughout but it was quickly pieced back together at the end.

If you like a fast paced, gripping dark romance, you will love this ! I truly loved this book.

ARC Review

After the way Painting With Blood ended, I couldn’t wait to dive into Writing With Blood! Dolores Lane continued to surprise me in this duet with her fantastic storyline! It is darker than book one and it's twisted and it sent me on such an emotional ride. While James is such a good guy, and I have a soft spot for him, I was always routing for Jane and Alex. Jane is such a strong woman for all that she is put through, and Alex gives her everything she needs.

Check the trigger warnings, but if you like dark romance, multiple POVs, homicide detective, criminal organization, kidnapping, revenge, lots of gore, burn the world down type books then go read this duet!!

If you’re a dark romance lover read this duet now!! After the ending of the first book I needed the second book immediately. This book did not disappoint. Dolores really puts us through the wringer and we end up feeling everything emotion from happy to destroyed to holy hell that was a hot scene and everything in between.

Alex is my man and I loved him so much more this time round. He is my dream book boyfriend. I really like how this story progresses and how it all ends. We aren’t left with any questions by the end and all the characters we want to see what happens to we get to. I really loved the bonus chapter in this as well. Holy hell it was hot 🥵🥵

This book is even darker than the first, but with the sweet and comedy moments it definitely balanced it out!
Oh and the spice! How could I forget that! Fantastic!
James~ Good guy, so honest and genuine. ♥️
Alex~ bad guy! Dark, twisted, but has eyes for one woman only. 🖤
Why do I love the, both!
Jane~ witty banter, foul mouthed mixed with her dark side.
This book did not disappoint! Couldn’t get enough of it! I didn’t want to put it down for a second!

Brilliant!
Worth the read!
Once again Dolores thank you so much for the opportunity! 🖤♥️
