Nice to see Wiccan included after Agatha All Along concluded. This issue does a good job of highlighting how powerful Wanda's new protégé is by having her, Speed, and Wiccan trapped in their own personal hell. Next issue is sure to be interesting.

This story begins en media res. For some reason, Wanda is already traveling with her new sidekick she picked up last issue, Amaranth, along with Wiccan and Speed. This is only about the third time Speed has ever been in the same room as a --living-- Wanda, but we're glossing over that. Both twins are still casually referring to Wanda as "Mom," even as Wiccan briefly explains to Amaranth the one-sentence summary of how he and Speed are the reincarnations of Wanda's children. (Again, this has never ACTUALLY been confirmed by anyone; Wiccan and Speed speculated about this shortly before Avengers: The Children's Crusade, and all the characters just started acting like this was a fact without doing any sort of investigation.)

This odd group of people are hanging out in New Salem, a magical dimension for witches. (And non-witch Speed, for some reason.)

Back in the original run of Young Avengers, Billy explained that he wasn't going to use the word "warlock" to describe himself because it comes from an old word meaning "oath breaker." He described it as not a nice word. Technically, the two times the word "warlock" came up in this comic, there is no reason why the character couldn't have meant it as "evil witch." Billy makes a comment to Amaranth about witch or warlock alike. I suppose that could be how he meant it. But, then the word "warlock" was casually thrown around toward the end of the issue, and once again, it really sounds like the speaker was just trying to use witch and warlock alike in the same way as one would say man or woman alike. It felt gendered, even though there was nothing explicitly saying that the speaker was referring to gender.

In short, I think the writer never bothered to read the original run of Young Avengers, and the writer really thinks that "warlock" is just the word for a male witch.

The staggering lack of attention to the characters' actual history continues to boggle my mind.

Billy and Wanda have only interacted about 6 or 7 times at this point. Wanda did NOT raise him, at least not since she manifested him as an infant and he looked to be around toddler age when he "died." Billy spent his entire life being raised by Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Rebecca Kaplan. He has siblings by way of those parents, too. He never met either Wanda or Tommy until he was around age 16, and had no reason to think of either of them as family until he came up with this --unconfirmed-- theory in Avengers: The Children's Crusade, that he and Tommy are resurrected versions of those twin boys.

Wanda never taught him anything about magic. Billy and Tommy have NEVER had any kind of heart-to-heart moment acknowledging the Vision as any kind of father to them. They have hardly spoken to the Vision at all since Avengers: The Children's Crusade. He was present for Wiccan and Hulkling's wedding, but Vision and Wanda were both just shown in the background. They didn't speak to either boy, that we know of.

Wanda has had even less contact with Tommy. They had one conversation in The Children's Crusade, and one conversation in The Trial of Magneto. Wanda has never hung out with Tommy casually. The audience has never seen Tommy's actual birth mother, and we only learned that she's a divorcee from New Jersey recently, from Quicksilver, earlier this year.

It makes no sense why Tommy or Billy would call this strange woman "Mom," when they already have mothers. They barely know this woman. So, it doesn't make sense that they would drop everything and hang out with this strange lady in the red cape, especially given how Billy is married to a space emperor, and presumably has duties he should be attending to. Why would they drop everything for this strange lady in the red cape? Why would they feel any kind of obligation to her? She didn't give birth to them, raise them, or even donate eggs for their conception. She is, at MOST, their "spiritual" mother. And even that has never actually been confirmed.

This issue actually tries to address one of Wiccan's few weaknesses. Back in the Civil War event, we learned that Wiccan's powers are limited by his ability to hear his own voice, speaking his intention aloud. This weakness hasn't really come up since. But, hey, at least this issue finally acknowledged that. It tried to say he had grown beyond that limitation, but at least it acknowledged that the limitation existed. That's progress, of a sort.

Next, can we address the fact that Wiccan has never actually learned a real spell in his life? That his power is just innate reality warping, and it has nothing to do with spells?

Never experiencing the setting of New Salem it was a great setting to be introduced and something that never knew existed in the marvel comics. A great world building element. However how Wanda got there with her new apprentice and her children I don’t know and who knows. After reading the previous issue, it seems jarring and a missed opportunity to build relationships between Wiccan and Speed. But the highlight was actually seeing Wanda fight an equal for how little it lasted and seeing her use different techniques and tactics rather than just using one ability. It shows actually strategy that made the issue fun to read through.
