THE FINAL CURTAIN! Dazzler hits center stage in New York City - and the mastermind behind all of the attacks on her concerts is finally revealed! Action, heartbreak, surprise guests and one heck of a light show!
This has been a really frustrating series. I've always thought of mutants as a fairly flawed allegory for marginalised groups, but this series went all-in on mutants as an allegory for LGBTQIA+ people (Dazzler's first song is literally called "Out and Proud"). I was initially willing to cut it some slack because it felt flawed but well-intentioned rather than malicious, but it really drops the ball by the end. Firstly, there are no queer characters in the entire miniseries, which feels cowardly. If you're going to try to depict our struggles you could at least actually depict them in addition to the sci-fi bigotry. But also, anti-mutant bigotry is such a frequent reoccurring theme throughout this, but by the end both A: The government is actually a big ally to mutants and B: It turns out that the person targeting Dazzler was actually just another mutant. It was a really frustrating copout, and it's really disconnected from the actual struggles and oppression that this is trying to comment on.
I feel so bad for being so harsh on this comic run since I can tell the author truly cares about Dazzler. Maybe I’m just too old for this run and it’s geared for children. Overall, the art was pretty and the songs were cute!
1) There is no value to panels depicting Dazzler speaking bad poetry at us. There is no audio. It's not a "concert" for those of us reading the comic book. It's just a bad poem. Sure, I got that this song was about Longshot. Because she said "Longshot" a half-dozen times. But that just reminded me...
2) When the Hell is anyone going to tell this woman that she has an adult son running around? She technically knows Shatterstar. They have interacted a little. They have been in the same room with a couple dozen other mutants many times. But, no one has stopped to talk about the ethical implications of our current status quo-- Dazzler was pregnant with Shatterstar, believes that she miscarried the baby, when actually he grew up to be a time-displaced member of X-Force. He truly is her biological son, setting aside the weirdness of how he and Longshot are each other's parent/child. Setting aside Longshot, Shatterstar is well-and-truly Dazzler's son. And she has NO FUCKING CLUE. No one feels the need to tell her this? When she finally finds out, isn't she going to feel betrayed? Isn't she at least going to be curious about what he's like, whether he inherited any personality traits from her, etc.? Isn't she going to be outraged that her son grew up enslaved in Mojo-World, and no one gave her the opportunity to try to save and raise her own son?
Why is THAT not what this miniseries was about!?
3) The "mastermind" behind all the villains messing up Dazzler's shows was extremely underwhelming. Also,
4) The cast of "NYX" showed up. Because, I dunno. Reasons. So we had more mutants participating in fight scenes, even though there were already enough mutants in this book to form a team. But, they're not a team.
More great art, more somewhat disappointing plot. I don't know enough about Jamie to know what was going on with his rogue dupe. But it was all still fun.
