Never has there been a greater need for good men than in our world today. The Christian man lives every day of his life behind enemy lines. Our world is hostile hostile to our values, hostile to our beliefs, and hostile to the principles we live by.
The way forward involves setting our sights on recovering biblical manhood. When we consider the characteristics of strong men in the Bible, we see a different pattern emerge. Good men of the Bible didn't start out as superheroes. Many of them were not especially strong or extraordinarily gifted. Most of the men who became heroes of the faith started their journey as ordinary men. But as they came to the end of the road, their steady faithfulness brought them eternal rewards. And what was true for them will be true for us today.
In this book, Stan Gleason has adapted eight of his finest messages from his extensive experience ministering at men's conferences. He extols principles of biblical manhood, encouraging men to act right, live right, and do right. By reading this book, men will find a renewed sense of purpose and fulfillment in their roles in their families and in their churches.
Practical and applicable for any and all men who desire to become the man, father, or leader that God has called them to be.
Each chapter is its own sermon of sorts and they are written in a way that the average man (even those of us who are not avid readers) would find very approachable.
I was most impacted by Chapter 6 - A Few Good Men and Chapter 8 - Every Pastor Needs a Friend, the latter of which is a powerful call for the church-going man to come under the spiritual authority of his pastor by becoming a supporter his pastor can rely on.
This is a must read for the Christian Man who wants to follow Christ and lead his family. It discusses topics such as what you bring home, spiritual authority, being famous at home, etc.
I enjoyed this wonderful book from Bishop Gleason. Stylistically speaking, it's written in a way that's similar to the way he preaches.
There's creativity, vulnerability, humor, and biblical deepness.
Pros:
1. Every chapter ends with a series of "big ideas", essentially key takeaways from each chapter. This is very helpful, considering that Gleason writes in a "jump around" way. This isn't a bad thing, in fact this kind of writing, when done right, results in a book without any "snooze" moments.
Bishop Gleason "did it right" in this book.
2. You know how certain preachers can make biblical characters come to life? Bishop Gleason did that in this book. Here's an example: "This man saw more miracles, experienced more divine power, and observed more grace and mercy than any man before or after him. All he had to say was yes but he didn't. So there he lies, Pharoh, the most powerful man on Earth, dead, drowned, huddled face down in the sand. "
3. Vulnerability is present in this book:
Bishop Gleason is vulnerable about experiences he has navigated as a Pastor but also experiences his Dad has had to navigate in ministry. He's also vulnerable in a positive way though, breaking down what made his Dad a successful father, and how we can apply those principles of upbringing/leadership to our lives.
4. Creative analogies.
Bishop Gleason uses historical examples, books, love languages, war stories, and even commercials to bring his points out. I love how Bishop Gleason mentions an analogy and circles back to a different aspect of it in the same chapter as well.
5. Top-tier biblical application:
Bishop Gleason is truly one of the most brilliant Christian speakers today, and a big part of that is his ability to notice things in the bible many miss, and make it applicable.
For example he mentions Genesis 27:26-27 where Issac tells his son to come near and kiss him.
Bishop Gleason points out that the phrase "come near now my son" was an expression used to describe armies drawing together in battle.
A unique point that many of us would miss....just as we would miss the application which is this, "A meaningful touch is not a mere ruffle of the hair or a carres of the back. The touch Issac gave to Jacob was a full-frontal embrace.”
Gleason also mentions Obed- Edom bringing the ark into his home, and how his family was blessed Spiritually and financially.
He points out that what a man brings to the home can bless the home or destroy it; yet another insightful application of scripture in this book.
Bro. Gleason does a masterful job of painting the Biblical picture of a man. This book is not long, every chapter is engaging with stories that are funny and moving, and his personal style of humor is laced throughout. I think every man should get a copy and read it. I will read this again.
Excellent book even though it is not lengthy. It is written by a pastor, Stan O Gleason, who pastored one church for over 30 years. This book is about the need for good men in the world today. He wrote about how our world needs men who have the characteristics of the strong men of the Bible.
The author sets a very high bar. It's an extremely good book and put me under conviction in a big way. That part is good although I wish I'd read it 40 years ago!
