Annette Marquis’ memoir, focused upon the long journey of uncovering the truth about her parentage, is a testimony to perseverance and courage. Filled with a multitude of twists as she does a forensic search through memory, present-day conversations, and available documents, the story weaves a powerful tale of coming to terms with the cognitive dissonance that results when those she most trusted would not reveal who her real father was.

In the end, Marquis comes to terms with the reality of her situation, finding acceptance and forgiveness. I found this passage from the book especially moving:

“Friends have asked me if I forgive my parents for lying to me, especially about something as consequential as my parentage. I can say unequivocally that just as I said, “I do” to my marriage, I can say, “I do,” to that question. Love is not perfect, just as we are not perfect. I have made my share of mistakes too, and I hope I can be forgiven for them. What I’ve learned is that my life is so much better when I live it in wholeness and truth. I’ve come to accept that holding on to anger, resentment, and distrust impacts me as much, if not more than it does the other person.”

In addition to being a personal record of uncovering the truth of her own family, this book serves as a record of what it was like to come out as a lesbian when doing so was far from safe and generally acceptable. As an out, married lesbian myself, I could relate to so much of the angst and eventual relief she found navigating this part of her personal history. I highly recommend LIVING INTO THE TRUTH for its honest, clear approach to learning how one’s past shapes the present.

Annette Marquis’s Living into the Truth is a moving testament to the courage it takes to face the hidden truths that shape our lives. With a voice that is both tender and unflinching, Marquis excavates the secrets buried within her family history, exposing how Catholicism and her mother’s devotion to appearances wove a web of lies that shaped her upbringing. Yet, rather than approaching these revelations with bitterness, she leans into compassion, offering readers a deeply personal exploration of forgiveness and understanding.

As an out lesbian, Marquis’s determination to live authentically becomes the beating heart of this memoir. Her journey is not only about uncovering family secrets but also about forging a life grounded in emotional honesty and self-acceptance. Her bravery shines in every chapter, whether she is confronting societal expectations or her own internalized struggles. Marquis’s story is a powerful reminder that living truthfully is an act of resistance, especially in the face of religious and cultural forces that demand conformity.

What sets this memoir apart is Marquis’s ability to hold complexity with grace. She does not shy away from the pain and betrayal that secrets bring, but neither does she paint her family or their faith in harshly critical strokes. Instead, she seeks to understand, inviting readers to consider the ways love and fear can coexist in even the most fraught relationships. Living into the Truth is a profoundly relatable and inspiring story, one that will resonate with anyone who has ever grappled with the tension between authenticity and belonging.

I read Annette’s memoir while she was serializing it on Substack, told with such grace—and an eye to suspense—that I really felt as though I was reading my own family history, perhaps a cousin’s. Discovering how the choices we make affect others in ways known and unknown, Annette’s journey tells the story not only of her own life, but the unfolding of queer experience at the dawn of a new era of freedom.

An engaging, moving memoir that reads like a mystery: I was lucky enough to get my copy autographed at the annual James River Writer's Conference. This account of a daughter's journey in suspecting and finally understanding her parents' secret and growing into her identity. As the cover says: "This memoir is a testament to living openly and honestly."

A journey to discovery of who one is and can be. For those who lived their life in a closet (of any type) or who lived uncertain of their heritage, this book will enlighten a journey of insight and revelation. A well written and heartfelt journey.

This book is written in an authentic voice. It’s not dramatized - it’s real and relatable. Many of us have “family stuff” that we have to work through and that influences how we live our lives. This is the story of that journey.
