La malédiction de Rascar Capac #1

Le mystère des boules de cristal

Rate this book

Georges Prosper Remi (22 May 1907 – 3 March 1983), better known by the pen name Hergé, was a Belgian comics writer and artist.
His best known and most substantial work is The Adventures of Tintin comic book series, which he wrote and illustrated from 1929 until his death in 1983, leaving the twenty-fourth Tintin adventure Tintin and Alph-Art unfinished. His work remains a strong influence on comics, particularly in Europe.

"Hergé" is the pseudonym of George Remí, making a game with the initials of his name inverted. Throughout the evolution of his star character, Tintin, we can see the progress of this author: from the first titles marked by the ultraconservative doctrine of the director of the newspaper Le Petit Vingtième, to the breaking of conventions embodied from The Blue Lotus , as well as the evolution of the society of his time. The research carried out by Hergé to historically contextualize his Adventures, as well as his implicit social criticism, have made Tintin a masterpiece of the 20th century.

Just when you wonder how many times the Moulinsart estate can repackage the same material in a worthwhile fashion that doesn't insult the Tintinophile, along comes the first of this two volume set that reprints THE SEVEN CRYSTAL BALLS as it was originally serialized in the Belgian newspaper Le Soir during 1943-1944. The presentation of the strips (on all the right side pages) are clean reproductions with original date of publiction information at the footer of the page. The left side pages of the book present contextual information about specific aspects of the strip ranging from production anecdotes, background research, and the wartime context surrounding their publication. Goddin squeezes the towel dry in pointing out seemingly inconsequential observations to shed light on how these details speak volumes to the richness of Hergé's narrative decision-making. The result is a highly entertaining and illuminating history of an important book that signals a transitional moment in Hergé's career. The most fascinating section of the book deals with the incomplete serialization of the story that resulted in the liberation of Belgium by the Allies in late 1944 and Hergé's subsequent efforts to complete the story for its album format.

Highly recommended for a variety of reasons, least of which is the opportunity to read the evoultion of one of Hergé's best stories over the course of troubled and extraordinary historical circumstances.
