Hunted book 5 of the Shorten Chronicles

I’m a big fan of Rosalind Tate’s Shorten chronicles so was waiting eagerly to receive my pre-release copy of the latest one “Hunted”. Happy to say I was not disappointed!

In the previous books we learn how Sophie and her smart Labradoodle (not-service-dog) Charlotte, bump into “Posh boy” Hugo unexpectedly at university and then having registered, they share a lift to their dorms in the student block. When the lift door opens they are stunned to discover that they have crossed universes to an alternative England in the 1920’s.

We get to know the characters and their incredible adventures through books 2,3 & 4 and when we meet them in book 5 the lift has turned against them and separated them from their loved ones.
How can they find the magic walking staff they need in order to reset the lift and return
it to its pre-sentient safe-mode?

Why does HG Wells keep trying to kill them?

All they want to do is get safely back to Shorten Manor.

I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review.

This journey through time to ancient Rome is fraught with danger for Sophie, Hugo, Freddy and Charlotte.

This is an exciting read through time. I love that the author thought to put a map at the beginning of the book.

This is book five of the Shorten Chronicles and I would recommend the series.

I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

Hunted, part five of the Shorten Chronicles, finds Sophie and the gang facing their toughest challenge yet as they travel two thousand years back in time to ancient Rome. From dark side streets to gleaming marble temples, danger lurks around every corner. If Sophie is to stand a chance of finding the artefact that could reunite her with her daughter, she must draw on all her resilience to hold her nerve and outwit the hunters.
This thrilling, twisty story takes you on a vivid journey through ancient Rome as Sophie fights to survive until the Festival of Janus. A fabulous, thoroughly enjoyable adventure.

The time Travellers go to Ancient Rome with the hope of finding the staff of Kanus back will enable them to reset Kanus and get their daughter back. It doesn’t work and so there’ll be a book 6. Darn it!! I thought this was the conclusion. Some interesting stuff about Ancient Rome but the fact that J G Wells is also a time traveler and is doing the bidding of Janus, who does not want them to get the staff, is so wacky and detracts from the story. Hard to believe Wells is a blood thirsty murderer.

Take a journey with Sophie, Hugo, Freddy and Charlotte as they go on their next adventure to Ancient Rome. You will not want to put ‘Hunted’ down until you have read to the very last page and then you will just wish that the next book was published already. This series is one of the best I have read this year; Hunted does not disappoint. It is truely heart pumping and unpredictable to the very end. I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review.

Hunted: A Romantic Time Travel Mystery book 5

Looking for the staff to rid Janus for betraying them Sophie and friends went to ancient Rome 95 ad. They used the sister ship Juno. The best thing they did was free some slaves. Back home and only author Rosalind Tate knows what is next. So if you like time travel please download this book.

This novel had lots of ups and downs, including the logic of the plot. In some ways, it seemed the author got ahead of herself and had to run to catch up. It left things feeling fractured and dissatisfied. The shift from Janus, their “elevator” god, to the mechanical Juno was a plot device but didn’t feel emotionally connected to the characters. I liked the new characters, particularly the four slaves, and I appreciated the modern sensibilities regarding slaves. Overall, this felt like a “filler” novel, with the focus being on the next book.

[I was alarmed that Rosalind Tate seemed to lift entirely a concept fully fleshed out by Jodi Taylor and her Time Police.]
