Thaddeus Stevens was a Pennsylvanian representative in the US Congress in the 1860s. He was a visionary and unwavering abolitionist long before other politicians including Abraham Lincoln. I really admire people that can fight for their believes long before their views are popular.
The book is very engaging and easy to listen to, never dry like some biographies are to me. Along with Stevens' story, it's a very good history of the Civil War and the hopeful, beginning years of Reconstruction that followed. It ends in 1868 when Stevens dies and before Reconstruction ends.
