Ah, who doesn't like Italian summer, romance and some good old filthy family secrets? 😁 This book promises all that and more, and... it delivers!

It's been a couple of days since I have finished reading "An Italian Island Secret", and I am still thinking about this book and its characters. I'm still wishing that it would go on and on and that I would, thus, live vicariously through the characters in the story. Now, this unexpected bookish nostalgia (?) might simply come from my love for Italy (yes, I know I'm unique) and my recent visit to Napoli. I'm partial, one could say.

However, "An Italian Island Secret" is truly enjoyable. It began slowly and it took me a while to warm up to it, but then it carried me away. Through the beautiful, lively descriptions of Ischia this book let me travel there as well. Isn't that the magic of reading? Really, the sense of place and culture is very strong in this novel. I've even noted down some food and place names - who knows, maybe a visit to Ischia is next?

The characters and dialogue could have been a bit more elaborate (dialogue in particular sometimes felt a bit simplistic) but were still believable and interesting enough to keep me engaged. I felt as if I was part of Alessia's and Ornella's family, as if the secrets that were slowly being revealed were impacting my life as well as theirs. Oh, what I wouldn't give to know more about their lives, especially, to know how Anna's doing after all of what happened! I hope she's still letting her hair loose and is enjoying the swing.

If you're looking for an enjoyable, well written book based in Italy during the summer but you also enjoy some good plot, look no further. "An Italian Island Secret" seduces its readers with the beauty of Italy and then captured their attention with a great storyline.

Recently I was watching one of Joanna Lumley's shows, Great Cities of the World, where she visited Rome. One of the segments in the show was about the 1950's when Hollywood came to Rome. She interviewed Gina Lollobridgida, and talked about Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton and other big stars. In this book, a lot of the action centres around the same time period, when big name Italian film stars came to film their movies on the small island of Ischia, which is just off the coast of Naples.

When Ornella moved to England from Ischia, she knew she was leaving her previous life behind. She didn't want to talk about her life before the UK, about her family or the experiences that caused her to move away.

One day Ornella and her granddaughter Alessia see something celebrating the life of a famous, glamourous movie star from the 1950s, Alessia is surprised when her grandmother starts taking about her previous life. She is even more surprised when they decide to visit Ischia. Given that Alessia has had her heartbroken and lost her job recently, there's no reason not to go! The plan is to go to the island, stay for a couple of weeks and then return. However, plans have a funny way of not working as expected, and Ornella runs into one of her best friends not long after landing.

Ich mag die Autorin sehr, und ich hatte Lust auf einen „Wohlfühlroman“ mit garantierter Romantik, Humor und mediterranem Setting. Also her mit Ms Springfields Neuerscheinung!
Was soll ich sagen? Tolles Buch. Warmherzig, amüsant, mit mehr Tiefgang als erwartet, und einfach schön. Bitte lesen!
Mit besten Dank an den Verlag und Netgalley für das Rezensionsexemplar!

Well, that’s another destination added to my “must visit” list – as always in the author’s books, the setting is far more than a mere backdrop, described in such wonderful detail, infused with sunshine, rich in history. And Ischia’s past as a favourite location for the burgeoning film industry – until then, it was an island touched by poverty, sustained only by its agriculture – adds a touch of real glamour and intrigue to this very engaging story.

Grandmother Ornella has never spoken about her past, although Alessia knows she left the island sixty years before and has never returned. But when Alessia unexpectedly loses her job as a seamstress, and is at a loose end for a while, they decide to travel to Ischia together for a holiday. When things go wrong with their booking, they find themselves staying with a former friend and her family – and as painful memories are revisited, long hidden events of the past slowly begin to emerge. In the 1950s, Ornella worked as a hairdresser on a film set – her story partly told in flashback – becoming embroiled in the lives of the rich and famous, but it was a time that ended in tragedy with the untimely death of her starstruck sister.

Amid the present day drama surrounding an upcoming marriage, deeply hidden secrets begin to emerge – including the promise Ornella made when forced to leave the island. Alessia finds romance through a chance meeting at the quayside – but Roberto’s also a journalist, digging into the past of the film’s stars, and that adds an intriguing extra dimension to the story. And there’s another thread to the story too, an enigmatic character choosing a solitary life because of her disfigurement, whose own story becomes entwined with theirs.

The whole story had me entirely gripped throughout, with so many well-handled twists and turns as we gradually discover the full and particularly emotional story of Ornella’s past. And the modern day story provides a nice counterpoint – things going badly wrong with the plans for the local wedding, but also the developing relationship between Alessia and Roberto – with the transitions to past events very smoothly done, the stories unspooling in parallel. All the individuals who play their part in the story, both past and present, are beautifully drawn and well developed, with more than a touch of well-written drama – and the author has a very sure emotional touch with the content, with the events of the past proving particularly heartbreaking. And the drawing together of all the threads at the end? That was so perfectly done, with both Alessia and Ornella looking forward to whatever the future may bring – the secrets of the past finally laid to rest.

The whole story is told with real warmth, matching the sunshine of its gorgeous and vividly drawn setting – very much my kind of read, and one I very much enjoyed.

Chase the winter blues away with this dreamy and engaging new novel by Victoria Springfield, An Italian Island Secret.

Alessia knows that her grandmother grew up on the beautiful island of Ischia, but she has always been puzzled by the fact that Ornella never makes mention of her life in Italy – or why she has never returned. Ornella has always refused to speak about her past, so she stuns her granddaughter when she mentions the fact that as a young woman she had worked on a film set back in Italy. Could the reason for her reluctance to mention the past be because of a connection between the film set and the tragic death of her teenage sister?

Ornella had made a promise decades ago – a promise she has never once broken. But perhaps the time has now come to pry open the door to her past and to think again about the love she had given up and the secret she had been forced to keep. Travelling back to Ischia with her granddaughter, Ornella is determined to find out the truth about what happened to her sister and to lay old ghosts to rest.

In Italy, Alessia finds herself drawn into this mystery from decades ago. As she meets a handsome Italian journalist willing to help her find she the answers she seeks, will the happiness that Alessia has been searching for for so long be found in Ischia? And can Ornella finally find the closure she is desperate for?

Victoria Springfield’s An Italian Island Secret is a sun-drenched, escapist and moving tale full of mystery, romance and drama that sweeps readers off to Ischia and will keep them entertained and engrossed from beginning to end. Victoria Springfield is a talented writer who makes her setting and her characters come to stunning life and readers are sure to be completely enthralled by her latest novel, An Italian Island Secret.

CW: death, death of a parent, death of a child, fire, trauma, injury, car accident, implied su!cide, implied SA

Alessia's grandmother, Ornella, rarely talks about her youth, growing up on the Italian island of Ischia. In fact, she doesn't discuss many difficult topics, including the death of her own daughter - Alessia's mother. But when they hear the news of the death of a Golden Age actress with whom Ornella once worked, the pair take a trip back to the island, to mend old wounds and heal the past.

Alessia, meanwhile, is reeling from the death of her mother and a bad breakup AND the loss of her job. With nothing to tie her to England, she leaps at the chance for an island getaway. A chance meeting with an Italian journalist and some old friends of Ornella's soon prove to be balm to Alessia's aching heart.

Secrets start unravelling as Ornella confronts her past and learns to both forgive and open up about the decisions made way back when.

This was an interesting book - there were so many plotlines and characters it was challenging to keep track of them all at once point! We have the main plot of Ornella's secrets; then we have Alessia's romance with the journalist; then we have his investigations into older film starts which is tangential to Ornella's story; then we have Alesia's friend Cristina's forthcoming wedding and her turbulent relationship with her fiancé; then we have the side story of Anna, local island recluse; THEN we have the plans for the local festival. Add in some flashbacks for Ornella, and there is a LOT going on.

Despite the many plotlines, this was an entertaining and engaging story that left the reader guessing, with a good balance of heartbreaking and heartwarming moments.

A delightful summer read.

An Italian Island Secret by Victoria Springfield is a captivating read that transports you straight to the enchanting island of Ischia. The story is rich with substance and emotion, weaving together themes of family loyalty, hidden pasts, and personal sacrifices in a way that feels deeply authentic and moving.

The vivid descriptions of Ischia are breathtaking; I could almost feel the warmth of the sun and see the beauty of the landmarks as I read. The author’s intimate knowledge and love for the island shine through, and I found myself frequently Googling the places mentioned to immerse myself even further—each time, they were exactly as described. Reading about this idyllic setting while snow fell outside my window made it all the more magical.

What stood out most was how naturally the threads of the story came together. The narrative felt like life itself—unfolding in a way that was both simple and profound. The romance was understated and genuine, allowing the relationships to develop at a realistic and heartfelt pace, rather than overwhelming the story.

The characters were wonderfully crafted—each one memorable and endearing, except for a single exception, but they don’t deserve any more of my attention! Ornella’s journey to confront her past and Alessia’s discovery of her family’s history were both poignant and inspiring.

This book had the feel of a “proper” novel, the kind with real depth and heart, reminiscent of older stories that stay with you long after you’ve finished reading.

Victoria Springfield has created a masterpiece that I will treasure and happily recommend to others.

Romance & long-term family mystery on beautiful Ischia🌅

4-4.5🌟 stars
Quite a good read that I enjoyed, with a beautiful Italian setting on the isle of Ischia a ferry ride from Naples. Ornella's family secret and the tragedy of her younger sister Maria's death, dating back to the late 1950's, kept her from returning to the island, after emigrating to the UK with husband and young child, until after her daughter Silvana's death. Her return with her Silvana's daughter Alessia in tow stirs up unsettling memories and uncovers long ago tragedy, hard choices and secrets. But it also gives Alessia a new lease on romance and leads to a good deal of healing and hope. Loved the progression and resolution of the plot, especially for brutally burned and disfigured Anna.

I felt it did start slowly, with too much atmospheric scene setting description for my taste early on, but once they settle in on the island the pace picked up, hints of simmering secrets started popping and my interest was fully engaged. The author did a good job of developing a community of characters, from movie stars and journalist to farmers, hairdressers and seamstresses, all interconnected in the unfolding drama.

The action alternates between the 1950's and the present but the transitions were well identified and not confusing.

Thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

In this fun and fascinating dual-timeline historical fiction novel, readers follow Alessia as she discovers her grandmother Ornella’s past and secrets about her life on Ischia and what happened to her sister over the course of a beautiful Italian summer. Returning to the island and discovering her family’s secrets, Alessia meets a handsome journalist named Roberto who might be able to help them discover what happened to Ornella’s sister and see if these two women can find their happy ending and put the past to bed. With a host of fantastic characters and a fun historical fiction backdrop, the emotional core of the story and the grandmother-granddaughter relationship is absolutely the star of this novel, and both Ornella and Alessia are wonderful, complex, and excellent protagonists. The historical details are unique and interesting, adding to the drama and intrigue surrounding the novel’s mystery, and readers will enjoy the depth of detail and worldbuilding present in both timelines. Deeply enjoyable and immersive with a surprisingly complex mystery at its core, this is a fantastic and exciting new historical fiction novel with two detailed timelines that readers will love. Victoria Springfield’s novel has all of the Italian summer charm and historical detail that readers of both romance and historical fiction novels will love.

What a charming story! Alessia and her 83-year-old Nonna, Ornella, have come to the beautiful Italian island where Ornella grew up. The author set a really lovely scene on Ischia, between the visual descriptions and all the little sightsee locations given throughout, I really got a feel for this place I've never been.

At first, I found Ornella to be quite a dislikable character and really wasn't sure if I would vibe with her at all. But over the course of the book, you get to know her complexities and her life story, her reasons for leaving Italy when she was young. The book includes several chapters from the 1950s perspective of Ornella, and the author has weaved those into the story in the right moments without it being confusing or aggressively time-jumpy.

Between that and Alessia's own journey of falling in love with the island, you really get pulled into the story. Beyond these two MCs, the other characters are very engaging and add much to the plot and to their individual and combined stories. I particularly enjoyed Anna's role in the story.

If you're looking for a nice escape to a whimsical island, some investigating of family secrets, and a dash of romance, I'd encourage you to read this when it comes out.

Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for a complimentary copy of this to read and review.

🇮🇹✨ **Sunshine, secrets, and a whole lot of dolce vita—what’s not to love?**

*An Italian Island Secret* whisked me away to the sun-kissed shores of Ischia, where Alessia and her nonna, Ornella, dig into long-buried family secrets. With a gripping dual timeline, a touch of old Hollywood glamour, and just the right sprinkle of romance, this novel beautifully weaves history, mystery, and emotion. Springfield’s vivid storytelling made me feel the sea breeze, the sun on my skin, smell the fresh Italian cooking, and completely lose myself in the beauty of Ischia.

It’s got everything—lush Mediterranean vibes, family drama, and a dash of romance, all wrapped up in an irresistible Italian setting. The dual timeline keeps things fresh, making both past and present equally compelling. Sure, some twists are a tad predictable, and a few scenes drag a bit, but honestly? It’s a proper feel-good escape, perfect for a lazy afternoon or a beach read.

If you fancy a bit of mystery, heartfelt family moments, and a dreamy trip to Italy without leaving your couch, this one’s a winner. Springfield captures that *dolce vita* charm effortlessly, making it the perfect book to curl up with when you need a little sunshine in your life.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ /5
Would’ve been 5 if the twists weren’t so obvious and the pacing a bit snappier. Still, a belter of a book for a cozy escape! 🇮🇹💛✨

While Alessia knows that her grandmother Ornella grew up on Ischia, an island off the coast of Naples, she knows little else. Ornella rarely talks about her life there and why she never went back. So, when Ornella reveals that, as a young woman, she had worked on the set of a famous 1950s movie filmed on the island, Alessia wonders if there is a link between the film set and the tragic death of Ornella’s teenage sister, Maria. Yet another secret that Ornella is hiding is of past love. Travelling to Ischia together, Alessia falls in love with the captivating island. Meeting handsome journalist Roberto helps her dig deeper into her family’s past, too.
I quite enjoyed the beautiful atmosphere of the island, which helps bring the characters to life. I also felt some sense of connection to the characters as the story unfolded and found the alternating storyline well integrated. While the story was slow to start and Ornella not as endearing a character, I enjoyed Alessia’s story and sweet romance with Roberto.

When Alessia loses her job as a seamstress, she decides to travel to the Italian island of Ischia with her Nonna, Ornella, to visit the area where Ornella grew up. Alessia knows that since leaving the island, Ornella has barely spoken of her life there but doesn't know why. When a mix up with their accommodation leads to a chance encounter with an old friend and with a reporter, Alessia and Ornella become swept up in life on the island. Alessia's budding friendship with Roberto, the reporter, leads her to uncover details of movies that were filmed on the island together with Ornella's involvement with the films.

This was a delightful read, filled with great characters and beautiful scenery; it really felt like your were transported to the island. Alessia, Ornella and their friends on the island were well developed characters who you got to know throughout the book.

The story moved at a good pace. Although there were some parts that were fairly obvious, there was enough intrigue and extra elements to keep the story interesting.

This is a captivating story that effortlessly blends romance, family secrets, and the allure of Italy. The narrative takes you to the stunning island of Ischia, and the descriptions are so vivid and lush that I could almost feel the warm sun on my skin.

The plot revolves around Alessia’s journey with her grandmother, Ornella, who finally opens up about the secrets she’s been keeping for over sixty years.

If you know me, you know how much Italy forms a big part of my life. I’m not Italian, but my love for the country runs deep, from its rich culture to its breathtaking landscapes. And Ischia is hands down one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. So, the moment I read the title and the description of this book, I was hooked. I didn’t even need to think twice, I was in.

This is a lovely read that’s perfect for summer, and while it didn’t completely blow me away, it was still a fun and enjoyable story.

This was the perfect summer read offering romance, second chances, new found family and family secrets, all set along the Italian coast of Ischia, which left me feeling as if I was right there!
I loved the storyline of the book as it offered a sense of mystery and this was written so well and kept me turning the pages. The dual timeline provided background of the characters and a highlight into the secrets being withheld and I adored the old style glamour of the film sets and Italy within that time. The way in which the old and new connected worked so well and I liked the idea of the past meeting the present.
I adored the relationship between Alessia & Ornella and the love they had for one another was so heartfelt and touching. They each had their own secrets and insecurities and I liked how you could see their character development and growth as the story progressed.
The ending of the story was so perfect and everything I hoped for and I really didn't want to leave the characters behind.

An Italian Island Secret by Victoria Springfield

I couldn’t have picked a better book to read on a sunny New Year’s Day in Australia than *An Italian Island Secret*. Floating in my backyard pool while immersing myself in this captivating story set on a beautiful Italian island was blissful.

The novel is filled with endearing characters and an intriguing plot that unfolds with secrets and regrets, ensuring it keeps you entertained from start to finish. It has been 60 years since Ornella last set foot on her beloved home, the Island of Ischia. Her granddaughter, Alessia, knows little about this place until Ornella’s sudden decision to return for the summer.

Throughout the story, old friends reconnect, new friendships are formed, and a web of secrets from the 1950s comes to light, affecting many lives on the island. The author beautifully portrays the setting, making you feel as if you are walking the charming old streets of Ischia.

I loved this sun-soaked dual narrative set on the beautiful island of Ischia. Alessia and her grandmother Ornella are stuck in a rut - they are both grieving and isolated from Italian family as they are the only ones left in London. When Alessia’s loses her job they make the decision to go back to Ischia for the summer, a place Ornella grew up in but abruptly left 60 years previously and has never returned.

The story deals with layers of mystery and glamour as the two women come to grips with the real secrets of their family and close friends on the island. The characters are thoughtfully drawn and their portrayal made me wish I was friends with them so I could go and visit the beautiful locations Springfield creates so vividly!

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants a slice of Italian dolce vita in their lives! Many thanks to the publishers and netgalley for the Arc in exchange for an honest review. 4 stars ✨

What a delightful story this was! I was pulled in right from the start!

Alessia's grandmother Ornella never really talks about her life in Italy. All Alessia knows is that they left suddenly not long after Ornella's loses her sister Maria. During a movie marathon, Ornella opens up a bit about her family, but closes when news is disclosed about an Italian movie star's passing. Intrigued, Alessia looks up the star and discovers it was entirely possible her grandmother knew the star.

After losing her job as seamstress, Alessia and Ornella decide to go on a trip to the Italian island where Ornella is from. Now Ornella has to decide if she is ready to tell her story about the past...

Alessia meets handsome reporter Roberto while on the island. He is working on the movie star's story and helps Alessia uncover the past...

This book is so well written and mesmerizing! The story is written in both the past and present and is captivating. I highly recommend this book!

I'm reviewing this via NetGalley, for a tour with Rachel's Random Resources.

This book was a delightful escape. At the beginning, I wanted to know more about the characters, and the general tone of the writing was warm and lighthearted. I appreciated the close bond between the protagonist, Alessia, and her grandmother, Ornella.

Part of the book takes place in the 1950s, and I enjoyed that element of the story. I also appreciated the film references throughout.

This book was heartwarming, nostalgic and romantic. I enjoyed following these characters, and I found this to be a heartfelt story that speaks to the importance of family, and knowing where you belong. I think this would also be a great choice as a summer read. If you're planning a trip to Italy anytime soon, you could take this book with you.

Thank you to NetGalley, Rachel's Random Resources, Boldwood Books, and to the author, for the opportunity to read and review this.

An Italian Island Secret by Victoria Springfield is set on the sun-soaked isle of Ischia, weaving a dual narrative that spans decades. The story follows Alessia and her grandmother, Ornella, as they leave their London life to return to Ischia, a place Ornella left 60 years ago.

The vivid descriptions of the island allow readers to feel the warm sunshine and picture the beauty of the island. The characters, and the relationship between Alessia and her Nonna, are thoughtfully crafted, making their journey of healing and uncovering the past both poignant and heartwarming. The mystery of the past kept me engaged and guessing. This is a delightful read for lovers of historical fiction, multi-generational tales, or anyone looking for an escape to a picturesque Italian island. Thanks to Netgalley for this ARC.

This book is a beautifully written cozy romance. It was a little slow to start but around the 30% mark it really picked up. An Italian Island Secret tells the story of Alessia and her nonna. Alessia lives with her nonna in England. When Nonna drops the bombshell that she used to work on a movie set back home in the island of Ischia, Alessia is shocked. This revelation sets to motion a turn of events that lead them back to Ischia for the summer. Alessia makes new friends as Nonna reconnects with an old one. But Nonna has a secret and Alessia, along with her new friends, set out to uncover what happened on that movie set so long ago.

The author is fantastic at describing the scenes. The imagery is so vivid that readers will feel transported. The modern day charm and old Hollywood glamor come together in a breathtaking novel.

captivating, nostalgic and simply brilliant!

I am a huge fan of Victoria’s books and think she has a wonderful way of capturing the essence of Italy. In The Italian Island Secret, she surpassed all my expectations, with twists and turns, so many unexpected revelations, and oodles of romance too. She treated a very difficult subject with care and kindness and brought ‘50s Italian cinema to life in this incredible dual-timeline tale. And the food…wow! Her descriptions of Ischia make me want to go right this minute. I’ve always wanted to go anyway, but Victoria has made me want to bump this up my to-visit list! I can’t recommend this book enough. It’s one of the best books I’ve read in years and comes across as a truly authentic telling of Italian/Ischian life. I really do feel this is the author’s best book yet.

An Italian Island Secret by Victoria Springfield due to be published in early 2025 is an intriguing family story that involves romance, secrets, and coming to terns with the past. I really enjoyed this book and feel that anyone who appreciates family stories with a strong sense of place and great descriptions of both locations and food will really appreciate this as well. I have never been to Italy, but the vivid descriptions made me truly feel like I was there. The story also contains a mystery with a satisfying conclusion.

While the characters could have been more distinct and the dialogue a bit sharper, An Italian Island Secret has much to recommend it and these quibbles can be overlooked. I would certainly read from this author again.

Thank you to Net Galley and Boldwood Books for providing a digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

Set between two timelines, this haunting story includes Hollywood glamour and a mystery that is crying out to be uncovered. I have never visited Italy but have heard of Ischia and its long-standing relationship with the film industry and have it in my mind a little like the Italian equivalent of Cannes.
Alessia is a beautiful character and a devoted granddaughter. Having lost her job in London, she is determined to find a new path while she accompanies her grandmother on her trip back to the Island of her youth. Her character and disposition enable her to make friends easily. I enjoyed following her story and seeing how her decisions would unfold.
Ornella, on the other hand, guards her memories closely and refuses to reveal much of her past. Each time the book returned us to the 1950s, I felt that I was actually there, rubbing shoulders with the stars of the day. The loss of her sister and the mystery surrounding the missing nanny drove the story at a steady speed, gradually gaining momentum with each chapter.
There’s a fabulous cast which incorporates characters from the earlier years alongside the friends Alessia makes in the contemporary story, helping to stitch the threads of the two timelines together. With the explanations of the parade for Saint Cornelius’s Day, it was clear that the community had always been tight-knit, and the residents supported each other without exception. I would hate to include any spoilers, but as he’s included in the synopsis, a special mention has to be given to the simply gorgeous Roberto.
With a reader's heart and mind, I tried to guess the overall outcome of this story and waited for Roberto’s true colours to be revealed, as he certainly seemed too good to be true. Whether he’s genuine will be revealed when you read it for yourself.
Escape to Ischia and enjoy the golden age of film.
