Bridget was unhappy about being forced to marry Paul St. Vincent, Viscount Wrottesly, and more unhappy about the dress that her mother insisted that she wear. Shortly before the wedding was to take place she overheard her fiance telling his friend all of the reasons that he did not want to marry her. He stated that if it were not for her substantial dowry he would not think twice about walking out on her. That was when she knew that she had to escape immediately. She fled to her friend’s house, who in turn sent her to the Scotland home of Nora Thomson, the daughter of Laird MacArthur. After a stormy few weeks on a schooner, she disembarked expecting to be on the island housing MacArthur lands. Being an Englishwoman in Scottish territory led to people giving her misinformation, having her trunks stolen, and finding herself hopelessly lost in the woods. When Ewan, Laird MacCartney, found her stumbling trhough the forest, a scared Bridget sprained her ankle tripping over a root while trying to get away from him. He took her to his castle, engaged a healer for her, and told her that she could stay until her ankle healed and then she would need to move on. He did not want to battle Englishmen who were searching for her. What follows is the story of two people trying to ignore the push/pull of attraction pulsing between them. When Ewan’s Aunt Margaret threw a party in Bridget’s honor, there was an altercation between Ewan and Laird Alistair, who insisted that Ewan should be marrying his sister, not engaging with an English ‘whore’. It was not too long after that that there were rumors of an English gentleman inquiring after his betrothed. This story contains lots of conflict, familial dissention, heightened emotion, betrayal, dangerous revelations, murderous intent, surprises and steamy encounters. Character-wise, the author uses nightmares and innuendo to give us a glimpse of the horrors Ewan suffered by his father’s hand. As for Bridget’s parents, we get a firsthand view of her mother’s selfish and controlling nature, while her father uses Bridget’s love for him to manipulate her. Ava is a hoot and adorably smitten with her husband, and her mother offers Bridget all the love and support she needs. Bridget blossoms once she is away from her parents, inspiring Ewan to let go of the past and live again. You will shake your head, grit your teeth and hold your breath as you read this exciting, and sometimes exasperating tale. But beware, once you start you will be hooked and won’t want to put it down!
