I have a deep appreciation for spiritual books, especially devotionals and Bible studies. The Stories of Women is an 8-week Bible study that comes in a spiral-bound format with a lay-flat design, making it perfect for easy notetaking and filling out the Q&A sections.
I hold this Meet Me in the Bible study in high regard. I enjoy individual study because it allows me to explore topics at my own pace and depth, but they also work nicely for group study. The stories of women in the Bible are particularly meaningful to me because they give me guidance, inspiration, and a fresh perspective on God’s Word.
The study’s straightforward layout and easy-to-follow questions help me understand Scripture in a new light by examining these women in their historical and cultural contexts. I especially value the “Key Words and Phrases” sections for each story, as they emphasize the core messages.

This is a fantastic format for group Bible study, and a bit different than any I've lead over the past couple of decades. For one, the entire passage is included with wide spacing in the guide. So it's easy to mark up with cross references, highlight repeated words, and write observations and questions in the margins. I appreciated that these were FULL passages - sometimes several pages long - which helps give context. Instead of discussion questions (which can be leading questions sometimes, or take discussion in directions that aren't where the participants necessarily would go on their own), it is structured with the steps of inductive Bible study. There are blocks of space for you to record: - observations (characters, locations, a plot summary) - questions or things that piqued your curiousity - repeated words or phrases you noticed - questions about what was hard to understand - recording the attributes of God you find in the passage - what God's view of women is, based on the passage - what you learned about yourself and people in general
This is a much more freeform approach than most study guides I've used, and teaches women HOW to study and dig deep into Scripture without someone holding their hand each step of the way. Several of the women in the group said this was so helpful to them in learning how to study for themselves!
There are also several appendices (the Tool Kit in the back) which include maps, timelines, spaces for notes, and - most helpful - several fairly open-ended discussion questions for each lesson. I waited until we had discussed the study in full before turning to those questions.
I found our discussion was SO MUCH more compelling than usual using this guide, because the women are bringing up what they saw, what they observed, what their questions are, instead of using a contrived set of questions that may not touch on those things.
Kudos to Colleen Searcy - and Jen Wilkin - for this great new series! We definitely will be using it again for our church's women's Bible study!
[Thank you @crosswaybooks for my gifted copy of this study in exchange for an honest review.]
This beautiful bible study is part Scripture journal and part Bible reading guide. I love the spiral bound format and the way that the actual Bible passages are included. The paper in this bible study is perfect for writing in and highlighting! There’s also plenty of designated space for notes.
This study follows the steps “Observe,” “Interpret,” and “Apply.” The study offers context and helps readers find key words and phrases. Your copy of the study includes a bookmark with these steps and tips to help guide you as you read!
I also appreciate the Bible Tool Kit included at the back of the study. There you can find a Bible timeline, maps, genres, a list of God’s attributes, prayer pages, additional discussion questions, and more.
Women included in this study:
-Sarah and Hagar -Leah and Rachel -Women in Exodus -Deborah and Jael -Elizabeth and Mary -Anna and Tabitha -Martha and Mary -The Woman at the Well and the Woman Caught in Adultery
Other studies in this series include:
-Colossians and Philemon -The Story of Abraham -The Story of Jacob
I’m looking forward to doing this whole study soon!
