This book is written for moms and comes from the heart of a mom who has been there. Right in the middle of raising her five kids, Faris understands the complexities of motherhood and knows how deeply important it is to fix our eyes on the unchanging character of God as we seek His sustaining grace for every hour.

Moms can be pretty good at seeming to do it all: the kids, the house, the schooling, the career…but are we really? Isn’t it a burden to carry the weight of self-sufficiency? All too often this illusion of self-sufficiency easily leads to self-focus and exhaustion, maybe even down right burnout.

But what if we humble ourselves and draw near to God, admitting we need Him for our every breath and utterance? What if we expand our view of who God is, according to His Word and not according to our own Image or what culture says?
We might just find true rest and peace as we abide in the One who is sovereign, strong, merciful, gentle, and patient.

Each chapter of this book zooms in on a specific attribute of God and is packed with Scripture as it draws our attention up to our Father. More of Him, less of us. May this be the song of our Mothering.

Thank you to @crossway for a complimentary book in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.

I received Every Hour I Need You compliments of Crossway in exchange for my honest review.

Every Hour I Need You is a thirty day devotional for Christian moms by mother and author Katie Faris. I’ve read and loved Katie’s other books on motherhood and have been so blessed by Every Hour I Need You ! The content for each day centers on an attribute of God and includes biblical encouragement for motherhood.

Each devotion concludes with a Reflect section and a Draw Near section, and both include space for journaling. There is a third section that focuses on the attribute featured in that day’s reading, and it also includes journaling space.

The book's appendix includes an Attributes of God Chart that lists the attributes mentioned in the book, a verse to memorize for each attribute, and verses for further study on it. I love that the primary focus of Every Hour I Need You isn’t motherhood, but God.

I found the devotion on God's wrath interesting, and I'm grateful for it because I believe reading it made me a better student of God's word. Although there is much in it that I’m grateful Katie included, I don't believe that wrath is an attribute of God. I believe that God feels wrath toward sin, but wrathful is not who He is.

Wanting unbelieving moms to know Christ, I’m confident, is one of the motivations for including this devotion. I love Katie’s encouragement that “Our comfort as Christian women is that when God judges us, it isn’t from wrath but from mercy” (pg. 108).

For years, I was taught that wrath is an attribute of God. I never considered it wasn’t until my pastor preached a sermon and stated it wasn't. I researched this a bit on my own and came to the same conclusion (I've articulated some of my thoughts about it here).

The devotion on wrath includes a quote from the late theologian and pastor A.W. Pink's book,  The Attributes of God , stating, “a study of the concordance will show that there are more references in Scripture to the anger, fury, and wrath of God, than there are to His love and tenderness.”

This quote gave me pause as it seemed unbelievable. I quickly skimmed my Strong’s Concordance and didn’t find this to be the case. I also asked ChatGPT if this was the case, and was encouraged by the information it compiled. Additionally, typing "God's love" into the Bible search on Logos Bible Software yielded 327 results while "God's wrath" yielded 108.

Interestingly, Crossway, the publisher of  Every Hour I Need You , also published  The Atonement by Jeremy Treat, in which Treat claims that wrath is not an attribute of God. From my understanding, this is an area where Christians have different convictions, but it needn't cause disunity.

I’m thankful for how Katie’s writing encouraged me to dig deeper and increased my awe of God. Her writing is honest about the realities of mothering in a fallen world, and reading her books makes me feel like I have a friend who is near and understands. I enjoyed  Every Hour I Need You and hope to read it repeatedly. I highly recommend this book for personal use and believe it would be a great gift for a new or seasoned mom.

In Every Hour I Need You, Katie Faris offers a powerful and deeply encouraging collection of thirty devotional meditations that connect the dots between who God is and what it means to walk through everyday motherhood. With personal stories, theological depth, and gospel-saturated wisdom, Faris invites moms—and really, any reader—to lift their eyes from their own inadequacies and fix their gaze on the sufficiency of God.

Each chapter highlights a different attribute of God, gently reminding readers that our identity and strength are rooted not in our performance, but in God’s unchanging character. Faris writes with humility and honesty. I was most moved to read of Faris’ own journey as a mom, including her vulnerable reflections on walking through grief and uncertainty when three of her children were diagnosed with a serious medical condition and trusting in God’s sovereignty. As she says, knowing that God is in control became more comforting than having all her questions answered. That struck me deeply—as a dad, I was reminded that I don’t have to be in charge. I can point my family to Christ.

Comforting and Refereshing

Faris’s reflections are theologically rich, yet always accessible. Her writing is relatable and warm, full of grace and clarity. She doesn’t sugarcoat the challenges of parenting, but she continually returns to the hope and strength found in God’s presence. I was especially interested by her meditation on God’s omnipresence. While I’ve known this truth in my own life, I hadn’t truly considered what it means for my children—that even when I can’t be with them, God can. That realization lifted a weight off my shoulders. I often feel guilty for not always being there, or fearful for their safety. Faris reminded me that God is always with them, and that’s a far greater comfort than anything I can provide.

This book will stir your affections for God, help you cherish the calling of motherhood, and remind you that the hard, beautiful work of parenting is also one of the most profound means of sanctification. Every Hour I Need You will comfort weary parents and refresh you with a glimpse of God’s faithfulness.

Whether you’re looking for a devotional for yourself or hoping to bless another mama, Every Hour I Need You by Katie Faris is one to consider. This 30-day devotional feels like a comforting cup of chicken soup for the soul—encouraging, scripture-rich, and filled with godly wisdom and reflection.

Each day’s reading points us back to our deep dependence on Christ, reminding us that we can’t walk this motherhood journey alone. I especially appreciated the reflection questions at the end of each devotion; they invite you to pause, pray, and rest in the truth that we truly need Jesus every hour of every day.

No matter where you are in your walk—whether you’re a new mama learning to find your rhythm or a seasoned mom seeking fresh encouragement—these short, thoughtful devotions are perfect for busy hearts longing to grow in faith and grace.

🌿 One passage that especially stayed with me reads:

“Our children don’t need perfect parents. They need faithful parents who point them to a perfect Savior. And having loved and labored to serve our families, we each want to hear our Lord’s commendation, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant’ (Matthew 25:21).

But our ultimate hope isn’t in anything we do—for our children, or even for the Lord. The hope that tired, hard-pressed, anxious, fearful, and discouraged moms need is this: God is faithful. Even when we are faithless—when we lose perspective and doubts creep in—He remains faithful (2 Timothy 2:13). He is faithful to us and our children. He is faithful to His Word and His promises.”

“The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” — Lamentations 3:22–23

Thank you, @crosswaybooks, for my copy in exchange for my honest thoughts. What a blessing this devotional has been to read and reflect on. 💛
