I thought I'd found the perfect place at MistHallow Academy and after a rocky start, I hoped things would settle. But the ancient forest surrounding our sanctuary awakens, pulsing with a magic that calls to me, and only me, it seems.
I think I’m the key to unlocking this primordial power – a power that could save or destroy the supernatural world. Each of my guys embodies a different aspect of this magic, and I'm caught in the middle.
I'm grappling with a force beyond my understanding, and it gets my sire, the vampire I've been running from, has resurfaced. He claims he's here to protect me, but can I trust the monster who turned me against my will?
With the academy on edge and the forest's magic growing stronger by the day, I'm walking a tightrope between desire and duty. One misstep could plunge our world into chaos.
I never asked to be the fulcrum on which the fate of the supernatural world teeters, and yet. As the veils between love, power, and danger blur, I'll have to decide who to trust – and who to love.
This is a dark paranormal romance book 2 out of 3 in a brand new reverse harem romance by USA Today Bestselling Author, Eve Newton. Set in England and written in British English, you will come across TWs so please see inside for details.
Eve is a USA Today Bestselling Author with a specialty for steamy romance with strong female leads.
She lives in the UK, with her husband and five kids, so finding the time to write is short, but definitely sweet. Eve has a number of series, both completed and on the go and hopes to release some new and exciting projects, both paranormal and contemporary in the future, so stay tuned!
The whole thing was contrived, all over the map and often contrary.
Things kept happening without any reason or rhythm. Conclusions were decided upon without any reason or rhythm. Actions were taken without any reason or rhythm.
Meanwhile, the ONE thing that was VERY important to do, never was. It was pure idiocy.
And then there is the huge gaping plot hole: how is Nathaniel getting on the campus at will and, since he can, why didn't he just steal her away in the first place???
It was like the author made a list of bullet points she wanted the story to hit, expanded the bullet points but didn't bother to actually plot and connect them. If I went thru and highlighted all the ass-pulls, the manuscript would be covered in yellow marker.
Oh, and the subterranean jaunts were just repeats of the ones in the same author's 'Cursed Descent' series with less logic and point. (In fact, while reading this I kept getting the feeling this was the original draft for that other series.)
The men were still interchangeable outlines, there was still zero relationship-building and and the smut was still flat. There was more credible emotion between the female lead and the villain than between her and all three of her men put together. Sure, it was fear and loathing but at least it felt real.
Oooh weeee honey child sweet ice tea Lordy I am so not okay. How does Eve keep doing this to us. I swear she’s like a magician behind the pages. Just when you think you have an idea of where she is going with the plot she throws a whole other thing in there and goes a completely different route…. But oh it’s so enjoyable to be in this wild ride… and of course like her signature she gives us a cliff that leaves us dying for the next read….
Violet is growing in each chapter, she is filled with sass and makes me laugh when she is being her spicy self! Flint is so adorable but that alpha! *fans* Cain is so freaking cool, I really want to explore his history and backstory. Thorne is dark and smokey lol This storyline and the characters keep you HOOKED the chaos they go through and everything are pulling me deeper and deeper into the story~
Just wow! Just when you think you might have an inkling of an idea of what comes next, Eve throws in a curve ball (or 5), really keeping you guessing. And, of course, she leaves you with an epic cliffhanger, meaning you curse her to the depths of Ice Hell and praise her to high Heaven for being able to keep you on your toes through out the whole book and desperately waiting for the conclusion.
I don’t know if it’s me or what. But I just can’t get into this story. It doesn’t seem cohesive. Something major happens and it’s glossed over. Or they have a bed party. Like what?
The type, amount, and potency of drugs that would have to be present to write something this bad would easily send an 19th century woman to the sanatorium with a news worthy level of insanity that no shock treatments or prescribed trip to the seaside would have any hope of curing.
It’s just all made up. I understand all books are, but this is like someone telling a bedtime story in a stream of consciousness (one that calls for concern) without any revision or revisiting, orgy reward for doing laundry included.
It’s a constant deux ex machina. Big information is added on to aid the story with no build up or precursor, it just is and you’re welcome. Guess why we’re all attracted to each other? We’re mates. No, wait, we’re fated to all be connected because the forest says so. Forest says it’s time to all hold hands and become one! We’re the all powerful conduit for the trees now.
As if we haven’t all had the exact same conversation at 2AM in a copse of greenery at a music festival.
It’s such a mess that I’m disappointed in the surety that they’ll all survive.
I truly am not okay...the ending was so unexpected I'm speechless. Every single time Eve blesses us with her work it gets more and more thrilling.
Violet-with how long she has been in this world, she is handling it like a champ! Her growth is slowly getting to the point where she needs to be. No any fault of her own. Love her character and her sass.
Flint-I am telling you right here and right now. He is to cute to flipping handle! His alpha was definitely in effect in this book and I couldn't stay in my seat with how hottt he was in that explosion scene. (Will have to read it to find out)
Cain- OKAY, OKAY we all know he's flipping amazing but come on!!! How much cooler can this man get?! His power is mind blowing and the way he loves Violet is other worldly. I am intrigued on why he can't stand to be touched, unless it is by Violet...hmm interesting. Love him and I need see more of his cane!!
Thorne-we get to see and know more about our dark, nerdy enforcer in this one and what can I say? He is definitely the anchor to my soul! (You have to read it to understand that saying) I know he is slowly becoming a favorite, and he is cousins with Zephyr, so what could go wrong?!
Gaida- Okay, I was suspicious about her at first but now I need a whole harem for her. She deserves it and I hope we get an age gap for her, we know she likes them older! Besties for life!
Nathaniel-I was originally thinking he was slimy and pure evil. But now, I think there is more to his story than what we are getting. I don't trust him but, I'm getting different vibes from him. We will have to keep our eyes on him for sure!
Morgan- I don't like her one bit! I am side eyeing her character HARD!!
Blackthorne- he is a baddie and I would call him daddy! He sees all and knows all!
We don't get to see Glazier in this one and I am truly sad he is taken but we get to see Cains dad, and he knows something that he won't share! Doesn't he know sharing is caring??!!
I highly recommend this book and the author!! Definitely a must read!!!
The first book was interesting, I loved the story, the characters, and I was excited for the second book. But as I was reading, the timeline seemed ridiculous (it's literally been less than a week for the last two books) and now, after everything, they still go to the school but have to keep everything a secret to protect her? Like no one has noticed everything and not question why they are all allowed back at the school??
My other issue was with the FMC and the MMCs. The MMCs were constantly coddling her and one particular MMC seemed like he was only there to be the researcher. There was little character development with them and it seems like their only purpose is to support and please her. She became whiny and impatient, I started to get annoyed whenever I got to her parts and that's usually when I'm turned off from the book, so that's when I called it.
I absolutely devoured this book! Eve writing draws you in and you will not want to put it down. Violet is one of my favorite FMCs. Her internal struggle she has with Nathaniel, and how she fights to be stronger like she was prior to meeting him. Watching her relationships develop with Thorne, Flint and Caine, you could see the faded Bond that pulls them together. This book introduces us to Gaida, a new bestie for Violet and i am loving the development of their friendship. If you can’t tell, there is a common theme of my review. Love, love, LOVED!!! 😍
And breathe.............. My brain can't compute everything that's going on in this series!! It keeps swinging in one direction only to have something happen and it goes off somewhere completely different. If I'm being fair though that's what I'm loving the most about this series. As more is uncovered about Violet, her powers and what her purpose is it brought up more unanswered questions as well as folks with their own agendas to surface. All making for one hell of a twistedly brilliant read. I'll be on edge until I get my hands on the 3rd book now.
Eve Newton is an author that can grab my imagination and run with it. With Violet and her guys she has truly ensnared me with their story. I cannot believe that what they go through, what the author makes me ass - isn't real. Honestly I've had dreams about Caine, Flint, Thorne and Violet. And the monsters they face are truly terrifying. What an amazing world MistHallow is. A must read for any paranormal lovers of academy settings. Love the side characters that we see, and Blackie (Blackthorne) has had my heart since we first met him 🖤
Wow this is just a fantastic series. This is the second book in the Shadow Descent series. Seriously this story is just getting better and better. First off I love being back with Violet, Cain, Thorn, and Flint . Ever since book 1 I’ve been counting down for this book. Like I’m obsessing over this world. I will say cliffhanger….. not nice. I think I put my kindle down and had to clear my mind a little. Overall. I love it. Storyline can’t get any better. So looking forward to book 3. Definitely a must read!!
This is a fast paced Romantasy series with more twists and turns than a maze (and there is actually a maze).
You follow Violet and her mates Flint, Caine and Thorne on their journey to save the supernatural world. Despite everything that they face, they overcome their obstacles and show that as long as they’re together anything is possible. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy it’s filled with enough humour, excitement, love and heartache to have you eagerly anticipating the next book.
Echt wow.
What I love here is just when you think you know what you're getting into. Think again! The twists and turns are just beyond anything and I love it! The unpredictable story is just so good! I love Violet and how strong she is with everything thrown at her. I love Caine, Flint and Thorne so much! These guys are really looking out for Violet and have her on spot number 1. I honestly can say I love this series so much that I am looking forward to what comes next!
What a rollercoaster! So much action, so must revealed! Eve kept me on the edge of my seat this whole time, can’t wait for the conclusion of this series! It just gets better and better! When you think it can’t get any crazier, bam! It does! Eve does a great job world building and telling a story with depth and mystery, I love it! She knocks it out of the park with this PNR. Love all the characters.
This book continues right where book 1 left off. Violet is learning more about who she is, and who she needs to be, right along with her 3 gorgeous mates. Flint's perception of who he is is completely flipped, Caine comes into his own, and Thorne realizes his connection with Vi runs especially deep. Her sire has nefarious plans, and he's trying to use Vi to accomplish them. Will she realize what he's trying to do, before the world shatters?
Violet is one of my favorite FMCs. I love how she fights to find herself, to be strong like she was before the trauma that Nathaniel caused. She's growing into this new version of herself and her guys are right there with her.
Once again Eve has done a great job with world-building and really building the mystery into this story. I love it and the characters!
Eve Newton did amazing in book 2 not only ramps up the stakes but also ignites with sizzling romance that keeps you hooked. Violet’s journey her complex relationships with Caine, Flint, and Thorne add a delicious layer of spice to the already gripping narrative. The emotional weight and magical chaos come together in a jaw-dropping cliffhanger that leaves you breathless and craving more.
The twists. This second book of the Shadows Descent series was filled with them. It made for a read that was unpredictable and kept you guessing and one the edge of your seat. There is alot that is happening in Violet's story. I am loving what was revealed and her strength. After this book i definitely have more questions than answers.
I was so excited for this book. I absolutely love Violet, she has had so much happen to her in such a short time frame, and yet the girl is still standing. She finds out more about why, and let's just say it's mind-blowing information. This story is action packed, full of heat, and making me rethink if I want to become supernatural or not.
Veiled Desires is the second book in the Shadows Descent series by Eve Newton. Violet is still discovering everything about her men: Cain, Flint, and Thorn. Her master, the vampire that changed her against her will, is back claiming to want to protect her. Can she trust him? The forest is growing in power, can she figure everything out before it's too late.
You continue to delve into Violet's journey with Caine, Flint, and Thorne. The veil of Violet's new life is starting to lift, and you start to see Violet's fate. I must say I am loving Gaida because every girl needs a girl BFF! Another must read! No, seriously, why are you still reading my review!? Download this book now!
This was way better than the first book, I didn't feel like everything was being repeated over and over. There was a lot more world building in this one that I was grateful for, and we finally got some questions answered. I will definitely be marking my calendar for the release of the third book.
While I'm enjoying the story, it's a little much. Violet goes from being human, to having ideas that not even life long supes have, in a very short period of time. I get that she has Morgana's essence in her, but it's still a little too much, too fast. Half the time I feel like I don't understand what is going on. Still, I like the story, so I'll read on....
As I think I find with most of this author's work, it gets too convoluted. She needs a bit of refining and cohesion. Too many threads cut short or ignored. I started to lose interest part way through. I may take a break between this and the last book. I will say that she does know how to write a good cliffy. I'm intrigued enough for book 3.
If you love paranormal books then this is a book for you. You can't help but fall in love with Violet and her guys Thorne, Flint, and Caine. They face trials and tribulations that bring them closer together and grow as a group. Eve never disappoints with each book she writes.
I thought I couldn’t love Violet and the gang more but here we are!! The relationships between the main characters and the new ones has been so addicting to read!! This story had me in its grips from the word go!
I’m loving this series…but those cliff hangers are a doozy! Things are getting crazy and just when you think you know, something else goes haywire. I can’t wait for the last book. Lucky for me it says it’s out in 3 days!
In this book we learn a whole lot more about what Violet is and why Nathaniel wanted her. Her and her men have to figure out why a magical forest calls to her and how to stop wild magic from taking over
