Biomance: An Urban Fantasy Slice of Life

Rate this book
I had an ordinary life running a video store…until a ghost crawled out of the TV and gave me powers.

Our retro-tech towns might seem idyllic, yet go beyond the arcades and coffee shops and you'll reach the danger zones roamed by bionic bots. Me? I ran a video store with my cute friend Emiko. She's always been a little different, so I had to look out for her—we usually just watched movies and played games together.

One day, a suspicious pink-haired chick burst into the store, warning me not to watch a tape labeled Property of Steelheart—Do Not Watch! So obviously, I did, and a terrifying ghost crawled out of the screen.

But this isn't a horror movie. That busty ghost gave me powers! Suddenly, those no-go zones weren't so no-go after all. I could roam them freely, and destroy the bots with a mere closing of my fist, crumpling their bionic bodies like paper.

But how could I use my gift when I needed to hide it from that shady agency? And if they knew where the tape was, why hadn't they come for me already? Maybe that pink-haired agent wasn't all she seemed…

This book just wasn't very good for me. I finished it, but kind of wish I had bailed on it.

The MC is a guy that owns/operates a video store, like from before Blockbuster era. It isn't Earth that I can tell, but so little world building was done, it could be an alternate reality for all I know. Some weird chick shows up at his store, tells him that whatever he does, if someone turns in a video tape wit a certain label on it, don't view it and call her. He finds it in the drop box, so naturally he views it. And promptly summons some female entity.

The entity is annoying, and yet she's his first intimate encounter. She doesn't understand much that is modern, having lived hundreds of years ago apparently. There is also the roommate and lifelong friend, who appears to be somewhere "on the spectrum" and can be hyper focused and antisocial. She joins his "harem", as well. She is mildly interesting, but so damned awkward I couldn't like her that much. And a third, the woman that dropped the cassette off and told him not to view it, is a potential third in the future.

There is pretty much no romance at all. The lifelong friend thing would have worked if she wasn't so awkward. The entity would work if she wasn't so weird. The third would work if she didn't lie a lot. The whole story would work if there was a shred of world building going on. I actually had twice as many questions about the world after reading the book than I did when I started it.

I will not be reading another story in this series.

Mostly an infuriating blur of nonsense references and non-sequiturs, random rubbish happening and sometimes unhappening, seriously just random crap happening out of nowhere that doesn’t make sense, and everyone keeps smirking and metaphorically waggling their eyebrows like it’s the cleverest thing on earth. I hardly need to mention that of course, the sex is furiously unsexy and the romance laughably perfunctory. I must have sort of enjoyed the first part but any promise was, I’m afraid, completely unfulfilled. Still, at least they kept the names straight and I don’t recall many typos. I mean, they confused “tortious” (‘being related to torts’, which are a kind of civil legal action) with torturous, which thinking about it was probably due to confusing torturous with tortuous, and then further mixing it up, but that’s actually kind of impressive. Oh, but they think spiders are insects. Hmm. You know, I’m just going to stop there. Enter at your own peril.

The setting was pretty good, and the story was decent, and i liked some of the characters too. Namely MC and the pink haired girl (i've already forgotten her name). Hated Emiko and Sybil though. Not the way they were written, i'd just hate them in real life, if i knew them. That said, i didn't like the writing of this story, a lot of the dialogue. Especially that editorializing diatribe about Facebook and Myspace masked as a weird conversation that would never happen.

Different but great!

This story did not go the way it expected, but it turned out wonderful. I really like that one of our main female characters is on the spectrum. It is something you rarely see, and she is portrayed incredibly, and I'm happy with the way her and our MC relationship developed. I look forward to the next book.

Interesting Concept

The storyline was pretty straightforward but the world background didn’t quite mesh with a plausible overall situation. The character creation was good but personality traits were lacking. I assume more background information will be provided in future releases. Four stars for an interesting storyline but I don’t plan to read more at this time.

Great Banter and a Fun Read!

I had a lot of fun reading this one. The characters have some very good chemistry and it comes across in their dialogue and banter. It's just a good time.

Masterpiece

It's just a masterpiece, plain and simple. We've got cute relationships including friends to lovers, we've got great humor, we've got some stakes and some plot but also some slice of life, we've got some intriguing threads to follow in future installments as well.

Interesting setting.
A lot of banter and very strange characters.
Only drawback was that I couldn't understand a lot of decisions the MC made. I think he took way too big risks without an idea why.

Interesting concept

Shows promise, though it seems a bit dystopian. Hard to tell if it’s a post apocalypse world or a world in decay, or something else altogether.

Caused to much head bob

DNF. Wow, 20% in and its almost all boring dialog. Not to sure about the urban fantasy, but the slice of life was way to thin for me.

P.O.S.

Not just bad, but very bad. Lots of BS and krap on paper trying to be a story of some kind. Not there.

Banter was okay, everything else was meh. Author seems to have left the genre, so don't waste your time with this anymore.

A kinda interesting story held back by just a sheer lack of anything happening.
All the dialogue and character interactions feel weird and stilted. One of the characters has autism, which could explain part of it, but I mean beyond that. No one is memorable or even really that believable.

The world is a typical near-future dystopian cyberpunk landscape, so nothing unique there.
The magic introduced isn't explained or really even used more than a few times.

I really just have no idea where the authors wanted to take the plot. The whole book felt like it was building up to something, with the MC developing powers and everything. But... nothing ever does.
