Sid is the inevitable effect of what a small town upbringing brings to the city life. A self-confessed “unromantic”, somewhere in his simple exterior lies a weak preacher, whose yardsticks of life change radically when the unpredictability of life starts experimenting with him.
Anushka, armed with her unselfconscious beauty and poisons imbued into her life, has declared war on the world of men from a young age.
Their romance, even after her protest, is ignited by a train robbery that becomes unforgettable for reasons other than the robbery, catches the warmth because of an adolescent romance that reaches consummation, but remains within the periphery because of a live-in relationship that is on the verge of break-up.
They fall in love, but somebody is not happy with their relationship. Sid is threatened. Will he rise above his fear this time?
My first thought about this book was : "What an unusual title!"
That thought sort of stayed with me throughout the book; This is not your usual boy-meets-girl love story. in fact, I'm not sure what category to shelve this under. This story has several subplots and thankfully, many of those are tied up quite nicely in the end. (even the ending, which I thought was a bit rushed, was explained in the Epilogue)
The characters in the books are not perfect or instantly likeable. They are flawed, they dwell in self-doubt, battle insecurities, they suffer the consequences of bad decisions from the past - in other words, they're relatable and human. Which is probably what I liked most about the book. I found the narrative style to be interesting as well. It was like a flower, slowly unfolding petal by petal.
That said, the book did drag a bit at the beginning but thankfully gained pace somewhere in the middle. I also felt the proofreader could have done a better job, because there were off-putting errors that could've been avoided.
But don't let that stop you. I'd say, give this book a go for the story which is interesting, engaging and different!
Sorry...again-Can he purge his sins? -by Amit Singh
Life gives us one chance and sometimes a second one as well but if we don’t solve things in the second one, then we should be ready for its consequences.
‘Sorry again-Can he purge his sins’ is a story that revolves around the protagonist Sid who somewhere is getting punishments for the sins he has made in life. The story starts at midnight when Sid comes out of his flat to run away from the promises he made to Madhumita. For a moment he looks at her flat’s door hoping she would come running towards him, but she doesn’t and he gets successful in running away from the promises he has made.
Time passes, he met Mallika (by chance) and Anushka (intentionally) who turns out to be a single character with misunderstood names. Their consistent meetings, loneliness and Anushka’s mysterious past grew them closer to each other. The book takes a different turn when Sid started getting threatening calls to leave Anushka from someone unknown. To solve the mystery, he visits Kolkata to meet Anushka’s father and to face the sins he has made in his past.
By not revealing all the answers, I’ll recommend everyone to read this book.
My Opinion: It was indeed a great book with the suspense created till the very end. The story is well written and perfect justice is given to all the characters involved in the book. With a lesson that, we get punished for the sins we have made, in this life only, the story ends. I was not able to guess the suspense till the last made me stick to it till the very end.
Overall Ratings: Book Cover: 3.5/5 Plot: 3.5/5 Character justification: 5/5 Final Rating: 3.5/5
What a surprise. I came to know about this book through Goodread Ad and somehow clicked on the link. Long back I was a fan of Indian fiction and have seen the quality deteriorating, hence initially I was not interested to read this one, but the name of the book was very intriguing, hence I searched Google and found good reviews in various blogs hence I took it. And this book was really a big surprise. A commercial Indian fiction which finally has a story and also has few feel good moments. The story is not linear and goes through many twists and turn. There are many subplots, but are beautifully narrated so it doesn't confuse you. And a happy ending, to keep you asking for more from this Author. Though a bit long for a single sitting reading, i finished book in a single sitting. Must read from my side.
The first time I read the title of the book – it hit me as unusual. It seemed like two titles were joined together to form it. I found it intriguing as well as it signaled that the novel was going to an interesting one. In the beginning of the book, we find the protagonist stealthily coming out of his office to catch a flight. Why he is being so secret about it is not revealed and it builds up the curiosity of the readers. Gradually, we know about Sid and his life in bits and pieces. We know about his past and present, his insecurities and fears and about the love of his life – Mallika aka Anushka. But, she has her own demons to fight – the untimely and mysterious death of her mother and the strained relationship with his father doesn’t let her trust anyone. How will she cope with her attraction towards Sid? Will Sid be able to make her trust people again? Can they ever be together given the shady pasts they have. All these are things to know when you read the novel. It was definitely an interesting read. There were too many things happening to keep the readers engaged. Since, this is the author first book; I appreciate his work and how well he has crafted a complicated story. But there are a few cons that need to be addressed too. First, is there were quite a few typos. Since, I was reading an e copy of the book, I could not mark them all, but there was one such typo that I remember because I spotted it twice in the novel. The term ‘carrier’ was used instead of ‘career’. I found this mistake quite off putting. I think the editor could have done her job better. Secondly, I was not very impressed with the characterization of Mallika/Anushka. The way she met Sid for the first time was interesting, but the way she was later portrayed in the novel seemed unbelievable. The transformation we see in her in the novel seemed too drastic for the readers to believe. Other than that, I found the novel well executed.
If you are looking for a book to read on a train journey, this book will fit the bill. It is reasonably fast, intriguing and engaging.
I was hesitant initially to pick this book after my friend praised this book a lot. I have left reading Indian authors, but picked this book only to judge my friends test. Now I thank him because I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Perhaps one of the best love story I have read after a long time. But the beauty of the book is that there are so many things in this book, many subplots but even then you wont find yourself lost in the sub plots because the story is so beautifully woven around the plot. A must read.
It is very difficult to write a review of a book like this. This book is having so many twists and turns that any line of the story like might work as a spoiler. What I liked about the book: 1) the narrative style of the writer. Exceptionally good. 2) Character development. The writer has developed the characters quite nicely. 3) It is not a simple love story and looks beyond the love of two people.
What I didn't like: 1) there are minor proofreading mistakes, which should have been avoided. Though nothing major, still I had to say something negative :)
You must have read the blurb of the book so I will not be going into the details of the story. As far as the story of the book is concerned the book only deserves 3 star, good but not great, but still I am rating the book 4 stars because there are many small moments in the book which enhances the beauty of the book many folds and I liked them a lot. The writer has done a good job in terms of character development but sadly because of that reason the story has been dragged in the beginning. Still this is one book I will definitely recommend to all my friends.
The best love story I have read after a long time. A racy story, I completed the book in one sitting of 4.5 hours without realizing the time spent and when I completed the book it was 3 am in the morning. This book is having so many twists and turns that it will keep you guessing till the end.
A must must must must read for all who love to read Indian Fiction. Don't miss this one.
It was a great read! Unlike other fiction novels, this had a real life touch to it, which kept me engrossed. The plot is very well woven and presented well. The only negative point, which I felt while reading the book, was too many sub-plots to decipher.
Sorry.....Again??? The title, the cover page and the tag line that went “Can he purge his sins” seemed very different, interesting and raised my curiosity to read the book. So now the question is, did Amit Singh's book live up to the expectations it created in my mind?
