4.75/5-> Sure, it's technically group lore/fanfiction but highkey one of the best books I've read all year. I actually picked this up after reading the webtoon adaptation, which I liked a lot, but this somehow topped it, unexpectedly at that too.

For those unfamiliar with the HYBE lore world, Grey City works as a prequel to Dark Blood: Blood Altar - both of which were published as webnovels first before becoming webtoons. Interestingly, and a different can of worms for another day, there's quite a considerable amount of change between the webnovels and the webtoons, especially for Blood Altar...

This novel centers on the nine who eventually become the Sunshine City pack, whom most Blood Altar readers would be familiar with. Set in the bleak sprawl of the fictional Grey City, the story follows them across different moments in their lives as they struggle to survive, grapple with who they are, and slowly find their way to one another in a world shaped by violence and blood. Although it's more of a character-driven origin story, it's not light on plot by any means, and the balance it strikes between the two makes for a really full and satisfying journey, from beginning to end.

The found family theme here is very much front and centre (which I’m a sucker for), and while the character list is pretty packed, the writing does an impressive job of fleshing each of them out and weaving between perspectives seamlessly without ever feeling confusing or shallow. There were also some surprisingly hard hitting one-liners musing on existentialism, fate, and what it actually means to be human, which was surprising considering, again, this is all just lore for a kpop/jpop group.

The overall plot is nuanced and compelling, and the worldbuilding feels super lived in. Grey City itself feels oppressive, worn down, and real in a way that makes the characters’ choices and bonds hit even harder and as mentioned before, I genuinely felt like I’d gone on a journey by the end of it.

Overall, I’d definitely recommend this regardless of whether you’re familiar with &Team or the Dark Moon universe. It definitely stands on its own as a solid, emotionally resonant read and I hope they decide to do a print version of it one day!
