The Baron’s Demons

Rate this book
This marriage may be her salvation. Or her doom.

Julia Woodrow possesses nothing but a name tainted by her mother’s scandal, so she hasn’t a clue why Gabriel, Baron Arevale, offers to wed her after one chance meeting. However, to escape her abusive father, Julia is prepared to risk anything. Even marriage to this enigmatic stranger. They’ll become acquainted after the wedding, surely?

Except their union brings more questions than answers. Passion burns beneath Gabriel’s cool exterior, igniting Julia’s own desires, yet he seems determined to keep her at arm’s length. Why did he marry her, when he has no use for a wife? Why won’t he speak about his past? And how can he suffer a deadly wound, then wake the next day as though nothing happened?

Deringham, his ancient estate, is straight from a fairytale. A remote castle, nestled in the woods, where the locals tell tales of dark deeds and monsters from times long past.

But the monsters aren’t just tales.

Unnatural creatures haunt the castle after dark, showing a dreadful interest in Julia. A sinister force is stalking her, and the husband she’s falling for knows more than he’ll say.

Grim secrets lie in Deringham, waiting to be unearthed. They could bring Julia undying love—or bury her.

Well, this book took me by surprise.

During the first chapter I was pretty sure that this book was going to be a little immature for me. The dialogue seemed to be something from a scene in Oliver Twist. I kid you not, during the first interaction I was reading dialogue such as "ello, sweet. Wot's the rush" and "not even a 'ow you do?"...honestly at this point I contemplated putting the book down and abandoning my plans to review.

However after persevering through the first few chapters this book really found it's flow and the vibe completely changed. It turned into a historical fantasy with gothic vibes i.e. a perfect read for Halloween season. I enjoyed the romance in this book, but I was actually far more interested in the paranormal/horror aspects. I would absolutely recommend adding this to your October TBR if you are after a spooky read.

The fantasy aspect was unique and held my interest. The story is pretty unique overall. It’s like ‘historical romantasy: The Halloween Special.’ It won’t work for everyone, but it worked for me.
The ending was decidedly not for me though, but that’s more of a personal preference than a criticism. (What can I say- I’m a standalone series girl who wants everything wrapped up in a nice bow.) 3.5 stars.

4/5! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

♱ There is no way I could say no to a book that is described as a historical, Gothic fantasy/romance. This was absolutely perfect for spooky season. It was almost giving a dark, eerie Pride & Prejudice....with a little bit of Haunted Mansion thrown in for me.

♱ This takes place in the 1800s, where we have Julia, a girl who is abused by her father and would do anything to escape him. Including, agreeing to marry a Baron that she runs into on the streets by chance. After their first encounter, he shows up later on at their home, requesting to take Julia's hand in marriage. Desperate to escape the miserable life with her father, she says yes. However, she knows little of the man she has agreed to marry, including the many secrets he hides.

♱ The first half of this book was more Historical Fiction than anything. As we progress through the book, it starts to pick up into the Paranormal Fantasy/Romance aspect of it. There were a few parts that were a little slow to me, but they picked back up fairly quickly.

What I Loved:
Grumpy x Sunshinehe's grumpy!
Gothic settingold London, dark streets, castles, spooky woods, crumbling churches.
Touch her and d!e / Age gap - he's lived for hundreds of years.
Paranormal beings/activitydemons, seeing the dead, ghosts, exorcisms.

♱ The spice was spicing. While it wasn't the center of the story, we do get a few scenes. One thing I love in a book, is when the spice actually goes along with the characters romantic development, and we don't just have spicy scenes being thrown in for no reason. Plot > spice, all day every day. This definitely hit the mark for me.

♱ Overall, I can say I really enjoyed this. Both main and side characters were amazing, the plot was fun to follow, and the Gothic atmosphere was everything. Such a good mix of horror, romance, fantasy and historical vibes. Will definitely be looking out for more from this author!

♱♱ Thanks to NetGalley and Stitching Grey for a chance to read and review this e-arc! ♱♱

This book is like Bridgerton and Tuck Everlasting if they were spookier and people were getting possessed and stalked by demons. It's a historical romance but with many elements of a thriller, which is an unusual combination and I really liked it!

The story follows Julia Woodrow, who lives with her abusive father in 19th century London. She has a chance encounter with the mysterious baron Gabriel, and is shocked when he later turns up at her house to ask for her hand in marriage. She accepts in order to escape her father. Though it's clear that Gabriel is very cold and distant and largely ignores her once they're married at the beginning, tension simmers between them. Julia also notices that things seem... off / strange with Gabriel.

Once they travel to Gabriel's country estate in Derringham, Julia learns a massive truth about Gabriel and horrifying things immediately begin to happen around the castle. I knew something was up with Gabriel, but I gotta say I couldn't figure out what it was. I initially figured he had to be a vampire... but the reality is a LOT more interesting. It's pretty unlike anything I think I've read which always gets some bonus points from me.

Gabriel and Julia's relationship is adorable and evolves as they try to work together to figure out the evil forces that are plaguing the two of them. There was spice but nothing too crazy. The story also gets so eerie at Derringham! Once nighttime hits they have to essentially go on lockdown in the castle and I was so invested and creeped out (I scare easily).

One qualm I had is that Julia is a weaker character - she had little ability to protect herself and the only thing she had to her was that she liked drawing. But honestly, I didn't mind all that much because every once in a while I do love a good damsel in distress trope and she had a girlboss moment at the end.

I also wished there was more focus on the witch. I won't go into too much detail to avoid spoilers, but I think there should've been more information on her, and if / what Gabriel and Arthur were doing to find her in all that time after their run in. Most importantly, was she involved with any of the attacks on Gabriel and Julia? I would expect that if there's a sequel (which there better be after that ending) that this will be addressed.

The book weaves together multiple timelines from Gabriel's perspective, which was fascinating and added so much context to his character and his relationship to Arthur. Arthur is Gabriel's longtime best friend, but they had a serious falling out and over the course of the book the reason why is revealed, and it's a key part of the story. The friendship between of them was so touching and really broke my heart. At one point I was convinced they'd been lovers but alas, no. The author does a fantastic job of connecting the threads of Gabriel and Arthur's past with Julia and her current relationship to Gabriel.

The Baron's Demons is a great spooky read with so many layers to it. Thank you so much to Stitching Grey and NetGalley for providing me a copy of this ARC! 📚

I absolutely devoured this book. It's the best of historical romances with a touch of dark romantic fantasy. The slow burn is amazing and what I live with marriage of convenience stories. The characters are complex, Julia with her horrible background and then the MMC with his mysterious presence. It is a fast paced story with things happening but not action packed as someone going on a quest or adventure. It's full of hidden secrets, possessive MMC, a grumpy/sunshine style match. It's a great romance read for the spooky season and would recommend to those who love fantasy and historical romances.

Thank you NetGalley and stitching grey press for the opportunity to read this e-arc.

First and foremost, I feel the need to shout say that this is my all time favourite ARC that I EVER received and had the pleasure to read!

Huge thanks to BookSirens and Erin Elle and everyone else who made it possible for me to discover and get an early access to this book! I LOVED it, so much so that I’m struggling to find proper words to express it (but I’ll certainly try my best!)

Obligatorily: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The thing about this book was that I just could NOT stop reading it. Literally; I read it in like two days. I just couldn’t for the life of me put my phone down. The writing style was beautiful, seemingly effortlessly flowing, like the author was painting a picture with words before my eyes. The dialogues were spot on. And although I’m usually not a huge fan of dual POV in romance novels, here I didn’t mind it in the slightest. Quite the opposite, the POVs switched at just the right times to keep the tension growing and to keep the plot going, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The suspense was masterfully built, with just enough hints dropped to give me a vague idea of what was truly at play, but still keeping me on the edge of my seat—desperately wanting to find out what’s next, but also terrified that the ending might not be happy after all.

The romance was JUST how I like it: VERY slow burn. It also featured my actual favourite trope: marriage of convenience, where neither party expects to fall in love with the other. Spoiler: of course they do. But there was much more I liked about it than the mere trope. Both Julia and Gabriel grew so dear to my heart—I got truly invested into their story and both their characters’ growth. I loved seeing Julia slowly heal from her trauma, and learn to proudly take up her place in the world. Her growth felt realistic to me; because healing is never linear nor perfect, and there wasn’t a deus-ex-machina magic fix; she learned to face her fears and work through them—with Gabriel there to help her. But I also loved that Gabriel wasn’t the perfect prince-on the-white-horse either, that he too had his faults and quirks and space to grow towards the end of the novel. They made such an amazing, adorable couple, and seeing them both first pine, and then slowly fall for each other was more than worth it.

(also, a quick shoutout to Mirna and Kinson, the cats, because whenever I felt things couldn’t get even more adorable: enter those two!)

The only downside to this book that I can think of is the fact the title is kind of misleading (despite the fact it couldn’t be more literal lmao)—I just feel like it doesn’t properly convey the fact that this is a pretty amazing fantasy novel, as well as a historical romance. If going by the title alone, I doubt I would’ve picked it up, because I would’ve thought it was an overly steamy, slightly uncomfortable romance. And it’s so far from and so much more than that!

I have to say, I feel like there is potential for a sequel here, what with that last bit of information Gabriel uncovered and Julia’s new… let’s call it skill. If not a full on sequel, then at least a teeny tiny little novella just to see those two again (and perhaps for them to finally find that witch)? Pretty please?🥹

This is an eerie historical fantasy with a Victorian setting and gothic supernatural undertones to craft a haunting, romantic story. Julia, with her bleak family life, soon has a mysterious new husband and finds herself swept into a life far darker—and stranger—than she could have imagined. Gabriel is a puzzle of secrets and unspoken intentions, leaving Julia both captivated and uncertain. The dynamic between them is intriguing, filled with simmering tension and growing affection that was fun to watch.

Like any gothic story worth its salt, there are unsettling supernatural undercurrents: demons, ghosts, and some magic and aspects of mind control weave through the story to create an atmospheric vibe that is meandering and compelling. Julia’s struggles to navigate her unfamiliar new home and her intrigue over Gabriel’s mysterious motives pull readers deeper into the story. Gabriel’s bittersweet friendship with Arthur adds another interesting layer to the story, underscoring themes of loyalty and loss.

While Julia’s passivity might be frustrating for readers expecting a headstrong heroine, it actually works well within the story’s tone and setting, offering a refreshing shift from more action-driven leads. However, a few more moments where Julia takes charge could have added depth to her character arc. That said, the cliffhanger hints at more secrets to come, leaving the door open for a continuation that could explore her growth further.

For fans of gothic romance and historical fantasy with a sinister edge, this is a unique, atmospheric read that balances intrigue, supernatural elements, and a compelling romance.

Thanks so much to the author for the complimentary copy! This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.

This was a spooky and whimsical historical (Victorian era to be exact) fantasy. And it was really fun!

Julia gets married to a baron to avoid having to stay with her turd of a father, but her new husband isn't what she thought he's be. The baron leaves Julia alone, like COMPLETELY alone. And she realizes some interesting things about the baron, his castle (I love a good castle) and his staff...

Although I've seen most other reviews giving away some information (that is probably predictable), I don't want to give away what is so "strange" about Julia's new husband, I think finding that out alongside Julia was part of the fun, even if you saw it coming. So this review may seem really vague and short because I hate spoilers and would hate to do that to someone. But it is a fantasy novel...so, you can very likely guess what's going on there.

There is some mystery within this book as well (and that's always so fun). And it leaves off on a bit of a cliffhanger, so I am very excited to continue reading this series.

And this is definitely a slow-burn (I am always a big fan of a good slow-burn).

Thanks to NetGalley for the e-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!

Interesting plot and likeable main characters especially Julia - some of the supporting characters add great colour and I’d love to know some of their back stories but overall here I found the action was drawn out too much and portions dragged. I think structuring some of the events in Deringham in particular would have helped keep pace and the plot moving along.

Even at the end when you think there was a resolution there was still more and then more. To me it felt off

However as a book and story it is very atmospheric and that really adds to the spookier vibe of the story - great world building. Switching between timelines worked well but again it also added significantly to the length of the book.

Interested to see where Gabriel and Julia go next…

For full transparency I received a copy of this book as an ARC from booksirens.

This was an interesting read.

It started great. Got a bit dull and then picked up again. I almost gave up on it during the dull part but I'm glad I stuck to it.

It has been the perfect October read with the right amount of horror/suspense and romance. My favorite things and perfect for #spookyseason.

I was not expecting a lot of what happened and I'm so happy.

Gabriel and Julia are perfection. The marriage of convenience to watching them fall in love kept me up late into the night to find out what happens next. I overslept one morning due to this and my kids almost missed the bus. I don't regret anything.

Can't wait for book 2!

Our our heroine stars out this book deeply traumatized by long-term physical abuse from her father. She’s jumpy and overly placating.
Our Hero’s lack of understanding of her trauma and how she reacts because of it causes misunderstandings. As the Couple grows together a marriage of convenience turns into a true romance and both gain healing and happiness from it.
The gothic fantasy plot seemed like it had a really interesting premise, and it started well, but it kind of fizzled out at the end. I was disappointed. Overall this book was okay, it just fell a little flat for me.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing this ARC. All opinions are my own.

This story was not quite what I was expecting. Based on the description I was expecting it to be a lot creepier. But there were many times where it felt like I was reading a historical romance and it was easy to forget that there was also a fantasy element.
The writing flowed really nicely and I really appreciated this author’s portrayal of trauma. At one point it even brought me to tears.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first half, there was a lot of mystery. Unfortunately I found the reveals to be a bit underwhelming. Somehow both the romance and the fantasy elements felt like subplots with no real main plot. I did find the story started to drag towards the end, however the epilogue did spark some intrigue for the sequel.
While it was enjoyable for the most part, this book felt a bit dragged out for the sake of it being a series. I feel as though I would need to read the whole series in order to get more out of this first book because on it’s own I found it to be lacking.

The Baron’s Demons by Erin Elle

"An abyss loomed at the brink of consciousness. Someplace dark, but peaceful. She wanted to fall into it. To escape this horrible, cold shadow. The shadow would not let her."

Julia Woodrow, desperate to escape her abusive father, agrees to marry the enigmatic Baron Gabriel Arevale after a single chance meeting. But as she begins her new life in his secluded, mysterious estate, Julia discovers that the baron—and Deringham—harbour dark secrets that could either save her or lead to her doom.

A deliciously dark tale that weaves together romance and horror, The Baron's Demons captivates from the first page with its blend of Gothic atmosphere, tantalising secrets, and slow-burning passion.
From the start, the angst between Julia and Gabriel is palpable, a constant, simmering tension that runs through the entire novel. Their marriage begins as a necessity, but the emotional complexity between them quickly takes centre stage. Both characters want to protect each other, yet there is a lingering fear of getting too close. This push and pull, with Gabriel’s reluctance to reveal too much and Julia’s confusion and growing feelings, is masterfully handled. It creates a powerful undercurrent of desire that only deepens as the story unfolds. The spice in the book is just as impressive, woven naturally into the plot and serving to enhance their connection without feeling forced. Those scenes were as emotionally intense as they were physically charged, making the romance feel real and raw.
I loved the dynamic between the two main characters. Julia is soft but enduring, a heroine shaped by hardship but not broken by it. Her strength comes from her ability to persevere, even when she’s thrust into a world filled with uncertainty and danger. Gabriel, on the other hand, is the epitome of the protective male lead, but he’s far from one-dimensional. His past weighs heavily on him, and while he’s deeply protective of Julia, there’s a vulnerability that gradually comes to light. The balance between them, with her quiet resilience and his fierce guardianship, really worked for me. Together, they anchor the story emotionally, while their secrets and shared challenges drive the tension forward.
The flashbacks were another standout element, gradually revealing the key pieces of Gabriel’s mysterious past. I appreciated how the book used these moments to fill in gaps without ever disrupting the main storyline. These glimpses into the past not only enriched the plot but added depth to both Gabriel and Julia’s characters. These revelations were paced like breadcrumbs, giving the reader enough to maintain the intrigue while holding back just enough to keep us guessing.
What surprised me most about The Baron's Demons was how it managed to balance a truly dark narrative with a sense of comfort. For a story filled with supernatural creatures, grim secrets, and a dangerous estate, there was something almost cozy about the way it was told. Deringham, Gabriel’s castle, is as much a character as the people in the story—isolated, eerie, yet somehow enchanting. The setting feels like something out of a fairytale gone wrong, with an ever-present sense of menace lurking just beneath the surface. And yet, amid the shadows, there’s warmth, especially in the way Julia and Gabriel’s relationship develops. Their bond provides a much-needed light in the darkness, making the story feel both chilling and strangely heartwarming.
The novel also does a fantastic job blending genres. While it leans heavily into gothic romance, the paranormal elements add a thrilling layer of danger. The monsters that stalk the halls of Deringham are not merely figures of legend, but real, terrifying threats that force Julia to confront much more than just her new husband’s secrets. This infusion of dark fantasy gives the book an added dimension, making it not just a romance but a suspenseful, almost horror-tinged tale. At the same time, it retains all the hallmarks of a satisfying romance novel—the slow-burn tension, the emotional depth, and the ultimate reward of love hard-won.
Ultimately, The Baron's Demons feels like the perfect mix for anyone who enjoys a blend of historical romance and dark fantasy. The story is fast-paced without feeling rushed, and while it keeps the reader on their toes with unexpected twists and turns, it also offers a deeply satisfying emotional journey. The characters’ growth, especially Julia’s coming into her own, is wonderfully done. And while the story delves into dark themes—abuse, isolation, supernatural threats—it handles them with care and nuance, never sacrificing character development for the sake of shock value.
For me, this book hit so many right notes. It’s a historical romance with a touch of dark romantic fantasy, perfect for readers looking for something atmospheric and gripping. Whether you're drawn in by the Gothic setting, the tortured romance, or the spooky undertones, The Baron's Demons is an excellent read for those craving a love story wrapped in mystery and danger. Highly recommended for the autumn months, when the nights are long, and you’re in the mood for something a little more haunting.

Jane Eyre but with more spice and more dark magic? Yes please! That’s what the marketing copy for Erin Elle's The Baron’s Demons promised, and that’s what instantly had me sold.

Julia Woodrow is desperate to escape her abusive father’s home, but has little opportunity to do so. She’s lucky when a stranger, Gabriel, Baron of Arevale, asks for her hand in marriage. Though she knows nothing about him, surely she’ll have a better life with him. However, Gabriel comes with many secrets and a long, dark past. As he and Julia gradually become closer, she’ll have to find out the truth about him and battle his demons with him.

Tropes & Narrative Devices:
- Marriage of convenience
- Slow burn romance
- Age gap (seriously!)
- Dual timeline
- Third-person POV (Gabriel and Julia)

What I Liked:
- Escaping a bad life. Content warnings for domestic abuse, which Julia unfortunately has been subjected to by her father for years. He’s a horrid man, and I don’t blame her for taking any opportunity to get out of his house. Due to this, Julia is timid and afraid of angering anyone, including her new husband, Gabriel. I appreciate how Julia’s perspective continues to be present throughout the book, even after she and Gabriel have gained more trust. It’s a journey to overcome such abuse, and this was portrayed with care.
- Mystery surrounding Gabriel. I won’t spoil it for you, but Gabriel has quite the past! He and Arthur have been in it together for quite some time, and it was interesting to see their origins and how they’ve kept each other sane throughout.
- Demons and witches. A hunt for a long-lost witch, a pack of demons haunting the house, strange magic affecting two of the main characters… I love the inclusion of magic and supernatural beings here. It makes the Gothic element that much stronger and scarier, and adds to the tension within Gabriel and Julia’s marriage.
- Slow burn romance. It takes quite some time for Julia and Gabriel to open up to each other, but once they do, the connection is enchanting. They’re such different characters, and I like seeing how they balance each other out and find solace in one another.
- The cats! I love Mirna and Kinson and that Gabriel has such a soft spot for them. Cat daddy!
- The authentic writing. This book is set in 1873 and draws from the Gothic greats of that century. I really enjoyed that the author wrote the novel in a way which makes it feel like it was actually published in the 1870s. The style, word choice, and more feel authentic, making the setting more immersive.

What Didn’t Work for Me:
- Miles Johnson. I don’t know, unless I misunderstood, his background seems tainted. A plantation-owning family from North Carolina who didn’t fare so well after the American Civil War? No thanks. Thankfully he’s a fairly minor character.

Final Thoughts
The Baron’s Demons went in some unexpected directions and kept me engaged from start to finish. I love the slow burn romance between Gabriel and Julia, but equally I enjoyed the darker aspects with demons and magic. Arthur was one of my favorite characters, troubled as he was, and I’m intrigued by the cliffhanger this book ends on. I look forward to reading the next installment in the Shadows of Deringham series!

I do enjoy a story where a downtrodden character is saved. However, I have some thoughts.

Things I Enjoyed:
I liked Sal. Also the vicar, needed more of them.

The witch, what was going on there? I wanna know more!

I liked the journey of our sad, sheltered, and abused main character learning to trust and being surrounded by (mostly) people interested in supporting and uplifting her.

I also liked that our sad, guarded, stoney love interest went through a similar journey of learning to trust. And that opening up and loving someone, despite knowing that losing them someday is a certainty, that that is still better than living a life avoiding such attachments.

I liked glimpses at the village, and how the local legends evolved over time since the events involving Gabriel and Arthur happened. I wanted to see more of that.

Steamy bits are well written, believable, and lovingly intimate.

Things I didn’t really enjoy:
Arthur, who we barely see in his “normal” state, is far more interesting than Gabriel, the main love interest. I found Gabriel boring. What has he been doing for 800 years? I mean I guess maybe that’s the point? He’s been on the fringes to avoid being hassled?

The Baron’s solution to demons attempting to breach his castle is… invite his friend and his whole family for a visit??

I felt let down by the reveal of what happened to the mother. It didn’t feel as impactful as I wanted it to be, only as another obstacle for Julia and Gabriel to overcome. After everything, I feel like, at the very least, he should have taken her to where she was buried, or discussed the topic of giving her a proper burial.

A lot of the things Julia had to deal with felt brushed aside for her to be concerned about her husband. The trauma of her mother missing, thinking she abandoned her, and finding out she died violently. The YEARS of abuse suffered at the hands of her father. Multiple demon attacks. Shot. Stabbed. POSSESSED. I realise there were usually more pressing matters at hand, but she seemed to just suppress all these mounting traumas.

Many things I felt were unresolved and left me frustrated:
Only receiving the tiniest breadcrumb about the witch they had apparently been chasing for 800 years only being thrown at the very end, in the epilogue nonetheless, and it only being three words.

Julia’s nightmares? There’s a demon inside her? Is that still there? Was that nightmare with her mother actually a demon trying to get her to invite it in?

How did Arthur actually die? Is that powerful demon actually gone?

Wrapping up my thoughts:
So, it was a romance that made an attempt at also being a supernatural thriller I guess? There was a lot of potential in this story and I think many things fell flat. Ultimately the story was about a girl who needed saving and a man who needed to let himself be in love, and that story was told, with some demons thrown in.
Overall I still enjoyed it, and I suppose things have been left unresolved for potentially continuing the story, one I don’t think I’ll be checking in with if that’s the case.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

The Baron's Demons is the first book in the Shadows of Deringham series by Erin. This is a dark and gritty Victorian Gothic romance novel.

I was blown away by this book. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I saw Victorian Gothic and I was sold.

Set primarily in 1873, the story starts with Lady Julia Woodrow. She has grown up with an abusive father and really has never expected any change in her circumstances any time soon. That is until she bumps into Lord Gabriel, the Baron Arevale.

There is a lot going on this book.

On the romance side of things, Julia and Gabriel have rough road to find happiness in their relationship. They have a marriage of convenience and did not know each other when Gabriel proposed marriage. Gabriel doesn't want to get close, while Julia is confused and isolated, just like she had been with her father. These two have a great chemistry but there are a number of complicated matters happening around them.

Gabriel takes Julia to his idyllic castle, located near isolated woods. But there is so much darkness, danger and mystery. The biggest part of the book is a paranormal/fantasy storyline, which has Gabriel exposing some fantastical secrets, and a terrifying danger that threatens both Julia and Gabriel.

The romance part of the book wraps up nicely, leaving Julia and Gabriel in a good spot for their marriage. Gabriel needs the light that Julia brings into his life, and I was satisfied with how they got there. However, there is much more going on - there are some questions I hope will be answered in the next book, first and foremost, is there more to Gabriel's friend Arthur and what happened to him? Can Julia fully integrate into Gabriel's world? What other darkness is out there in the woods? What was the meaning of journal entry Gabriel was reading?

Ugh, so many questions, but I really did love this book.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Thank you Net Galley and Stitching Grey Publishing for this ARC!

This was such a good time! Perfectly spooky, gothic and Victorian vibes for this time of year.

*Also please check trigger warnings*

I read this in basically a sitting - I could not put it down. The writing was so polished and the overall plot captivated me from the first chapter. The world building isn't too complex thankfully and I liked how the different timelines unfolded and merged to neatly support the characters and their journeys. It was action-packed and fast paced which made it all the more easier to read and get lost in this world.

I especially loved and appreciated how Erin Elle wrote about the FMC's background and trauma - it was so raw and visceral my heart literally ached. The themes of friendship and found family was also quite sweet.

About the halfway mark, I had a few reservations and concerns about potential plot holes but I was happily proven wrong. Elle had masterfully woven in these answers throughout the chapters and the story became much more richer and immensely more nuanced, particularly in regards to the complexity of the characters themselves.

The only thing keeping this from a full 5 star reading experience was that I felt the transition from acquaintances to lovers was a bit abrupt and their initial 'lovey' stage was sort of skimmed over. But their love and devotion to one another is undoubtedly clear as the story goes on. Also, I wished there was more about the whole demon/witch lore but I guess this would be covered in the next book. Additionally would have liked to see more antagonistic drama from the ton (or a certain sister lol).

Regardless, it was such an enjoyable read and I'm sure that I'll be thinking about this book for months to come.

Would read again - so excited to see what else Erin Elle publishes (especially the sequel!).

I received this as an ARC.

I read the blurb was instantly intrigued. Since One Dark Window, I’ve been wanting to read more Gothic fantasy and when I spotted this one, I knew I had to read it. The author advertises it as Gothic Gaslamp (Victorian era) meets Penny Dreadful, which sounds like a delightfully perfect mix. For those unaware, Penny Deadfuls were little novellas sold for a penny in the Victorian age, they were basically little horror stories. And I think Erin delivered.

I loved that she went for the Cockney English at the start, which I know some find jarring, but it does place us well within a certain timeframe and indeed quickly establishes the class divide. I really liked her focus on society, manners and etiquette and how it was used throughout, not just in interactions between characters but was certainly also part of both Gabriel’s and Julia’s inner monologues.

I loved the twists and turns, and while I would have loved a little bit more “horror” (says the woman who finds Scream terrifying), I did really enjoy the mystery were part of discovering. I enjoyed the time skips, though I did have to keep a keen eye on those dates!
I particularly found Julia’s reactions interesting because while she’s consistent, she also grows. I cannot say much without spoiling sorry! Abuse and how that lingers is part of this story, and I think Erin dealt with it so nicely and delicately.

I was a little confused by the ending, truth be told, so I did messaged Erin to see if I had sort of guessed it correctly. But while a bit confused, it absolutely did not spoil the ending for me, I just wish I knew others who read it so I could discuss it with them.

This is part of a series, and I’m definitely picking up book 2.

ARC received via BookSirens and I am leaving an honest review voluntarily.

A slow-burn gothic historical fantasy romance? Sign me up! Going into The Baron’s Demons, I had high expectations, and I’m thrilled to say it didn’t disappoint. The pacing was wonderfully done, with a gradual build-up of dread and unease that perfectly complemented the backdrop of a marriage of convenience, dark secrets, and a brooding gothic estate. The story was so intriguing that I didn’t even realize how far I’d read until I paused and noticed I was halfway through—it’s the kind of book that pulls you in and doesn’t let go.

The characters were another highlight. Julia, while fitting the damsel-in-distress archetype, provided a great counterbalance to Gabriel’s intensity. Their romance felt natural and unrushed, unfolding organically alongside the plot. Every moment in the story felt purposeful, and the slow reveal of Gabriel’s backstory was beautifully paced, mirroring Julia’s growing closeness to the Baron.

The supporting characters were just as memorable. Sal, in particular, stood out with their fantastic dynamic with Gabriel—Sal’s no-nonsense attitude brought both levity and depth to the story due to their different social classes. Their interactions were some of my favorite moments.

Where The Baron’s Demons truly excels is in its haunting atmosphere. The blend of demons and magic created an immersive world filled with mystery, tension, danger, and just the right touch of romance.

The book does end on a slight cliffhanger, leaving a few threads untied. While I wish certain aspects had been explored in more depth, this only adds to my anticipation for the next instalment. I’m eager to see what lies ahead for the Baron and Lady Arevale.

SO enjoyed this read!

Julia Woodrow is not happy, and she hasn’t been for a long time. Trapped under the thumb of her father, Alfred Woodrow, she spends the days walking on eggshells and hoping not to spark his ire. Her only friend is Cook, and while the older woman is supportive, Julia just wants out. Julia’s prayers are answered in the form of Baron Gabriel Arevale, who, after a single meeting, offers marriage, safety and protection. She agrees despite knowing next to nothing about the man. What she does eventually learn, however, is nothing she would’ve ever expected. Secrets hide behind every corner of Gabriel’s estate, Deringham, and Julia must find a way to navigate them, and her growing attraction to her husband.

The Baron’s Demons was a great book. I loved Julia right from the first page and was thrilled to see her development over the course of the book. Gabriel, though, I had to warm up to. I understand the lack of details at the beginning was for a ‘mysterious vibe’, but the bouncing around to different times had me re-reading a few chunks more than once. However, I appreciated the slow-burn aspect of the romance, as well as the paranormal parts – I thought the latter gave this book a bit of unique twist. By about half-way through, I was more than fully invested and was doing little more than rooting for Julia and Gabriel and a happy ending. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable read and I would be very interested to see more from this author.

Thank you Voracious Readers and Erin Elle for my copy! I received an ARC of this novel and am voluntarily leaving a review. All above thoughts and opinions are my own.

So this was an okay read. I feel like it should have been more exciting than it was though. Gabriel's paranormal past and everything that happens now was really interesting....but seemed to be lacking something to really pull me in. The romance between Gabriel and Julia didn't exactly take a back seat here, but it was all so very sweet and natural that it too lacked excitement.

Julia lives alone with her abusive father after her mother had disappeared when she was a child. One day Julia finally builds up the courage to run away, but her poor planning has her ending up being harassed by a couple creepy guys in an alley. Fortunately, Gabriel just happens to be there and he saves her from them. Thinking she has made a huge mistake, Julia returns home believing she'll never see the man who saved her again. But she was wrong.

Gabriel realizes immediately who Julia is and wants to save her from her father. A man he has known many years and has never liked. So he proposes a marriage of convenience basically. They shall be wed, but she doesn't have to do any of her "wifely duties" if she doesn't want to. In fact, Gabriel doesn't even want to get too close to her because he has a huge secret of his own.

Despite how vastly different these two are and how huge of a gap in social experience they have, they actually get on quite well. Well, most of the time anyway. So it isn't a surprise that they quickly end up falling for the other for real. But when Gabriel's best friend, Arthur, who has been missing for a very long time shows back up, any days of peace they have will soon be shattered.

See, Gabriel has been cursed with immortality along with Arthur and they have been alive a very long time. What Gabriel didn't realize was just how tired Arthur was of being alive and what ends he would go to to finally die. With Gabriel's love for Julia growing by the day, he's horrified to find out that Arthur is even willing to use her to get what he wants. So a good majority of this book is Gabriel and Julia fighting off the evil forces sent after them, and more than once, fighting just to stay alive. But along the way Julia learns of the truth about her mother and why she really disappeared. In the end some people get what they want, some get a new ability, and others will finally embrace the happiness they have been able to find.

I won't say that this book was a waste of time because it did have a good story line going on. I just wish it was a lot more engaging for me. But I will say that all the paranormal bits from the demons to the witch were great and really worked here.

I have to say I didn't really know where this book would go while reading. But I enjoyed the ride and really appreciate the writing and story telling. It double POV, light on the romance, with an overarching mystery. Would recommend for readers that like a slower story arc as this book is not fast paced. I will be looking forward to the next book in the series

What I liked
- our MCs and their struggles were depicted quite strongly and convincingly
- I absolutely loved that we did not have any obvious storytelling, what I mean is awkward conversations just to inform us of people's relationships "I'm your best friend/brother/mother etc" instead we had organic conversations and had to keep guessing until the background information was revealed and I really appreciated that
- the romance was little but nice and I liked their dynamic
- overall interesting story concept, original as far as I can tell in many aspects, looking forward to learning more about the magic

What I didn't like
- the story arc was not as tightly strung as I would have liked. I didn't really know where this book wanted to go at times and wish we had more foreboding of certain events which is ultimately why I give it 4 stars.

✨book review ✨
the baron’s demons by erin elle
rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
GR rating: 4.08
genre: paranormal romance, historical romance

This book really took me by surprise in the best way possible. (TW: mentions of child abuse)

This paranormal romance takes place in 1800s England and follows our heroine Julia Woodrow as she flees an abusive household by marrying Lord Arevale, a baron with a cool exterior and countless secrets. A passion begins to build between them, but can it survive the demons that haunt the baron’s past?

I was immediately hooked by the gothic romance plug on NetGalley, and I was done. The first part is definitely more of a historical romance and then it shifts to a paranormal romance later down the line. It has that beautiful blend of 🔥 and plot that I crave in my romances.

The author also blends the different elements of the various genres in the second half really well - the historical melds with the spooky effortlessly. I wish it was a bit more consistent in the beginning but it was definitely done well.

The pacing was decent but it was slow for me at the beginning (the first 20%) but then it picks up a tiny bit faster. The characters were also well done which I thoroughly enjoyed!

This is definitely for those who always need spooky season year round (just like me 😉).

Thank you NetGalley and Victory Editing Co-op for the e-ARC!

Do not pass on this read. If you like Gothic thrillers, magic, evil, villains (in many forms), this is the book for you. This is a page turner from beginning to end. A brooding, forbidding, and alluring hero comes into play, Lord Gabriel Arevale. He comes with a remarkably interesting best friend, Arthur Donarson. The two of them have a very long and tangled relationship. Julia Woodrow, begins her journey with Gabriel when he comes to her rescue and the next day offers her marriage. The story grows from there. It develops into an adventure creeping into places of the soul. One of the most chilling, action-packed gothic mysteries I have read. Loved all of it. Julia is exceptional. She is strong, loving, vulnerable, fierce, and full of spirit. Gabriel is an old soul, and he is challenged by this woman, she brings much-needed peace in his life. Gabriel and Arthur have an age-old relationship that binds them together as much as it pulls them apart. I cannot help but feel that there may be another chapter in Gabriels and Julia’s lives. I would willingly read that sequel! A new author has captured my attention. The story and characters were well developed, the book beautifully written. "The scratching ceased, but that sickening feeling remained. A sense of something sinister lurking beyond the door" (198).

There is so many layers to this. There are twists & turns that came out of nowhere! It really kept me on my feet. Definitely a fast paced read, I finished it within a day. The beginning took a bit of time though. It starts with a poor shy heroine that gets offered marriage by a wealthy somewhat stranger keeping a significant secret . Nothing relatively new or adventurous from that but things begin to really start up before they leave London.

"An abyss loomed at the brink go consciousness. Someplace dark, but peaceful. She wanted to fall into it. To escape this horrible, cold shadow.
The shadow would not let her"
(319).

From the second the reader enters Deringham, everything begins to come to life. The work building blossoms and flourishes engulfing the reader in ambience. The prose intertwines as the secret and its components are confronted. Julia starts to develop in a coming-of-age sense and Gabriel finally starts to open up to her. The characters finally step up to the plate. I also didn't expect the suspense part to be as hair-raising as the description let on.

"Having never left the city before, she was quite curious about the countryside and the estate she was now mistress of... And if people would not treat her like some sad, fragile creature..." (122).

Definitely recommend for historical romantasy lovers who are looking for an October suspense read.

I like the book. There are quite a few surprises along the packed in this book. It starts when Julia tries to run away from home because her father is a brut but she is stalked by some attackers. Gabriel notices and saves her and she realizes she doesn't have enough money to run away so she heads home. They cross paths a few more times and long story short he proposes to her. Not a love match but to get her away from her father and offer her protection. She doesn't really understand but why not? It takes a while to find out what their connect really is, things happen and they end up leaving London for Gabriel's estate. Gabriel doesn't have much staff because he is full of secrets. Julia catches feelings and so does Gabriel but he fights it. A bunch of bad stuff happens and we start to learn what connects them. There are alot of twists and turns that kept me turning the pages also many story lines to explore. I think this will be a series and I will definitely read more.

Do you ever long for something that feels as comfy as Pride and Prejudice, yet scratches your itch for a dark fantasy romance at the same time? 🖤

Because same! And I've found it!

This book is the most delicious, steamy, Victorian era slow burn romance with a grumpy/sunshine trope and an occult/supernatural curveball. The character's are all very well written and so easy to fall in love with! The plot, pacing and twists and turns are perfect to keep you hooked in suspense throughout! The spicy scenes are gorgeously written and somehow still completely appropriate for the period. The only complaint that I have is that there's a sneaky little hook right at the end and I'm bothered that I'll have to wait for the next instalment 👀 😂.
I genuinely enjoyed this read and have already added the paperback to my Amazon wishlist! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thankyou @netgalley and @author.erin.elle for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own and based entirely on my reading experience.⚘️

The Baron’s Demons is a Gothic historical romance filled with mystery, suspense, intrigue, and a sweet, gentle heroine, Julia Woodrow who in trying to escape an abusive parent encounters a savior on the streets of London one day. Never thinking to see her rescuer Baron Arevale again she is shocked when he shows up the next day to her home with an offer of a marriage of convenience.
A way out presents itself, does she dare accept?
This was a very intriguing story that holds the reader engaged as they along with Julia explore the puzzle of Gabriel, Baron Arevale along with the trepidation that hovers over his Deringham estate and the rumors that abound of the dark forces that imbue it.
Why did he want her for wife? What secrets does he keep hidden from her.
A spellbinding tale of passions and hidden agendas will come to light in a tale that readers will discover is more than it seems.
Expertly written and wide in imaginative scope this was a story to settle in with for an immersive and thrilling journey.

it's cute. it reminded me a little of bridgerton but less twists and more normal human interaction.

loved the side characters, especially the servants. they were fun.

although it is historical, if the tags and genres on goodreads could be separate, i'd definitely add the contemporary romance tag to it. because concepts like revolutions and bringing about change in societies and modern viewpoints are actually what make up contemporary art.

just a slight tad bit of contemporary romance. just a slight.

to describe the main characters themselves, i can safely call them cute and adorable.

i definitely recommend this read to 14 year olds, and to 11 year olds who find literature boring. maybe the simple romantic plot of this book would get them used to old English usage. minus the explicit scenes of course. i think the author should make a children friendly version of this. would be popular among them.
