Military/political science fiction is a field nourished by the likes of Heinlein, Haldeman and Asimov. An author must tread a high-wire between blood and bureaucracy, expediency and emotion, beating the war drum not too boldly while retaining the human face of politics in a moving narrative. This book is as enjoyable as it is impressive. This is not a fine genre book, rather it is a fine book that happens to be of a particular genre.
Should be re-tagged as political science fiction. The military aspects just served as a vehicle to assist expressing politically correct views.
The military technology and 'battles', what little there was done, wasn't done very well. Author gave us lasers n missiles with lasers having little impact in ship to ship. OK, how about throwing in rail guns or something? Gosh, anything to give us military types something to knaw on. The closet homosexual hero?
Bottom line to me is that overall the book and story was very boring, tedious and author was very repetitive regarding politics. I'm not sure why 2 stars but author went thru a lot to write this.
I picked up this book from a friend who asked me to honestly review it. Well there was not anything in the beginning of this book that caught my attention and made me want to read on. The characters were stereotypical and I found myself not caring that they all might die in the first few chapters. And the whole dazzle beam thing really through me off.
That being said I understand that this author is very talented at writing historical fiction. Perhaps this was a trail run into sci-fi. It did not go well for me.
The book seemed interesting, although jumpy. The shuttle trials part was boring and not much useful in this book. Probably it was intended for the next book in the series.
