Rate this book
Zips is a zebra, a curious one at that. Despite his mum’s warnings, he follows his curiosity across the savannah. After a close brush with a lion and a croc, Zips discovers he’s lost, far from home. What should a youngster do when he’s lost and alone? Zips seeks friends he can trust and uses his wits till he’s reunited, safe and sound, with his mum. This colourful, rhyming picture book has lively pictures of African animals. Zips Goes Wandering can help parents and children discuss safety issues and what to do if they ever get lost or separated.

Zip Goes Wandering is the first book in the Savannah Friends series. I sat down to read this book with my 7yr old daughter and it warmed my heart to see her immediate connection with these fun and vibrant animals. Each page is filled with beautiful and brightly colored Savannah animals, but also a lesson.

Zip a curious Zebra ignores the warnings of his mother and ventures off on his own to investigate his surroundings. He soon realizes that the Savannah is a dangerous and scary place without the protection of his mother. Not remembering his way home he begins to ask his animal friends for help. But have no fear, Zip not only learns a valuable lesson his friends help him find his way home and back to his mother.

I am just so taken with these characters and find the use of them brilliant. They help connect the reader with the understanding of the valuable lesson that is learned. Parents if you are in need a book to help explain what most of use consider to be our worst fear, start with Zip and his Savannah Friends.
