BOOK 1: THE RHYME OF THE MAGPIE Nothing can spoil Jools’s cozy night in. Except maybe a visit from her famous father, Rupert Lanchester. However, Jools doesn’t want to hear about her glamorous yet snooty new stepmum and sends him on his way. Next morning, he’s vanished without a trace. Jools and her father’s new assistant team up to go looking for Rupert. What they find is a dead body! Can Jools unravel this knotty nest of murder and mystery, before the predator swoops again . . . ?
BOOK 2: EMPTY NEST When toxic mold is found at her cozy little cottage, Jools takes a room at rambling old Hoggin Hall, home of her batty but well-meaning boss, Earl Fotheringill. One day, she heads out for a bracing stroll around the orchard — only to stumble on a trail of dead sparrowhawks. Sensing foul play, Jools decides to investigate. Before long, Jools’s busy-bodying turns up a human body — one of her fellow guests! Can she catch the killer before she has her own wings clipped?
BOOK 3: EVERY TRICK IN THE ROOK Life is good for Jools and her beau Michael. Until Jools’s ex-husband is found bludgeoned to death in Hoggin Hall’s deserted summer house — and a witness statement leaves Michael as the prime suspect! It doesn’t take long for the village to turn against him. In a bid to protect Jools, Michael disappears, but now she’s a sitting duck for the real killer. Jools is determined to prove Michael’s innocence. Even if it means putting herself in the flight path of a vicious predator . . .
BOOK 4: FAREWELL, MY CUCKOO Jools only has so much patience. If her boyfriend Michael gets interrupted one more time while trying to propose, she’s going to go cuckoo! But if that wasn’t enough, Jools’s love nest is invaded by Michael’s flighty older sister. Jools throws herself into her work as a distraction — until an unidentified body is found in the churchyard. And Pammy was the last one to see the man alive . . .
USA Today best-selling author Marty Wingate writes The First Edition Library series (Berkley) set in Bath, England, about the curator of a collection of books from the Golden Age of Mystery. Book one, The Bodies in the Library, concerns murder among an Agatha Christie fan-fiction writing group, and in book two, Murder Is a Must (October 2020), an exhibition manager is found dead at the bottom of a spiral staircase. Marty also writes historical fiction: Glamour Girls (Alcove Press, January 2021) follows Spitfire pilot Rosalie Wright through both the physical and emotional dangers of the Second World War. Marty writes two further mystery series: the Potting Shed books (Alibi) feature Pru Parke, a middle-aged American gardener transplanted from Texas to England, and the Birds of a Feather series (Alibi) follows Julia Lanchester, bird lover, who runs a tourist office in a Suffolk village. Marty prefers on-the-ground research whenever possible, and so she and her husband regularly travel to England and Scotland, where she can be found tracing the steps of her characters, stopping for tea and a slice of Victoria sponge in a café, or enjoying a swift half in a pub.
I really enjoyed these books and followed the lives of the various characters with interest, finding the link to birds a novel idea. Mysteries are not my usual genre for reading, but I seem to have happily changed my view.
The books get better as you continue through the series . Lovely scene setting in the Suffolk countryside and a headstrong heroine .Plenty of clues too
If you want to become a member of a lovely estate in England and enjoy the friendships and chatty gossip and help solve a murder mystery, then this book series is just your cup of tea! As an added bonus you will delight in learning so much about the flora and fauna of this wonderful area…but best of all you will love being a bonafide twitcher!
Amazon synopsis: Do you love bird watching? And twisty whodunnits that keep you guessing until the final page? Then meet Julia ‘Jools’ Lanchester. An ornithologist’s daughter with a taste for fine wines and solving mysteries . . .
Don’t miss out on this fabulously cozy new box set. You get **four** wonderfully witty crime mysteries for hours of entertainment.
The 4th book had the same energy and pace as the first book. The characters had definition and growth. It had a nicely thought out murder. It is a cute series. The third book was the least interesting to me. The subject of birds that was carried through the series was a different and interesting spin.
A bit like Donna Andrews, well more than a bit, in addition to the bird themed, the love interest is named Michael and there's an older relative who's a popular scientist...but still fun.
I found these 4 books by Marty Wingate compulsive reading and I'm really sorry I have come to the end. I hope there may be more in the pipeline. Complete escapism...thank you Marty.
Enjoyed this series -- Characters were developed in a believable manner. Author provided the reader with immersive experience in village life -- would love to wander around the Earls estate !
