Lips of an Angel

Rate this book
There’s only one cure for greed, pride, lust, sloth, gluttony, wrath, and envy. Too bad it died when it was fifteen years old.

Living in Sin City, Raleigh Jenkins knows something about those seven little deadlies, but what he doesn’t know is that they all have one thing in they’re keeping an eye on him. High on as much liquor and sex as his body can handle, he’ll need an Angel to bring him back down to Earth. Enter his best friend who’s been in love with him since the sixth grade. But when an unspeakable accident steals his voice, can a silent Angel find a way to tell the man he loves how he feels—before it’s too late?

As the two men get older and grow closer, one thing is they can’t survive without each other. It’ll take more than words to save the sinner, but luckily for him, that’s exactly what the lips of this Angel offer.

Lips of an Angel is set in the Neon Moonlight universe, but can be enjoyed as a standalone.

I thought the plot of this was really interesting. Angel has been crushing on his best friend Raleigh since they met at school. Raleigh was Angel’s protector but after a car accident where Angel dies and becomes a literal angel, he in turn becomes Raleigh’s protector as well. They would do literally anything for each other.

I wish we actually saw more of them together, there were more scenes of Raleigh being with others. Not going to lie, it kind of stung to read some of the those scenes, especially the Ryder one since they’re all so close.

Eli was an absolute sweetheart, I wouldn’t have blamed him if he had went off on them when he figured out that they had slept together and that Angel was only settling for him sine he couldn’t have Raleigh. If it weren’t for Eli, I don’t think these two would have ever confessed their feelings towards one another.

I would have also liked to a little deeper dive into the whole angel thing, some things were just glossed over. Like how the hell did Angel figure out he could tamper with the security footage?

Overall, it was a quick, easy, and enjoyable read.

ARC REVIEW:

If you know me, you know I’m a sucker for best friends-to-lovers especially when one of them has been secretly pining for years. This story gave me everything I love and more.

Angel and Raleigh have been best friends since middle school. But after a devastating accident in high school, Angel becomes non-verbal and learns to communicate through ASL. That moment changes everything, deepening their bond in a way that goes beyond words. Since then, they’ve been each other’s safe place, their connection growing stronger through the years.

Now in their late 20s, they live together and co-own a Halloween-themed bar (which is such a fun and cozy setting!). What made this story hit even harder was the quiet yearning woven into every moment. Angel has been in love with Raleigh for years, carrying those feelings in silence. Raleigh, on the surface, seems more carefree and casual but his devotion to Angel runs deep. Their relationship is built on years of quiet understanding, comfort, and unspoken love.

What really stood out to me was how unique this story felt. Yes, Angel is literally an angel, but that magical twist never overpowers the emotional core. It just adds another layer to his quiet, otherworldly presence and makes his bond with Raleigh feel even more fated.

This was a beautifully soft, low-angst romance full of heart. It’s about healing, deep love, and the quiet moments that mean everything. I absolutely adored it, and I already know I’ll be reading more from this author.

Okay but I loved this 🥹

Angel and Raleigh have been best friends since the sixth grade, and when a tragic accident happens in high school it leaves scars for them both. This takes place many years later as both of them are in their late 20s, living together and owning a Halloween bar together.

Angel has been in love with Raleigh since they were teenagers, but has never acted on or spoke about his feelings. After an accident in high school results in Angel being non-verbal, he definitely attaches himself to Raleigh even more. This follows them into adulthood. Raleigh is equally as codependent, and very protective over Angel. Raleigh is a very go with the flow, fun for the night type of guy, but his one constant has always been Angel. Their dynamic was very interesting but it just worked.

This story was extremely unique and not like anything I have read before. Angel being a literal angel was definitely a highlight, but it didn’t completely overshadow the story. There’s also not tons of magic and/or religious or fantasy aspects so keep that in mind going into the book. For me it was another aspect of Angel that solidified that him and Raleigh truly belonged together.

This was an entertaining low angst read with some whimsical elements and a great love. I absolutely ate it up!

These boys absolutely have my heart. Through all their trauma, they were able to overcome and grow into strong, capable, and loving men. I love their chemistry, the seamless paranormal additions, and how the book was divided into seven parts for the seven deadly sins. Don't even get me started on the dichotomy of the healthiest communication I've witnessed and how absolutely clueless both Raleigh and Angel were about each other's (and their own) feelings.

I'm obsessed! I only wish I had more from their story.

We first met Angel and Raleigh in Ryder's book: The Vampire's Kiss, and since then I was curious to read their story. It's finally here and I was excited to delve in. Their journey wasn't straightforward, that's for sure. Raleigh kind of annoyed me for at least 50% of the book, but in the end I understand why he was the way he was. At times I just wanted to knock their heads together and make them talk about the topics they were avoiding.
It was interesting to find out how Angel became an angel. And since they were childhood best friends, it was interesting to get little glimpses into their history and teenage years. I loved their friendship and how they were there for each other for years and years.
This wasn't angsty per se, but it did have me on the edge of my seat and turning the pages to see what happens next and when will Raleigh realize what his feelings are. This was a quick and easy read and I felt like the epilogue was a great way to end Angel and Raleigh's story.

An interesting best friends to lovers story with and Angel and his savior.

This was a really cool premise. I loved the Angel being an angel plot. It's such a cool idea. There was some serious trauma these two had to overcome to be together despite years of friendship. Also Eli is the absolute best. He deserved all the good for being such a great guy.

The only reason I'm rating this is because even though I wanted to put it down BADLY. I couldn't.
Also, the representation of selective mutism and ASL.
But goodness this book was cheating and fucked up ways of handling things.

The ARC was provided me by the author

This book is set in the author's Neon Moonlight universe, which I know nothing about, because this is my first book by Rae Simmons.
In principle, it can be read as a standalone – I don't dispute this, but I felt that I was missing some background information.

Raleigh, an extrovert who really enjoys life, has been the protector and best friend of the quiet Angel since adolescence. When an accident occurs , as a result, Angel loses his voice (and almost loses his life, too), he is there for him, supports him in everything, and the selfless love that connects them is enviable. Protective Raleigh to everyone! It was really great to see how close they are, even as they are approaching their thirties .

From the beginning, I found it strange that Angel, although he has been in love with Raleigh for as long as he has known him, is in a relationship with someone else.

The twist is that Angel is an angel in the strict sense of the word, even though he was not born that way. I loved the parts where we his wings, and the "tattoos" are very unique, I liked them!

The only thing I didn't understand (this is probably my fault, not the author's) is the part of the story that made me interested to the book. The Seven Deadly Sins. I couldn't even recognised most of them in the plot, if there wasn't a separate page dedicated to them. I liked the idea, but somehow I didn't expect this execution.

The content of the epilogue surprised me, but it was nice. I think the story would have been complete even without it.

Overall, this is a really good book if you're looking for a little relaxation. The writing style is smooth, and the novel is ~250 pages, so it's not long. There's a little fantasy in it, but the focus is on the relationship between the two main characters – this is a nice 'best friends to lovers' story –, not on the fact that Angel is actually an angel. That's a given, it provides the basis.
I liked this book, it kept my interest throughout, and I finished it very quickly. I felt it was quite short, it could have been more detailed in some places, but I'm really happy with the experience.

I read the physical book. Because I'm old fashion and like to smell the paper.
It doesn't feel quite the same to hide behind a reading mashine than it is to be able to bend the page and read shyly over the rim of the cover (yes, I'm weird).

This book was cute! The world was interesting. I just, I was surprised to see that it seems to be actual magic in play. But that is entirely my fault, because apperantly this is part of a series xD
Don't need to read in order though, it seems like. I enjoyed this one all by it self!
And don't get me wrong! The magic got me look closer at the other books. So nr 1 in this series in now in my TBR.

The reason the book gets 4 stars is because I got confused sometimes. When reading a chapter there was suddenly flashbacks, which did fit for the story and where they appeared, not get me wrong - it just took me by surprise because there was no indication before you read on and suddenly "when I was fifteen" and then I went AHA! Now it makes sense.

Angel and Raleigh. Raleigh, Raleigh, Raleigh... I feel like there's more to him. He takes care of Angel after an accident that has taken his voice (he suffers from selective mutism after an accident that is vital to why Angel is having anxiety).
But in a sense, Angel takes care of Raleigh the sinner too (read the book ;)).
I'm wondering if Raleigh is suffering some form of survivals guilt. But it isn't mentioned. It just, when reading his side of things. That is what I'm wondering about.

Eli was such a sweatheart. Angel, I'm sorry bud, but in a way you did not deserve that man. And I truly hope Eli will find true love for himself.
But also, I don't think Angel and Raleigh would have confessed their love if it wasn't for Eli.

I do have unanswered questions though. Because of who Angel truly is, was someone actually following him? Stalking him? Or was it really his paranoia?
This bothers me a little because of the circomstanses.

Either way, I enjoyed the book. I read it in a few hours, so that should count for something.

Where to start with this book?! It drew me in right from the start and I’d like to state right now that the blurb did not do it justice.

So we have Angel and Raleigh who live and work together at a gothic/Halloween themed bar that they co-own. It’s clear right from the start that Angel is clearly in love with his bestie Raleigh and depends on him for comfort. While the two couldn’t be closer Raleigh seems to have no idea how Angel feels about him.

So far this sounds like a standard best friends to lovers story but you would be wrong because Angel died in a terrible accident when they were teens and an Angel paramedic brought him back to life also as an Angel. Since the night of the accident Angel has been non-verbal and communicates via ASL and has deep anxiety and terrible nightmares.
There are hints throughout the story that he may in fact be Raleigh’s guardian angel but it is never stated openly.

‘The only thing that broke through the seven deadly sins was the gift of a new heart. One who acted in accordance with a love as pure as God’s. In other words: an angel.’

This book is part of the Neon Moonlight universe and acts as sort of a prequel to ‘The Vampires Kiss’ which features Ryder’s story (an excellent side charter in this book). I imagine this gives some extra context to Ryders story but, I did find myself wondering if I would’ve understood the lore of this world better if I had read these before?
So while this book is listed as an interconnected standalone I wonder if reading the others first may provide more context. Oh no, is that a flimsy excuse to read the rest of the series I hear?! What a shame 🤣

It was really beautiful to watch these two finally admit their feelings to each other even if (like Ryder) I found myself wanting to shake Raleigh just to make him see what was right in front of him!

“He’s in love with you, you giant, tattooed buffoon!”

And to see Angel finally admit what happened to him and show Raleigh his wings and his powers.
I would love to see more from these two in the future. To see how Angel progresses in using/controlling his powers and to see more of Raleigh’s love for him

🌶🌶🌶.5

Please check the CWs before heading into this one. It's not super dark but we do have some heavy topics.

So this is my first book by Rae and I was really intrigued by the fact that one if the MCs was an Angel. I will say though I'm not sure that it plays to much into the full story/plot except for one main part (which I will not spoil), but it also doesn't take anything away. Big note is if your looking for a full on PNR with angels and maybe magic and all that you won't get that with this one. This is really just a deep Friends to Lovers story. Also this is a slow burn between the 2 MMCs...there are scenes through the book though where they are not together.

Raleigh and Angel have been best friends since 6th grade when Raleigh stood up to some bullies for Angel. They were both involved in a severe accident where Raleigh almost lost Angel and since that day they have been pretty much inseparable. The accident also left Angel with selective mutism. Angel and Raleigh now own a bar together in Vegas where Raleigh is living a hedonistic life at this point, and it's starting to catch up to him. Angel has sort of had to sit by and watch this all play out but has been the solid figure in Raleigh's life. We have a ton of miscommunication/lack of communication going on with both guys and not just because Angel doesn't speak. There were twists and turns all over the place with this one I was doing cheers but then face palms these guys took one step forward but then JUMPED 3 back I was shaking my kindle at some points. It all does work out in the end and the guys get their adorable HEA. So I would definitely recommend this if your a fan of Friends to Lovers that have to work to get to the Lovers part

This was my first read by Rae, and I was drawn in almost immediately this is a heartfelt, slow-burn Friends to Lovers tale. There are moments when the two main characters aren't together, but those separations only add depth to their eventual connection.

Raleigh and Angel’s friendship began in sixth grade, when Raleigh courageously stood up to bullies on Angel's behalf. The two endured a life-altering accident together, one that almost claimed Angel’s life and left him with selective mutism. Ever since that moment, their connection has only deepened, and they’ve been inseparable.

In Vegas, Angel and Raleigh now run a bar together, but Raleigh’s out-of-control lifestyle is starting to catch up with him. While Raleigh dives deeper into his hedonistic ways, Angel remains the rock in his life, silently supporting him. The tension between them builds not just from Angel’s mutism, but from a pattern of poor communication that both of them are guilty of. Neither one knows how to break the silence that’s keeping them from what they both need.

This book had me all over the place! There were so many moments where I was cheering for them, only to watch them take three steps back right after. But don't worry, it all works out in the end, and they get their sweet, well-earned happy ending.

10/10 - 5 Star Recommend!

Soft, sweet, and full of quiet longing—Lips of an Angel was a beautifully unique take on friends-to-lovers.

Ever since meeting Angel and Raleigh in The Vampire’s Kiss, I was curious about their story—and it did not disappoint. Childhood best friends turned roommates and co-owners of a Halloween-themed bar (which, yes, is as fun and cosy as it sounds), their connection is deep, emotional, and layered with years of shared history.

After a tragic accident in high school left Angel non-verbal, the bond between them only grew stronger. Angel communicates through ASL and has silently loved Raleigh for years. Raleigh, for all his “go-with-the-flow” energy, is fiercely protective of Angel—though he takes way too long to figure out his feelings. Still, once things start to click, it’s all worth it.

The angelic twist adds a quiet, magical undertone without overwhelming the story—it just makes Angel feel even more otherworldly and destined for Raleigh. And while it’s not packed with fantasy or heavy angst, the emotional weight still hits hard, especially through their unspoken love and the safety they find in each other.

This is a soft, low-angst romance full of heart, healing, and beautiful moments of connection. It’s unique, heartfelt, and quietly powerful. I absolutely devoured it and can’t wait to read more from Rae Simmons.

If you have read The Vampire Kiss, you would have come across Raleigh and Angel, Ryder's old bosses. Owners of the Devil's Hopyard and have been best friends forever.
The moment I was introduced to Angel and Raleigh I wanted to know more. Hearing what they both went through at a young age, how that fatal night causes Angel to have selective mutism and only communicate in sign, tightened their bond they had for each other. Now owning the bar, how successful they were in everything except in relationships. I wanted to learn everything about them.
I loved the unique idea of revolving this story around the seven deadly sin. Watching Angel looking after Raleigh in his own secretive way, and choosing not to tell Raleigh that he has always loved him. Seeing Raleigh be there for Angel, taking care of Angel. I so loved these two. With everything that went on it was low angst and I liked that as I could throw myself into following their relationship.
And then Elijah, sweet sweet Elijah please tell me he will have his own story. From the moment he walked into the bedroom and the speech he gave Angel it was so emotional.
This story was beautifully written and I found myself not wanting it to end, I could read more of Angel and Raleigh and that epilogue, the best

This is a fairly new to me author and I really enjoyed this book. It is set in the Neon Moonlight universe and I was able to enjoy it without having read the previous series. This is the story of Raleigh and Angel. The two men have been best friends since they were twelve. They own and run a bar and live together. Angel has been in love with Raleigh for years. But he is afraid to do anything about it in case it ruins their friendship. He was also changed in the car crash that killed their four other friends. So has secrets to hide as well. Since the crash, Angel only communicates through ASL. Good thing Raleigh is skilled at it. Raleigh is a constant party and good time man. Good thing he has Angel to help protect him from the seven deadly sins that surround him. Both can't imagine living without the other. It is only when Raleigh realizes that love he feels for Angel is a forever kind of love, not a best friend kind of love; that things change. This is their story. The book is written well and is easy to read. I really enjoyed watching their relationship grow. I received a complementary advanced review copy of this book from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review. I really enjoyed this book.

Angel and Raleigh have been best friends since they were 12. When they are teenagers, they are in a car accident where they are the sole survivors, and 4 of their friends don't make it. In the 15 years since the accident, Angel has not spoken a single word and uses ASL to communicate. Angel has been in love with Raleigh since they were kids. Angel is calm and grounded in stark contrast to Raleigh's always up for a good time, party boy ways. The only constant commitment in Raleigh's life is Angel and the Halloween bar they own together in Sin City. But Angel has a secret (in addition to being in love with his best friend) that no one knows. As Raleigh faces and is tempted by the 7 deadly sins: Greed, Pride, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Wrath, and Sloth, he gives into temptation at every turn. Is Angel and his secret enough to save Raleigh from himself?

The bond these two men share is incredible. Their love for each other outweighs everything else going on in their lives. This is a beautiful and sexy story with hints of the paranormal/other worldly elements sprinkled in. Absolutely stunning!

I previously read a book by Rae and instantly loved it so I knew I had to read more of this author. I am so happy that I did! While best friends to lovers is not usually a trope I go for, this was perfect. As many others have said, this story was unique and not something I’ve read before. I was very impressed with the storyline!

I loved the chemistry between the two and the pining that Angel did for years over Raleigh. The two have to work for their HEA because Raleigh did not see this at first, however, it was well worth it! If you love best friends to lovers trope, you will definitely love this. I also liked the aspect of ASL being used and incorporating that and anxiety into the story without it being a main focus. It always makes me smile when books have a friend or loved one learn ASL for someone that they love.

This is a low angst read with romance and an angelic twist (literally). If you’re into low angst, paranormal, best friends to lovers, I highly recommend the book!

Angel & Raleigh
This was such a an intense and incredible story! Since the blurb is short enough not to give anything away, and I haven't yet read any of the other stories in the Neon Moonlight universe, I was walking in mostly blind and was absolutely blown away by the story.

Angel & Raleigh have been the best of friends and thick as thieves for almost 20 years. An accident when they were teens changed both their lives in different but meaningful ways.

It was an interesting take to portray each of the 7 deadly sins as pieces of the story. It was very creative and entertaining. I might have caught the references without the section headlines, but it made it fun to figure out what I was reading, and to perhaps guess what/which sin came next.

Lips of an Angel was a great & very well-written story! I was enthralled from the first moment, and became immediately invested in the relationship between Raleigh & Angel, even though Angel was still with Eli throughout most of the book.

**Eli is a pure soul who deserves so much more than what he got in this book. Hopefully he will find the man of his dreams soon enough. I don't know if he'll get his own story in Seattle, but I like to imagine that he'll find his love.

I received an authorized copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.

Angel and Raleigh I honestly don’t know how I feel about the two. Angel was utter perfection and the way he loved Raleigh was so endearing. However Raleigh left little to be desired for me. He neglected angel he allowed his hookup to treat him badly and was none the wiser and he constantly lied to him and slept around with other people but expected angel to always be there and his. I was upset I wanted angel to move on to find happiness elsewhere. I loved when angel finally opened up to Raleigh and they got together and we could see how much love the commitment phobe railegh actually had for angel I lived the possessiveness but I have strong mixed feelings for this book. However I did start with Stetson by Rae Simmons and I honestly loved that world so much I’ll love whatever she writes even if the characters drive me crazy lol

I really feel like the breakup with Eli came way too easy, and it should’ve been harder. After everything Eli was the one to call it off and do the work, and there seemed to be no consequences for angel or Raleigh. I actually didn’t like these two as people. And their communication sucked, and after everything, it doesn’t make sense to me that it was that hard. I think the whole thing should’ve been way messier instead of denial then an easy breakup.

And the paranormal aspects seemed really sporadic and almost forced. There’s hardly any world building there, no explanations as to how angel knows anything and no real purpose other than saving him fifteen years ago. Had the angel thing not been a part of this book it could basically have not changed anything. I think the setup could have been really interesting and unique but these elements just weren’t explored enough.

Oh, I loved this story so much!
I suffered with Angel through every single moment of it (yes, I know it seems contrary, but I actually liked suffering through it!). It takes Angel and Raleigh forever to get where they need to be and the journey is everything but easy, but when they finally do, it’s everything!
Best friends for most of their lives, they share everything, or so it seems at the beginning, it is quite apparent that Angel has two pretty big secrets he keeps from everyone, even from Raleigh.
There were moments I wanted to scream… at Angel, at Raleigh (and Eli and Billie and more…) because I got so frustrated at how things were going, but in the end they get their deserved happily ever after, and what a beauty it is.

Angel died when he was 14 but an angel saved him, making him an angel himself. He can heal and stop death but can't heal his own selective mutism caused by his anxiety over not telling his parents or BF Raleigh. Raleigh, his business partner in their bar, his apartment roomie, the man he loves. Angel has tried to move on with a boyfriend but Raleigh has many lovers - a girlfriend, an employee, casual pickups, everyone but Angel. Their road to romance is rocky, convoluted and long but they always have each other as BF's until they are forced o confront their feelings. It's a different, original angle on a story but one I enjoyed very much. I received a copy of this and this is my voluntary opinion.

I normally don’t like slow burns much but this one was worth it.

Angel and Raleigh were best friends who suffered a terrible accident when they were young. Due to this, Angel suffered from selective mutism. His only source of communication was through ASL.

Raleigh always took care of Angel. His whole world revolved around him. Through the years, their bond strengthened more and more but he was oblivious to Angel’s feelings.

After an almost wedding and almost death, Raleigh finally understands that Angel is his person. That all this time Angel was what he needed.

This story was a balm for my soul. Great communication and acceptance after Raleigh learns that Angel’s secret. They were truly made for each other and got the best HEA.

This book reads practically as a contemporary novel but there is a slight paranormal twist. It wasn’t a bad twist at all, and with better writing this could have been a solid book.

Instead this is a typical “I’m in love with my best friend” story, with no real ingenuity here. The friendship between both characters seems to start and end with their shared traumatic experience. What they experienced before this point and time doesn’t seem to exist. That itself just lends to the shoddy storytelling.

Other than Eli, there was no real point in two of the side characters. It was pointless and the author could have chosen anything else but alas.

I loved this! Couldn’t put it down. I have one complaint and that is that it was too short. I want more of them together (so I better be getting an email about some 🌶️ bonus chapters).

I was skeptical about the paranormal aspect at first, but it just worked so well. The characters were all great. I often feel like the «player» character is written like an asshole, but Raleigh definitely wasn’t. The bond and chemistry between them was so well written and amazing.

This was over way too quickly.

This was my 1st time reading this author. The story was interesting with one of the MC being an angel and how he turned into one. Raleigh doesn't want to settle down and sleeps with multiple people in this book. Eli has a boyfriend of many years, he does love him, but isn't in love with him. Raleigh has had his heart for many years. Raleigh seems to be oblivious to this. The MC would do anything for each other, but they lack some communication. Interesting story and I look forward to reading more books from the author.
There is an HEA, but takes a long time to get there.
