He has no idea what you're supposed to say when you find one of your...werewolf acquaintances, completely out of their mind, growling like they're about to see what your insides taste like. There's no handbook for this. Stiles is thinking that if he survives he might write one.

Andre wrote: "I really have to ask this:
What is the appeal of Sterek?"

Why I read Sterek.

Actually, it’s Stiles. It’s all about the Stiles.

Firstly, I have never seen an episode of Teen Wolf. My love for Stiles is based purely on fanfics. I actually prefer Steter (Peter/Stiles) over Sterek, because Peter brings a nice edge of sociopathy and non-con to the storyworld. But I guess the question is why Teen Wolf fanfics at all?

I’m speaking only for myself. Other people may have a completely different reason for liking the fics.

1) Stiles as my ideal self
Stiles is socially awkward; he has ADHD, but in an amusing and offbeat way. He speaks before thinking, but he’s wryly witty, full of deft observations of his world, like a kind of teenage 21st century Seinfeld. Stiles is funny. Now I’ve got the daily medication and the speaking before thinking thing down pat, but I’ve never been funny in my life. Stiles is a Manic Pixie Dream Boy – not one that I wish would come into my life and make it magical, but one whom I wish I could be.

2) Stiles as a pack member
Stiles is actually a very lonely individual. In the AU fics where he there is no pack, or in the fics where the pack has cast him out (like the wonderful Happier by Grimm) Stiles is utterly alone except for a single family member, who is notable by being absent 99% of the time. Well, this is me. The only reason I won’t end up as the woman eaten by cats on her kitchen floor is that my apartment building doesn’t allow pets. But Stiles fics hold out this shining treasure – friendship. Stiles has Scott. Stiles has the pack. Teen Wolf fics offer me this glimpse into a life where an alternate version of me could have people to play board games with, go the movies with, even do this weird and unknown thing called “hanging out”. It’s total fantasy land. God, do you know what I would have given, ever, to have the kind of friendships that Stiles has in these stories? But alas, I am an unlikeable person, who never had the knack of being someone other people want to be around. Because romance novels usually focus on the primary pairing they seldom include deep friendships as part of the plot. In TW fics sometimes the friendships are often only a minor part of the story, but they’re almost always there, and they’re a glimpse of iridescence on the inside of the abalone shell of the story. Stiles is often written as the glue that binds the disparate pieces of the pack together. Total. Fantasy. Land. If I’m on holiday from work I can easily go a week without speaking to anyone other than the barista at the coffee shop.

3) Stiles as treasured and special
Both Steter and Sterek fics revolve around the fact that a (literal) Alpha male sees the real value of Stiles – that someone strong and powerful sees the value in Stiles that the regular world overlooks; the hidden worth that is true worth – rather than the surface qualities that others receive their social value through. Stiles’s school represents our everyday world, but outside of this is the powerful figure who knows better, who sees things how they ‘really’ are, without the veil of superficiality. A recurring theme in Sterek stories is Stiles as ‘anchor’ – as the one that bonds with Derek and provides him an ability to find his calmness, to deal with others, who can reason with him when the animal instincts take over. This absolutely isn’t a basis for a solid relationship – in fact IRL this spells disaster - but hell, see point 2 above. No-one has ever seen me as special, although many people saw me as a hot piece of ass when I was younger. Speaking as someone who feels like a disassociated human mind stuck inside a meat body, this is actually worse than not being desired at all. Someone is sexually attracted to this meat body? But that’s not me at all. The meat body will fail, grow old, become flawed and then you’ll be attracted to someone younger with newer meat. The actual me inside will only become richer in experience, and failing dementia (and on the diagnosis of which I am choosing suicide), will improve with age. And the kicker is that only Stiles will do. There is no other option. To be seen, claimed, as irreplaceable and unique - on the value of who he is, and what he can do, in spite of his (theoretically, in fic land, anyway) unprepossessing exterior - is a perfect fantasy.

4) The world as more than base reality
I have no belief in any supernatural entity, including any form of higher power. But how I do wish that there was more to our existence than meets the eye. I like that Sterek fics present a world in which there is a whole squirming ecosystem under the leaf litter of the everyday world (the Nematon, anyone?) (Quantum physics does this for me too, but there are fewer m/m fics about quantum physics).

You can see that Derek, as a character, is unimportant to me. It's not about the Sterek at all. That particular ship is a mere placeholder for the qualities of imagining myself as intellectually appreciated, special, cared about, and existing as an integral part of a broader community. Sounds like a perfect antidote to current neoliberal individualism.

So, yeah, in Sterek we have a perfect storm of stories addressing my every shortcoming, lack, and general failing. What’s not to love?

ETA: I missed one out. 5) The Sheriff. Stiles's reverse-parenting does not eclipse the unconditional protective love Stiles's dad has for him. And that's probably all I should articulate about that.

Loved. I loved this.

The quality of the writing, the nuances, the snark, the fucking tone...

This has to be a professional writer who wrote this. If not, they need to look into it. This is a gem to me. I hit the jackpot.

I gave up sleep for this one. I didn't cry but it touched my feelz cavity (which right next to the heart, on the right upper quadrant to be exact). The pain from Derek...it was subtle but there.

Damn it.

Snarky ass Stiles was dedicated and patient to help with Feral!Derek, I didn't even notice there was no sex. I writhed in their kiss. That was REAL. The slow burn...AHHHH!

I'm in Sterek gush mode. It's disgusting. Fuck.

Something happened to Derek and now he's gone feral. He doesn't let anyone near him except Stiles .

I loved this. It was funny and kinda sweet. Stiles was at his snarky best.

But I wanted more. I thought the thing with Peter was going to be something and it wasn't. I wanted more non-feral Derek time. And an explanation as to WTH happened, who was it that did this to Derek? So this needs a sequel. Preferably one with lots of smut.

Totally open-ended Sterek with an intense hurt/comfort theme. Oddly enough, there's a lot of humor to offset the tragic.

Short review: Great. Very much liked the idea of a feral Derek only trusting Stiles.. Wanted more time with unferal Derek. And more of an ending.

Ok, ok.

This shit, wow, ok. I dunno.

Feral Derek choosing Stiles? That is basic instinct and totally just raw. Pure even.

So, I could have done with a few more pages of normal wolf Derek but I get it. It ended and I get it. Use your imagination and all that.

This book rocked.

A simple tale about a feral wolf and the guy who looks out for him and helps bring him back to the real world!

Derek has been tortured for 3 weeks and shows up a little cray, cray.

The only person he will let near him without trying to rip limbs off is Stiles.

Stiles isn't all that pleased about having to Derek sit but he soon comes into his own.

This is a strange one. It's not really about anything but Stiles looking after Derek. There is no real romance or story but it is sweet and you get to see Stiles go from not particularly liking Derek to the one defending him and ensuring he is safe.

The end felt a bit rushed which is a shame. There was potential for much more but it just ended.

Sweet and funny and at times very sad.

An amusing touching short story. Well-written fanfic. Derek is reduced to the state of a feral child following torture. Only Stiles is able to reach him and try to draw him back to himself.

'Derek's face is scrunched in the rain, running wet, and he looks so stupidly happy. Like biting Stiles on the face, and standing around in a freakin' thunderstorm was all it took to make Derek happy, and honestly Derek has never been happy. Stiles didn't even know Derek knew how to be happy. This is the saddest happy thing Stiles has ever seen.'

This was a REALLY good, well written story, I guess I just prefer stories where both MCs are in their right minds most of the story. Derek spent most of this one out of his mind feral, with Stiles charged with taking care of him until he's back in is right mind. Not much opportunity for personal bonding when one of them is out of their heads feral, so I missed that aspect in this story.

Derek has been missing for quite awhile. When he finally shows up with evidence of being tortured, he is stuck in his werewolf beta form. His humanity has been overtaken by his feral side and he won't allow anyone to help. Well… anyone that's a werewolf.

Huh. So what's the pack to do when Derek is hostile and unresponsive? Luckily human Stiles is not a threat and the only one that is able to get close enough to care for him.

This was often sad and touching as Stiles slowly coaxes Derek back to his own self. Of course it was funny too as one imagines Stiles trying to wrangle basically an all wolfed out, uncommunicative Derek. However as their bond gets stronger, actions sometimes do speak louder than words. Derek reacts purely on base instinct and urges, and Stiles responds to that quite well - that once human deflections, interpretations, and words are gone - no one can really lie when all that subterfuge is stripped way.

Overall, this was an enjoyable short that shows the potential and the heart of the relationship that we know these two have!!

There are reasons why this is a cult fic in the fandom.
It's plausible (in the context of TW), it fits with the characters and their history, it's tender and funny and yeah, the romance is less than prominent, but what happens in this story is, in a way, more of a love story than some romance novels.

This free "Sterek" novella (Teen Wolf fan fiction) is a nice hurt/comfort story. No one knows who Derek fought, or what happened, but he seems to have become permanently lost in his 'wolf', at least mentally. He won't allow any other wolves to get close, so it's Stiles who must patch him up, get him clean and fed, and basically care for him for several weeks. Derek becomes... very attached to Stiles.

If you like hurt/comfort, Sterek, or wolf/shifter stories, this is a fun quick read.

3.5 stars This was really good and I loved seeing Stiles take care of a feral Derek. But like everyone else, I thought this needed at least one more chapter so we could get more of non-ferel Derek. I didn't love that conversation they had, I wish Derek hadn't been so angry and they had actually been able to communicate after everything that had happened.

This was excellent. I really enjoyed reading it. And some of the scenes in this would make hilarious scenes for the show. I love when I can find a really amazing Sterek fic.

This was brilliant! How many jokes and how many stories has compared Derek with a dog? It was a small step to actually write about it.

And what a neat little story this was. It seemed closer to the show in the first pages (or what I think is the atmosphere in the show) with Stiles barely caring about Derek, just being his carefree self, knowing Derek can take care of himself. And Derek seeming aloof and self-reliant.

Then Derek goes missing. Nothing is detailed about what happened to him in the 3-4 weeks that he was gone. And out of his entire pack, it's Stiles that is the least threatening and to whom Derek imprints on when he finds his way home. What can come out of Derek acting like a slightly deranged, sometimes dangerous puppy and Stiles' sarcastic and witty banter? Only good times. So many good jokes and funny or embarrassing moments.

If there is one thing I would have wanted more is a bit of action between them, on an intimate level. Just when things seemed to heat up, the story ends. I wanted to know how things would develop between them.

So yeah. Funny. Witty. Intelligent. Good writing. Go read it!

Derek all wolfed out and feral, choosing Stiles and only Stiles to trust.
Loved the two building an understanding with everything reduced down to basic instinct.

Scott (as most often) was largely self-involved and happy to let Stiles deal. Sterek time was good.

Felt at the end it could have done with some more aware Derek time but at the same time that would have watered down the impact - Derek is always a surely untrusting type, his little talk was big deal his instinctive behaviour towards Stiles revealing more than he could be easy with. I actually liked that end scene; it didn't need more words, it was acceptance and invitation and it just was.

stealing the gif from Pher, she always finds the best ones and this one couldn't fit better. The expressions! :

This fic was fascinating in that it managed both to thoroughly entertain me and make me extremely uncomfortable. A lot of it reminded me of other fics I've read where Derek is a wolf for much of the fic: he's gone completely feral, so he's basically an animal, just in human form. That's the part that made me uncomfortable.

If I could block that out, then the interactions between Stiles and Derek were adorable, and Stiles was every bit as entertaining and hilarious as he should be.

Some Favorite Quotes:
"What do you mean missing? Is that actually missing, or just more subtle in his lurking than usual?" Because if Derek just decided to stop jumping out at people, or hovering ominously at the nearest tree line, Stiles is pretty sure no one would ever see him.

Stiles has never really thought about a bear/werewolf match-up before. Not that he wants to see one because that would just be wrong. Hypothetically awesome - but wrong in real life.

Stiles is friends with too many people who've tried to kill him to feel like he can judge.

Stiles throws his arms out, gesturing, as best as he can at the current Derek-less state of the world.

"Probably because he thinks I'm breakfast. He thinks you've brought him breakfast and breakfast is not threatening. You don't growl at breakfast, you just eat it."

Derek is resistant to the idea of pants. It's like trying to put a dress on a cat. A very strong, six foot tall cat. The pants don't survive the experience, and it's pretty humiliating for everyone involved.

"I attempted to get him into pants. None of us came out of that with our dignity intact, so I think we're both just pretending it didn't happen." He looks at Derek. "I'm pretending it didn't happen. I suspect Derek thinks he won in some way."

"I feel like we shouldn't be trusting the safety of anyone to my ability to believe in something on the fly. I have the attention span of a happy dog."

"I could read you a story," he suggests slowly. "You could bite me on the face. We could see where it went."

Derek is found after being tortured and reverts to his wolf self (acting like a wolf instead of human). Stiles is there for him. Very man’s best friend type of relationship. It is a completed work, but ending made me want so more, a sequel or epilogue, something. What I liked is how it emphasizes Stiles' willingness to always help Derek. Just like in the show, it is Stiles who always steps to the plate to shelter or assist Derek.

And it has great lines:

(In reference to Derek growling at his pack.)
"Maybe he is avoiding them, they're the worst problem children ever, and they ran away from home, remember. You probably can't, like return werewolves to the store if you realize you made a bad life choice."

"'Tall, dark and grumpy is kind of our yardstick of badass,' he allows."

"Stiles is friends with too many people who've tried to kill him to feel like he can judge."

"'I have a life you know,' he shouts anyway. Oh my God though, does he? Does he have a life which doesn't consist of werewolves, and their crazy, crazy problems."

I am THOROUGHLY disappointed that the story didn't develop any further, I was hoping for some romance between Stiles and Derek to be developed with actual Derek, for them to realize there is something there and end with a Happily EA, but I got nothing, zilch, nada, zero, FUCKING NOthing!
It was a good story, well told, well written, very entertaining, page turning (if it was a physical book, which it is not) but the fact that I am so very disappointed in the book means it gets two stars. Seriously, how can it just end where it did? Not okay!!!!
