I became hooked on Colin Garrow's books, when I read Terminal Black, the first of his Relic Black series. Killer Black is the fourth and latest book in the series and as I have found, the series gets better with each book published. This gritty Scottish crime series is mainly set in Inverness and the main character in the story, Relic Black, has progressed from being a thief, taking things that don't belong to him, such as credit cards, golf clubs, cars and people's identities to being what could be termed as an enforcer for an organised crime gang.

As usual the storyline is excellent, with some darkly humorous scenes and some very witty dialogue. The novel kept me engrossed from the first page turned and I literally couldn’t put it down. Although it could be read as a standalone novel, it really does need to be read in the order that the series was written, if the reader is to get the full enjoyment from them.

I’m not going to give the plot away, but will say that it kept me guessing right up to the last few pages, whether Relic was going to survive, or end up in a shallow grave. I look forward to reading more of Relic's adventures. Note of warning to readers of a sensitive nature, there are adult themes running through the novel and strong language. Nothing gratuitous however, or which offended me. Well done, Mr Garrow on yet another excellent novel.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first three thrillers in the Relic Black series, so I was fairly confident I’d feel equally positive about book four, Killer Black. I found it even more engaging than the other books in the series. As can be expected, the characters became increasingly familiar and interesting with each book I read and I was glad I’d read the previous books. I was even more comfortable with the dialect used in the dialogue than in book one.

Colin Garrow won me over again with his strong females, an array of chilling baddies, a generous sprinkling of funny characters, tense situations, and a dramatic, poignant climax. Despite it being called the Relic Black series, I felt as close to some of the other characters as I did to Mr Black. I recommend you read the entire five-star series like I did.
