Possessive Monsters #7

Here Be Dragons

Rate this book
This new job at the Darlington Museum is everything I ever wanted. The pay is awesome, and I get to spark a passion for history in young minds. I just need to pass my probation period. No problem, right?

Wrong! The second week in, I spill hot coffee all over my super sexy billionaire dragon shifter boss, ruining his pants. Then, while trying to help him clean up, I accidentally grab something rather, uh—formidable—and totally inappropriate. Talk about a horrible first impression!

Plot twist: instead of firing me, Desmon asks me out to lunch. Did I mention he’s a hot-as-sin billionaire dragon who’s also the most powerful being in the city?

It soon becomes obvious that I am his mate. But this discovery comes at the worst possible time—Desmon is close to winning a centuries-long competition, and his rival will do anything to stop him.

Cue the craziest week of my life as we race to find an elusive magical artifact. Because losing is not an option…not when it will cost Desmon everything he’s ever loved.

This story takes place before all previous books in the Possessive Monsters series. Here Be Dragons is a standalone paranormal romance with sweet & steamy scenes, and an ultra-protective billionaire dragon shifter.

FMC moves to a new city for her new job and immediately spills coffee all over her boss’s pants. Classic meet-cute. Except her boss turns out to be a centuries-old dragon shifter and she just so happens to be his fated mate. The timing could not be worse, since he has enemies and no room for distractions.

🐉 dual POV
🌸 plus size FMC
🐉 fated mates
🌸 touch her and die

This is a prequel and on the shorter side. My biggest issue was how quickly everything happened, even for a shifter romance. The relationship escalated at lightning speed. None of the characters were unlikable, but some felt a bit two dimensional. One of the FMC’s main traits is that she’s “a klutz,” which gets repeated quite a bit.

There were some original and fun elements — I liked the riddles, the bets, and the dragon’s backstory. But at times it felt like the book was trying to cram in as many tropes as possible within a tight page count. The FMC is kidnapped twice, the miscommunication trope is going strong, and the entire relationship arc seems to happen in under a week.

To break it down: day one, spilled coffee. Day two, they agree to a "work" date. Day three, she gets kidnapped. Then they are suddenly engaged. After that, they spend “multiple” days in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, then end up in Maui. That is a lot to fit into seven days, and the pacing made it hard to stay grounded in the story.

That said, I really liked Q-Tip, the FMC's pet. The dragon’s lore worked well, and I think the world has potential. If you are looking for a light, fast-paced paranormal romance filled with tropes, this might hit the spot.

For me, the emotional arc just did not feel fully earned. I enjoy fated mates and even instalove when there is enough buildup to make the bond feel believable, but in this case, the connection felt a bit too surface level. Physical attraction and the magical mate pull were there, but we did not really get to see them learn about each other or build any kind of trust, which made it hard to get invested in the romance itself. I think with more time spent on emotional development and fewer rapid plot jumps, this could have landed much better with me.

prequel

I’m so glad that they finally gave Carly and Desmon’s story! It was a cute story and was such a challenge to the finish line, if you’ve read the other books you know who wins but wow that had some twists. The village story was rough, the memories tugged at my heart and broke a little- would’ve done the exact same thing. Loved!

A klutzy historian and an ancient dragon make quite the match in Here Be Dragons. This was a great read, full of excitement and adventure.

MFC, Carly's firey hair matches her chaotic and anxious personality but she wears a good game face. Fake it till you make it really does work for Carly. I liked Carly, she said she did have main character energy but I disagree sure Carly lacks confidence sometimes (who doesn't) but she was also passionate and sassy. Most definitely MC energy.

Desmon is very much not human. Sometimes I read supernaturals whose personalities are very close to human, for example in the previous book MMC, while others... Their thought process is very much non-human and that's Desmon. He was an interesting character. I loved getting his pov on dragons. According to him dragons as a whole, are bougie (not surprising), can't be trusted, and are flippantly savage with everyone except for those they care for. Heck, they yeat unborn siblings off of mountains. It was one of the best insights I've read.

I was so happy that the story takes place (somewhat) in a museum. There is just something about a story that takes place (even partially) in a museum. It gives the story a little bit of extra, like something unexpected is going to happen. It gives off a sense of adventure. I loved the competition aspect of the story and how well it was incorporated into everything. It sorta gave off treasure hunt vibes and who doesn't love a treasure hunt?

Here Be Dragons was such a fun read. There was one unexpected moment that brought tears to my eyes, it gave the story the emotional levity that it needed. Possessive Monsters is a great series, considering how late I am to the series (this is only the second one I've read) I would love for Maggie to keep the series going while I play catch-up.

This is a very interesting and heart warming story. It’s got everything you could want it: danger, romance, a challenge, and enough humour to cause you to chuckle. I can’t wait for Maggie‘s next book!

Gleeful Goblin Review: I have absolutely devoured every book in this series and I'm enthralled by the world the author has built. We have a chance to see characters go from side characters to main characters in their own book and I have to say I've been looking forward to this story for a hot minute! I enjoy dragon/dragon shifter stories and I enjoy museum and artifact centered stories already but having them together in one is a delight. This is one of the few books that I've read where the author delves into details about how and why a dragon hoards items which I found utterly fascinating: "Dragons lived a long time, and as such, we often passed the time by participating in friendly…and not-so-friendly…competitions and games. Normally, I was the one placing the bets. This time, I was one of the participants being wagered on. This particular competition had been going on between me and a rival dragoness for such a long time that I was ready for it to be over. The goal was to be the first to collect four rare artifacts. There were six in total, but the winner only had to collect four. There was no prize for the winner, but there was a punishment for the loser: A hundred years of sleep. It wasn’t that long in the grand scheme of things, but a lot could change in a century. For example, that cute little human I’d just met would be long gone if I slept for a hundred years. I checked my messages again and grumbled impatiently. Why didn’t we just airlift the wretched thing directly here? Then again, if I treated this statue any differently from other museum trades, it would look suspicious and the dragoness might suspect something. I wanted everyone to think that this was just two museums routinely loaning each other goods. It was one of the reasons why I’d started this museum in the first place: I needed a front for this kind of activity. It was only later on that I realized that treasures hidden away forever weren’t worth nearly as much as artifacts admired, evaluated and appraised by human eyes. Because of the museum, I’d gone from a nobody dragon to one of the richest ones in history. It wasn’t because I had more in my hoard than other dragons. Not at all. It was because my collection had arbitrary, man-made values assigned to many of the pieces because I’d put them on display."

Having the FMC be a museum employee and history nerd with an unconventional and humorous approach to her job made Carly a tremendously engrossing character to me. She's a little anxious, wants badly to Do A Good Job at work, and loves her pet beyond reason all of which made me love her more and more. These two are perfect together and I loved them working together on the artifact mission. It reminded me in a great way of Rick and Evie from The Mummy. The way that they build ideas off each other and spur each other on. Totally a fun bit of action adventure mixed in with dragon romance. 5/5 Stars.

The New Employee . . .

Carly has a new job at the Darlington Museum and couldn’t be happier… at least until she grabbed her lunch bag and coffee and raced through the foyer to punch the time clock before she was deemed late. There was apparently a clothing thief in her new apartment who stole her only set of black work clothes from the dryer, making her rush around to find something clean and appropriate to wear today. Now racing down the hall, she slammed into a hard chest, dumping her coffee all over the man she will soon find is the museum owner and director -- her new boss Desmon! In a panic, she grabbed a handful of napkins from her purse and started pressing against his clothing as she mopped up the dripping mess. When she realized what it was she was pressing the napkin against, she was mortified and the dragon emitted a loud growl! She grabbed paper towels in the staff room, ready to race back to the soggy man when he walked in. Another employee also came in and introduced Carly to her new boss! When they had called him the Dragon of Darlington, she thought they meant his attitude. But it seems he’s the real definition of a fire-breathing dragon!

Desmon hadn’t fired her (yet), so she was ready to start her second day when she was kidnapped and her apartment ransacked. Desmon recognized the scent of one of the kidnappers. He had smelled it at the museum but didn’t at first remember who it belonged to. Desmon and a dragoness (who will do anything to win) have been in a competition to find certain hidden artifacts, with the loser required to sleep for 100 years! Carly being kidnapped will distract and slow Desmon down in his search for the artifacts. But his mate is in danger! Will Desmon be able to find where she is being held? Will he and his friends be able to rescue his mate Carly from the kidnapper who will do whatever it takes to win the competition she and Desmon are in? And would he have time to claim the final artifact in the competition so he can be with his mate? Don’t miss this wonderful story! Laughter and excitement will keep the reader fully invested in the outcome!

Finding His Greatest Treasure Of All

First off, I gotta say that I love this cover. They’ve all been eye catching, but this one is just extra special in my eyes (I think it’s her dress…it’s gorgeous 😍). Anyways, now the story. So I’m pretty sure I’ve said this before, but I do believe this may be my favorite in the series (they’re all really good, so it’s hard to keep up 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️). From the very first chapter you could tell that Carly’s story was going to be full of humor & chaos, and WOW, it really was 😂 Carly was so adorable & sweet, but also so smart & full of fight for the right cause. Desmond, our MMC, a dragon who owned the museum Carly had just started working at, soon came to realize that Carly was indeed all of that, which he appreciated since she also happened to be his mate. The timing could’ve been better, since he was close to winning a competition with another dragon that would mean the difference between 100 years of sleep, or having a lifetime with Carly. He was determined to be the winner though, and Carly (and her unique gift) was going to help. If a HEA was in their future, they’d have to fight for it, and now that they found each other, neither one was willing to let go. If you love a humorous fast paced storyline, wonderful lovable characters, a treasure hunt done the dragon way, just the right touch of mystery, adventure, danger & action, and all surrounding a perfectly balanced sweet & spicy love story, then you have to read this. I promise it will leave you with a smile on your face, and leave you wishing magic & monsters were real ✨ I can’t wait to see what MM has in store for us next ❤️

Carly, the female human-presenting witch historian lead, was desperately enthused to receive a job offer in Darlington. She was then mortified to be her normal klutzy self and spill her coffee on the owner, Desmon, the male dragon shifter lead, and then accidentally touch him very personally whilst trying to clean him up.

Desmon is shocked to hear his dragon claim Carly as his mate. But he’s got bigger concerns in the form of a challenge he’s nearly finished against a competitor willing to go to extremes to win. When she realises that Carly is Desmon’s weak point, Desmon has to act to protect her. Now he needs to convince her he’s a dragon worth keeping…

This story is dual POV, well written, and a much-anticipated story for this series - it’s actually the prequel, which has been teased at throughout this contemporary fantasy romance series, with many interconnected characters. It stands alone but I was very excited to see it and even happier once I read it. I chuckled ruefully at Carly’s clumsiness, and enjoyed her resilience. I appreciated that she was willing to challenge Desmon. I enjoyed Desmon’s changing focus towards Carly, and the way he worked to show his devotion to her. I enjoyed their relationship development and their steamy intimate scenes. I laughed at the banter between the lead characters, as well as with secondary characters. I enjoyed the cameos from other stories’ characters, and the supportive secondary characters.

I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.

Here Be Dragons is the prequel to the Possessive Monsters series and I was excited to read Carly and Desmon’s story after hearing about them in Rock Hard Gargoyle which is book 1 of the series. This was a fun read and great addition providing some additional world-building as well as background of characters from the rest of the series.

MMC Desmon is a dragon who has been around for a long time and seen his town develop through the ages. Out of boredom and in seeking a challenge during his long life, he has been engaging in a treasure seeking game with another dragon. It will bring some danger and mystery to his doorstep and unwittingly to FMC Carly. She is a somewhat clumsy and presumably human newcomer to town who has just taken a job at Desmon’s museum. He is instantly enchanted and drawn to Carly, and he thinks that there may be a very good reason as to why.

I loved this couple and their story which was fast-paced with plenty of action and romance! Highlights include Carly’s adorable and feisty pet bunny Q tip, an awesome dragon lair with matching cave-like bedroom and bathroom, and plenty of steam. I also thoroughly enjoyed Desmon’s inner monologue and how it is ruled by his dragon’s thoughts and feelings. “I was Desmon the Dragon of Darlington! I took what I wanted!”

This is a great series - well written with a continuing storyline that draws you in. I’m reading through the subsequent books and enjoying them!

After reading all the other books in this series, I finally get to "hear" Desmon and Carly's story.
Carly is a woman just getting her life on track and new to Darlington. It starts off with a funny meet cute with her spilling coffee on Desmon, and she doesn't know he is the owner of the musuem. The museum she just started working for. Desmon is a dragon who has learned to look upon "lesser being" as more. His history with Seth and Mateo is revealed. This paints a picture of a dragon who has learned to care for others, despite his innate selfishness and superiority ego.
Desmon's dragon realizes right away that Carly is their mate. Desmon is not far behind that realization, when she gets kidnapped. Not long after he mates her and then they are on a race to complete a competition.
Although, Carly is portrayed as a klutz, she is not. She is however,a bit ditzy. Who mates with a dragon and then asks questions about it. As it was, she did not get all her answers. She had known him for only two days, didn't know him and was not in love with him. The romance and mating seemed a bit rushed, not sensical like the other books.
This story has some action, heat, and adventure. If that is what you are looking for, you may enjoy this book.

Newly hired museum docent Carly is intrigued by and inordinately attracted to her boss Desmon, who’s definitely something other than human. Just before she’s about to leave her apartment to head to her second day of work, a pair of thugs force their way through her door, ransack every part of her belongings, and violently abduct her.

Museum owner and dragon Desmon is intrigued by the curvy young woman hired to conduct tours of his horde. When she doesn’t show up for her second work day and especially the luncheon he’s anticipated having with her, Desmon visits her apartment and sees the destruction. He calls in the cavalry in the form of his otherworldly friends, and the search for Carly is on.

I don’t want to spoil anything but I will say that if you’ve read and enjoyed the previous books in the series, you’ll surely love this.

The wonderfully imaginative mind of Maggie Mayhem delivers another steamy, and sexy read in this series with a touch of intrigue. It’s also laced with humor and appearances by previously featured fated mates.

I was lucky to have received an advance reader copy from the author and booksprout, and I’m pleased to share my honest impressions.

Here Be Dragons is both suspenseful and a definite page-turner of a paranormal romance story. When I first read the overview of Here Be Dragons, I knew right away that I had to read the whole book to find out what was going to happen between the main characters. Here Be Dragons is the seventh installment in the Possessive Monsters series. Here Be Dragons follows the journey of Carly and Desmon. I fell in love with Carly and Desmon right from the start of the book, I found them both to be quite interesting and intriguing. The characters were all well-developed, beautifully written, and exceptionally executed throughout the book. Author Maggie Mayhem does a fabulous job with the way she brings this amazing book to life through her amazing writing skills. Author Maggie Mayhem continues to take me by surprise with her amazing romance stories that have captivating storyline/plots, have wonderful characters, and amazing outcome for the main characters. Here Be Dragons is certainly a book that I would HIGHLY recommend to anyone who enjoys reading monster romance stories.

This is book 7 in the Possessive Monsters series, but it takes place before all previous books in the series.

Desmon's dragon constantly made me crack up throughout the book and reminded me a lot of my favorite wolf character in another urban fantasy series.

Carly's feelings of not being good enough to be a main character are mentioned and instead of getting annoyed and feeling like she's a whiny, self-deprecating character, I empathize with her because she doesn't just wallow in her feelings. She's tries to deal with them in a healthy way and doesn't allow herself to feel worse by being her own bully.

The inner thoughts of Desmon on the second meeting with Carly made me laugh. "I’d been thinking about her ever since our meeting yesterday. Or rather, my dragon had. He clearly wanted to own her, possess her, hide her away in our cave of treasures. I’d had to remind him several times that Carly was a human being, not a chew toy."

Overall, this book had many moments that made me chuckle and I plan to go back and read the series from book 1. For me, this was a great introduction to the author's writing style and fantasy world.

Before getting on with the review I just want to add a little side note.

Maggie as an author and a human being was remarkably nice and kind. Helpful and accommodating even when she didn’t need to be! So props to her and thank you a million times for giving me this as an ARC!

Now, about the book.It's a 4.75✨/5✨.

I’ve been wanting a story about these two since their wedding in book one. I was excited and grateful we finally got it!

Carly was sweet and understanding, even if a little too quick to judge at times. She just needed her time to process things. I liked her a lot. She didn’t freak out about a dragon being her mate or about the sudden adventure she was thrust into.

And poor sweet Desmond, I adore this man-shifter-dragon! He was perfect. The mixture between dominant but not overbearing, caring, dirty-mouth, and protective. He has been through a lot and deserves the love and support of his mate.

Loved this book! Honestly, I hope this series goes on forever!!!

Here Be Dragons is a humorous, sweet, spicy story that opens with MFC human Carly on her first day of work at Darlington Museum literally running into her employer and dumping her morning coffee all over his expensive billionaire pants.
MMC dragon shifter Desmon takes it all in stride, but only because he finds Carly too cute in her embarrassment. His dragon is thinking, MATE!
Desmon happens to be wrapped up in a competition with another dragon at the moment to find four out of six hidden artifacts, the loser will have to sleep for a thousand years which he plans on avoiding by winning. Then Carly inadvertently gets caught up in the rush to the finish line by being kidnapped which has HIM finally listening to his dragon, MATE!
I so enjoyed this well written narrative with its adventure, action, quirky characters, romance, spice, action, and intrigue that made for a very entertaining read! HEA.

This is where it all started 💖🌟💖🌟🔥💖🌟

If you're A fan of the series you'll realise this is where it all started. One of out favourite Gargoyle's meets his match at the very wedding of the wonderful couple in this book. So its nice to see their whole story come to life. Desmon is the dragon of Darlington beyond wealthy, A bit eccentric and oh so very handsome! He runs a museum where he displays his treasures that he has accumulated over centuries. When Carly is hired as a tour guide he can't seem to keep his dragon from wanted to hoard her like treasure! Together they try to solve a puzzle that will allow them to find a hidden artifact that Desmon must win in order to stay awake for the next hundred years. Love blooms along the way and many of our favorite characters make a guest appearance. A terrific read and I can't wait to visit Darlington again soon!💖🌟🔥🔥💖🔥🔥🌶🔥💖🌶🌟💖🔥🔥🔥💖💖💖

13. Here Be Dragons by Maggie Mayhem 281

genres: romance paranormal romance shapeshifter, dragon
ranking: a hug, a comfort read that fed my soul 7.5/10

the first line:
“My heels clacked on the marble tile floor as I hurried through the foyer of Darlington Museum, my lunch bag in one hand and a coffee in the other.”

notes:
"-- a lot happens in this short book
-- great descriptions of a museum and various artefacts
-- the mmc has a detailed painful backstory
-- the author helps us to understand the characters through their inner monologues
-- the conflict/fight between the mmc and mfc was just rushed and stupid
-- good word-building, a lot of magic, a competition between dragons"

quotes:
"How in the actual hell had I gotten myself caught up in some dragon turf war?
That sounded like a plot straight out of a movie, which sucked because I wasn’t main character material. Main characters, more often than not, made it out alive. Side characters? Not so much."

I've never read anything by this author before and this is book 7 of the series. But the description had the events of this book happening as a prequel to the rest so it does read as a standalone. Honestly I only grabbed the arc of this book because it fit a challenge prompt for monster romance. I was surprised how much I liked it. It was funny right from the start with klutzy Carly spilling coffee on the man she learns later is her boss... and a dragon. And because he's a dragon, the instalove of his claiming her as mate within days didn't seem as cringeworthy as usual. The addition of the competition to the plot added some excitement and additional characters that I'd like to get to know better. For a book I picked on a whim, now I'm interested in continuing the series.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Carly has moved to Darlington for a new job at the museum. Disaster nearly strikes when she accidentally throws coffee on her boss's trousers in a typical klutz moment. Expecting to be fired on the spot instead the Dragon of Darlington takes an interest in her.

Desmon may well be attracted to the beautiful curvy little human but his dragon is completely smitten.

Just as he is easing her into contemplating a date with him his centuries long competition with another dragon puts her life in danger. The experience makes him see which treasure he truly values.

Another fantastic story in this brilliant series. This time sharing the romance between strong willed, capable, sunshine personality Carly and remote, gruff, jaded Desmon. Enjoyable as always from this author.

This cover is to die for, I love it! There are some genuine klutzs out there and bless her but Carly is one of them. I think that made me love her all the more. She has her own demons (not Desmon, not yet, wait for it) and I loved how she handled them. I know that often the female characters have a low sense of worth but some truly wallow in it and I end up disliking them immensely, Carly is not like that at all. She recognises the voices in her head and fights for herself. Desmon had not anticipated that the new hire would be his mate but he is determined that she will be with him, whatever it takes. I loved that he accepted her as she was and there was no subtle attemtps to change her. As ever with the fantastic Maggie M, you have just the right mix of intrigue, passion and action that makes some of the best reading.

Ever since I read the series of Possessive Monsters I was curious about Carly and Desmon. I was not disappointed.
I love the humor, action, twists and of course the eventual steam to the romance. The flow was good, never a dull moment.
I liked Carly. As Seth said " you have a brain and you know how to use it." Their first encounter was epic.
Desmon was not disappointing. He was an alpha dragon, grumpy . But he would do anything for Carly. I loved his dragon. Desmon should have listened to him. After all his dragon knows best.
The cave experience allowed Carly to learn more about Desmon.
I will be reading this wonderful, romantic story again.

Sweet and Steamy

I can tell why the Author waited til after to write the prequel. It gives A LOT of future info away. I loved how sweet these two were, and while it wasn't as spicy as some of the others,
(scenes ok but not long enough with enough detail in my option. As in, the size difference wasn't much of a difference), I still very much enjoyed the ride. It was nice to see how those two got together, and the scene where someone had to "recharge" while in the room with everyone, even his Mom, had me internally lmao 🤣. Although, I don't recalling her BFF getting a guy. I checked all the other books, but unless it was discreetly slipped in there, I didn't see it. I hope this doesn't mean the end for this series. I love these books 🥰

- Paranormal romance
- Workplace romance
- Fated mate

I really liked this book! The FMC Carly is a museum worker who is a bit clumsy, which makes her more likable and relatable. I snort giggled when she was cleaning up the coffee she spilled.... whoopsie!

Desmon is a grumpy dragon who is searching for an artifact, one that he is trying to locate before another dragon. The stakes are high and Desmon will not lose.

However, he realizes his new employee is his fated mate and he cannot afford this distraction. He must now keep Carly safe and find that artifact!

This is the prequel to the Possessive Monsters series and I highly recommend it!.

“Who knew I had a thing for fangs! I was learning a lot about myself today.”

Is it me, or is it hot in here😁? Carly is a new employee at the Darlington Museum when she meets Desmon, the resident Dragon who knows right away she is his mate. Now he only has to solve the competition and win the girl. Get ready for lots of action, the help of the rest of the crew, and a chance to be a member of the Q-tip 🐇 fan club 💗. A rollicking and steamy good time from another great story. Love, love, love this series!! Thanks Maggie!.
