It was my worst nightmare come to life—having to tell my childhood best friend that she was being left at the altar.
As Man of Honor, it was my duty to be the one to pass on the message, breaking both our hearts in the process.
Picking up the pieces is made worse when the small-town rumor mill runs rampant. There’s only one choice—escape. A weekend away, just the two of us. A chance to cause some trouble like we used to as kids.
Until one drunken kiss reveals a massive secret I didn’t see coming, leading to a bigger one I had no plan of ever confessing.
Next thing I know, Dolly’s in my arms—and in my bed—and all my wildest dreams are coming true.
If only it were that simple.
She’s the town sweetheart.
I’m the guy that will never be good enough for her.
Us being together would send Hickory Hills into a frenzy.
Lucky for them, causing a little chaos is my forte. Because now that I’ve had a taste of Dolly, there’s no going back.
Claire Hastings is a walking, talking awkward moment. She loves Diet Coke, gummi bears, the beach, and books (obvs). When not reading she can usually be found hanging with friends at a soccer match or grabbing food (although she probably still has a book in her purse). She and her husband Drew live in Atlanta with their fur-child Denali.
What do you do when you’re the Man of Honor and it's up to you to tell your best friend, the bride, that she's been left at the alter? If you’re Huxley Hayes, you whisk her away, dry her tears, and help her heal. And hope that the fact you’ve loved her for years isn’t written all over your face.
I love everything about this one. The way Huxley loves Dolly quietly, the way Dolly is oblivious until she isn’t, the phenomenal cast of characters, it all makes for an captivating, funny, emotional read. Hickory Hills, GA, just maybe my favorite fictional world ever, and I loved returning their to watch Huxley and Dolly figure it all out.
The beautiful thing about this small town, though, is the amazing group of friends and family who are always there for each other, and I may be more in love with the group as a whole than any individual couple. Huxley and Dolly's romance is sweet, captivating, and heartfelt, and the friend group takes the whole thing to the next level.
This is small-town romance done right. Full of small-town magic and southern charm, you'll fall in love with everything about this phenomenal romance read. Sweet, steamy, and bursting with heart, you absolutely won’t want to miss this wonderful, enchanting small-town romance!
Another masterpiece from Claire! She makes me laugh, swoon and fall in love with her characters. So many of my favorite tropes - friends to lovers, small town, friends to lovers business owner…tattooed hottie mc hottie!!
From the first word…this book will grab you and you will not want to put it down. Chapter 14 is sure to set your kindle on fire! Wow!!!
Huxley is the ultimate best friend, boyfriend…man. He has a huge heart, is so thoughtful and protects those he cares about. He will do anything for Dolly.
Dolly, sweet Dolly, is going through a major life change and luckily she has her friends to help her through. She is strong, a bit insecure right now but is ready for a new start.
“Huxley Hayes, y’all…gentleman in the streets, ruined of bed sheets…”
This is such an amazing read - you will have all the feels, laugh your face off and fab your face! And I always love seeing Dr Galindo mentioned…lol
This is a Hayes family book. I have been waiting for Hux’s story. We see a lot of him and his best friend Dolly in other stories in this series. It was so easy to fall in love with him. Hux and Dolly’s story is a lifetime in the making. They have loved one another forever but didn’t admit it until after Dolly was left at the alter. They are fun and get into all kinds of trouble together. A lifetime of friendship makes their story extremely enjoyable especially the way that Dolly interacts with Hux family. These two are absolutely perfect together.
Do you love Southern small towns, large family dynamics & childhood friends that finally become lovers? This one’s for you!!!
I adore this series & the small town it’s set in. And all of the wonderful characters that have become a staple of the series. The mending, gossipy old people are a staple for southern small towns.
Huxley Hayes & Dolly McClain are members of the towns’ oldest families & have been best friends since childhood. When they pinky promised “they’d only be just friends.” Until Dolly’s fiancé walks away from the wedding, the actual ceremony!!! Thank God!! It’s so much fun seeing them working together to built their romantic relationship. I’m so glad Dolly & Hux finally got there happily ever after!!
Sundown Somewhere is Hayes Family book #3. Hux and Dolly finally have their own story told!
They were part of almost every other book about Hickory Hills. Friends since they were nine years old, their feelings for each other growing into a love they both denied. And then finally, finally a well deserved HEA! I loved their story, and their personalities, and am so happy for them. I felt like I was part of it all.
“Huxley Hayes, y’all… gentleman in the streets, ruiner of bed sheets…”
I received an arc of this book and this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
The Hayes family saga continues with Hux and Dolly, for years everyone could see that these two best friends were perfect together, I say everyone- everyone but them!! Best friends from the age of 9 and it takes a jilted bride for them to realise how hot they are together. Hux feels he’s not good enough for her, the tattooed bad boy to Dolly the towns sweetheart but I can honestly say the way he looked after her and loved her made him the perfect MC. A wonderful story with great chemistry, amazing family dynamics, pure love and heat. Look forward to the next story.
This book was so YUMMY! The friends to more and the grand gestures…sooo sweet. This was a feel good read that kept me dialed in to the very last word! I didn’t want it to end but was happy these guys got their HEA!
I wanted Hux and Dolly to have a story so bad and this was perfect. I loved the whole thing and couldn't put it down. It was everything. Huxley is just so good to Dolly. The chemistry was good and it was well written.
It’s official. Hux is likely my favorite brother. So far, anyway. He and Dolly have been friends for so long that he’s afraid to make a change to what he REALLY wants. But he doesn’t realize that maybe, just maybe, Dolly’s been wondering if they could’ve been more also. It only takes her being left at an inopportune time, him making her think she’s rejected again before he makes it right, and some serious fears to get them where they want to be….
This is honestly the best story of the series. Sure, I know there are more coming. Hux, though? He’s just got something about him. And Dolly is someone you want as a friend and the person you’d likely go to war for if she asked. But she’s never going to ask, which only makes Hux love her more. I especially love their moments of worry that they aren’t enough because they can’t fathom that the other might have the same exact worries. But all is well in the end, and we are now here to wait to see if Anton finally meets his snarky match!
When your best friend and maid of honor is a man. And that same man is there to comfort you when you are left at the alter. But make no mistake he doesn't leave you any room to become depressed. Throw in the best gal pals and his brood of siblings and this makes for one fun read.
This was such a good book. It was a friends to lovers style book with stramy chemistry, stubborn pride, and misunderstandings from younger years. It was well written and fun to read. This is a definite must-read.
“The Clyde to my Bonnie. The yee to my haw. The milk to my cookies. The Peter to my Wendy.”
I always enjoy Hickory Hills and have been so excited for Hux and Dolly's story. It was very enjoyable and I enjoyed watching them come together. Their connection was so strong. I especially enjoyed Dolly’s personal growth. This small town, friends to lovers romance was a great addition to the series! Thank you Claire Hastings for the opportunity to read this ARC. Looking forward to Anton's story!
Oh. My. Gosh. These 2 are the absolute sweetest and sassiest couple and I just adore them. "He's the Peter to my Wendy" 😍 way to raise the bar to unattainable status for all the regular guys out there lol
Sundown Somewhere is everything I love! I loved watching Hux and Dolly go from best friends to what everyone else has seen for years! This book has so many great moments and so many highlightable moments! I love the Hayes family and the town of Hickory Hills! This book is one of my favorite reads in 2025!
Every single woman needs a Huxley Adams Hayes in their life. That is all.
Well. No. That isn't all. But that was the biggest feeling I had while reading this book.
Hux isn't flawless. And there were times where I wanted to shake him and tell him to open his mouth and use all of his words RIGHT NOW. However. Overall. Everyone needs a Hux in their lives.
This is just a sweet as sin story.
A best friends falling in love story. One of them has already fallen in love and is in it DEEP. The other has been running from it and doesn't even realize they are running; until they stop and realize that they are. Then there is the freak out. (Just for a moment. Less than a chapter.) Then there is the acceptance and the "What was I doing?!" part of it all.
The best part of this story is the soul deep understanding and complete acceptance that these two characters had for each other from the start -- and how that soul deep understanding and love for each other was still there and unwavering at the end of the book.
At zero point in this book was there ever an "I wish he/she would....." It was ALWAYS "I love how they..." They understood each other to a level of deepness that most couples never reach even after decades of loving each other. They have an acceptance of one and other that couples who have been together for decades work hard to achieve. For Hux and Dolly - it just IS.
That's the magic that was in this book for me. At zero point in this book, as they were figuring out how to move from friends to more than friends, did they ever stop being the other's person. They never shied away from offering support, understanding, love, comfort, and acceptance for all of the emotions that they were spewing out - even at the expense of themselves. Because that's how their relationship has always worked. And that was how their relationship was going to work in the "after" of becoming more than friends.
I loved watching Hux bumble around trying to show his Dolly how much she has meant to him. And does mean to him. How proud he is of her. How he sees her. Every part of her. Every day. I just wish the man would use his words more instead of holding things close to his chest!
Dolly, I understood a bit more. She's been running trying to find that forever romantic love with someone else since she has it in a friendship love with Hux. And she and Hux? They promised that they would never have that romantic love.
I understand not wanting to have your lives dictated to you by the busy bodies of a small town. And the feeling of having your entire life taken out of your hands and planned by a group of know it alls who don't know you at all. Add in the fact that Dolly has thought she'd found that forever love before and been wrong - second guessing her self over and over when it IS Hux is completely understandable. With Dolly too, I wished she'd been vulnerable enough to use all of her words with him sooner. And more.
But then there wouldn't have been that perfect sweet lovely ache in this book would there? And the story would have been an novella instead of the utter perfection of a novel that it is? So my "complaints" aren't really complaints at all. It's just me whining about having my heart strung along by the author and her two wonderful characters in the best way possible.
Now. Why should everyone have a Hux in their lives? Ladies and Gents. This man SEES his people. And then he acts on it. Big and small things. He shows up. He puts in the time. He hears the words his people say and he carries them in his heart. The acts of love and kindness he shows to Dolly through out the book - from just taking a lunch break with her so she can have a small moment to unload her day, to the largest biggest most long lasting testament of love that he could come up with - are just ....... they are ROMANCE NOVEL LEVEL WORTHY. Which is guess makes sense as he lives inside of one.
Hux is the guy you hope exists in the world and gives you hope that there are guys out there like him. He is the person who remembers when you said off handedly that you love Twizzlers; so whenever he sees them, he'll pick some up for you - just because. He's the guy who knows your favorite show, and all of the actors in it, even if he doesn't watch it. Just so he can keep up with your weekly rants about it. He'll even be on top of when the new seasons drop. He knows if your prefer cream over milk in your coffee, or if you hate coffee. He's just THAT guy.
He's that guy, all of the time, to Dolly. And she's that girl, all of the time, to Hux.
Reading these two slowly come to realize that they have been utterly and completely in love with each other for years and have been blind to it all was one of my favorite reads thus far this year. Very easy to give this book the five stars that it deserves.
I recently had the pleasure of reading Sundown Somewhere, the third installment in Claire Hastings' Hayes Family series. This charming small-town romance tells the story of Hux, a character whose journey from friendship to something more is both heartwarming and engaging.
The chemistry between the leads was undeniable, with a strong focus on character development that made them relatable and endearing. Hux's character, in particular, was well-crafted, and his growth throughout the story was satisfying to watch.
The small-town setting was vividly portrayed, and the use of the friends-to-lovers trope added a delightful layer of complexity to the narrative. The way the characters navigated their feelings for each other was both authentic and emotionally charged.
The emotional journey of the characters was compelling, with themes of love, vulnerability, and personal growth. The way they supported each other through their struggles was beautifully portrayed.
At times, the pacing felt a bit uneven, with some sections moving more quickly than others. However, this didn't detract significantly from my overall enjoyment. While the main characters were well-developed, some supporting characters felt slightly underutilized. However, they still contributed to the richness of the narrative.
Overall, Sundown Somewhere was a delightful read that delivered on its promise of a heartwarming small-town romance. While it may not have been perfect, the strengths of the book far outweighed its weaknesses. Fans of friends-to-lovers romances with a strong focus on character development will likely enjoy this book. Claire Hastings' storytelling continues to captivate, and I look forward to more from this series. If you're in the mood for a lighthearted, feel-good romance with lovable characters, Sundown Somewhere is definitely worth checking out.
Sundown Somewhere by Claire Hastings was beyond words for me. If I could give this book and series more than 5 stars, I would. I love the characters and the storylines. I devoured this book; I could not put it down until I reached the end. The storyline was heartbreaking, heartwarming and original. This book is a contemporary romance with a golden retriever MMC and a feisty FMC. There is drama, hilarity, angst, and best friends-to-epic relationship goals. I thought the characters were complex and had an undeniable chemistry that spanned their lifetime. Claire Hastings is at the top of my favorite authors. Her writing style is fun and captivating, and she writes beautifully with just the right amount of detail. I love that she seems to know my favorite music genres and movies because she includes them in her stories. It will literally take me back to those moments. I have to watch the movie again or take a trip down memory lane with the music. Thank you for quoting Casper in this book Claire, I loved Devan Sawa as a teen and watched that movie constantly. "Can I keep you?"
Dolly is a free spirit and I loved her attitude and her loyalty to Hux. She was quick-witted and had me laughing a few times. My heart broke for her but I loved her ability to pick up her bootstraps and go on. Huxley was intense and determined. I thought his devotion to Dolly was swoon-worthy and had my heart fluttering a few times. I enjoyed their journey to get where they were going. I laughed, cried and fist pumped a few times in this book. I can't wait to see what Claire Hastings has in store for us next!!!!
Tropes: 💕 Friends to lovers 💕 Small town romance 💕 Left at the altar 💕 Spicy 💕 Found family
Claire has done it again with her writing, sucked me in and made me fall in love with more characters. Sundown Somewhere is book 3 in Hayes Family series and it follows best friends Huxley (Hux) and Dolly’s love story.
Dolly is left at the altar and it’s Hux’s job as the Man of Honor, to inform her, but how do you tell her best friend such horrible news?! After being left Dolly tries to move on with her life but it’s getting overwhelming. Hux has an idea to take her away for some fun.
Hux is so swoony, I’m not gonna lie. He is the ultimate best friend, boyfriend, brother. He has a huge heart and he will protect the people he cares about. Hux will do anything for Dolly to make her happy and see that smile on her face. Even if it means being mischievous just like old times. Dolly, ohh my gosh, Dolly is the sweetest person, even going through a major life change she hasn’t lost herself. Though she really struggles with her self worth and insecurities, luckily she has her friends and family, especially Hux, to get her through it.
This small town romance was phenomenally written. It is full of the small town magic and southern charm to make you fall in love. Claire writes such captivating, funny, and emotional reads. You will laugh, cry, swoon, and fall in love with each and every one of the characters, including side characters. I loved watching the development of their relationship, watching their feelings evolve from friends to lovers was organic and easily relatable. The text chains between the siblings and their mother are hilarious. You will definitely be all in your feels with this one.
This is the Hayes Family Series book I’ve been impatiently waiting for! Hux and Dolly have popped up in several of Claire Hasting’s books, so we already know they’ve been best friends since childhood—and that Dolly was engaged to a man Hux definitely wasn’t a fan of.
The story kicks off on Dolly’s wedding day, where her Man of Honor, Hux, ends up being the one to break her heart when things don’t go as planned. But the real twist? Dolly isn’t as heartbroken as she expected. Now, Hux is on a mission to help her pick up the pieces, spending even more time with her and realizing he needs to bring back the Dolly he knows and loves. So what does he do? Plans a getaway—just the two of them.
With drinks flowing, secrets spilling, and confessions flying, the tension is real. Do they cross that friendship line? Oh, you’ll have to read to find out! I swooned so many times, especially when Hux finally reveals his reasons for everything he’s done. The push and pull, the will-they-won’t-they, the fear of ruining their friendship—it’s all there. But let’s be honest, the whole town, their friends, and their families already know these two belong together.
Of course, there’s drama (and some hilarious reverse psychology gone wrong), but Hux’s unwavering devotion to Dolly—and that gift—make this story even more special. And whatever you do, don’t skip the extended epilogue! It’s packed with all the feels.
Hux and Dolly might just be my favorite, but I loved seeing the entire Hayes clan and the familiar faces of Hickory Hills again. I cannot wait to see what’s next!
Hux and Dolly have been best friends since the third grade. So close that the town thought they would one day marry. The next best thing is being her 'man of honor.' Because whatever his Doll wants, she gets. He just never thought he'd have the blessing/curse of delivering the news that her fiancé is ditching her on their wedding day.
Finding out that she has put all her efforts and love towards a man who had just strung her along for 6 years has left Dolly feeling about as loved as 4 day old pizza. When her best friend decides that it's high time for an escape to get up to no good, she is on board. It's been years since she could just be herself.
How was she to know that the weekend would reveal secrets that will change everything? Is this something she can trust, since she knows Hux is such a playboy, and she is nothing like his regular conquests? Can they keep their fling a secret, or will the entire town and the rumor mill ruin their friendship?
I absolutely loved everything about these two. Hux and Dolly are top of the line hilarious and equally hot and steamy! Everything about this best friends to lovers romance is a fairytale that will have you wishing on that second star to the right!
Hux and Dolly have been best friends and partners in crime since they co-starred in the 3rd grade play as Peter Pan and Wendy. They both love each other and have had a lot of "what if" thoughts over the years but both are frightened about losing the other if they change their relationship. When Dolly is jilted at the altar by the guy she was settling for and Hux jumps in to take care of her, each is prompted to acknowledge their feelings.
This is a very sweet and likable couple and readers will want them to realize that they are each other's happily ever after. (I did get a little frustrated when Dolly worried about whether her judgment was flawed and both worried about whether they were good enough for the other.)
It takes place in a small town and the action centers around simple events, like building a playground, changing the local cafe's menu, a Memorial Day parade and fishing. This was the first book that I read by Hastings and it works as a standalone. There are lots of characters and context references from her earlier books.
Claire Hastings delivers a heartwarming and steamy friends-to-lovers romance in Sundown Somewhere. Set in a charming small town, this story follows Huxley and Dolly—best friends who have always been there for each other, sharing their dreams and secrets. But when a wedding fiasco shakes things up, their relationship takes a thrilling turn. Huxley is the ultimate bad boy with a heart of gold—tattooed, irresistibly dirty-mouthed, yet fiercely loyal and caring. Dolly, on the other hand, is sassy, sharp-witted, and undeniably lovable. Their chemistry is electric, filled with playful banter, sizzling tension, and just the right amount of angst. Watching them navigate their evolving feelings makes for an engaging and satisfying read. With witty dialogue, endearing characters, and a swoon-worthy romance, this book is a delightful escape. It’s a fantastic, feel-good read that will leave you smiling. If you love small-town romance with a dash of spice, this one’s for you! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book
I always know that when I pick up a romance by Claire Hastings, I’m in for a story that will tick all my boxes—and Sundown Somewhere (Hayes Family Book 3) absolutely delivered! This has to be one of the best best-friends-to-lovers romances I’ve read in a long time.
Hux is pure swoon-worthy book boyfriend perfection. When his best friend, Dolly, gets left at the altar, his role as Man of Honor suddenly takes on a whole new meaning. In a small town where gossip spreads like wildfire, Dolly finds herself at the centre of it all—but what everyone around them has always known is that these two were destined for each other.
My heart absolutely melted over the surprise Hux had been working on, and when the passion between them finally ignited? Off-the-charts chemistry! But what truly stole my heart was watching Hux rebuild Dolly’s confidence after the devastating letter from her ex. The way he loved her, cherished her, and proved that she was always meant to be his had me seeing stars.
Claire Hastings has delivered yet another heartfelt, steamy, and utterly satisfying romance. Sundown Somewhere is the perfect read for anyone who loves small-town charm, best-friends-to-lovers tension, and a hero who will make you weak in the knees. A must-read!
Thank you Foreward PR and Marketing for my ARC of Sundown Somewhere! Overall, this book was okay. I did like the relationship between the FMC and our MMC. It’s always refreshing when our leading lady has a real big girl job and aspirations! I do feel like this could have been more developed, though, and their relationship seemed to move a little fast without a lot of build up from their past. I feel like the book could have done well if we saw more “15 years ago” chapters instead of quick summaries of events they’ve shared. This is also the first Hayes family novel I’ve read, so I felt a little lost with all the side characters. Having 7 Hayes siblings seems like a lot of work to juggle and our main characters tend to get lost in the updates of managing all the siblings and their partners.. maybe it would feel differently if I had started at book 1? That being said, my favorite trope is friends to lovers and the spice level was great!
I love friends to lovers romance stories and Ms. Hastings has delivered one that is sweet, captivating, full of witty banter and a love that finally bloomed between best friends. As I turned the pages of Hux and Dolly's story, Hux showed he was the perfect book boyfriend and one man who wears his heart on his sleeve. Dolly, after being left at the alter, faces the truth that Hux "is the man in her life". He has always been there for her and would do anything for her. She has been at the top of his list since they were friends at the age of nine. These two are soulmates and it took being left at the alter and being swept away to finally see the love they both deserved has always been right in front of them. Sundown Somewhere is the perfect love story to read when you are looking for a feel-good romance that puts a smile on your face.
Huxley Hayes is one man we all want on our side. He will do anything for his family and his best friend Dolly. What he doesn't want to do is tell her that the man she's about to walk down the aisle to is gone. Dolly has been waiting for this day for years, and it is finally here. Getting married is what she wants, along with running her busy diner. When Hux tells her what happens, he offers her a chance to get away. To heal, but what happens is so much more. When feelings are revealed and doubts start to in what will happen? Hux has always thought he wasn't good enough for anything more than being her best friend. But things are revealed, and these two will fall harder than ever. However, not all things are happy, and they will have to figure out if this is something they want to pursue even if it threatens their friendship.
Dolly and Hux were so worth the wait!! I have been waiting to see these two best friends get together since we first met them ages ago and was dying to see how it would play out since Dolly was unavailable. This was so great.
Dolly has been left at the alter by her ex and when her man of honor and best friend Hux takes her out of town to escape, the best kind of chaos ensues as a drunken night leads to them finally confronting their feelings.
The way Hux has quietly loved Dolly for years was so sweet, always looking out for her, supporting her, and loving her while thinking he could never have her and wasn’t good enough, was so sweet. The relationship between these two was adorable, from childhood best friends with a pinky promise to never date each other, to breaking that promise so hard as adults when they finally get together.
Sundown Somewhere is Hux and Dolly’s best friend’s to lovers story and it’s a Hayes Family Book. It’s a captivating and heartwarming read set in the small town of Hickory Hills. Hux has just had to tell his best friend that she is being left at the alter and watching Dolly’s heart break just about tore him apart. So to escape the small town rumour mill and to help Dolly try and put her life back together he takes her away for a weekend…. But what happens when one too many drinks leads to kisses and secrets being revealed. This is a captivating and entertaining read, it’s well written with wonderful characters and it ticked all my boxes. I loved the story, I loved the characters and I love Hickory Hills and its quirky residents.
