THE FIRST SIGNS that I might like writing -- and that I might be slightly competitive -- appeared when my year two (or first grade) teacher, Mrs. Holland, asked my class to write and illustrate our day. Mine read like this: “The Red team beat the Blue team, 1 to nil. And I won.” The next 47 entries covered my exploits on the soccer pitch while growing up in Ipswich, England.

In South Carolina as a teenager, my dad told me that I could get paid to watch sports provided I could write about it. Sounded easy enough and by the time I was 16, I landed a job at my town’s daily newspaper and had a column on Major League Baseball players from our area. I also covered my first riot there at a sporting event -- and it’s safe to say I was smitten with journalism.

After graduating from one of the best journalism schools in the country, I took a job as a sports editor in South Georgia and learned firsthand about the passion of high school sports in rural America. I thought I knew before, but I didn’t. This was another world.

I also had the opportunity to cover major sporting events like the Olympic Games, the World Series, the Super Bowl, and the Final Four. It was a thrill!

But nothing was as thrilling to me as uncovering the truth in investigative assignments. I once broke a story about a prominent southern football team’s NCAA violation -- and found out the violating coach had committed suicide only a few months earlier. The story won a national writing award and stoked my desire to write about these issues. It made me realize that the sports world was just another fantastic backdrop for drama.

After writing non-fiction books with athletes, for athletes, and ghost writing for many others, I decided to enter the world of fiction writing. It had been something I wanted to do but never found the time. So, I made the time--and had a blast in the process.

I’m not out to become the next Faulkner or Hemingway -- I’m just out to tell a good story. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them!

The latest and best action-packed story in The Phoenix Chronicles!

Loyal Traitor is the 42nd book by R.J. Patterson that I’ve read and reviewed. After 41 books you might assume I’d be able to predict where each story is going and how it will resolve the various story arcs. But what I’ve found is the opposite. Each new book not only leaves me fully entertained but keeps me fully engaged through the action and intrigue with each story.

Loyal Traitor takes its reader to multiple continents where the characters are involved in non-stop action. Speaking of the characters, every one of those in RJ’s books is fully developed, very believable, and each with their own personal eccentricities.

This book ties up some of the loose ends from the beginning of the series, but as it closes those loops, more loose ends are revealed giving the reader comfort knowing there will be more of The Phoenix Chronicles stories in the future.

I received an Advance Reader Copy of Loyal Traitor from the author and chose to provide my review.

An excellent international thriller with a realistic storyline and strong believable characters. Contains plenty on non-stop action, lots of suspense, and even intrigue. Very enjoyable read with Brady Hawk and the Phoenix Chronicles cast of characters. A financial warfare thriller that I highly recommend. Bring on the next adventure with Brady Hawk.

This book has both Brady and Alex in the field but not together. They are both working to stop the financial world from collapsing. Contains plenty on non-stop action, lots of suspense and on the edge of your seat reading. This book was hard to put down because you just had to see what happened next. I have really enjoyed all of Mr. Pattersons books.

disappointing

I have loved this series and greatly looked forward to this edition. However the book was very slow. Not the usual twists and hang onto the rails excitement. I hope the next book returns to more of the original character.

RJ has done it again. Another great tale about Brady Hawk and his crew. This one involves the scariness of AI, so it's got a different twist on it. Still great characters and a solid plot.
