ARC Review

Thank you to the author for a copy of Embermere in exchange for an honest review. These are my thoughts....

This is a no spoilers review.

Ok, so first things first... sometimes I go months just reading books on my list and other times I'm flooded with ARC review requests. When Embermere hit my inbox, I was 4 other ARCs deep and was like what the heck is happening here?! If I'm being honest, I don't even remember requesting Embermere. I probably did or maybe the author found me. Either way.... I sure am happy this book fell into my inbox.

I love just about any genre despite pure romance. Romance between humans- ick. Romance between faeries or other supernatural creatures- fantastic. Don't ask me to explain, I don't understand it myself. However, horror.... true horror, will always be my favorite. It's where I started my reading journey and I think it's one of the hardest genres to pull off. So when it's done well... I'm all in.

This story follows Ruby and Paul, a young couple that moves into a new neighborhood where the neighbors are overly friendly. The neighbors are like that creepy Stepford village creepy where they all have the fake plastic smiles plastered on their faces and they seem almost robotic. Ruby and Paul hear humors of supposed cannibalism and their creepy neighbor Helen in always trying to feed them. Ruby starts to discover that the food turns to black goop if it's not eaten quickly and the couple realizes that this place and the neighbors are up to something.

The events of the story take place at the factory where Paul works, the diner where Ruby waitresses and the street of Embermere where the characters live. There is gore, suspense and creepy ick scenes to round out the book. I'm going to keep the plot summary short because I don't want to ruin a second of this story for anyone.

The feel of this book gave me vibes like Question Not My Salt, another one of my favorite horror reads. I don't think there's anything creepier than dolls or a Stepford neighborhood. Well, other than E.T. He's a creepy little jerkface and nothing will ever scare me more than E.T. but, that's a story for another day.

I devoured this book in one sitting and it's one that I'll definitely think about and suggest to horror readers. This is a 🌮🌮🌮🌮🌮 read!

I couldn't find the release date on this one but, Mikayla has two other books on Kindle Unlimited or available on Amazon. I suspect these would be great reads for our quick approaching Friday the 13th day coming up this month!

Go check her out and when Embermere releases, grab yourself a copy!

Embermere by Mikayla Buckman
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This is a fantastic, creepy/horror book. It grabbed me from page 1 and had non stop excitement, thrills and suspense all the way through.
Paul & Ruby move from the city to a small town, Embermere, for a quieter life. However, they quickly find out that there’s something not quite right with the neighbors and that’s when weird and crazy things start to happen. There’s just enough weirdness, scariness and good amount of creep to keep me totally sucked in! The intensity remained high through the whole read!

This is my first book from this author and I can’t wait to read more. The story is very well written, has great character development and is overall an awesome read!

Thank you to Mikayla Buckman for an arc copy of this amazing book!
*A definite must read!! It comes out October 1st! Don’t miss this one!!*

Mikayla Buckman does it again!!!! I absolutely loved this book! It was a fun and wild ride. It was very descriptive. You could picture the whole book while reading along. There were many twists and turns, I never knew what was going to happen next. I was guessing the whole book. The ending was amazing, not ledt on a cliffhanger, a satisfying ending that you can be content with. I highly recommend this book and this author. She does not disappoint!

As someone who has a million theories and is typically good at figuring out the endings of books with context clues, this one FLOORED ME! She gives you the pieces, but my gosh it was beyond a jigsaw puzzle to piece together on your own. My typical who-done-it attitude turned into a "What the heck just happened!? I need to know more!!" I put my detective hat aside at some point and just gave myself to the experience. Page after page, I dove deeper into the horrors on Embermore. It was an absolute wild ride.

As far as the writing style, with each page turn, I was more and more excited to see the artistry of phrase that Mikayla would write next. It's effortlessly cleaver, uniquely written to really make you feel engrossed in not just what's being said, but HOW it's being said. If you're thinking of reading this book, read the first chapter. If you like the style it only gets better from there.

(4.5 stars) Multiple POVs; a mix of Smile, Get Out, and Don't Worry Darling; chilling, eerie, and gory, with sci-fi aspects; a thrilling and unnerving page-turner of a ride; loved the insane amount of twists; amazing writing; the pace and build-up of the story was perfect; a great book for spooky season that leaves a feeling of unease.

Special thank you to Mikayla Buckman for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review 🖤

My third adventure through the twisted and creative world of Mikayla Buckman, and, once again, I was not disappointed. Mikayla’s creativity has no boundaries, and the result is a complex web of twists and turns that somehow result in a beautiful and colorful tapestry. Her writing is as addictive as scary. What a turmoil this book was!

The setting was just perfect for the Halloween season coming soon. Set in the 1950’s, we’re introduced to the most captivating street in a quiet neighborhood, filled with neighbors that act like family, welcoming the new owners of one of the houses to their community. But Ruby and Paul soon start wondering about the normality of it all. Everything seems out of place. Every person seems to act in the most awkward way. And when dark secrets from the past start rising in the present, their safety is on the line.

I pictured Embermere Circle. I envisioned the houses, the inhabitants, the scenes. I felt all the fear, smelled all the rotting, saw every gore. Mikayla’s descriptions are vivid, raw and cruel. There are body parts, blood and mayhem everywhere. And although it is fantasy at its best, it’s the kind of fantasy that keeps you at the edge of your seat, craving for more.

Thank you so much for this ARC. This is an honest and personal review.

I enjoyed the overall aspect of this story. A fun horror story as well as grotesque! Great for spooky season!

Set in the 1950’s, Ruby and Paul move to a new house on Embermere. However, something is off with the neighbors. Often staring and with sinister smiles, they come bringing food. (Don’t eat the food!!!!) After many strange circumstances and secrets uncovered, they unearth the horrors that have taken over! In a race against time, they must figure out what is this evil is and how to destroy it! Can it be destroyed? Will they survive Embermere?

Thank you to the author for allowing me to ARC.

ARC Review:

Let me just say, I love this type of literature and tend to lean towards this genre a lot when choosing books to read. They're my guilty pleasure. I like thrillers that mix with a little mystery because they're fast-paced and usually end up being page turners. This book was just that.

The author does a great job of setting up the story and the mystique of the new neighborhood the main characters move into. You quickly find yourself becoming engulfed as you join the characters in trying to figure out exactly what has happened in this little cul-de-sac. More twists and turns appear throughout the book until you find yourself barreling to a very startling end.

My only complaints for this book was that it felt rushed in some places and maybe a little forced. Some of the moments just felt off to me, and then the ending seemed like it was wrapped up very quickly, whereas I may have liked to have gotten a little more clarification on things. Also, there were some typos or small grammatical things, but I know that tends to be a personal thing for me more than others, so I didn't let it affect my rating. I also have great admiration for indie authors and like to be more forgiving when rating their work.

Overall, I would certainly recommend this book for a read, especially with the Halloween season coming. It's a nice quick little read that'll get you in the mood for spooky season.

If I had to choose one word to describe this book, it would be unsettling.

I felt unsettled throughout the entirety of the story. It's creepy, gory, and nightmarish.
The first few chapters had some kind of repetitiveness to them (not enough to steer you away, but enough to take notice), BUT stick it out...it gets GOOD. It's kind of a slow-burn type, but I thought it mirrored well with the whole building the dread and eerie feelings of the storyline. The last handful of chapters are wildddd and the pace definitely quickens. To be honest, those last handful of chapters had my heart racing and I couldn't read them fast enough!

Ever seen the movie The Birds? It was a movie we watched my freshman year of high school in my English class and it ruined me. I had PTSD reading this book and The Birds was all I could think of at any mention of a crow (remember, all the unsettling and eerie vibes previously mentioned + the crow). And wow, the scene... you'll know when you get there - I was subconsciously reading with my shoulders hunched. Eek!
Tip: pay attention to the crow on the chapter headers. So neat.

Something ain't right about these people, and I think you should read Embermere to find out what they're hiding!!

I was lucky enough to be sent a copy of this CRAZY book by Mikayla and wow does it pack a punch!!

I LOVED the setting that the book was built on and truly felt transported in time! I was hooked very early on and my attention was kept most of the time. I loved learning about all the different characters and some scenes made me want to hide under my duvet and never come out 🤣 I will NEVER look at cocoons the same again:) I loved our FMC as wellas Jack (Is he hot?? He sounds hot 😭).

The reason this was not a 5 star for me is because there were some moments (for me personally) that felt too far fetched and took away from the immersion for me (it’s hard to explain what I mean without spoilers but regarding people not questioning certain events and behaviour sooner etc).

Other than that, this was a wild ride and genuinely had me creeped out.

Anyone who knows me knows i LOVE a small town horror book and I would highly recommend this book to fans of horror, otherworldly beings and just straight up creepyness!!

This is my first book from this author and I will certainly be reading more!🫶🏼

Wow wow wow! This was one of the most disturbing but fun horror novels I’ve ever read. Lots of body horror and plot twists. The plot twists just kept on coming down to the last page. Embermere by Mikayla Buckman is a gripping horror novel that combines atmospheric tension with compelling character development. Set in the eerie town of Embermere, the novel introduces Paul and Ruby, a couple who move into their dream home but find themselves in the town’s dark and mysterious secrets.

What stands out most about Embermere is its slow-burn tension. Buckman builds a chilling atmosphere, gradually revealing the town’s sinister secrets while keeping readers hooked with unsettling twists.

The pacing, while deliberate, might feel slow at times, but it effectively mirrors the creeping dread of the story. I will say that the ending does leave me with more questions, but, this ambiguity also adds to the eerie tone of the story.

Overall, Embermere is a standout for fans of psychological horror, offering a deeply unsettling experience that will stick with you.

I don't even know where to start.

Ruby, the FMC, moves to the small town of Embermere with her husband, Paul, who was offered a job as a maintenance tech at steel plant. They immediately notice the weird smiles their neighbors, Helen and Walter, have when introducing themselves. Ruby starts working at the local diner. While they have weird neighbors, everything else seems great.

Until they hear disturbing rumors, strange things occur (like food turning goopy if not immediately eaten), gruesome murders, and their neighbors are way beyond the normal limit of weird.

The first chapter hooked me, and the book just kept getting better. There was so much tension, I felt I could snap like a tightly pulled wire, but I couldn't let go. The neighbors reminded me of the "Smile" movie, and the short horror films on Youtube called "Don't Look Away" and "Let Me In".

If you enjoy gore, horror, and overwhelming icks, this is for you.
Also, love the chapter headers!
