For Garreth Young and his older brother Edgar, every single day of their lives is a struggle to survive a painful game under their abusive parents' roof. Whether it's being beaten, burned, or starved, there's only one thing that keeps their hopes of happiness alive: Freedom.
But when someone takes the game too far, Garreth is left with the secret of that terrible night and the threat of death if he should ever speak of it.
Until eight years later, a newcomer named Alisha Bales moves into his rural Kentucky town. She offers him the chance to become someone braver, someone stronger, someone free. But facing his fears could be a lot more difficult than he thought, especially with the deadly secret he's kept for eight years... a secret he's finally ready to tell.
Got this book for free but I would have happily paid for it!!!!
I got this book not expecting much just something to read and pass the time while on a long flight but was I glad that I got it! The author did a great job of making you feel for the characters. Their emotions, fears, insecurities and happiness. This is the first book I've read from this author but it won't be the last! I Look forward to your future releases.
Very emotional story. It brought me to tears several times throughout the book. What can I say about Garreth? This kid had more strength than I had at his age. It's a hard story to read, but a necessary one to tell. Loved Alisha. Hoping there is a continuation to this story.
