At eleven, she fell in love with reading Sunfire Historical Romances about girls who made a difference in their lives and still fell in love. Then in high school, a friend introduced her to Lavyrle Spencer and Judith McNaught, and those stories cemented her writing journey to telling stories about love. Maci writes in Hawaiʻi where she lives with her husband, their children, and their fur-babies. This is her 8th novel.

Spoiler-free Summary: Professor Ruby has one final chance to save her research: beg for a financial grant from the patriarch of the highly secretive Roan Family. Alone, she ventures to their cursed island after Hammish Roan agrees to host her until their Solstice party. She was expecting an easily manipulated elderly man cushioned by his wealth. What she found was a dangerous man and his devious sons, one of which stirs her very soul. Noah Roan needs to get Ruby off their island immediately, lest his inner beast take over and claim her the way they both want.
Thoughts: This was such an intriguing mix of paranormal, gothic, and regency romance vibes! It has the same plot structures as one of my favorite historical romance set-ups, the infamous house party forced proximity, but instead of sweetly stollen glances across the ball room, this story is full of dark eyes and sharp teeth. I loved the darker twist!
Professor Ruby is such a fun mix of feminine strength, academic intelligence, and sassy badassery! I loved that she was researching on the behalf of womankind, and that she was willing to do nearly anything to seek answers. Noah is a highly interesting, incredibly alluring creature of darkness and possession. I don’t want to reveal too much about his monstrous nature, but I can assure you that he is devious, dark, and beautiful — the perfect predator. Seeing him turn from a surly, stoic man bent on ignoring Ruby to a creature obsessed was *chefs kiss*
I was so very intrigued by the lore in this regarding the Roan family and their history, and really appreciated all of the little details that brought the story to life. I definitely think PNR and gothic romance readers will enjoy Ruby and Noah’s seductive story!
I really enjoyed this gothic and mysterious story. And the paranormal element made it even better!
Professor Ruby Rose accepts an invitation to Roan Island in pursuit of a grant to keep her employed at the university. She’s met with a spooky house and grumpy man, Noah Roan. He’s determined to get her off the island, but Ruby needs a grant from his father and she wants to research in their library.
As secrets unravel, Noah and Ruby become closer. There’s an undeniable pull between them and I loved the tension. I won’t reveal any more 👀 and I hope you’re intrigued enough to pick this one up!
Thank you so much to the authors for the opportunity to read The Secrets of Roan Island early.
Whew this was intense! Ruby was intelligent and bold, but had PTSD that caused panic attacks and flashbacks that she had to work through while visiting in a creepy gothic manor. Noah was grumpy and cynical, with a possessive streak He wanted to protect Ruby in his own not very nice fashion, which led to several arguments between the two. The stakes were high and it was dark and violent. The plot was engaging as well.

This is a spicy, gothic-vibes tale set in a moody mansion teeming with secrets, danger, and plenty of temptation. It’s a quick and entertaining read for those who are interested in dipping their toes into the dark romance genre.
The gothic vibes are spot on and there is enough weight to the story to make it interesting. The characters are interesting, with most having more nuanced personalities than the story might initially suggest.
Ruby is a headstrong and determined protagonist and a solid character whose mix of ambition and curiosity gets her tangled in the Roan family’s web of secrets. Her relationship with Noah Roan leans heavily into instant lust, which might feel a little superficial for readers who crave slower, personality-driven romances. Still, the chemistry is undeniable, and their dynamic plays into the sultry tone of the story. It’s worth noting that there’s more plot and intrigue here than in some darker romances which was a bonus! My favorites were Ruby and Shemaiah and I kiiind of wish this was THEIR love story, but I love a softer touch.
Ultimately, The Secrets of Roan Island delivers a blend of suspense, sensuality, and gothic charm that’s easy to devour. It’s a cozy, spooky read best enjoyed with a blanket and a penchant for mysterious mansions and dangerous romance.

♾️⭐️/🌶️🌶️🌶️ Let me catch my breath…😮💨 I literally just finished the book and came straight away to leave a review.
So, I finished this book in one day. And LET 👏🏼ME👏🏼TELL👏🏼YOU👏🏼 I was blown away!! I was at the edge of my seat (or page) the whole time.
The book constantly made me think of the movie The Haunting and Crimson Peak. The whole dark and gothic vibe was everything🖤🖤🖤
I want to go back in time and reread it again for the first time 😭
I can’t wait to read more in this series!!!
My only complaint? I wanted this book to be in three parts so I could get more of Noah and Ruby and stay in this world for longer! 😭
Thank you Maci Aurora and Thea Masen for the e-arc. This is my first time reading a book from Thea, but Maci is an author I LOVE. So if she was collaborating with someone, I knew it was going to be good. I’m honored to have been provided with the arc♥️♥️♥️♥️
The vibes of this book were IMMACULATE. I truly felt like I was in the gothic setting with the characters.
I had so much fun reading this book and it was such a quick read. The writing was fast paced and easy to follow along with. I really liked the characters, Noah was ~everything~
I was engulfed in the story and trying to figure out what the hell was going to happen. I loved the twists and how Ruby was assisting the Roan brothers. I cannot wait for the next book!
The Secrets of Roan Island felt new and refreshing but at the same time, it felt like a comforting gothic read. I definitely recommend if you’re looking for a quick gothic romance set on an island filled with secrets of the paranormal variety.
This was really good. I loved the characters. Ruby was strong without being annoying. A relatable strong. The brothers were great together. I loved the dynamic and I am interested to learn more about them in the future books. Noah was, of course, everything. There were twists and turns and some of them really surprised me. There was action and so much went down at the end of the book. I was really invested in this story and stayed up way too late reading this. I had to know how it would end. I will say, I expected this to be darker based on the triggers, so if they are holding you back, you may want to reconsider 😊

4.5⭐️ 3🌶️
I really enjoyed this book! It really felt like you were immersed in the this dark and mysterious world. It has a gothic, Victorian era vibe , a creepy mansion on a remote island, three mysterious brothers, a Strong MFC professor, some paranormal elements and a broody but sexy “MMC Noah” 😍 And to me this book gave off “Crimson Peak” or “Penny Dreadful “ vibes!! Loved it! 😍 The slow burn and chemistry between “Noah & Ruby” was so good! Even though I felt scared for Ruby .. I was glad it ended well between her and Noah. Overall I really enjoyed this dark gothic romance and I’m curious to see what happens in the next book!! 🖤🖤🖤🖤
I really enjoyed this book! A secret island with creatures supposed to be extinct and romance? COUNT ME IN! I loved the story with the murder mystery as well. It was very fast paced and the story flowed great which made it a quick easy read! The tension in this book was delicious. The roan boys were so much fun (minus Hammish) and Ruby was amazing. I look forward to more books (hopefully) to see how the brothers stories play out!
This was so perfectly moody, mysterious, and sexy. Professor Ruby Rose goes to Roan island in hopes of getting funding and doing some research and discovers that the house and the Roan family have many secrets. The vibes are gothic, romantic, and paranormal.
Highly recommend if you like broody morally grey MMCs.
I don't want to share too much more because a lot of the fun and secrets are best left for you to learn but do check the content warnings.
Thank you to the authors for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I ATE THIS BOOK UP. Demolished it. One of my top ten reads of the year. Professor Ruby had my heart as soon as she climbed that fence into the estate. Smart, determined, stubborn, and constantly searching for answers, she’s a total badass ahead of her time and officially one of my fave FMCs ever. And then, there are the mysterious Roan brothers and their enigmatic father that live on the island with hardly any contact with the surrounding towns. Noah Roan (enter tall, dark, and mysterious) is tasked with ‘helping’ Ruby and LET ME TELL YOU - the tension between these two will leave you begging BEGGING for something, anything, the slow burn BURNING, and you will be grateful for the smallest morsel of contact between these two. And when the big reveal happens, and these two finally collide, BE READY TO SCREAM INTO THAT PILLOW. This is a gothic, paranormal romance work of art.
In "The Secrets of Roan Island," we journey alongside Professor Ruby Rose, a once-respected scholar now cast aside by her colleagues. Desperate for a lifeline, she sets her sights on a grant from the elusive philanthropist Hammish Roan. Instead, she’s drawn into the enigmatic world of Roan Island itself, steeped in shadow and intrigue. As Ruby explores the haunting mansion and its mysterious residents, she finds herself entangled with Noah Roan, the brooding eldest son, whose own hidden past begins to unravel. Their simmering chemistry juxtaposed with the island's eerie happenings weaves a nail-biting tale that keeps readers riveted to the page.
The characters in The Secrets of Roan Island come to life with stunning complexity and depth. Ruby Rose shines as a fierce and astute scholar, her insatiable curiosity and unwavering determination propelling the narrative into thrilling territory. Meanwhile, Noah Roan's enigmatic and brooding presence injects a delicious tension into the tale. Their chemistry unfolds organically, creating an enthralling dynamic that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. The supporting cast, particularly the members of the Roan family, is intricately crafted, each adding a tantalizing layer to the unfolding intrigue. Hammish Roan emerges as a captivating villain, evoking a satisfying loathing that enhances the reading experience, while the surprise entrance of Zarah Roan introduces an enticing twist that keeps the storyline fresh and exciting.
Thea Masen and Maci Aurora craft their prose with an enchanting touch that pulls readers deep into their world. They artfully intertwine gothic motifs with a steampunk vibe, forging a setting that's both distinctive and richly atmospheric. Their vivid descriptions breathe life into Roan Island, transforming it into a captivating character all on its own. The dialogue crackles with energy, brilliantly reflecting the characters' feelings and desires. I found myself completely immersed in this fantastical realm, side by side with the characters as they unraveled the mysteries that lay before them.
The novel weaves a rich tapestry of themes such as solitude, ambition, and the quest for understanding. It examines the ripple effects of hidden truths and the extremes to which people will stretch to safeguard or unearth them. The writers also shine a light on the complexities of familial bonds and how echoes of past wounds shape today's choices. These motifs are intricately blended into the storyline, enriching the journey with layers of insight and stirring contemplation.
The writers weave a tapestry of literary artistry to elevate their narrative. Through the clever use of foreshadowing, they weave a suspenseful thread that keeps readers on edge, while flashbacks illuminate the characters’ motivations and history. By alternating between Ruby and Noah’s viewpoints, the story dives deep into their inner worlds, revealing their emotions and challenges, thus deepening our grasp of their relationship and the enigmatic plot that unravels before us.
The rhythm of the book dances gracefully, escalating tension in a delightful crescendo that culminates in a thrilling and fulfilling conclusion. With its cleverly divided chapters and fluid perspective shifts, the narrative remains not only captivating but also effortlessly navigable. The authors masterfully weave a sense of urgency throughout, ensuring that character growth and narrative clarity thrive hand in hand.
"The Secrets of Roan Island captivates readers with its effortlessly flowing narrative that hooks you from the very first page and never lets go. Its language strikes a perfect balance, easy to digest yet vibrant with nuance, appealing to all kinds of book lovers. With a delightful mix of romance, intrigue, and gothic flair, this tale promises to enchant a diverse array of readers.
In a nutshell, The Secrets of Roan Island is a spellbinding gem that weaves a delightful tapestry of mystery, romance, and gothic allure. With its rich character arcs, hauntingly beautiful backdrop, and a plot that pulls you in from the get-go, this novel truly shines. Professor Ruby Rose is on a mission to secure grant money in order to continue holding her position at Essik College. As the Colleges outcast she cannot afford to turn a single lead or offer down. So when a cryptic invitation from the wealthy philanthropist Hammish Roan comes for her to have an extended monthly stay upon his secluded island estate she immediately accepts, seeing it as a chance to secure her funds needed as well as an opportunity to search the famed Roan library. However upon arrival she is met by not only the cold winter chill but also the haunting manors strange occupants. Especially her watch dog of an escort the egnimatic oldest Roan son, Noah. Determined to watch her every step she finds herself never alone. The longer she stays and the closer the days get to Winter solstice the more she begins to believe the Roan family are hiding dark and sinister secrets. Ones she is dying to uncover.
I went into this book immediately excited as I’m a big fan of gothic period pieces with dark romance and loads of Victorian era vibes. Add in the fact it’s setting is a secluded island in the beginnings of the winter months and I knew it was the perfect book to wrap up November. And wow did this not disappoint! Not only was I gifted the dark gothic atmosphere I was promised but so much more. We follow along with our academic FMC Professor Ruby Rose as she’s thrust into the world of the Roan family thats filled with dark halls, hidden passageways, old mythology, ancient libraries, and of course our morally grey broody and possessive MMC Noah Roan. By chapter 4 there slowly begin to be tiny hints as to what deeper secrets are lurking among the Roan households patriarch and sons. I can’t give too much away as the reveals and twist are just far too good. Just trust that these monstrous reveals are so worth it and took this read up a notch for me as I do love a book with a bit of lore. The romance and tension between our MCs was perfectly dark, moody, spicy, and also laced with a bit of danger. Bottom line I just had a lot of fun reading this genre blended book that oozed all the gothic charm I devour. If your a fan of mysterious gothic manors, long held family secrets, hidden identities, stubborn and strong willed academic FMCs, and possessive and “monstrous” morally grey MMCs then you should definitely check out this book this winter.
✨️Review: Well this was a wicked fun and intoxicating ride! I am so happy I happened across this ARC! This gothic romance oozes with all the delights attributed to classic gothic romance with bits of supernatural horror thrown in the mix. Evocative in tone with its victorian setting, we are treated to a mysterious, beautiful brooding family of men, led by a rather nefarious patriarch.
Candlelit corridors, velvety draped darkness, splashes of incandescent light in a garden, angry wrought iron gates... the landscape is brought to rich life and one can feel it with all senses.
Noah, our angst ridden eldest son of the Roan family, is stricken with secrets and afflictions that come to light in the most enticing way. Seeing his struggles, his inner fight against his own beastly natures, is the stuff I live for! High tension scenes between him and Ruby just clutched my heart with suspense and forbidden desire and fascination.
I don't want to give much away because the mystery & suspense took me by surprise but there are some twists to traditional supernatural elements that lends this an original supremely satisfying iteration. The world and the family of characters are all incredibly delineated and compelling to watch.
Ruby is a forward thinking, strong woman and I loved how she dove forward without fear because she was following her heart and instincts. I'm so happy that this alludes to book two in the epilogue because I can't wait to read the next brother's story!
A gothic romance lovers dream, this story unfolds its spell with delicate character development, a lush isolated location, a potent mystery, thrilling encounters and a high stakes love story that earns its HEA. This is something is re reread because you'd pick up on more subtleties the second time around! I have a compulsion to visit Roan Island and find me one of those brothers for myself because I am smitten!
The Secrets of Roan Island is a Gothic Fantasy/ Gaslamp/ Romance and once you start the first chapter, you're transported to a gothic mansion with mysterious brothers and dark secrets.
This is one of those books that is difficult to put down once you start reading it. Perhaps it's the gothic element or the mystery vibe, but something kept drawing me in. The Roan family has a lot of drama, and while Ruby wanted to visit the island to do research regarding women who went missing, she found something else—something much worse and a possible threat.
If you're a fan of"𝙒𝙝𝙤 𝙙𝙞𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪?", you will be kicking your feet in the air when reading this book. Noah takes this trope to the next level. The attraction between Noah and Ruby! I loved every moment. There isn't much to the setting, but the island and the mansion have this creepy energy, that feeling that something isn't right. And this is exactly what keeps you turning the pages: secret passages, full moon parties, and secrets exchanged between brothers. Hammish Roan is the creepiest; from the start, he gives predator vibes.
I would love to read more books by these authors. They captivated me with this book and the characters felt real. I listened to a gothic ambience music playlist while reading this book and it created the perfect setting. I almost felt like I was walking along Ruby in the halls of this mansion.
Add to your TBR if you like: - A gothic mansion - Steampunk aesthetic - Morally gray alpha MMC - Academic FMC - Complex family dynamics - Wounded characters - "Who did this to you?" - He unalives someone for her - Possessive and obsessed MMC - "Tell me to stop" - "Primal chase scene"
I definitely recommend reading this book!
Many thanks to R & R Booktours for having me on the tour and to the authors for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.
Tropes: 🖤 morally grey mmc ♥️ strangers to lovers 🖤 obsessive and possessive mmc ♥️ supernatural/pnr 🖤 gothic romance ♥️ touch her and 💀
Trying to save her academic appointment at Essik College, Professor Ruby Rose seeks out eclectic donor, Hammish Roan on his secluded item to try to get a grant to continue funding her work. Little does she know that the Roan's hold some sinister secrets close to the chest. When Hammish's eldest son, Noah, tries with no avail to get Ruby off the island before it's too late, the two clash. Secrets are revealed, horrors uncovered.
Wow wow wow wow, this book! I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into with this one, but I absolutely binged this book in a night. What an absolutely fantastic read. I loved how headstrong Ruby was as an FMC, especially as a woman in academia in male-dominated part of my field. She definitely took no crap from Noah or any of the other Roan's and really held her own...well... except when she was drugged lol. And my bb Noah, omg what a guy. Loyal and protective to a fault. I loved seeing his character development and arc throughout the book, especially as his and Ruby's relationship continued to grow more intimate.
I don't want to give away too many spoilers, especially with the partially vague blurb, but the concept and overall plot of this book was so interesting and unique and unlike anything I've read recently. I really liked how everything was slowly uncovered and unraveled as the book went on, and the random twists and turns helped contribute to the overall gothic ambiance of the story.
ta'ari ♥️🖤
An absolutely great read from Maci and Thea, and perfect for fall/spooky season. Thanks so much to them for the eARC!
🖤 Gothic vibes, sharp teeth, and chemistry so electric it could light up a haunted mansion—this book has it all.
Professor Ruby Rose: brilliant, sassy, and not here for anyone’s nonsense. When she steps onto Roan Island, she’s got one goal: save her research.
Enter Noah Roan, broody, mysterious, and a walking “don’t trust me” sign. The twist? His family harbors secrets darker than the island’s shadowy corridors, and the Winter Solstice isn’t just a holiday—it’s a countdown.
✨Why you’ll be hooked: 🔥Ruby: A fierce academic heroine fighting for her career in a man’s world. Intelligent, brave, and never backing down, even when she’s out of her depth. 🔥Noah: Broody, possessive, and rocking some otherworldly traits (hint: not human 👀). He’s the definition of morally gray, with a protective streak that’ll make you melt. 🔥Vibes: Imagine Crimson Peak meets Beauty and the Beast, but make it gothic-romance-gone-dark. Candlelit halls, hidden doors, and secrets you’re dying to uncover.
Top moments: ❤️🔥The tension between Ruby and Noah? Delicious. Every glance, every argument, every moment of “tell me to stop”… perfection. ❤️🔥The primal chase scene. Don’t walk, RUN to this part of the book. ❤️🔥Noah’s obsessive devotion. When he envies the wind for touching her hair? Yeah, he’s that gone.
Downside? It’s over too soon. This world, these characters, the Roan brothers—I NEED MORE. The epilogue teases at least one more book, and I’m already dreaming about Jafeth’s story.
Final verdict: The Secrets of Roan Island isn’t just a book; it’s an experience. Dark, seductive, and utterly enthralling. If you love gothic romance with morally gray men and sharp-tongued heroines, this will own you. 🖤
Professor Ruby Rose is desperately trying to not lose her job. She accepts an invitation from a recluse philanthropist Hammish Roan in hopes of receiving a grant. Invited to stay until the Winter Solstice Ruby spends her time researching in the private library and waiting to meet with Mr. Roan. In his steed Hammish sends his oldest son, Noah, to keep Ruby company and to keep her from discovering their secrets. Noah is desperately trying to make Ruby leave before the Solstice, knowing the ravelry his maniacal father is planning. Ruby insists on staying, driving Noah mad with her stubbornness. As they clash, they also struggle to fight a growing attraction. But Hammish has his eyes on the professor and will do anything to protect the family secrets. Noah and Ruby have to be careful and may even need to work together to destroy Hammish before he strikes first.
I very much enjoyed the gothic vibes of this book. Add in monsters and romance and it was an enjoyable read for me. While I did find the instalust between the characters a bit off putting at first, as their relationship grew it was easy enough to get past. Ruby was amazing. Getting out of an abusive relationship and fighting for her professional reputation, she was so resilient and stubborn. Noah has the dark and mysterious vibes going for him but add on his smarts and loyalty made him a great match for Ruby. I am so curious about the powers that come to light at the end and hope to see them explored more in the next book. Cant wait to see Shemaiah’s story.
Rating 3.5 stars *I received a review copy from the author for my voluntary and honest review
This is the perfect rainy day book. It's dark, it's spooky, it's demented Mr Darcy.
Ruby is a professor desperately trying to get funding for her studies. After accepting an invitation to the Roan family estate. she hopes she will be able to convince the patriarch to fund her research into the disappearance of women. Noah tries his best to stay away from Ruby and to get her to leave, but his brothers think she may be the answer to how to stop their father.
This would've been 5 stars for me if there was more background information about the Mavarri and the magic system of the Gate House. It felt almost like an afterthought to make the book paranormal instead of it just being a creepy house with a creepy family. That being said, I loved Noah. I didn't know I wanted a vampiric Mr Darcy, but apparently I do because the yearning was *chef's kiss*. The hand flexes, the back of the hand brush, the tension was palpable and the emotional pacing was perfect.
The pacing of the plot got a little much for me right around 60% because it was like a race to finish the story before the pages ran out. I kept thinking there was no way everything could be wrapped up with only 100 pages left, and I was a little right. We got very little time to understand what happened with Zarah, no time at all to digest the assassination plot, and the whole mate thing was completely breezed over. I loved everything that happened and the plot absolutely needed those points, I just needed another 50 pages so that I could breathe between plot points.
What's better than a five star read to start the month?
Thank you to the authors Maci Aurora and Thea Masen for the ARC. I really enjoyed reading your book.
Ruby is an intelligent, brave and sassy FMC. She's a college professor who tries to fight for her place in a world domimatef by men. I love how she never loses her fire even if scared shitless.
She visits Roan Island in hopes to get a grant and help for her research to secure her job at the College. The Island belongs to Hammish Roan and his three sons.
The MMC Noah is a Vampire? Shape-Shifter? Alien? Well... He's definitely not Human. But I honestly don't care because he's HOT and has a tortured soul. He's very possesive, a little grumpy, broken and kinda cute.
They had quite the back and forth and both tried to fight the attraction towards each other but they stood no chance with such a strong chemistry.
"The wind lashes her skirts around her legs and tugs at her hair. I envy the wind's ability to undo her."
-You know he's got it bad when he starts getting jealous of the wind.-
The story gripped me from the start because of all the mystery and intrigue.
The epilogue gives me hope there'll be another book and I would love to hear the story of the other brothers! I have a feeling the funny and flirtatious Jafeth is the most broken one of them all. 🤭
The Secret of Roan Island was an incredible read! I loved the gothic, Victorian vibes, and the very angsty slow burn between Ruby and Noah.
Ruby was invited to the Roan estate under the pretense that Hammish Roan, patriarch of the Roan family, would discuss providing her with a grant to help with her research. With her every move under surveillance, and very little done to aid her research, Ruby realizes that the Roan men were trying to keep her from uncovering their secrets. Stuck in the middle of the complicated dynamic between Hammish and his sons, it became clear that she was here to serve one purpose, but the growing affection between her and Noah would complicate everything.
I loved Ruby and Noah, and all the push and pull between them. Ruby was a fierce woman with strong beliefs, and her falling for the morally gray monster was definitely not in her plans. Noah was a lost puppy, desperate to find a solution to their problem, so all the terrible things he'd done would not have been for nothing. He didn't expect the little professor to be so delectably tempting, but also maybe, the missing piece of the puzzle? It was a great story, and I hope this is not the last we're seeing of Roan Island because I need the brothers' stories 😁
Thank you to R&R Book Tours, Thea Masen, and Maci Aurora for the opportunity to read and review this book!
Thank you so much to the author. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The story follows Professor Ruby Rose, a woman fighting in a man’s world to be taken seriously and be the voice for other women, as she travels to the mysterious Roan Island. She meets the Roan family, Hammish and his 3 sons, but something isn’t quite right about them. Eyes too dark, teeth too sharp and skin too perfect. They’re predators but Ruby must decide if she wants to be caught as prey.
This felt very much like Crimson Peak spooky vibes and I ate it up!! I loved the gothic horror vibes; the house with its hidden doors and creepy portraits was the perfect setting. I saw some of the twists coming but others I couldn’t predict and was sat laying awake at night trying to work out what was going to happen next (and trying not to grab my kindle to read into the wee hours!)
I absolutely adored Noah and Ruby with my whole heart 🥹 Noah so traumatised and broken giving absolute “please fix me” vibes and Ruby taking none of any of their bullshit and calling them all out for how it is. I loved how strong she was even though she was kacking her pants and let’s be honest none of us could deny Noah either because he is delicious 😏 The epilogue has me salivating for the books on the other brothers and I just know Jafeth is going to be the filthiest and my favourite!!
Overall, this was absolutely perfect for Halloween and I loved every single spooky second of it! Rating: 👻👻👻👻.5
yall this ARC was not what I expected. I hardly ever go into a book knowing what it's about. I like the surprise of the plot and characters that most of the time you figure out a lot of information based on the blurb. Hence why i was shocked to find out this was not just a normal humanly visit to Roan Island and there's indeed two hearts beating in Noah's chest and two moons in the sky. yall know I love monster romance so I was ecstatic. And when noahs fangs came out to play it was even better🤭 Noah Roan is a grumpy, gorgeous, Mavaari who will stop at nothing to destroy his father. Ruby Rose is a professor who is hoping to receive a grant from said father to fund her research. Despite noahs best efforts he can't help but be in love with her and she can't help but be attracted to him. I mean can I blame her?🤭 i really loved this story and it's such an interesting plot concept i just have to admire it. And despite it being a slower burn the scenes we got good lordy😫 I was melting. The only thing I didn't like about this book was Noah's father (but we are supposed to) god he was just so horrible and it's a miracle they survived that long dealing with him. Speaking of them-ahem noahs brothers(and sister)🤭- ouu yall I cannot wait for their books. it's gonna be so good.
Professor Ruby: armed with a PhD, a sharp tongue, and a suitcase full of ambition. Enter Noah Roan: broody, dangerous, and 100% the type your mom would warn you about (if she knew about his… other side). Mix in a cursed island, a family of secrets, and gothic vibes so rich you’ll think you’re living in a haunted Victorian mansion. Yep, I’m hooked.
This book is like Crimson Peak met Beauty and the Beast at a dark, candlelit cocktail party. Think forbidden glances, sharp teeth, and tension so thick it could cut steel. Ruby’s sass and brains make her a total icon, while Noah is brooding perfection. Together? A match made in gothic romance heaven (or hell, depending on your vibe 🖤).
Highlights? The spooky, seductive setting made me feel like I needed to light a candelabra just to read. The Roan family lore? Deliciously dark. The romance? Let’s just say, I’ll never look at moonlit gardens the same way again. 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Downside? I wasn’t ready to leave the island! Seriously, why was this not a trilogy? I need more Roan brothers STAT.
Final verdict: The Secrets of Roan Island will sink its teeth into you (literally, in some cases). It’s mysterious, sexy, and delightfully unhinged in the best way. Don’t walk—RUN to grab this book. 📚🖤 #GothicRomanceGoals
"The wind lashes her skirts around her legs and tugs at her hair. I envy the wind's ability to undo her." ............................ This story is a mesmerizing mix of paranormal, gothic, and regency romance that had me hooked! It takes the classic house-party forced proximity trope and twists it into something dark and thrilling—think shadowy stares and sharp teeth instead of stolen glances and ballroom dances.
Professor Ruby is a standout heroine: fiercely intelligent, confident, and willing to do whatever it takes to uncover the truth for womankind. Noah is the ultimate dark and mysterious predator—devious, dangerous, and utterly captivating. Their connection is electric, full of tension and intrigue.
The Roan family story is fascinating, with rich details that make the gothic world feel alive. This seductive, atmospheric tale is perfect for fans of paranormal and gothic romance! Perfect for a spooky read!
A gothic mansion Steampunk aesthetic Morally gray alpha MMC Academic FMC Complex family dynamics Wounded characters "Who did this to you?" He unalives someone for her Possessive and obsessed MMC "Tell me to stop" Primal chase scene "Mine"
This book is FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC! I loved absolutely everything. Gothic PNR is not my thing, but maybe now it could be? I only read this book because I've read a few of Thea Masen's books and loved them. The Secrets of Roan Island is most definitely in my TOP 5 of 2024.
What can I possibly say about Ruby and Noah? Two researchers meeting with a life or death deadline, only Ruby doesn't know the full story. The tension between these two was perfect. I would say this was a slow burn, but it wasn't really. The smoldering up to the flash was just that intense at times. When Ruby finally realizes the first part of the family secret, she just doubles down and chases Noah even harder.
Ruby is the best kind of FMC. She is tough, smart, and capable without being annoying or nasty. We want her to be successful, yes in love, but also as she searches for secrets. Noah is the tough, "You're Mine" guy who is a bit of a cinnamon roll for his woman.
We also meet Shemaiah and Jefeth, Noah's brothers, who are integral to the story and deserve their own HEAs. I also want to know more about their mysterious sister, Zarah. Without giving anything away, I will just say that I'm ready for the epilogue to play out asap.
Side note to the authors: I see what you did with those names.
I absolutely HATE to be the first one to give this 1 (and a half) star... It's probably more me, personally, than the book. We simply didn't click.
- I never connected with the characters.
- The characters personalities and emotions were, for me, all over the place. Not in a conflicting way, but a way that made their characters unbelievable and unfinished (Like Going from a forever unafraid characteristic to sudden fear, and morally grey to sobbing).
- I am not a fan of insta-lust. I don't mind spice, but I prefer some kind of romance before lust (or at least at the same time) and most of all - I prefer the building between characters and their relationship, the development, and then the fire.
- It was full of ALL the tropes. And while I have absolutely nothing against tropes, because I felt very little for the story, they just didn't work in the favour of the book, for me.
- It had nothing original. And nothing surprised me.
- I really liked the idea, but I just simply never felt it, once I was reading. Even got a bit annoyed from time to time.
All in all I see what appeals to people, what this books tried to be - it just didn't work for me.
The Secrets of Roan Island is a mysterious and gothic paranormal romance. Professor Rose needs grant funding to keep her position at her university. She receives an invitation to stay in the eerie manor at Roan Island and intends to convince the Roans to fund her research--but she's met with the grumpy and broody Noah Roan, who is determined to get her to leave before she uncovers secrets she won't be allowed to keep 😈
The gothic vibes were perfect! Very Crimson Peak. There was lots of descriptive language that made me feel like I was right there alongside Ruby 🖤 the push and pull between Ruby and Noah was *chef's kiss* 💋 The dual POV was the perfect choice. I did feel like things progressed really quickly in the second half; I would have loved to have seen more of the depravity of the highly anticipated party and more interaction with the other Roan brothers. Overall I enjoyed it, and I would definitely read more in this series if it's continued!!
Thanks so much to the authors and RR Book Tours for my copy 🖤
Check this one out if you like 🖤 Mysterious, gothic vibes 💋 Possessive MMCs 🖤 "Who did this to you?" 💋 Morally grey men
Oh my goodness y'all!! I did not know what I'd be getting into when I started this book but I was hooked from the start. I finished this book in one sitting. It was different from any book I've read recently which is always nice & felt like a breath of fresh air.
We have an eerie and mysterious island with a gothic mansion, morally grey MMC who is possessive as well as obsessive, a determined Professor FMC who will stop at nothing to get the answers she needs, trauma & healing, TENSION, and mystery. Due to some of the darker themes and misogynistic remarks (so read the trigger warnings if you need to) this book made me go through all the emotions, which to me, is what I love about reading. The art of invoking strong emotions from a reader is a talent and Thea Masen & Maci Aurora aced it!
I feel like this book will be perfect for dark romance readers as well as gothic romance & paranormal romance lovers!
Thank you so so so much Thea Masen & Maci Aurora for the e-arc. I loved diving into this world and can't wait to see what happens next!!
LOVE LOVE LOVED ROAN ISLAND! Dark, mythical/fantasy romance.
I totally raw dogged this book. I had no idea what I was in for, only that Thea Masen is one of the authors (which is all I need to know to start a book if I'm being honest).
We follow Ruby as she looks to source knowledge and funding for her research. An invite to Roan Island is her lucky break from the wealthy Hammish Roan. Everything about the island and the family is shrouded in mystery, the darkness of which continues to spread the deeper she dives.
Her connection to Noah, the eldest Roan brother, grows stronger as her time on Roan Island drags on leading to seriously sinister revelations along with mouthwatering steam scenes.
Ruby is a strong willed, intelligent FMC with an endearing moral compass always pointing north. Noah is honest. He is possessive and thoughtful. You can expect "who did this to you" and "mine" and "fuck it" from this deliciously dark MMC.
5 stars, wish I could read again for the first time.
