The nation’s favourite blended beastly family is BACK for the fifth and FINAL book of the series from multiple award-winning author Jack Meggitt-Phillips
'Reads like a modern classic. Sharp, funny, original – I thought this was brilliant', Sam Copeland, bestselling author of Charlie Changes into a Chicken on The Beast and The Bethany
Ebenezer Tweezer has spent the best part of 512 years doing whatever he wanted, but that all changed when he met Bethany – a rude, snotty-nosed prankster. Ebenezer has come to care for this strange, slightly smelly little scowler more than he has cared about anyone or anything before.
It’s just as well, because when this story begins, Bethany needs a friend. She has just discovered that her parents Augustus and Gemima were dreadful criminals before they died in an only slightly more dreadful fire.
Except – it seems her father did NOT die at all. Augustus returns to Bethany’s life, begging for Bethany’s help to clear his name and show him how to live a life that is free from crime.
As the action barrels towards celebrations for Ebenezer’s 513th birthday, Ebenezer, Miss Muddle and Geoffrey have to figure out Augustus’ true motives for coming back into Bethany’s life. Can they show Bethany the true meaning of family, before it’s too late?
THE FINAL FEAST is a rousing, dastardly funny send off to this series.
This is such a heart-warming tale of family as Bethany is confronted with her father and re-examines her life with Ebenezer and even the beast! It was so nice to see them all come together, these three people who started the series as enemies but over five books coming to cherish each other so much. (The Ebenezer speeches at the party really showed how much they'd come to mean to each other!)
At the same time, it had all the quirky verve of the previous books, all the over the top caricatures of characters and situations that just works well together. Geoffrey's disastrous attempts at magic tricks, Miss Muddle's astounding sweets, Cressida's tap dancing, and more. It's such a bizarre collection of things that it's impossible not to laugh along at a series that both takes itself seriously and constantly pokes fun at itself.
The epilogue is very sweet, giving you an idea of the sorts of adventures the gang gets up to once the book closes. There are just enough hints that you can make up your own tales though this one has ended - it could be a great way to get children telling tales of their own!
3.75 stars. Entertaining and fun. Enjoyed all five books. First one definitely the best. Got a little repetitive after a while. A beast with a mean streak with the ability to vomit whatever you wish for is a fantastic idea, so much potential, I wish I could see more of it.
I am so sad this series is over! Some of the best children's books I've read in years. Wrapped up nicely with truly sweet ending, and laughs all the way through!
I’m really disappointed with how this series ended. Most of it was really predictable. I just felt there wasn’t as much thought in this one as others. Such a shame as I have loved the rest of the series!
