An English historian, commentator and broadcaster and author of two highly acclaimed books on modern Britain: Never Had It So Good and White Heat. Their follow-up is State of Emergency.
A maritime thriller, set against a cold war backdrop of espionage and political intrigue. And a plot that's not completely without parallels in today's political climate. Feels like I should have enjoyed this one a lot more than I did.
There's definitely an enjoyable thriller in there, but to me it was hidden underneath a mountain of technical detail, most of which went over my head. And that's a shame, as there are a lot of elements in this book that normally have me hooked, especially the political wheeling and dealing and the interactions between the Russian and American sailors.
Given the other reviews, I'm probably in the minority, but I think this book would suit someone who is equally interested in mechanics and politics.
I found the story very interesting, and was also impressed with Tom Clancy’s research. Though I had difficulty following the story some times, I enjoyed this book.
