The truth can be a bitter pill . . .

Michelle can’t believe this is her life. That she’s escaped her dreary 9-to-5 in London and landed a PR job here. In the towering headquarters of Kimia Pharmaceuticals in Reykjavik, Iceland.

It’s too bad her coworkers don’t want to be friends. They’re all young, beautiful — and determined to freeze Michelle out of their whispered conversations.

But researcher Lars isn’t like the others . . .

Michelle steps into the elevator with him and is struck by the hunted look on his face. The doors close — and seconds later, they judder to a sickening halt.

That’s when it happens. Lars locks eyes with Michelle. Thrusts a folder into her hands.

This is evidence. Hide it . . . I discovered something and I’ll be silenced because of it.

Michelle’s already run from her past. This time, she’ll be running for her life . . .

I read a medical research thriller after long. This is a fast-paced story. The premise is good, though lot of the characterization and action is predictable & simplistic.

Michelle is 45, divorced after her husband had an affair with a younger woman and left her. Her son Toby is in college. Michelle initially struggled to come to terms with her situation and harboured a lot of self-doubt. She decides to move along and takes up a job in Iceland. She joins Kimia, a research lab in Reykjavik in Corporate Relations/PR. This is a 6-month position to start with. Her boss is Ashley, an American and she shares accommodation with Helga, a senior manager. The apartment sharing practice is encouraged for assimilation & learning. She finds areas which are a no-go in the building for confidentiality reasons. After all, Kimia is working on potentially path-breaking new drugs, and it is a very competitive industry.

She gets to appreciate the city – its sights, places and culture. It initially felt strange that in winter the city is up before dawn with darkness creeping in by afternoon. There is a period of strange still twilight, like a daily eclipse. One day in the elevator a man – Lars Andersson, who she has not met before, in panic hands her a file and sample. He tells her there are some things wrong and she should go to the police or media. He meets her the next day in the bus and provides more details, divulging that he must leave the country the same night. He suggests she speak to Richard Bamford, a journalist in London. She does that and he promptly offers to help – deciding that it is best he fly into Iceland.

The story is very well fast paced. The idea of a blockbuster drug and sinister characters provides a good story premise. There are very good descriptions of Iceland, especially how it feels in the winter. There are aspects of the plot which feel far-fetched especially since the motives are poorly explained.

My rating: 3.5 / 5.

Michelle takes on maternity cover at a scientific lab in Iceland. It's a lovely place, but everyone looks so young. It's quite strange.

Michelle is in one of the lifts and a scientist hands her a package and tells her something is wrong with the product.

Thus starts a cat and mouse chase as Michelle tries to get away from the company, but they want her stopped from leaking anything. This was a fast paced thriller that gets your heart going in places. I honestly thought she was done for quite a few times

This story gets you thinking on what happens in these research labs and how do we know the medicines we take are ok. But, hey, let's not go down that rabbit hole.

The characters were easy to attach to in this and there were a few surprises along the way with some of them that I didn't see coming.

That ending though......is there going to be another?

Michelle is itching for a change. She’s feeling her age and needing to break out from the future she sees for herself so when a chance short-term opportunity comes up to cover maternity leave for her skill set based in Reykjavik, she decides it must be fate. What it leads to is a fast-paced medical science conspiracy and cover-up that has her running for her life.

The descriptions of every step from the dullness of her current life, to Michelle’s first day in the facility that’s to be her new employer are rich. You can feel the sting of the cold, and the coldness of the clinical environment as well as the warmth imbued in the local coffee shops. By the time you’re halfway through, you’re willing her onwards and you will keep turning pages to discover what will happen next.

In this day and age where we see headlines all the time about tech billionaires investing in various things whether it’s Elon Musk and Space X or Larry Ellison and his medical research foundation and even Bryan Johnson and his personal medical team and insights, it makes this book all the more unnerving about how much it could actually be closing on reality.

You don’t need to suspend disbelief for this. Read it and potentially see what the future may hold for us…

Michelle 45 divorced son in college leaves London for Iceland to take a temporary position at Kimia. a company that is doing research that is ‘speculative’ and ‘pushing the limits of science’. After being with them a month she is starting to realize that highly confidential, highly sensitive and classified along with leading entrepreneurs and limitless secrets are just the tip of the iceberg.

Can Michelle curb her curiosity or will her questions bring trouble ? The pharma industry is ruthless. Outsiders are not welcome. The quest for eternal youth is priceless. Without giving spoilers this is a relentless and desperate quest to get the truth out and stay alive. Descriptive and fast paced you will not want to put this down. Don’t even try to tell yourself one more chapter - just keep reading

The Wonder Drug follows single mother Michelle who is beyond excited to receive a new job in the Icelandic capital Reyjavik but upon arrival learns quickly that something isn't quite right with her suspicions and questions growing by the second. Her new place of work holds a ground-breaking new drug promising drastic change and exciting new things for the world but there may just be sinister findings behind this new wonder drug. When Michelle is given information by an employee that could put her life in danger readers are taken on a thrilling journey that leaves you hooked and on edge!

This is a fast paced thriller read that doesn't keep readers waiting. We are quickly thrown into the action which is something I truly loved about this book. Susanna Beard presented her readers with a relatable character who takes the position of a simple, normal every day woman and mother who experiences her own insecurities and feelings of emptiness. We learn enough about Michelle early on to feel connected to her from her story of being a single mother, divorced and having a child who has flown the nest. It instantly starts the conversation around what the next chapter looks like in life when our children have gone on to live their own lives and what is next for the parent. Is Michelle more vulnerable because of these things? or is she the perfect woman to take on a world full of secrets and danger? The action in this book was never ending with each character having their important role and every page highlighting the intensity and drama. Themes and discussions around medical ethics, relationships, self image, life after divorce and life as a parent to an adult child are raised throughout this book providing an intellectual read that stimulates the brain and caters to fans of psychological thriller. We must also mention how well Beard does at creating the image of the amazing surrounding her characters visit and find themselves in with clear and detailed descriptions. It truly feels as though you are right there with the characters you're reading about.
This book was an easy read, enjoyable and kept me hooked. The short chapters are something I favour and allowed me to dive into the story and get through it very quickly! Despite the chapters being short we still were given a gripping story that left you wanting more after each ending chapter. The action was fast paced and made this an excellent read for long time thriller fans and a brilliant introduction to the genre for new readers.

Susanna Beard weaves a great tale!

Her description of Winter in Reykjavik made me shiver and reach for a fleece, and I was reading it in the South of France!
Michelle is newly divorced from her cheating husband and is depressed and discontented with her lot. She's hates her ageing looks and spends a fortune on beauty products in an attempt at turning back the clock. When her son leaves home for university, she decides it's now or never for an adventure. She applies for a temporary job at a major pharmaceutical company in Iceland, and to her surprise and that of her closest friend, she lands the job. The adventure begins in freezing Reykjavik. Her fixation on eternal youth becomes ironic as the story unfolds.
Lars, a scientist at the pharma, discovers a terrible secret. In desperation, he entrusts it to Michelle. The story evolves into a John Buchan style escape and run with twists and thrills right until the end.
Brilliantly descriptive writing and a fine tale. I'm sure there will be a part two to this book, which I eagerly await.

This was a good, intense and interesting read. This delves into the pharmaceutical world and the wonder drug that can extend life but all is not as it seems.
When I was reading it I kept thinking I could imagine this as a TV series. Having visited Iceland I enjoyed the descriptions of the country and would've liked them to stay there a bit longer but it's not possible with the story.
I'll definitely be looking into this author more, I enjoyed her style of writing and found it easy to read and I got into the book very fast.

This has been on my Kindle for quite some time, I'm so glad I finally got around to reading it. It wasn't quite what I thought it was going to be. I thought it would be more along the lines of 'Limitless', however I still really enjoyed it and found myself reading just one or five more (short) chapters. A really good, exciting read.

Michelle is excited about her new job, mostly because it’s based in Reyjavik. Stuck in a rut, she is keen for a change of scene and where better than the stunning Icelandic capital?

Very quickly, Michelle starts to wonder what goes on on the upper floors of her Pharmaceutical employers office building. Everyone she asks about her shuts her down very quickly, which only increases her curiosity. And then a scientist hands her a file which explains everything, leaving Michelle’s life in danger, because when the company discover she knows their secret, they won’t hesitate to end her life.

This was great read, fast paced and with loads of action as Michelle fights to reveal the truth and stay alive, while wondering how someone as normal as her has ended up a fugitive!

4.5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Susanna Beard and Joffe for an ARC in return for an honest review.

Imagine this happening to you. There you are, minding your own business, when someone thrusts a folder into your hands and tells you to hide it. Or give it to someone in the media. He gives you their card. Sorry it has to be you, he says. It will probably change your life forever, may even get you killed, but hey ho, I had no choice. Then he disappears. His name was Lars, that’s all you know.

It’s not a prank. It’s for real. What do you do? You’re just an ordinary middle aged woman with no experience of industrial espionage or secrets or whatever this is. At this point I may have given it to someone else and said ‘you deal with it. I’ve only been here five minutes and I’m just covering maternity leave.’

But you don’t, because you know that what he just told you could endanger the lives of thousands of people – maybe millions. And you have to weigh that up against your own safety.

Michelle doesn’t know what to do. She only tells one person. They are horrified. They tell her to hand it in to the company. We could both be at risk for even discussing it, lose our jobs, be arrested. Explain what happened. But her conscience won’t allow it.

So she calls the name on the card and asks his advice. And the game is on, except it’s not a game. The book then becomes a race against time. It’s just the two of them initially, then someone else joins them. But what about Lars? Can they keep him safe?

I’m exhausted just thinking about it. Poor Michelle. If only she’d known she probably would have stayed at home, trying to get over her failed marriage, her loneliness and her attempts to look younger (her ex went off with a woman half his age. Of course he did).

This was so fast paced and exciting that I read it in one day – I’m lucky enough to have been on holiday at the time.

Many thanks to @ZooloosBT for inviting me to be part of this blog tour.

I love a good psychological thriller that has me hooked from the start and racing towards the end to find out all the answers - and this book by a new author to me, did just that.

I loved the premise of this one - Michelle takes a new job based in Iceland and on top of trying hard to fit in, she pulled into drama by another colleague.

This was an exciting read which had me guessing the whole way though. Packed with twists, which I love, and with a tension that builds as the story unfolds.

I loved the settings which added to the tense feeling. Being somewhere new (especially when your colleagues aren't so friendly) is always tough, but Iceland also feels quite isolated and wild too.

I found this quite disturbing in places as we see just how easy it can be to be dragged into something like this so easily.
One day going about your everyday life and the next running for your life as a fugitive.
There's so much technology around now (and more being developed every day) which makes it so easy to manipulate and find people and information.
This felt believable even with all the action and adventure.

A great first read for me and definitely an author I'd read again!

Wow, this is a incredible book, from the first page to the last. The descriptions of the freezing conditions are on point, many times I was getting chills. I really love the snowy, small, icy towns in these Scandinavian countries. The authors descriptions are so striking creating such picturesque images. But they were not too much, I definitely got the dark, claustrophobic vibes from it.
What also makes the story more compelling is the fact that the whole scenario is very dodgy, and quite scary.
Everything about this book is absolutely amazing, I was definitely routing for Michelle, Richard & Lars. My gosh, they really are a great trio.

The Wonder Drug by Susannah Beard is about fourty-something Michelle starting a temporary job in Reykjavic, Iceland to escape a dreary life in London and a cheating ex. The company is Kimia Pharmaceuticals, and from day one their restrictive security regulations pique Michelle’s curiosity.
On arriving in Iceland, it is October in the far Northern latitudes, and the reader is treated to some captivating pen pictures of Michelle enjoying her first experience of the days getting darker, the first snowfall approaching, the awesome scenery from her office window, and a people and culture completely different from anything Michelle or this reader have previously been exposed to.
However, Michelle wanted some excitement in her life, which is thrust upon her when Lars, a researcher at Kimia, squeezes into her elevator while being chased by company Security and forces a file into her hands urging her to hide it. The next morning on the way in to work Lars in disguise sits next to her on the bus, asks her to contact an investigative journalist, Richard, and begs her to deliver the file so a deadly side effect of a medication he is working on can be made public.
Thus the fun begins and Richard takes Michelle on a race away from Kimia Security across the wintery seas and diverse countries of Northern Europe in a flight for their lives and to publish their findings before the deadly medication is released on the World.
In the first 80% of the book the explanations for developing actions are crisp with thoughtful detail. Towards the final chapters I was somewhat disappointed by fuzzy explanations for actions and a confusing timeline anomaly. I enjoyed the plot for this story which is cohesive, based on some excellent research into the topic and the various countries visited, and fast paced. The book is well written to keep the reader involved with the action and compelled to find out what will happen next, and the characters are nicely defined and relatable.

4⭐️. The wonder drug by @susannabeard25

Thriller writer Susanna is fascinated by human relationships. She can be found people-watching wherever she goes, finding material for her writing. Despite the writer’s life, she has an adventurous streak and has swum with whale sharks in Australia, fallen down a crevasse in the French Alps and walked through the sewers of Brighton - not in that order. Her passions include animals — particularly her dogs — wildlife and tennis, which clears her brain of pretty much everything.

This is a great book for drilling fear into you as you read it. Is Michelle's life now in danger? Read the book to find out, it’s a terrific plot and so well written, it so drags you in, you will find it so difficult to put the book down. Michelle is a great character who shows her true worth and the dread that she had shown Helga the stuff that had been given to her.

OMG what a book. This book from the first page hits the road running. I knew it would be exciting and threatening but it really does keep the pages turning.

Poor Michelle, all she wanted was a new life, doing something different in a new country and a bit of excitement thrown in. Well, she certainly achieved that.

Nothing Big Pharma does surprises me. I’m not a fan and they’ll do anything for money and profit. You’ve only got to look over the past few years to see what they are capable of.

This new drug that they are developing is to all intents and purposes brilliant on the outside, designed to reverse aging and give people longevity. However, as with all big Pharma there are side effects, and all is not as it seems. This is worth billions for Kimia and they’ll do absolutely anything to protect it.

A chance meeting with Lars in a lift leaves Michelle in danger. He gives her information and some pills which proves the data is dodgy. She has to stop the launch before it is produced and millions die.

Now she must literally run for her life as Big Pharma’s tentacles reach worldwide.

The twist at the end is very subtle and I absolutely loved this book. I read it in a day. It was different, not your normal run of the mill crime, but corporate crime, and I for one, don’t doubt it happens more than we’ll ever know.

My thanks to the author and Joffe Publishers for the ARC.

This is a fun ride on the edge of your seat read from beginning to end. The author graciously immerses the reader in the narrative, providing only enough description of the setting (Reykjavik, Iceland, mostly the coast and the many live cams that dot it) to whet your appetite. Michelle is relatable on her first day at Kimia Pharmaceuticals, whose first day there quickly escalates into an unfortunate web of danger.

Beard is able to construct a feeling of looming threat and as Michelle starts to discover the bleak secrets her co workers are concealing, the anxiety becomes expertly demonstrated, while Michelle is pulled further into a lethal conspiracy. Lars’ unexpected character makes it a little more exciting, especially in the heart pounding elevator scene. The story is intricately plotted and dangles you into the dark dark dark underbelly of the pharmaceutical company.

If you’re a fan of suspenseful gripping story telling then The Wonder Drug is a book you should read. Reykjavik’s snowy streets and rugged mountains create some mad visuals; you can feel the urgency. This book contains an intricately layered plot and characters that keep you reading until the last page. I highly recommend it!

Beautiful people and dark secrets, what’s not to entice me?
When Michelle decides she’s had enough of life in the UK, she takes a chance on a new job in Reykjavik, working for Kimia Pharmaceuticals. But it’s not long before she realises that the company she works for has secrets to hide and when she has a chance encounter with Lars, and he thrusts a package in her hands, she quickly finds out that exactly how dangerous a situation she’s been put into. At first I found the book to be a slow burner as the scene is set, but when Michelle discovers the scale of things and enlists Richard, an investigative reporter, the action begins to ramp up and from then on doesn’t stop. I applauded her bravery in taking on a new job in a different country in the first place, and kept cheering her on when she didn’t know who she could trust but knew she had to do what was right, regardless of what might happen. I also loved her devotion to her son and the way she wants to protect him. Having said that though, Toby, her son, is a brilliant character and I would love to see how he progresses as he gets older. There was plenty of action throughout and a couple of moments where I actually clamped my hand over my mouth.
The Wonder Drug is a great, compulsive read by Susanna and I can’t wait to read more by her.

The Wonder Drug has a great premise and setting — a mysterious 'wonder drug' soon to be released from a secretive pharmaceutical lab based in Iceland. When Michelle gets the offer of a PR job at the lab, she jumps at the chance. At 45, divorced, her son Toby now in university, this is her opportunity for an exciting change. Soon after she begins work, however, her life is kicked into high-octane action when a scientist working on the drug confides in her that it is extremely dangerous and she must warn the world before it's released. So begins Michelle's race against time, with help from an investigative journalist, to find enough evidence to denounce Kimia Pharmaceuticals and protect the world from the wonder drug, while pursued across Europe by hired killers.

The Wonder Drug is an absolute page turner. I started and finished it in less than 12 hours, finally closing it at 4 a.m.... Is it perfect? No. Are there plot holes and clichés? Yes. Do they matter? Not in the least: my suspension of disbelief was total while I was engrossed in this story.

Michelle gets to escape from a divorce and empty house to go to the wonderful country of Iceland and has a plum job that she is perfect for. What could go wrong? As this is a thriller, of course there is going to be something rotten waiting for her to uncover and it won't take too long. Alternating between her view point and Lars (the scientist trying to blow the whistle on a drug that could kill millions if released), plus little sections of the assassin's point of view to amp up the tenseness Michelle ends up with the sample and goes on the run, trying to stay alive long enough to get the story out (Lars too). It definitely is a fast read, and hard to put down. I don't think I even noticed chapters, I was very deep in and could picture the icy storm of a world that Michelle was in as she tried to figure out her next steps, staying ahead of Kimia. Thank goodness for Richard!

So, a fun and thrilling and pretty quick read about an ordinary woman making the right choice over a corporation looking to make big bucks at the cost of millions of lives, friends and allies she makes on the way. Amazing what you can end up doing when looking for an adventure after a miserable divorce!

Wellllll, this most definitely was something – something unlike most books I have read lately! And I’m saying that as a good thing. Or more like an awesome thing.
It really made me think of what is real and what isn’t – and not just in general, but when it comes to medical research, pharmaceuticals, and all those things we usually have no choice but to blindly trust that the research put into those has been a thorough one and the data are reliable and true.
It made me so uncomfortable just thinking about all the billions and billionaires out there investing their fortunes into all the research, all the tech, everything. Urgh. If you are ready to face your inner discomfort regarding a very possible reality you have never thought about before – dive in. Dive in blind. Just be warned, it will make you think in a way that is going to make you feel uncomfortable. If you are anything like me, you are going to enjoy it. Throw in some cat-and-mouse games, all happening while you are enjoying the comforts and safety of your own home and enjoy the wild ride of this book.

Susanna Beard is one of those writers who is often underestimated. I loved her book The Perfect Neighbour and she has delivered another cracker with this one!

Creepy and atmospheric, this is the story of how Michelle moves from the UK to a new job in Iceland in order to put her past well and truly behind her, only to encounter a most unexpected situation in Reykjavik.

Working for a pharmaceuticals company, she suddenly find herself in possession of confidential information that she has no desire to engage with. But it's likely that Michelle will have no choice. Because Lars, who gives her the unwanted files, does so at great personal risk.

And now, whether she wants to be involved or not, Michelle has to make some decisions fast...

A fast-paced and engaging read, this one gets 3. 5 stars.

So much for wanting to go to Iceland! This book totally had me feeling the mountains of snow, the cold weather, and the dark days.

Michelle is a divorced woman of a certain age, obsessed with wanting to look younger, and looking for something exciting. So she takes over for a maternity leave at a pharma company in Iceland. Her job is PR and as such she's on a "need-to-know" basis with what goes on at the top floors of the company, where scientists are working on a top-secret, ground-breaking drug. That is until she is thrust into the role of whistle-blower by a chance encounter. What follows is a story worthy of any episode of Mission Impossible. Michelle is on the run, but not without help. I swear I winced and ducked every time Michelle did!

This story launches straight into the action, immersing readers in a fast-paced narrative that never lets up. The dynamic between Michelle and Richard is both compelling and complex as they navigate a web of deceit while striving to publish their story. The tension builds with every twist, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.

The plot is tightly woven, featuring sharp dialogue and well-drawn characters that add depth to the unfolding drama. The stakes are high, and the relentless pace ensures that there's never a dull moment. This book has all the ingredients for a thrilling series, with enough intrigue to captivate fans of suspenseful fiction.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this story and can easily envision it evolving into a twisted and engaging series. It’s a must-read for anyone who loves a blend of action and psychological tension. Highly recommended!

Michelle is having a kind of midlife crisis, she craves excitement, her son is at university she has no ties so takes a job with Kimia, a pharmaceutical company in Iceland.
Things are going well although still a bit of an outsider.
One day Lars, a scientists corners her in a lift, he is terrified and shoves a folder at her telling her to hide it as it's going to be important evidence.
So starts Michelle's life on the run as she tries to navigate a new world along with the help of an investigative journalist called Richard.
Can all the players in this game survive and blow this medical conspiracy wide open to the world?
Wow this grabbed me from the first page and I was totally hooked.
Really liked and cared about the characters.
Never read this author before but she is fantastic and would definitely read more of her work.

Michelle is divorced, and her son has left for university. She accepts a position in Iceland, at Kimia Pharmaceurticals. There is a lot of secrecy in the work.
Lars is a scientist who finds that one of the newest Wonder drugs has a flaw. He reports it, and is fired. He hands Michelle a file in the elevator and goes into hiding.
Michelle contacts an investigative journalist, and they go on the run, Kimia is after her.

This is a very suspenseful, fast paced novel that kept me gripped from the beginning to the end.
Loved the intrigue, and some of the scenes made my heart pound from the stress! Kimia is determined to get their age reducing Wonder drug out at all costs.

I recommend. 4/5 stars

DNF 30% i'm not a fan of books with incredibly stupid main characters to the point it doesn't even make sense. she's super curious about the company, but when she's handed top secret documents/materials and told not to show to anyone in the company, instead of snooping and reading it first, or on her own, she shows it to a colleague instead. wtf. why? because she's afraid of getting fired? if she was that afraid then she should have immediately handed everything over to her colleague when she told her she shouldn't be in possession of any of it because she doesn't have the clearance.

i think the only kind of people who would rate this 5 stars and read this kind of nonsense are people like the main character.

WOW! I LOVED this book! Michelle, in a rut, feeling middle aged and unloved, decides to take a six month position in a pharmaceutical company in Iceland.

She senses more going on in the company than people know and is proven right one day during a chance encounter in a lift which catapults her into danger she could never imagine.

This story is relentless. The pace just doesn't let up and we are praying for a safe and successful resolution for Michelle with help from investigative journalist Richard.

I won't spoil it but if you read this book you won't be disappointed.

Huge thanks to Joffe Books for the ARC.
