Breaking the Rules #2

Flirting With Fate

Rule #1: Always wear a condom.
Rule #2: Always leave them wanting more.
Rule #3: Always man up.

Erica Roberts was the maid of honor in my brother’s wedding and my next conquest. She was tone, tan, and sweet as pie. I should’ve known I’d end up breaking her heart.

Still, against my better judgement I took her giving us both the best night of our lives. When I woke up the next morning she was gone, not a trace of what had happened between us, and I realized then I broke my number one rule: Always use a condom.

Two months later I get a text telling me I’m going to be a father. I feel a number of emotions, elation, fear, excitement, anger, but then she drops the biggest bomb on me. She says she doesn’t need me or want me. Now I’ve got to do whatever I can to keep us from falling apart. She doesn’t think I want the baby or can be a good father, while she’s about to find out just the kind of man I am.

SPOILERS!

I would really like to know what is so attractive about a Manho slutty Hero that attracts readers? Who the hell in real life wants someone who is a walking STD? Do women no longer have pride or self esteem?

I know this is a fictional read BUT this zero is so disgusting that I had a hard time seeing what the hell is the attraction with this trope! Story starts with the zero thinking he is God's gift to women. He is so proud that he has a "player" reputation and one that he "works hard" on.

We get lovely thoughts from him through the 4-5 chapters that I could just about stand to read before DNF'g of how he picks up women weekly & brings them home to f**k and how he likes to "satisfy" them.

Then we have the stupid female mc who knows his reputation but has to of course f**k him because she is 23 and wants to know if the rumor is true about how great he is. 🤧

So they do the deed & they forget the condom and she walks away (all while secretly waiting for him to call.). So does the zero call her? Nope. He thinks about calling her for a nanosecond but of course he then gets detracted with two OW in a bar - one which reminds him of the zeroine and we get a lovely scene in which he is flirting with this OW and feeling each other up. He is so "hard" for this OW that we get his lovely thoughts about him taking her to his place and seeing if she compares to the sex he had with zeroine.

Grinning, I grabbed an empty chair from a nearby table and swung it around. I slid onto it and made sure I was close enough that our thighs were touching. Natalie didn’t shy away. Within two minutes of chatting, her hand was resting on my thigh. Every few minutes, it rose higher up my leg. My response was obvious, and I didn’t try to hide it. Every time she glanced down at my growing cock, her thoughts seemed to falter.

The longer we talked, the more she kept shifting, her desire making her eager to get out of here. I preferred the long game. Well, as long as a one-night stand could be. Rather than whisking her back to my place at the first hint of willingness, I followed her lead and slid my hand onto her thigh. A tiny gasp escaped her lips, and I glanced up to make sure she wasn’t going to object. The sheen of lust in her eyes begged me to continue. I was happy to comply.

I had no idea what we were talking about, and didn’t care. My focus was on sliding my fingers up her thigh as far as I dared in public. She responded by moving her hand to cover my cock. I flinched at her touch, and she started to pull back. I stopped her with my free hand and pressed her hand back against me. She moaned softly and leaned in closer.

“I’m not sure how much longer I can last,” she whispered. “Do you live nearby?”

“Fairly close,” I said.

Her hand pressed a little harder. “I’m an hour away.”

“My place then?” I asked as my fingertips brushed against her wet panties.

As eager as she was, she slid from the chair slowly, keeping her hand on my cock until the last second. I held back a groan and grinned. This was exactly what I needed. I only hoped she was as fiery as Erica had been in bed. So far, no one else had even compared.

I stood and pulled Natalie against my front as she said goodbye to her friends. Her ass pushed against me without hesitation. It was going to be a challenge to make it back to my apartment.

And yes, they are about to do the deed & get in the car and go to his place when zeroine suddenly decides to call and give him the news that he is a "daddy".

I don't know about anyone else, but yeah, this is the kinda guy that I would love to end up with - 'cause you know, he is so studly and all and has no moral compass (which he himself agrees btw...!)

I get everyone has their likes & whatnot's but seriously? What exactly was so attractive about this character(s) and this so-called "romance"?!

SHEESH!

2 Rhett and Erica Stars

This is a one night stand leading to an unexpected pregnancy story. Rhett meets Erica at his brother's wedding and she is the bride's best friend.

I really struggled to connect with either main character , especially Erica. She came across as quite aloof and cold and I felt like she really didn't actually like Rhett at all. There was clearly a very strong physical attraction...hello surprise baby...but she seemed annoyed most of the time.

Rhett is a full on promiscuous, panty pilferer.

Seriously , the guy sleeps with pretty much any willing female. That didn't bother me but I wasn't keen on seeing him start to get it on with some woman called Natalie at the bar , a few weeks after sleeping with Erica. They don't get far physically because he gets a call from Erica about the pregnancy...a passion killer for sure when you're about to get it on with another woman.

I liked that Rhett stepped up and wanted to be involved with the baby but Erica was so frosty and kept expecting him to fail at every turn.

I listened to this and the narration was by Jeremy York and Veronica Landon and was 6hr 21 mins long. Narration was ok - 3 stars.

The writing style was good but this book just wasn't for me. I would consider trying another book by these authors though.

Cheating? No

3 1/2 Stars!!

Rhett was a major player and had indiscriminate sex all the time. Even though he was warned to stay away from his sister in law's best friend, he was such a hound dog that he did what he usually did. A one night stand that was memorable turned into a surprise pregnancy that Erika was willing to handle solo. That might have been the catalyst to Rhett's intense focus to convince Erika that he was reliable daddy material.
I did not like the way he almost hooked up twice with two other women during his separation with Erika.
This storyline focused on the backwards relationship that grew slowly between this couple. It kind of showed how they probably would not have ended up together if not for the pregnancy. Rhett hadn't called or checked up on Erika after their hookup even though he had the connections to find out her number.
A slow burn, slow build relationship that was well written and developed although it lacked the urgent intensity that I look for in a romance.

Note: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This would be my second unexpected pregnancy romance to date.

But I did enjoy myself.

Even though everything was so up in the air.

For example questionable decisions made for one night by said MCs. (Also the questionable editing in some parts.)

Then the hostility and indecision and confusion and nervous breakdowns and distractions they faced to raise a child.

And their pasts/demons coming to tear them open inside out. I mean he’s a ladies man and she’s a teachers aide who’s curious but not like him. Opposites attract no? So they did as fate liked.

And through the help of the familia and friends, they were able to sort it and love it all up.

And I was so here for it. I definitely enjoyed the last chapters more for this reason.

Definitely a hit for me this time with the authors’ book this time. And I’m very sure that I’ll enjoy the next book in the series too.

Babies & Promises by Jenna Reed (Cassandra Hallman and J.L. Beck)

4 STARS

Babies & Promises is a full-length standalone novel by author Jenna Reed a.k.a Cassandra Hallman and J.L. Beck.

The novel tells the story of Erica and Rhett.

Erica's best friend, Sofia is getting married, so obviously, Erica being her best friend gets to be her maid of honor. Cody's brother's first man is none other than his brother, Rhett the manwhore.

Erica is a good girl. She is a teacher, she doesn't have a social life and many friends. She is an independent woman. She likes her life the way it is. The exact opposite of Rhett.

But the attraction between them is too powerful.

Although Erica was warned about Rhett and his behavior, she can't stay away from him and she wants to see if everything she heard about Rhett is true.

He is gorgeous, he is a player and he has a reputation to satisfy the woman he is with. He also has a ''special'' view about marriage. He loves his bachelor's life way too much.

They run away from the wedding and they spent a ''one nightstand''.   The next day everyone should be happy. But only then, they realize that they didn't use a condom.

What can really happen if you don't use a condom?!

If the girl is on the pill and you trust her to be clean?

It's been two months since the incredible one nightstand. Erica still thinks of Rhett, and Rhett still thinks of Erica. None of them thought that they will have to meet again and in this circumstance.

Rhett is a man, and he lives after three rules, the third being '' Always man up '' and so he does exactly that. Only he didn't expect to be so difficult. That it would be so hard to convince Erica.

Being a parent, neither Erica nor Rhett expected, but they have to make things work.

Babies & Promises is a little different than I was used to from these two amazing authors. It was good, sweet, emotional and very easy to read.

Rhett was amazing. He was a great man, a man every girl/woman would want. Immediately he wanted to take responsibility for his mistake.

Erica , in my opinion, was very stubborn, but being pregnant and seeing how her life was messed up in just one night, a night of pleasure and passion, the greatest night of her life, I understand her.

So.....if you are looking for something easy, sweet and emotional to read, this book is the one for you

This book was a step out of my comfort zone. I usually don't want to read anything baby-related, yet I signed up for it because I like the Beck & Hallman duo a lot! I knew that this was unlike anything I've read by them and I wanted to see how they managed. I wasn't disappointed! It was a lovely read with all the feels. Rhett was cute as hell while he tried to navigate his way into parenthood! I love how the authors made Erica a teacher and how they presented the teacher struggle in the US. Of course, the steamy scenes were top notch. I read this book in one go and it gave me all the happy butterfly flutter feels! If you're looking for something light, cute & entertaining, this is for you.

Babies and Promises is a sweet, feel good read.

After having a hot and pleasurable one night stand, Erica finds herself pregnant. Not only is she NOT ready to have children, but the father of her child is none other than Rhett, the glorious playboy.

I really enjoyed reading Rhett and Erica’s story. The characters growth throughout the story really made me happy and excited for them.

I can’t wait to read what’s next in this series.

Loved this story. Rhett and Erica met at her brother’s wedding and they had a one-night stand. When he woke up, she was gone and he thought that was it. Little did he know, that wasn’t the case. Loved their chemistry between them. This was a really good story and I can’t wait to read from this duo.

* KU Read

I enjoyed this shorter story about an oopsie baby between two people that have a wedding one nightstand. Now they both have to decide if they are going to raise the child together or co-parent. Babies & Promises is an almost real-life story of what happens in the world everyday.

I am excited to see what the next story brings us.

Great love story!

I liked everything about their non relationship, but could have done without the sex scenes. Great story, great to see how their relationship developed, to see how Rhett's character free and changed as he realized what he really wanted in life.

DNF 37%

I've never written a review on Goodreads before, but I just can't keep myself from writing one for this book. I’ve also never DNF:ed a book before because I have extreme book FOMO and want to find out what happens.

(some things below this might count as spoilers even though I've only read a bit of the book and much of it is implied by the title of the book and the blurb. Read at your own risk.)

First and foremost, I can't understand how so many writers who writes about pregnancies always acts like keeping the child is the only valid option but that's not how it works in the real world. When getting pregnant by a ONS after not using protection when you don’t want a child, why are you not getting a plan B pill? Or even CONSIDER getting an abortion? It is not that terrible and your right as a woman. You are not a baby making machine whose only purpose in the world is to produce babies to please others when you’re not ready. Many women don’t even want children and it is not unreasonable to consider an abortion.

That whole premise in this book bothers me, and the way the doctor in the book assumes that the reason for freaking out about her pregnancy when finding out is that she’s not “ready”. Maybe she doesn’t WANT a child at that moment and that’s MORE important than being “ready”. It is such a pro-life/pro-birth and conservative thing to write in and I can’t wrap my head around it.

The worst thing is how the 'hero' is behaving as a petulant child and like god’s gift to women for the majority of the book and when he finds out about the pregnancy, he can’t even begin to fathom a POSSIBILITY where the MC doesn’t want to keep the baby. He behaves like he has as much (or even more) right to make the choices because he’s the father. HE HAS NO RIGHTS WHEN THE BABY IS IN HER BODY (and honestly, shouldn’t have that many rights after birth either because the baby should always be more the womans). I will fight to the end of the world for this sentence. He can NEVER make choices or force her to birth a child that will put her life, career and entire world in jeopardy because he put his sperm in her body. And his way to approach this with her and prove himself trustworthy and want to be involved in the baby’s life is by sending recommendations and reviews on baby products like he’s implying that she’s unable to make those decisions by herself. And please don’t mistake this paragraph as me thinking that men can’t or shouldn’t take responsibility and help out with the baby as much as women when it’s born, they just have no right to assume or force a woman to keep a baby. Men should most certainly take out as much paternity leave as women take out maternity and take responsibility for everything else as feeding and changing diapers etc.

I apologize to all my friends who has taken the brunt of my frustration by listening to me SCREAMING in voice messages because I can’t take this book any longer.

Method: audiobook

Rating: 2/5 stars

H rating: 3/5 - Rhett

h rating: 0.5/5 - Erica

Drama: 3/5

Thoughts: If I am being honest, I saw a lot of reviews for this one and many were hating on the H. I actually felt the opposite. I did NOT like Erica, she was so defensive and mean to him, when yes, he did mess up but come on, she NEVER gave him a chance and she attacked him and his past all the time. She made assumptions and never really was apologetic. I did not like her.

I could not stand the heroine Erica. The constant on the defense got freaking tiring especially when the guy was trying. She never gave anything a chance just always in the negative. The hero while he is manwhore ( as usual) he did try to step up to the plate. Overall this book is annoying

Babies & Promises is a fabulous home run that is sure to delight the senses and leave you emotionally satisfied. It will slyly rip your heart into shreds and gently and methodically mend it at the same time. There is nothing as brilliant as a story that makes me walk through the gamet of emotions knowing that something precious and valuable is on the line, and this one met every one of my high standards. I never wanted to see this wonderful journey come to an end. What made me love it so much was that it was messy, emotional, and yet filled with warmth and love and hope that refused to walk away.

Erica found herself looking into the eyes of delicious temptation, and like any hot blooded woman, she dared to go after what she wanted. She tempted fate so exquisitely, and as a result she found herself at risk of losing her heart. Rhett saw Erica as another challenge, and yet deep down he knew there was something very different about her. As their worlds began colliding and inter mixing, they are faced with something utterly breathtaking and decidedly frightening. Their fierce independence is only tempered by the inexplicably immense pull of their hearts. Can they walk away before things get too out of hand, or will they instead find themselves unable to look away from the stunning beauty and indescribable awe of the other half of their soul?

I think more often then we realize that relationships start backwards and upside down like this one. In a society where people get so frustrated at finding all the wrong people, they resign themselves to be satisfied with one night stands for short term satisfaction and emotional fulfillment. They don't realize just how miserable that cycle really is, and in the end it leaves them feeling even emptier then before they started. I loved how Rhett realized just how amazing Erica was and decided that he would stand up and take responsibility for his actions. That alone made me fall harder for this wonderful man. Unfortunately, we don't see that happen as often as it should. His huge heart wouldn't let him walk away because he couldn't put that fascinating woman out of his mind. What a stunning couple these two make!

Jenna Reed is a wonderfully entertaining writer, and I can't wait to see what she creates next! Her stories claw at your heart and force you to feel what you don't want to in order to show you that there are good things in life if we will only fight for them. Any romance fan would quickly fall in love with her books, and I challenge any of you to give her a try.

I ended up loving this story. There are lots of feels in this story. The characters were well developed and easy to relate to. Everyone has fears and worries and sometimes you have to lean on those around you to get through them.

Erica is a teacher and the maid of honor in her best friend's wedding. Erica is also looking to have some fun and felt like she didn't have time for anything real, so she decided to flirt with Rhett. She knows that Rhett was the typical good looking, single guy playboy that was just out for a good time and she decided that was ok with her. Until the next morning...

Rhett had met Erica a few times, but seeing her at his brother's wedding to Erica's best friend had him deciding that she was his next conquest. Despite his brother's warning, they slipped away and ended up having the best night of their lives. The next morning Erika has gone and Rhett realized that they hadn't used any condoms. Two months later he gets a call from Erika telling him that she is pregnant. Rhett is shocked and all kinds of emotions run through him but before he can process them, she tells him she doesn’t need him or want him. Now he's got to do whatever he can to prove to Erika that he can be a good father and that he wants the baby.

They did everything out of order for a "normal" relationship, but somehow it worked for them. I loved how they worked together to get where they needed to be. Their happy ever after made me happy. I definitely recommend reading this book.

Babies & Promises is book of three in Breaking The Novel. This is Erica and Rhett story. It was brilliantly written with world building characters. An intriguing and tantalizing romance. Rhett is a gorgeous and brilliant manwhore who hop from women's bed to another. Rhett saw Erica as a challenge and another woman that he has conquer to put another notch on his bedpost. Erica is an intellectual, driven, school teacher. Rhett is bachelor and man who love playboy lifestyle. He alway pride himself on rules A. Always wear a condom, B. Always leave them wanting more, C. Always man up.
Erica was the maid of honor at his brother's wedding. But he knew he had to had have her. Erica is a sweetheart, tan, tone. Although he knew their tryst would leave to a broken heart and his brother warned him to stay always he wasn't going to let that get in his way. He did and they both had the best night of their lives. He was so caught up in the conquest that he broke his most cardinal rule and forgot always wear a condom. Fast forward two months later he received a phone call that he was going to be a dad. He experienced a mirage of emotion ranging from fear, anger, elation and excitement. But then she dropped the biggest bombshell on him. She informed him that his service is not needed and that she was going to raise the baby on her own. That doesn't sit well with Rhett, rule number three always step up. The story is filled with all all the highs and the lows.

The best man hooks up with the bridesmaid only with a bonus gift coming nine months later

*** 3 1/2 Stars ***

Babies & Promises is an interesting but difficult book for me to get into. It is the story Erica and Rhett. At his brothers wedding he is told to stay away from his new sister in laws best friend Erica. But it seems Rhett is a real loose cannon when it comes to woman and he pursues just about anything and everything with the mentality of have some fun and be done. So what does a man do when there is an off-limits sign put in his way.............ignore it all together. At the wedding Rhett and Erica flirt outrageously and end up leaving together. They have a one night stand but it seems he forgot to use some protection and now there is a little bonus gift from the wedding.
While Erica was more than able to go it alone she did let him know about the pregnancy. Now he is determined to be a good daddy and get Erica to fall for him. However, how can you trust a man that forgets you exist after one night together and has a reputation for being a bed hopping bad boy. Erica is going to have to decide if she can trust Rhett either to have him in her and/or the baby's life.
So I had a hard time with a couple of things in the story-line. But I am going to keep those to myself so everyone else can make up their own mind. Overall the story is well written and entertaining.

I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are all my own.

Rule #1: Always wear a condom. Rule #2: Always leave them wanting more. Rule #3: Always man up.

Erika and Rhett sleep together at Rhett’s brother wedding. And although the sex is amazing, it’s only a one night thing.
The weeks go by, each one goes on with their lives, until Erika finds out that she is pregnant. She panics and, although at first she does not want to say it to Rhett, in the end she tells him. He goes into shock, and he doesn’t know what to say, especially after Erika makes it clear that she doesn’t want anything from him and that she doesn’t want him to get involved in the baby’s life either.
Rhett will have to do everything to show Erika that he is going to be a part of the baby’s life whether she wants it or not.
Super sweet story.
🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼

Rhett and Erica do things in the wrong order. They have a baby first. No dates no relationship nothing. They met at Rhett's brothers wedding. As he was getting married to Erica's best friend she was the bridesmaid. One night thing. That's it. Or was supposed to be.

Erica is the epitome of independent woman. She likes her life and doing things in her terms. Rhett is a confirmed bachelor and lives for the book ups. His next conquest so to speak.

When time goes by and Erica finds out she's pregnant she freaks but handles it. Rhett's number three rule; Man up. Do what you're supposed to. When he finds out Erica is pregnant he mans up. He's there for her all the way. What neither counted on was their connection to the other not just the baby.

Emotions that neither are used to surface but when you're sure you don't want a relationship, you don't know what's next. As the baby gets closer to coming they get closer. Co-parent. That was the deal, but those pesky emotions. After a while they can't deny it even though they're trying to.

This book runs the gamut of emotions and angst. Rhett and Erica take you on a journey with them. You almost live the book you feel it so much. It's chock fill of feels. From start to finish you're invested. Another good book by this author.

Erica Roberts wanted a night of strings-free fun, a night to let go and just enjoy herself... and Rhett was the perfect man for the job. He doesn't do forever, he is gorgeous, and has a reputation to leave the ladies thoroughly satisfied.

Their night together couldn't have been more perfect... well except maybe the two pink lines that showed up two months after!

Babies and Promises is a wonderfully penned romance that will inspire swoons and leave the heart all warm and toasty. These two thought they had stumbled onto the perfect night of fun, but they got so wrapped up in things that they forgot one important detail. And fortunately for them that "little detail" is about to give them everything they never knew they needed or wanted. This one was a fun read to settle down with, it kept me enthralled from beginning to end. Nothing says entertaining quite like an unexpected baby, a man that is allergic to commitments, and the woman who manages to sneak past all his defenses! Their story was so good on the heart!! Highly recommend!

I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.

Don't Everything Backwards!

Babies & Promises: A Secret Baby Romance (Breaking The Rules Novel Book 2) is a contemporary romance. Rhett Banks is a typical playboy who only had one night stands and had the following rules:

Rule #1: Always wear a condom.
Rule #2: Always leave them wanting more.
Rule #3: Always man up.

Erica Roberts is a woman who never engaged in one night stands. Neither ever broke the rules until the night her best friend and his brother got married.
Not only did they both break the rules but also got everything backwards after the usual, unexpected pregnancy happened.

They both agonized over having unprotected sex. However, their love story began with her telling him that she was pregnant. He did man up, still she doubted his true intentions. They both accepted each other in the months leading up to the birth of their daughter. Rhett had the hardest job because Erica didn't believe him and kept pushing him away.

They both worked for bosses they hated while working on a relationship. In spite of the difficult times, he hung in and proved himself and their backwards romance led to their HEA!

Babies & Promises by Jenna Reed

I found Babies & Promises a beautiful captivating heart warming sweet romance. Rhett and Erica's one night of hot steamy sex was memorable in more ways than one when several months later a trip to her doctor reveals she's pregnant. She's knows he's a player likes his life and his views on marriage and children so at first wasn't even going to tell him until her bestfriend Sophia convinces her that wouldn't be fair to him. Rhett surprised, shocked at first steps up and accepts his responsibilities and demands to be apart of the baby's life. She's struggling to believe he will stick around in the long run. He is determined to prove he has changed. Their journey is full of ups, downs, emotional highs and lows as they discover what life will be like as they bring a new life into the world. It was truly an amazing book that had me laughing, crying, screaming and jumping for joy. I would love to see many more books with the other characters we met in this wonderful world.
